Volunteer Stories

We’re fortunate to have received some wonderful testimonies from students who have been volunteering with two local arts organisations throughout the year.

Derby Arts Festival is proud to be in its third year using the University of Derby students’ help as volunteers in a variety of capacities.

Kassimali Ladha and Dan Whiteman, pictured above with the latest programme, are both second year students of Business Studies and Marketing. They have taken on the challenging task of doing some real marketing – a fi rst for the Festival. DAF is a charity now in its 107th year. Kass and Dan have been looking at a programme of modernisation. This has included looking at merchandising as a new stream of income. As a result silicone wristbands are to be sold, bearing the DAF logo, at the Festival for the fi rst time this year. Also a fi rst, Kass and Dan have been involved in developing questionnaires that they plan to use during the Festival which runs through April and May 2015. These are intended to garner the views of participants and others, particularly ideas and ways to build on and refresh the Festival’s success.

The connection between DAF and the UoD started when Viktor Horecny, now in his fi nal year studying BSc (Hons) in Information Technology, took on the awesome job of setting up a new website for DAF (see www.derbyartsfestival.co.uk). Viktor did a fantastic job of this. His work has been ably followed up by Jensen Lowe, a second year student on the

same course, pictured here. Jensen has been maintaining the WordPress-based site for DAF whilst looking at developing another experimental approach of his own alongside the main website.

Margaret Dewhurst, a Council Member of DAF, is delighted with the help and support given by the team – and they are all seen as real team members. Indeed everyone at DAF is very grateful for the contribution they are making.

Buoyed up by the great relationship DAF has enjoyed with UoD, Margaret, who is also on the board of 1623 Theatre Company Ltd based at QUAD in Derby, has recently worked with Ben Spiller, Artistic Director of the company, to recruit two new Marketing Trainees.

Sahil Yadav and Cameron Bhachu, fi rst year students of Business Management and Marketing, are now working with Margaret to help 1623 with social media, a key plank of the company’s marketing communications. They are also to undertake a major task in helping one of 1623’s four strands understand what attracts people to that division of the company and thus enable it to build on its success with further recruits. As part of their work critiquing the Business Plan, more ways in which they can support 1623 are emerging at each meeting!

“It’s hard to imagine not having the help and stimulus of these able students”, says Margaret.

Long may it continue!

Thanks to Margaret and her teams for sharing their stories with us. If you’d like to fi nd out more about either organisation visit W: www.derbyartsfestival.co.uk and W: www.1623theatre.co.uk

If you would like your story to be featured in the newsletter, contact us at E: [email protected] and we will get in touch. The next volunteering newsletter will be published in October 2015, we have a lot of opportunities for you in this newsletter that could contribute to your story!
