WIZS celebrated 60 years of broadcast service to the local community on May 1. The company hosted a Business Before Hours andRibbon Cutting on that day at the Vance County Regional Farmer’s Market to celebrate the milestone accomplishment.

“May the first, 1955 was a Sunday. And it was sixty years ago today, our community radio station signed on for the very first time as1450KHZ on the AM Band,” said John Charles Rose in his opening remarks of the celebration. Starting as WHVH on May 1, 1955, theoriginal 250-watt station was founded by Howard V. Harrell (thus theHVH in the call letters), an Oxford radio and television repair man.The first manager of the station was George Corkum and the firstannouncers were Tommy Moore, Jimmy Daniel (became manager inthe mid 1980s), Bob Johnson and Red Burton.

Harrell sold WHVH to Lawrence Brandon who sold the staion in1959 to Radio Corporation of Oxford which was owned by the Foxfamily. In 1960, the station increased to 1000 watts and changed to aTop 40 rock’n roll venue as WIZS. In 1969, the station became acountry music station.

Stan Fox sold WIZS to Rose Farm & Rentals, Inc. in 1989. Oneof the new owners at that time, John Rose III, brought more that 20years of newspaper and radio experience to the company. The groupadded new equipment and converted WIZS to an AM stereo station.Per an interview about the stations longevity in 1991 with the now lateJohn Rose III, Rose said, “Tommy Moore and Jimmy Daniel reallymade the station what it is under Stan Fox’s guidance”.

Now the station is owned and operated by John C. Rose.George Rush is the station’s General Manager and announces the local news and Towntalk. Rose said of Rush, “Had Mr. Rush not been therewhen my dad passed away, and had he not chosen to stay and do what he has done, I have my doubts if we’d be in this room today.” Rosealso said to the crowd, “Ten years ago when the station celebrated its 5oth anniversary, my father, John D. Rose III, centered the celebration onall the people who had worked at WIZS. It was a special time for my daddy. Not only did he get to honor his profession, Broadcasting whichhe dearly loved, he got to honor those who had gotten WIZS going, his co-workers past and present, those who had made WIZS ahousehold name. Fortunately, my dad was also able to document the station's history in writing. And, he honored his present staff too. That day and this day, we celebrate all those who got us here, and we applaud those now working at WIZS. We celebrate with you, our loyalclients, friends, neighbors and family. And I tell you this, were it not for you, we would not be here.”

There was a large crowd in attendance and they were treated to a buffet breakfast catered by Ted Wheeler of Ted’s Service Company. TheFarmer’s Market was chosen at the event’s location to allow attendees to see the facility, many for the first time. It is available for rent from theirwebsite at http://vance.ces.ncsu.edu/vance-county-regional-farmers-market.

In closing, Rose humbly addressed the crowd with, “We honor our past, we embrace the present and with loyal clients and employees, wesecure our future. Thanks be to God.”
