Message from the Principal

This school year has come and gone in the blink of an eye! We have once again had a wonderful year here at Terry Fox P.S. The time has passed so smoothly and quickly and that is a very good indication of how busy and productive we have been.

Throughout the year our staff has provided a wide variety of learning opportunities for students that have included academic support, clubs and teams. On the final page of this newsletter you will see a partial list of activities which have been offered by staff members. We thank them very much for their ongoing commitment.

With every new school year comes change… and 2015-2016 will be no exception. We will be saying goodbye to some of our staff and welcoming back others. We are sad to have to say goodbye to Ms. Corcoran, Ms. Tse, Ms. Mui, Ms. Chiu and Ms. Passingham. Ms. Corcoran has accepted a new position at Pauline Johnson P.S. and we wish her all the best. Ms. Mui, Ms. Tse, Ms. Chiu and Ms. Passingham will also be leaving as their Long Term Occasional positions have expired. We hope to see them return to our school in the near future. 5 Reasons Why Children Need to Play OUTDOORS

1. Physical Exercise Children must develop great motor and small motor skills and

cardiovascular endurance.

2. Appreciating the Outdoors Children need breaks to explore experiment, expand, influence, change,

discover, practice, push their limits, express their feelings and just be

themselves.

3. Outdoor play is imaginative

Because there are no pre-conceived ideas and no rules, children

must create the world around them. Children use their

imagination in ways they don’t when playing inside.

4. Outdoor play encourages cooperative play Children work together to meet a goal in a setting where winning does

not seem to matter. They compromise together and create obstacles that

they know can strengthen the activity or allow more children to

participate.

5. Outdoor play is fun Children are naturally happy when they are moving, playing and

creating outside. This joy opens them up for experimenting, learning

and growing.

Enjoy the outdoors

and remember to

be sun safe and

wear your

sunscreen!

Turn off the

technology

this summer

and enjoy the

great

outdoors!

Go for a bike ride, a

hike in Rouge Valley,

plan a picnic at the

park or venture to a

local beach to enjoy

the summer weather

and spend time as a

family.

Hair Donations The staff and students at Terry Fox have been donating hair and raising money for Wigs for Kids since

2009. Mrs. Mitra, Ms. Woo and Mrs. Tran have organized the events and so far they have donated 650

inches of hair and raised $15, 476.

On June 10, 2015, eleven students went to Salon Passion, owned by Paul and Elaine Lo, to donate even

more hair to Wigs for Kids. This year the Terry Fox community raised another $4639.15 to donate to

make more wigs for people suffering from hair loss. Thank you Terry Fox Community!

There were also several staff members and other students who donated their hair throughout the school

year.

Panam Beats! Heroic Feats!

On Tuesday May 12th, over 200 students went to see "Panam Beats! Heroic Feats! " - a celebration of

music from the Americas at the TSO.

Many students made and wore Carnival inspired masks during the performance. The program was

interactive so the students were encouraged to shout out "Mambo", clap or beat rhythms and also dance

on their feet. A great time was had by all. A big thank you to the Junior and Intermediate teachers for

helping out with the trip. We are all looking forward to next year.

Spring Concert

On Thursday May 21st, Terry Fox held its annual Spring Concert. The vocal performances

featured the amazing Junior Choir telling the story of "The Three Little Pigs,” and the grade

⅞ vocal class singing hits from the 60's, 70's and 80's. The grade 5 band played for the first

time and the Senior Band played a crowd favorite - "Let it Go"! The Junior Band played 3

contrasting pieces and, as always, our wonderful Band Itinerant, Mr. Bryan Huntley, Mrs.

Mitra and Mrs. Thomas took turns conducting all bands with expert hands.

The decorations in the gym were supplied by Ms. Ahn, Mrs. Van Der Toorn and Mrs.

Ziogou. Thanks to all who attended and support the Arts at Terry Fox.

We were happy to see so many parents attend the Spring Concert this year. The students work very

hard throughout the year to practice in preparation for their performance on Concert Night. The

students enjoy having their parents see that all their hard work and dedication was worth it. Thank

you for taking the time to attend our Spring Concert. We hope you were able to snap a few photos to

add to your memories.

A huge thank you goes out to Mrs. Thomas for her

dedication to Terry Fox’s music program. Mrs.

Thomas spends her lunches and time after school to

meet with her choirs, bands and special music groups.

For many students at Terry Fox, music is a way for

them to express themselves and learn to love music

from many cultures and countries. Music helps

energize, relax and inspire you! Listen to some music

today.

Somewhere over the Rainbow

Recently, the Intermediate Badminton Team made it to the semi-finals at

Pleasantview P.S and played against Bedford and lost a close game. Before the tragic loss,

the team was undefeated. The Badminton team practiced on Tuesdays and Thursdays after

school. Sometimes, they even practice until 6 pm. At training, the coaches teach the team

skills, strategy, and played games. The team consists of Nicholas Lee, Larry Fang, Grace

Liang, Michael Chu, Rachel Chu, Frankie Ma, Belle Ouyang, Leslie Huang, Alice Jiang,

and Victoria Young. And the very important, supportive Coaches; Ms. Woo, Mr. Liang,

and Ms. Chu. Everyone worked very hard, stayed strong, and always kept fighting. At

tournaments we fought hard and the coaches told us how to play better. We had a series of

wins before the loss in the semi’s. Although the team lost, they tried their best and kept

doing what they were supposed to do. The team went to McDonalds to get ice cream after

the loss and were also rewarded with a whole box of sour keys! The team will work hard

again next year to get good results next year.

Dear Graduates,

“We hope your dreams take you… to the corner of your smiles, to the highest of your hopes,

to the windows of your opportunities, and to the most special places your heart has ever known.”

A New Beginning

As you make a new beginning in your life, graduate,

be aware of important things you didn’t learn in school:

As you pursue your dreams,

remember to take time to help and serve others

even if doing so slows you down a little.

As you explore and develop your unique talents,

remain humble, realizing that your special abilities

are gifts.

As life hands you challenges, welcome them

as ways to become smarter and stronger.

As you acquire material things, know that your most

important possessions are honesty, integrity, and the

desire to make a difference.

Congratulations, graduate.

May your new path take you where you want to go and

also bring you pleasant surprises!
