“Naku, naman, Manang, bakit siya na naman ang ibinuto mo.?” sabi ng kanyang bayaw na si Ruben pagkatapos ng eleksiyon. Mangungurakot na naman iyan? Tignan mo, dati giba-giba ang bahay niya at ngayon, palasyo na! Hindi ka na kayo nadala!”

“Eh, sino pa ang iboboto ko, eh, siya lang naman ang humahalik at kumakamay sa akin, at siya din ng nagbibigay ng mantika sa aking labi,” paingos na sagot ni Dalisay.

“Iyang mga hinayupak na ‘yan, niyayakap at kinakamayan ka kapag eleksiyon...at saka, sana akita mo ang ginawa ni Mrs. Pulgeras, kinuha agad ang bote ng alkohol matapas kang kamayan! Isa ito sa mga usap-usapan ng ating mga kababayan pagkatapos ng butohan nitong nakaraang Mayo 13, 2013. At kahit may kaunting angkat ang administrasiyon ni Noynoy Aquino, hindi pa rin nagbabago ang takbo ng politika: nandiyan ang kontrol ng mga pamilyang nanunungkulan, kulang na lang ang kanilang mga alagang aso at pusa ang kumandidato. Nandiyan pa rin ang bilihan ng boto, ang patayan, Ang nababago lang, pangalan ng pangulo!

Ang komedya ng mga family dynasty ay lumang tugtugin sa larangan ng politika. Kung uungkatin mo ang mga panahon ng mga Roxas, Osmena, Marcos, at ang mga bagong sibol ng political dynasies na kinabibilangan ng mga Binays, Revillas, Estrada at Ejercitos, Pacquiaos, at iba pang mga pamilya sa mga lalawigan at bayan, masasabi mo na talamak na ang ganitong problema. Nagkaroon ng balak na itigil ang mga political dynasty, at ito ay hindi nakalusot sa kamara..Eh, sino ba namang ang nandoon sa Kamara, mga miembro ng political dynasty? Tanga ba sila? Ano, sila ang gigilit ng leeg ng kanilang kapangyarihan sa bansa, sa pagkamkam ng pera ng bayan? No way, Josey!

Pero my punto si Bise-

Presidente Jejomar Binay nang batikusin ang kanyang pamilya tungkol sa isyung ito. Sabi niya, may positive ang political dynasty, katulad nga nila, ang anak niya, mayor ng makati, ang isang anak, kandidato sa pagka-senador, at siya naman, bise-presidente at tiyak na magiging presidente sa 2016.

Totoo, may konting kabutihan pero mas marami ang kasamaan. Ang kabutihan, ang buong pamilya ay nagsisilbi sa bayan. Ano ang masasabi mo sa Makati? Malinis,moderno, progresibo at ang mga taong nasasakop ng mga Binay ay maligaya. May mga libreng gamot,

Kaya kung may ambisyon ang isang tao sa kanilang lugar, wala kang karapatan, kabayan! Kalansay ka na, iyong pamilya pa rin iyon ang namumuno sa iyong bayan o lalawigan o sa bansa.

Ito ang isang uri ng kanser na tila ay walang lunas. Ito na yata ang mga nagisnan ng ating mga kababayan,

at habang ganito pa rin ang takbo ng politika sa atin, ang yaman ay hindi kabahagi ng mga milyon-milyong kababayan. Sa mga darating ng panahon, ganito pa rin ang takbo ng politika sa ating bayan.

"Ang masasabi ko lamang sa iyo, Dalisay, isa ka sa mga milyon-milyong kababayan natin na mahirap pa rin, Kasalanan mo ang masamang nangyayari sa ating bayan" pasaring ni Ruben, "Kawawa naman ang Inang Bayan", pahimakas na dalit ni Ruben at sumakay na siya sa kanyang pampaseherong tricyle upang maka-boundary para sa pagkain ng kanyang pamilya.




Redford government clarifies law to help bare land condo owners Redford and Bhullar announce new schools for Calgary

Changes to legislation governing condominiums will help protect bare land condo owners from large assessments to repair and maintain managed property.

“Bare land condominium owners and corporations deserve to have clarity and certainty in dealing with maintenance and repair issues and we are providing it,” said Service Alberta Minister Manmeet S. Bhullar. “We promised that we would implement this amendment as quickly as possible and we are delivering on that commitment.”

Bare land condominiums are typically stand-alone structures such as detached homes and duplexes. Many corporations that manage bare land properties are responsible for maintaining “managed property,” such as roofs, windows and lawns, in addition to common property, including roads and sidewalks within the complex.

A recent Court of Queen’s Bench decision determined that the

current Condominium Property Act does not give bare land condominium corporations the authority to collect fees or use reserve funds for expenses related to repairing and maintaining managed property. As a result, corporations may have to finance expenses for managed property, potentially exposing unit owners to large special assessments to cover the costs.

Bill 24, the Statutes Amendment Act, proposes amendments to the Condominium Property Act that will let all condominium corporations collect fees and use their reserve funds to maintain, repair and replace managed property if their bylaws allow it. The change impacts approximately 1,300 corporations with 40,000 owners.

Consultation with Albertans indicate overwhelming support for immediate changes to the Condominium Property Act to help prevent sudden and unaffordable special assessments being levied against residents of bare land condominium developments.

Service Alberta is currently compiling and analyzing the input of over 5,000 Albertans’ who participated in the broader review of the Condominium Property Act. More information and updates on that process will be posted on Service Alberta’s website.

Families in Calgary will benefit from nine new and replacement schools that will ensure their sons and daughters can continue to receive a world-class education in modern, student-friendly facilities.

The projects are part of Premier Alison Redford's promised investment in education infrastructure and the third major capital announcement this week.

"We made a commitment to build new schools and we're doing just that," said Premier Redford. "This is about more than bricks and mortar - it's about building strong communities so all our kids get the best possible start in life. By investing in schools today, we are investing in ourselves, and our province."

These new schools will provide as many as 7,550 student spaces across all grades in Calgary.

"Calgary is a growing city and we need to ensure we build the schools today that Calgary will need for in the future," said Manmeet S. Bhullar, MLA for Calgary-Greenway. "These projects will support the need for more student spaces and bring Inspiring Education to life through enhanced programming and student engagement."

The new schools will feature advanced systems and features such as large windows that provide natural lighting and

ventilation systems that improve air quality and circulation, creating a healthy learning and working environment for students and teachers and the people who use them.

Government is investing $503 million over three years to support the delivery of new school projects within Alberta's high-growth communities. Meetings between government and local boards to discuss planning and design will soon be underway.

Schools will be built through a combination of public-private partnerships and traditional methods. New school projects in this first bundle are expected to be completed in 2016.

DFA commends Irregular OFWs in Saudi to correct statusThe Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) commends overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) with status problems in Saudi Arabia to correct their residency and labor status.

According to the Department of Foreign affairs (DFA), the new guidelines were announced by the Saudi Ministries of Interior and Labor last May 10 allowing irregular workers to correct their status or leave the country without obtaining “No Objection Certificates.”

Based on the newly issued guidelines,irregular OFWs can now leave the country without the need to obtain No Objection Certificates from their current employers, provided that they do not have criminal charges or records against them.

The OFWs will also be allowed to return to the country in the future if they are able to obtain valid working visas.

Other options for irregular OFWs stated in the guidelines include returning to their original employer or transfer to a new employer even without permission or consent of the original employer, and transfer of household workers to a private sector company through the Saudi Labor Offices.

As part of the implementation of the

guidelines, the Saudi government will waive all penalties and fines accruing to an illegal worker before April 06, 2013.

Also, private rights claims between a Filipino worker and his/her current employer will be settled through the court, and will not prevent the Filipino worker from transferring to a new employer.

More significantly, employers are now clearly obligated to hand over to the worker all his personal documents such as passports and residency permit upon request.

Employers are also obligated to make sure that the residency permit of workers is valid. Failure to do so is sufficient grounds for a worker to end their contractual relationship.

The deadline to avail of these concessions is July 03, 2013.

Subsequently, the Saudi government will resume its inspections and arrest and / or apply fines against violators – both employers and employees.

Election 2013: PNoy team wins but political dynasty becomes an ugly head; rampant vote buying and violence mark the supposedly peaceful electionGrace Poe, the adopted daughter of the mega-star of 60's, Susan Roces and the late "da king" Fernando Poe Jr., a neophyte in politics, and who dropped the last name, Lamanzares for political reason, is the number in the senatorial line-up dominated by the PNoy candidates, according the unofficial result from the Commission of Election.

But the 2013 election has become the major stage for the continuous surge of political dynasties who rule the country and which has been criticized by local critics and international observers.

reign inspite of the past records in governannce: the former 1st Lady Imelda Romualdez Marcos, running for Congressman in the Marcos bastion, together with her daughter, Imee Marcos Manotoc, as a governor; and the current Bongbong Marcos who has an ambition to run for president in 2016; and the Binays: Jojo Binay, the current vice president of the Philippines has his daughter, Nancy, as one of the candidate of his own party UNA; and in the bag, the re-election of his son as mayor of Makati; and his wife who had become the Mayor of Makati once;and in the Las Pinas City, a suburbs of Manila, the Aquilars and the Villars are heading to be establishing a strong foothold on political dynasty: Manny Villar, the current senator; and his wife Cynthia Aquilar Villar, formerly a representative, now is running for senator under Pnoy Team; the Aquilars have governed Las Pinas for many decades; in Cavite, the Revillas are becoming an institution among voters: Ramon Revilla, the 50's movie hearthrob

and his son, Bong Revilla, and his wife Lani Mercado; and down south of the Philippines,the current Filipino boxer, Pacquiao and his wife, Jinky, the former, re-electionist and the latter, is the current candidate for a provincial position.

These are only some of the families whose political prominence have become the common candidates in the national, congressional and local elections.

The Supreme Court stopped the proposal by the Comelec to limit the withdrawal of money from the bank to stop vote buying. Every election is the best time for moneyed politicians to win the election.

Peace and order problems have become one of the political ingredients in any election. Warring politicians resort to violence just for the sake of being elected.

In this latest election, there were 52 million who cast their ballots to define the country's political future.

Remember to compost your yard waste for free at City landfillsFiled by Jose “Pepito” Magpayo

Calgary – Now that nice weather is finally here, remember that you can drop-off your yard waste for composting at all three City landfills.

The landfills will waive fees for residential loads of leaves, branches, plants and other yard and garden material until June 2. The material will be composted at the sites, turning it back into a useful resource.

Please leave your material loose or put

it in paper yard waste bags, which can be composted along with the yard waste. If loads are loose, make sure they are secure before transporting them. The service is intended for residents only. Charges may apply if the load contains other items.

Before leaving for the landfill, visit Calgary.ca/waste or contact 311 to confirm landfill hours, locations and other details.

First ever Filipino Canadian Superior Court Judge Appointed

On April 26, 2013, the Honourable Rob Nicholson, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada announced new judicial appointments in Ontario. Justice Steve Coroza became the first ever Filipino Canadian Judge appointed to the Ontario Superior Court.

The Honourable Steve A. Coroza, a judge of the Ontario Court of Justice in St. Catharines, is appointed a judge of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice (Brampton) to replace Madam Justice N.M. Mossip, who elected to become a supernumerary judge as of July 8, 2013. This appointment is effective July 8, 2013.

Mr. Justice Coroza was appointed to the Ontario Court of Justice in 2009. He received a bachelor of laws from University of Windsor Law School in 1995 and was admitted to the Bar of Ontario in 1997. He also completed a master of laws degree at Osgoode Hall Law School in 2003.

Prior to his appointment, Justice Coroza was a senior counsel with the Public Prosecution Service of Canada from 1998 to 2009, and prior to that was staff duty counsel for Ontario Legal Aid in Toronto, where his main area of practice was criminal law.

Mr. Justice Coroza was a member of the Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers. He was an instructor for the Bar Admission Course (2001-2009), a part-time instructor at Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology (2004-2007), and an instructor of the Trial Practice Course and Trial Advocacy Workshop at Osgoode Hall Law School where he is currently an adjunct professor. He is also the co-author of a publication entitled Sentencing Drug Offenders.

Isang lalake ang humingi sa kanya ng pahintulog na makapagsalita at sinambit na: “Sister, tunay nga po, nakikita ko ang nagniningning na Mukha ng Panginoon sa iyong mukha. Binabasa rin naman ng ibang tao ang ugali ng kapwa ayon sa mga kagananapan sa lipunan at kalagayan nito. Ating tunghayan ang mga haka-hakang ito:

Maganda naman sana ang may nakikita kang ipinapatayong bagong proyekto, basta’t huwag lamang kakalimutang panatilihin kung anong dati ng meron tayo. Ang pagpapalawig o pagtataguyod ng luma at kapaki-pakinabang ang siyang tunay na magiging hagdan upang maabot ang tagumpay na inaasam.

Kung ang mukha ang siyang representasyon ng buong pagkatao at ang mga inprastuktura naman ang imahen ng lipunan, baka naman maaaring pag-aralan munang mabuti kung ano ang magiging epekto sa buong katawan ng gagawing operasyon. Dahil kung hindi, masasayang lang ang pera, oras, at pinagpaguran.

Calgary Fire Department Asks Parents To Warn Kids About Dangers of Venturing Out On IceFiled by Jose “Pepito” Magpayo

There have been several recent reports regarding kids on or near ice at the Glenmore Reservoir. The Calgary Fire Department would like to emphasize to citizens the dangers of venturing out on or near ice. Calgarians are asked to stay off of all ice. Sen. Enverga, Jr. urges theFil-Can business community for increased trade with RP

Sen. Tobias Enverga, Jr. (C, Ontario) has issued a call on the Filipino Canadian business community to work in furtherance of an increased trade between the Philippines and Canada.

Speaking at the Philippine Chamber of Commerce-Toronto (PCCT) Induction Ball and Dinner Gala in Toronto on Saturday, May 4, 2013, Sen. Enverga, Jr. recalled the initial steps taken by PCCT when its representative traveled to the Philippines as part of the official delegation of Prime Minister Stephen Harper. He said that PCCT President Oswald Tugadi initiated in principle the signing of MoU with the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) in the Philippines, as well as with several chapters of the PCCI.

The only Filipino Canadian in the Senate of Canada took note that the PCCT begun implementation of those initial steps when it formed a delegation and conducted a trade

mission to the Philippines in February this year. Among those which initially yielded positive results were those in the cosmetics and logistics, trade and cargo forwarding industries.

Sen. Enverga, Jr. told the Filipino Canadian business community not to hesitate to reach his office for assistance on matters in pursuance of the objectives of the PCCT.

The Conservative Senator for Ontario urged the newly-inducted officers and directors of the PCCT to explore working with other Chambers of Commerce elsewhere in the country to expand markets for two-way trade with the Philippines. In mid-April, Sen. Enverga, Jr. had a dialogue with the Manitoba Filipino Business Council which expressed interest in working with various business organizations across the country for economic prosperity of the Filipino Canadian community in Canada.

I was scared, but I knew I couldn't show that I was weak. So weak, that every single time I tried to speak, My body would start to shake. so hard, like it was having it's own little earthquake. No strength, Because how do feel strong if all you feel is hate?

It didn't help when would teachers asked me "Ruby, what does your father think about your grades?" Well I don't know sir; it’s been almost a year since I've last visited his grave.Childhood memories are supposed to make you happy. But when I reminisce, I try to remember my father's last kiss. I will NEVER see him again, all because some girl decided to drink and drive with her friends.

So how do take a girl whose so destroyed, so broken, so torn up, confused, so unspoken and it turn it into someone who can see, that there is truly a bright side to reality. How do you break down the wall that’s made of bricks and sticks glued together by the world’s most painful tricks?

Well. You take away the vibrations from her quivering shape, burn them in the fire once fuelled by hate,and teach that little girl that she is in control of her soul. Teach her that she is beautiful. Let her know that she can replace her tendencies of being self-conscious with something so much better; confidence. Because those tear filled eyes sparkle with dreams that want to scream, So loud!Cause those plans will one day, make her old and new parents proud.

Instead of her holding back, let that little girl SHOUT!That she will not be a useless product of her memories, but instead let her hearts injuries, sculpt and shape her into her own little masterpiece.

I was scared, but now I'm brave, because I refuse to be a slave, to my past. I have to make my short time on this earth last.

I know now that I must live this life to inspirebecause life is all about climbing higher. Each step on that ladder will get me closer to who I really want to be, and to me, that is happy.

She is passionate about the fine arts; art, poetry, and music and hopes to author a book some day. Heather also enjoys swimming and playing the piano and won the pageant’s Miss Best in Talent for her piano piece (along with Miss Best in Gown, Miss Best in Swimsuit and Miss Photogenic). She greatly values her relationship with family and friends.

Heather’s goal is to love Christ with her whole being while enjoying His creation. Already a traveler, she hopes to further experience other cultures and customs while simultaneously serving others in some capacity whenever possible.

Heather joined the Miss Philippines Canada Calgary 2013 beauty pageant because she believes that such events help build and boost the participants’ confidence, poise and other lady-like qualities. She agrees with the vision of the pageant organizers to give our young Filipinas abroad the opportunity to develop their characters while encouraging them to love their Filipino heritage. Advantages of the CEC Program vsother Immigration Programs

I have received requests to re-publish the news article with regards to the advantages of the CEC program as compared to the other immigration programs. Many TFWs are still not aware about the recent new changes in CEC program announced recently. For Temporary Foreign Workers (TFWs) already in Canada there are: four (4) main immigration programs available to become Permanent Residents (PRs). The four programs are: 1. the Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) program, 2. the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP), 3. the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) program and 4. the Spousal Sponsorship Program (SSP).

Summarized in this news article are some of the advantages of the CEC program as compared to the other immigration programs. Among the four (4) above listed programs, the updated CEC program – as of Jan. 2, 2013 is the simplest option and requires the least documentation. It is one of the best Christmas gifts that the Canadian government gave Temporary Foreign Workers in 2012.

Listed below are some of the advantages of the CEC program– as compared to the other immigration programs:1. The FSW program requires the applicant to score 67 points out of 100 in the six selection factors (ie. education, language skills, work experience, age, arranged employment, and adaptability) to be eligible to apply. In the CEC program, there are no selection factors requirement points to meet.2. The FSW program requires the applicant to provide Certificate of Employments for the last ten (10) years. In the CEC program, the applicant has to provide Certificate of Employments only for the last three (3) years.3. The FSW program requires the applicant and the spouse to provide copies of their college or university diplomas and transcript of records. In the CEC program, these documents are not required.4. In the FSW program, if the applicant does not have a written Arranged

Employment Offer from an employer in Canada, he/she is required to provide proof of settlement funds. This could a big problem for applicants who do not have enough money or assets to meet the “show money” requirement. In the CEC program, settlement funds or “show money” is not required.5. In the AINP program, the applicant and the employer are required to fill-out provincial and federal government forms respectively. The AINP application involves a two (2) step process. First, the provincial government has to approve the AINP application and then after the application is approved by the province, the applicant has to forward the application to the federal government. The total AINP processing and approval time could take 18 to 24 months or more. In the CEC program, the applicant only has to fill-out federal government forms and the approval process generally takes 10 to 12 months.6. In the AINP program, both the applicant and the employer have to meet eligibility criteria. If applicant is eligible but the employer is not eligible... the AINP application is refused. So make sure that your employer meets all the AINP eligibility criteria before you apply under the program. In the CEC program, as long as the applicant meets all eligibility requirements ... the employer eligibility is not a factor.7. In the AINP program, the employer has to nominate or sponsor the applicant. If the applicant changes employer before the AINP application is approved... the employer nomination is lost and the AINP application will be refused. The applicant has to stay with the same employer until the AINP and PR application is approved. In the CEC program, as long as the TFW applicant meets the CEC requirements, the applicant does not have to keep working with the same employer until the CEC application is approved. In fact, as long as the applicant meets the CEC criteria, he can be un-employed when he applies under CEC program. 8. In the Spousal Sponsorship program, the applicant is dependent on the spouse or common-law partner to sponsor him/her. Two (2) applications have to be submitted simultaneously: Spousal Sponsorship application and PR application. In the CEC program, the applicant is not dependent on a spouse or a common-law partner to have his/her PR application to be approved. Only one application is required instead of two sets of applications.

On December 11, 2012 Jason Kenney – Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism – announced two significant changes to the CEC program. First significant change: effective January 2, 2013 skilled TFW workers ( NOC: O, A and B) may apply for Permanent Residency (PR) under the Canadian Experience Class program with twelve (12) months, full-time, skilled, Canadian work experience – within the last 3 years. This is one year sooner than the previously required 24 months to qualify under the CEC.

The 2nd significant change is that: full-time work is now defined as, at least 30 hrs/week of paid skilled work. Full time work used to be defined as at 37.5 hrs/week of work. The reduction of hours of work per week will help many skilled Temporary Foreign Workers qualify under this program. To qualify under the CEC program you need proof that you worked at least 30hrs x 52 weeks = 1,560 hrs. of skilled work within the past 3 years. You need copies of your payslips to prove your hours of work.

TFWs applying under the CEC program must meet minimum language thresholds to be eligible to apply for PR based on their job category under the National Occupation Classification (NOC) code. For NOC work categories A and 0 (ie. managers, professionals) the language requirement is a score of CLB 7 or higher for each language abilities (ie. read, write, listen, speak). For NOC work category B (ie. supervisors, skilled workers), the language requirement is CLB 5 or higher for each of the language abilities.

The Canadian Experience Class program is targeted to foreign nationals in Canada who:1. Are either a temporary foreign worker with at least one (1) year of full-time or equivalent skilled work experience in Canada or a foreign student graduate from a Canadian post-secondary institution with at least one (1) year of full-time or equivalent skilled work experience in Canada.2. Have gained skilled work experience in Canada with a valid work or study permit. 3. Apply while working in Canada or within one (1) year of leaving their job in Canada 4. Have taken and passed the language proficiency exams (IELTS for English or TEF for French) based on their job category ( ie. NOC: O, A or B).

a. CEC requirements for Temporary Foreign Workers For temporary foreign workers, the one year of full-time (or equivalent) work experience in Canada must be gained within three years from date of PR application. Full-time work experience means working at least 30 paid hours per week. Work experience in low or semi-skilled work (ie. NOC: C, D) does not qualify under the CEC program.

To confirm if the applicant’s job will qualify under the CEC program, check the 4-digit NOC code in the applicant’s LMO (Labour market Opinion) document and see where it is classified in the NOC matrix website listed below:http://www30.hrsdc.gc.ca/NOC/English/NOC/2006/Welcome.aspx Only jobs under NOC: O, A or B classifications are considered to be skilled work categories.

b. CEC requirements for Foreign Graduate Students For foreign student graduates (FSGs) of a Canadian post-secondary educational institution, the applicants must have at least one year of full-time (or equivalent) work experience in Canada after graduation. The person must have been physically present in Canada for at least two (2) academic years. Full-time work experience means working at least 30 paid hours per week. The work experience must be gained within two years from date of PR application.FSGs of a Canadian post-secondary educational institution must complete either:• a full-time Canadian post-secondary educational program of at least two years or• a one-year Master’s program (certificates and diplomas cannot be counted) and an additional year of education, obtained in Canada, before admission into the one-year program (for a total of two years).Definitions:• Full-time studies – to be eligible, applicant must be considered “full-time” at their school. • Two years of study – at least 16 months— or four (4) semesters—within the 24 months before completing a full-time post-secondary program of

study in Canada.Note: English or French as a second language courses do not count toward education requirements under the Canadian Experience Class.1. The programs must be delivered by a private or public post-secondary educational institution such as a college or a university that is provincially recognized, or2. Private CEGEPs.Work experience gained while the student is still studying does not count toward meeting the requirements for work experience in the CEC program. Only paid work experience gained after graduation is counted (unpaid volunteer work does not count). Foreign student graduates may get work experience by applying for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) after graduation. Work permits may be valid for up to three years with no restrictions on the type of work the graduate can do or where.

ConclusionThe updated CEC program is one of the best and simplest options. Temporary Foreign Workers (TFWs) should check, if they qualify under the CEC program - have skilled work experience in Canada (eg. Supervisors, Managers, Cooks, Chefs, Nurses, LPNs, Welders, Plumbers, Electricians, Crane Operators, Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanics, Engineers, Accountants, etc.) for at least one (1) year within the last 3 years. In 2013, Canada plans to accept only up to 10,000 applicants under the CEC program. So, if you are a TFW with at least 12 months of skilled work experience and meets the language requirements... you should apply to become a PR under the CEC program, before the 10,000 limit is reached.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs):Q1. I’m a skilled temporary foreign worker and want to apply to stay permanently. Is there an education requirement in the CEC program?ANS: No, there is no education requirement in the CEC program.Q2. I have different types of work experience in Canada, some skilled (NOC 0, A or B) and some low-skilled (NOC C or D). Does the low-skilled work experience count in any way toward the work experience required when the majority of my work experience is skilled?ANS: No, low skilled work experience does not count under the CEC program. Only skilled work experience is counted.Q3. I meet the requirements to apply under the CEC program but have since returned to my home country. Am I still eligible to apply under the Canadian Experience Class?ANS: Yes, but you must apply within one year of leaving your job in Canada. If you left your job more than one year ago, your work experience is not recent and does not meet the requirement.Q4. Can experience gained in Canada without proper work or study authorization be counted under the Canadian Experience Class?ANS: No, experience gained in Canada has to have a valid work or study permit.Q5. Can semi-skilled or low-skilled workers apply to stay permanently under the CEC program?ANS: No. semi-skilled or low skilled workers cannot apply under the CEC program. However, the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP) is available - for TFW workers in jobs classified at skill levels C and D under the National Occupational Classification (NOC) system.Applying for permanent residence

under the Canadian Experience Class is restricted to Skill Type 0 (managerial occupations) or Skill Level A (professional occupations) or B (technical occupations and skilled trades) in the NOC.Q6. I have already submitted an application for permanent residence as a skilled worker (under the FSW program or AINP program), can I still apply under the CEC category?ANS: Yes, but applicants are required to submit a new PR application with new fees.If CIC has not started processing the initial skilled worker application, the applicant could withdraw it and may be entitled to a refund of the fees paid. It is not forbidden for a TFW to apply simultaneously with two different streams of the Canadian immigration programs. However, the applicant will have to choose under which program the permanent resident status will be granted. Q7. I want to apply as a graduate student under the CEC program. Can part-time work experience during my full-time studies in Canada be counted toward the one-year requirement?ANS: No, your work experience must be gained after graduation.Q8. I want to apply as a graduate. Does work experience that was part of my educational program’s requirements (such as co-op terms and apprenticeships) count toward the one-year requirement?ANS: No, co-op terms and apprenticeships completed before graduating do not count as skilled work experience as they are considered part of an educational program. For this reason, co-op terms and apprenticeships are counted as part of the minimum two-year educational program requirement.Q9: How do I check, if the consultant whom I am dealing with and paying a fee is a licensed immigration consultant and authorized to provide immigration advice?A: Licensed immigration consultants in Canada are listed in the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council (ICCRC) website consultants’ directory:http://www.iccrc-crcic.ca/home.cfm

If the person is not listed in the ICCRC website “active members list” directory, then chances are the person is NOT a licensed immigration consultant. The person may be fake consultant operating illegally without proper license and training.

Under the new Canadian law known as Bill C-35, fake immigration consultants charging professional fees can receive stiff penalties of up to two (2) years imprisonment and/or up to $100,000 in fines when convicted.

Vivieka (Sabel) visited Edmonton through the collaboration of Palabok House and TFC NY Entourage Productions. A heart warming comedy, Doris and Sabel entertained the crowd with their singing and jokes while Aiza Seguerra (Kute) played guitar and sung her music composition. Jodi Sta. Maria belted songs “Torete” and “Kaba” with Aiza and of course Richard Yap (Ser Chief) appeared at the stage singing "Crazy Little Thing Called Love". Thunderous applause and delirious fans deafening noise ensued. A comedy with lots of audience participation and impromptu acts brought the audience to their feet.

Two thumbs up for the light heart warming comedy show and five thumbs up for the audience.

New strategy bolsters province's fight against cancer

Albertans will see improved cancer screening, diagnosis, treatment and support as the government moves forward with a bold new plan to fight cancer. The plan, Changing Our Future: Alberta’s Cancer Plan to 2030, maps out 10 strategies to transform coordination of care for patients, clinicians and researchers, with the goal of preventing most cancers, curing more cases of cancer, and reducing the suffering of those affected by cancer.

“Every day, 42 Albertans learn they have cancer. We expect that to grow to 73 new cancer cases a day by 2030. We aim to change that,” said Health Minister Fred Horne. “Even though we have exceptional cancer care, we need to do more starting today. To wait means losing the opportunity

to get ahead of the curve and that will end up costing much more - in lives and in dollars.”

The plan calls for a provincial approach to cancer management so all parts of the system - from prevention to screening, treatment and care - can work together for the best possible outcomes for patients and families. The plan aims to reduce wait times for treatment, generate more seamless quality care, and improve the use of leading-edge research and clinical trials to support patient care.

A key element of the plan creates CancerControl Alberta, a new operating division in Alberta Health Services, which will bring all of Alberta’s cancer facilities and programs under one umbrella. A cancer stewardship committee will be created to support implementation of the plan.

“CancerControl Alberta builds on the foundation of an already impressive provincial cancer program. Our program will be amongst the best in the world, increasingly based on evidence, much generated by research that will be carried out as an integral

part of CancerControl Alberta,” said Dr. Paul Grundy, Senior Vice President and Senior Medical Director of CancerControl Alberta.

“The new entity will provide far greater leadership and have responsibility for the full cancer control spectrum, providing expert care and support for patients from their first symptom to survivorship or palliation.”

The plan will make better use of existing facilities and staff, and build or expand cancer facilities in Edmonton, Calgary, Red Deer and Grande Prairie. A new billion-dollar cancer centre in Calgary will serve outpatients, inpatients, and cancer research, and the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton is making upgrades worth $67 million.

The plan will be integrated with other provincial strategies, such as the Tobacco Reduction Strategy, further development of Family Care Clinics and Primary Care Networks for enhanced primary health care, the ongoing Healthy U campaign, and development of health care infrastructure and palliative care capacity.

The Calgary Airport Authority Receives Award for Life Saving Equipment at YYC

Filed by Jose “Pepito” Magpayo, Calgary, AB. – The Calgary Airport Authority’s Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) Program, which was introduced in to the airport almost a decade ago, was recognized by Alberta Health Services, Emergency Medical Services, Calgary Metro with a Citizen Recognition Award in a ceremony at the site of a recent AED life-saving event at YYC.

On February 15, passenger David Dexter’s life was saved thanks to the quick action of emergency response personnel and the availability of an AED. In the case of Mr. Dexter, the EMS crew who attended the scene stated, “The fact that an AED was immediately available was definitely a key element in the positive outcome of the patient.”

YYC’s AED Program is extensive and continues to grow as the airport expands. There are currently 25 AEDs located throughout YYC, which can be accessed quickly and easily during a medical situation

by emergency responders, airport employees, and the public.

The AED program at YYC includes monthly inspections of all AEDs located throughout the terminal and an extensive training program. The program, hosted by The Calgary Airport Authority and a variety of airport partners, is available to all Team YYC members and ensures that employees throughout YYC have the equipment and training to save a life. It’s truly an airport community initiative.

EMS reminds the public that calling 9-1-1, starting CPR immediately, and getting an AED to the patient as quickly as possible increases a person’s chance of survival. In most cases, an airport AED can be applied to a patient prior to EMS arriving due to the quick response of airport staff.

The award from EMS was presented to YYC recognizing the Calgary Airport Authorities ongoing commitment to this life saving program.

ng sandatahang Kastila katulong ang mga katutubong sundalo sa pamumuno ni Gobernador Ramon Blanco , ng kanyang kahalili na si Camilo de Polavieja at ang humalili sa kanya,si Primo de Rivera ay nagbunsod kay Emilio Aguinaldo, Pangulo ng Gobyerno Rebolusyonario na likasin ang Cavite at kumanlong sa kabundukan ng Biak na Bato,sa lalawigan ng Bulacan . Nagtatag siya sa pamahalaan ng Republika ng Biak Na Bato. at bumuo ng isang Konstitusyon na kopya sa Saligang Batas ng Cuba. Mula roon ay nagpalabas siya ng manipesto na ipagpagpatuloy ang pakikipaglaban at naguutos ng paggamit ng taktikang gerilya laban sa mga Kastila at sa huling mga pangungusap nito ay sinabi ni Aguinaldo na; “Ang digmaang ito ay dapat iupagpatuloy at magbigay ng malaking tanda ng kalakasan upang ang Espanya ay maaaring mapilitan na ibigay ang ating mga kahilingan (reporma---D) at kung hindi ito mangyayari ay kanya tayong ituturing na isang mahinang lahi at kanilang siilin,bagkus siilin,at hindi tayo bigyan ng ating mga karapatan”( I Constantino ,1992;192-193; SAulo 1995:168 )

Noong Agosto1,1897, dumating si Pedro A.Paterno sa himpilan ni Aguinaldo taglay ang sulat na nagbibigay sa kanya ng karapatan upang maging taga-pamagitan o negosyador pangkapayapaan. SI Paterno ay isang mestisong Intsik,kabilang sa isang mayamang pamilya ng Maynila, isang abogadong nagtapos ng pagiging doktor ng batas sa Universidad Central de Madrid at nakisalamuha sa mga aristokratong uri sa Espanya. Kilala siyang mananalumpati,manunulat at historyador. may ambisyon siyang maging maharlikang Kastila o Spanish grandee. Naging matagumpay siya na alisin ang monopolya sa tabako at siya ay ginawaran ng Grand Cross of Isabela the Catholic na kaya siya binigyan ng titulong “Excellencia”(Excellency). Siya,

katulad ni Rizal at mga repormista ay may dalawang katapatan (dual loyalty) sa Espanya at Pilipinas.(Saulo 1995:172-173) Kaya tamang tama lang ang kanyang katangian na kapwa katanggap-tangap sa kapwa kastila at mga lider ng rebolusyon.

MGA NILALAMAN NG “PACTO de BIAK na BATO”

Pagkaran ng maraming ulit na pagkikipag-usap kay Aguinaldo at mga opesyales ng kanyang hukbo ,nabuo ang mga probisyon ng kasunduan: Una, Na Si Aguinaldo at kanyang piling mga kasamahan ay pumapayag na maipatapon (exile) sa Hong Kong at pinagkasunduang magbabayad ang pamahalaang Kastila ng 800,000 dolyar mehikano sa pamamagitan ng tatlong hulog (installments) ;Pangalawa, Ang Kabuuhan ng salapi ay ibabayad ng personal kay Aguinaldo at ang paggastos ng pera ay sa diskresyon at sa kaalaman ng kanyang mga kasama at ibang insurekto; Ikatlo, Dalawang Kastilang general bilang ‘hostage’ na pawawalan lamang kung sila ay nakarating na sa Hong Kong at matanggap na nila ang unang hulog na 400,000 dolyar mehikano. Ikaapat, ISUSUKO ng mga maghihimagsik ang kanilang mga armas sa pamahalaang Kastila. (Aguinaldo 1899/2002 :2-3: Aguinaldo 1964/1998:332333)

HUMINGI NG REPORMA SI AGUINALDO SA ESPANYA AT SINUKO ANG REBOLUSYON

Ang mga probisyong nabanggit sa itaas ay alam ng mga mag-aaral ng kasaysayan ngunit hindi nila pinagtuunan ng pansin (naliban na kay Prop.Renato Constantino ang ika apat na probisyon na di nasulat o “verbal agreement” batay sa ‘palabra de honor”(word of honor ) ng Espanya na “paalisin lahat ng mga frayles dito sa Filipinas at REFORMAS ng gobierno de autonomia” ( Aguinaldo 1899/2002: 4)

Ano-ano ang mga reporma o pagbabago na hiniling ni Aguinaldo ? Sa kanyang “Gunita” Ipinahayag niya ang mga ito: Alisin ang lahat ng samahan sa pamanampalataya (Frailes) sa Pilipinas, alalaon baga’y ang paghihimasok sa mga suliranin sa pamahalaang sibil. ; Pagkakaroon ng kalayaan sa politika at kalayaan sa pamamahayag; Na hindi ipatatapon ang sinumang Pilipino sa anumang bintang sa politika; Parehong karapatan ng Pilipino at Kastila sa gobiyerno dito sa Pilipinas; Dalawang kinatawang Pilipino sa Cortes ( Legislatura --D) sa Espanya;

Ibigay sa mga paring Pilipino ang mga kurato; paalisin dito sa Pilipinas ang mga Frayle; malayang salita at pamamahayag; Patas na kalagayan ng Tagalog (Filipino---D) at Kastila sa patanggap ng tungkulin, at iba pa .( Aguinaldo 1964/1998:333)

Kapareho ang mga repormang ito na hiningi ng mga elitistang nagsipagaral sa Europa na kagaya nina Jose Rizal, Marcelo H.del Pilar, Graciano Lopez Jaena at iba pa.

Hindi na ito mga kaisipan ng tunay na rebolusyonaryo; kompromista na at repormador na si Aguinaldo at hindi na ito ang tunay na mithiin ng Himagsikan ng 1896 na pinangunahan at pinagbuwisan ng buhay ni Supremo Andres Bonifacio - ang pagkakamit ng KALAYAAN hindi autonomya sa ilalim ng Espanya.

TINAWAG NI AGUINALDO NA MGA TULISAN AT BANDIDO ANG MGA AYAW SUMUKO SA MGA KASTILA

Noong Disyembre 16,1897, nagpalabas ng proklamasyon si Aguinaldo at ganito ang pagtuturing niya sa mga ayaw sumuko: “ Art.II; Aking ipinahahayag na labas sa hurisdisyon ng Gobyernong nag-organisa ng Revolusyon,at walang karapatan silang tawaging insurekto o rebolusyonaryo, at hindi sila makikinabang sa mga kawang-gawa o benepisyo na darating sa kinalabasan ng kasunduang sa pamahalaang Espanya,ang lahat ng hindi susunod sa aking mga ipinag-uutos na ISUKO ang mga sandata at ng lahat ng mga tumututol upang maisakatuparan ang mga probisyon ng programang pangkapayapaan. Art.III. At kung ang mga hindi sumunod o kaya ay humahadlang sa mga utos pangkapayapaan ay may ranko, katungkulan o trabaho sa pamahalaang rebolusyonaryo,sila kung gayon ay hindi kinikilala at ipinapahayag na labas sa aming hurisdiksyon at itinatakwil bilang TULISANES o mga BANDIDO.”(Taylor 1906/1971;Vol.I, 372)

Sa Manipesto ni Aguinaldo sa mga Maniolos (Pilipino---D) may petsang Disyembre 25,1897 , sinabi niya: “Aking ISINUSUKO ang aking mga armas sapagkat ang digmang ito ay makapagbibigay ng KAGULUHAN at KASAMAAN, imbis na kaligayahan. Hindi ito ang wakas na hinahangad ng

insureksyon....Viva Espanya! Viva Filipinas!” (Taylor,1906/1971:418)

Sa panayam ng pahayagang “Imparcial “ (Dis.26,1897) ,ipinagmalaki ni Aguinaldo ang kanyang di mababagong katapatan sa hari at pamahalaang Kastila, na ang Katipunan ay maghahangad ng independensiya at ito ang ibibabandila ni Andres Bonifacio na isang “malupit na tao” na kanyang ipinabaril at kasama niyang namatay ang Katipunan na ang kaniyang tunay na saloobin ay at ang Espanya ay walang dapat ikabahala dahil na wala silang ibang layunin kundi magkaroon ng REPORMA sa Pilipinas at ininsulto pa niya ang mga ayaw sumuko at tinawag silang “Katipoungoles” (Taylor 1906/1970:Vol.I,425-426)

Women and girls are particularly affected by these barriers, frequently having even less access than their male family members to resources, education, and decision making. Violence within the family also remains a pervasive problem, and the risk for maternal mortality

is three times higher for abused mothers.

Canada recognizes the importance of family well-being to sustainable development. The Government of Canada works to address hunger and malnutrition among the world’s most vulnerable people. We also promote sustainable economic growth as a key way to reduce poverty. By helping to improve child survival, maternal health, and access to education, Canada is securing the future of children and youth. In Haiti, for instance, the Government of Canada, in partnership with International Child Care Canada, has supported the training of 140 traditional birth attendants in maternal health services, which helped approximately 500 infants and their mothers, 1,500 children, and 1,600 pregnant women receive essential micronutrient supplements.

The Filipino communities are growing in Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver & Winnipeg. More & more events being passed along our way, we are looking to complement our team with volunteer photographers to cover all those events.

As with any community newspaper, we focus on local events such as community gatherings, picnics, sporting events, press conferences, dinners. Some gigs can be as quick as 15-20 minutes and other can be long, painful & boring. Our goal is to find photographers that we can assign work to on any given story. The majority of the events are during the evenings and weekend.

This work impacted traffic along 16 Avenue N.W. as well as portions of Bowness Road N.W. starting last May 6, 2013. If the spring weather permits, the rehabilitation should be completed by June 30, 2013.

Daily impacts to travel along 16 Avenue, Bowness Road and Shaganappi Trail N.W. will be available in The City of Calgary’s daily Road Closures and Lane Restrictions news release on the Calgary.ca/trafficinfo.

The general impact of the

bridge construction along 16 Avenue N.W. will be single lane closures in both directions during off-peak hours from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, Monday to Friday and from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

Bowness Road N.W. will also have single lane closures in both directions from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week and any night work that needs to be done during this construction will take place from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. The sidewalks under 16 Avenue N.W. along Bowness Road N.W. will be closed and pedestrians and cyclists are advised to use the river pathway as an alternative route.

This project was started in 2012 and was necessary as both bridges were nearing the end of their lifecycle. The scope of the project work focused on full deck rehabilitations and paving, new traffic barriers, subway wall replacement and subway walk widening on Bowness Road.

The Calgary Police Service is pleased to join their police agency partners and the Alberta College of Pharmacists in promoting National Prescription Drug Drop-Off Day, last Saturday, May 11, 2013.

Police across the country are concerned about the rising rate of recreational misuse of prescription drugs by youth in Canada, much of which is obtained from family medicine cabinets or friends. According to health professionals, opioid misuse in Canada is reaching a public health crisis due to rates of addiction, misuse and overdose deaths.

From an enforcement perspective, the criminality associated with prescription drug misuse includes fraudulent use of the health care system, pharmacy robberies, drug-impaired driving

and traditional drug trafficking.In addition, unused

pharmaceuticals can also be harmful to the environment when disposed of improperly.

Prescription drug abuse is everyone’s problem. We must all work together to address this complex societal issue.

Following a motorcycle collision last night, and with the weekend weather forecast looking ideal for motorcyclists, the Calgary Police Service is reminding motorists to be mindful of road safety.

In 2012, there were 232 motorcycle collisions in Calgary. Of those, 141 involved serious injuries and three were fatal.

Riders and drivers all have a responsibility to ensure everyone is safe on our roads.

The Calgary Police Service offers the following advice: For motorcycle operators:• Adhere to the rules of the road.• Stay out of blind spots. Make sure other drivers see you.• Be alert at intersections. Make eye contact with other drivers/riders before making your move.

• Protect yourself with the right gear and an approved motorcycle helmet.• Remember that when it comes to other drivers, your speed can be easily misjudged.• Ride defensively and make every effort to enhance your visibility.• Be aware of what is going on behind you. For drivers of other vehicles:• Adhere to the rules of the road.• Share the road – look twice for motorcyclists at intersections or when changing lanes.• Never underestimate the speed of a motorcycle. Their size makes their speed deceptive.• Always check your blind spot before changing lanes.

Residential permit applications soon to be accepted onlineFiled by Jose “Pepito” Magpayo

As part of The City’s eServices portfolio, Development & Building Approvals (DBA) is launching its largest online service to date with Residential ePermit. The new online tool will provide a start to finish service for contextual single and semi-detached residential permits, from application to final inspection that will maintain The City’s high standards of safety. “We’re going to make it easier to do business with The City”, notes Kevin Griffiths, Chief Building Official and Manager of Building Regulations. “Customers will have the ability to submit an application online, upload required documents and track the progress of their application using a single project number”, says Kevin.

Development & Building Approvals is working closely with its customers to bring all contextual single and semi-detached residential permits

online during four scheduled releases in 2013. The first release on April 30th will make single construction permits in developing areas available online to a small number of high volume home builders. “These first few builder submissions will be used to further improve the online tool, test the new paperless process and train additional employees before a customer wide release is announced,” says Kevin.

The City is grateful for the involvement of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association – Calgary Region during this first release. The association and its members participation has been instrumental in helping create an online tool that meets the needs and expectations of customers. “Cutting red tape by streamlining the permit process is of utmost importance to our members”, say Charron Ungar, President of CHBA-Calgary Region. “We

share the City’s enthusiasm for this project and look forward to the wider release to come”.

In addition to bringing residential permits online, Residential ePermit will implement a single residential permit process combining the contextual development permit and the building permit into a single application. A single project number will eliminate the need for multiple Job Access Codes, greatly improving customer convenience. In addition, the single permit processes well enable more collaborative reviews and decisions within the DBA business unit. DBA will continue to work closely with its customers to develop the new single permit process on an ongoing basis.

Residential ePermit will become available through The City’s View Information Specific To your Application (VISTA) online program.

City’s Surface Overlay Paving season comes to the beltlineFiled by Jose “Pepito” Magpayo

Please be advised that City crews have began pavement rehabilitation in the beltline area last May 1, 2013 with work continuing through to early July, between the hours of 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and in the evening hours. Three major road ways in this area will be affected by this year’s Surface Overlay Paving (SOL) program:• 12 Avenue S.W. from 14 Street S.W. to MacLeod Trail,• 1 Street S.E. from Pattison Bridge (south of 18 Avenue S.E.) to 9 Avenue S.E. and• MacLeod Trail from Victoria Bridge (south of 18 Avenue S.E.) to 9 Avenue S.E.

Parking and lane restrictions will be in effect on multiple streets in and around the area during construction. Single lane closures will occur during the day, between the hours of 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Multiple lane closures and side street closures will only occur during evenings and weekends, with Calgary Police Service on

site for assistance. During this time there will be improvements to concrete curb, gutter and sidewalks in the area. Crews will set up signs indicating where pedestrians should cross to avoid the construction work.

Up-to-date traffic restrictions and detours regarding this construction work will be available at Calgary.ca/trafficinfo.

“No Parking” signs will be placed approximately 12 hours before parking restrictions begin. Transit routes along this road will maintain regular scheduled service during construction.

Regular maintenance and upgrading is an important part of improving the safety and extending the life-cycle of our roadways. When more extensive repair methods are required, pavement rehabilitation is carried out through pavement rehabilitation or the Surface Overlay Paving program.

The Surface Overlay Paving program includes several important steps, such as sidewalk repair,

Paving is prioritized based on specific guidelines for road conditions. Roads that experience high traffic volumes need proactive rehabilitation to maintain the safety of the road as well as increase its service life. Performing preventative construction can avoid hazards like potholes, cracks and frost heaves and lessen the need for continuous maintenance.

Avila, Spain -the "City of Stones and Saints"

A city in central Spain of 58,245 people situated above sea level on a flat summit of a

rocky hill, Avila ("High Mountain"), also known as the "City of Stones and Saints", is notably well-known for having amazingly intact medieval city walls as well as a famous pilgrimage site for being the birthplace and home of Santa Teresa de Jesus, the first woman in Catholic history to receive the title "Doctor of the Church" in 1970.

The imposing walls of Avila, built in Romanesque style, date back to the medieval ages. It was King Alfonso, Spanish king of the autonomous region of Leon and Castille, who ordered the construction of this fortification after his conquest of Avila in 1090 by using the captured Moorish prisoners to build the walls as protection against the invading Moors.

The protective walls, still in perfect condition and extending 2,500 meters (8,202 ft.), encircle the old town. Shaped like an irregular rectangle and punctuated by 90 crenellated and heavily fortified towers and round turrets, the walls have 9 accessible gates of which the

Alcazar Gate (Puerta del Alcazar) as the most solemn and spectacular. During the medieval ages particularly in the 11th century the walls, in addition to its defensive function, guard the city against outbreaks of plagues and epidemics. Today, the entire system of the walls, declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985, is the largest fully and beautifully illuminated monument in the world.

For a small fee one can take a walk on the top of the walls.

A visit to the grey-granite Gothic Cathedral of Avila and to the Convent of Santa Teresa provides us some time for meditation and prayer.

Laid out in the shape of a Latin cross, the Cathedral is regarded as the first and oldest cathedral in Spain. Integrated into the city walls the cathedral with its magnificent altarpiece and beautiful stained glass windows has an external appearance of a strong temple fortress.

the primary shrine of Santa Teresa, also called Saint Teresa of Jesus. A Carmelite nun reformer and a prominent Spanish mystic and writer, Santa Teresa is the patron saint of headache sufferers and special Catholic writers. Her symbol is a heart, an arrow and a book.

The convent, located on the Plaza de la Santa and standing over the site of Teresa's birth, enshrines the saint's relics built shortly after her canonization as a saint in 1622, 40 years after death. The relics include a finger from her right hand, the sole of one of her sandals, her rosary beads, and a cord she used to

flagellate herself. In 1817, the Cortes, the legislative body of Spain, declares St. Teresa as the patron saint of Spain.

Outside the walled city is a little shrine known as "The Four Posts" (Los Cuatros Postes) located on a hill overlooking the walls, marking the spot where, at age 7, Santa Teresa's uncle stopped her from running off with her brother to seek martyrdom in battle with the Moors. There's a cross covered by 4-posted roofless canopy.

Don't leave Avila without tasting its world-famous sweets, the "Yema" (sugared egg yolks) made by local nuns and commonly sold in small shops throughout the city.
