MAY 27th MEETING SPEAKER – DAWN TACK
Please Welcome Dawn Tack from Garden’s Plus to our Wednesday,
May 27th Meeting. Dawn has this to say:
I'm just like many of you passionate about gardening. I like to add new
varieties to my gardens (only I am obsessed and out of control ha ha ).
Because I am located in the country and with water consciousness being a
necessity, I grow plants that require little upkeep, fairly drought resistant
and are very undemanding. My focus is on low maintenance perennials.
So from the street sign garden to large estate garden I can guide you how
to grow so we do not have to be slaves to it. Gardening should be fun and
rewarding!
Gardens Plus is located in a small hamlet called Donwood just two minutes
east of Peterborough, Ontario on County Road #4(Parkhill Road East/the
old Warsaw Road). I grow perennials specializing in Daylilies and Hosta. I
am in zone 5b. The collection of Daylilies and hosta is up to approximately
750/450+ each. I also try my best to offer many of the new and exciting
perennials on the market as they become available.
Gardens Plus nursery was opened in spring of 1997. The only garden that
existed at that time was some shrubs against the foundation, cedar and the
perimeter surrounded by common lilacs. With every year we add to the
projects. At this time gardens and stock beds are taking over about 80% of
the original grass area. Soon there will be none! Come for a tour. Keep in
mind we are open until July 31

COUNTY GARDEN SHOW - Saturday, JUNE 13 – we will need volunteers to help on the day of the show. Please email
Anne Reeves and she will put you where we need you most. Mary Jenkins will be calling you to bake something for the

HASCAP PLANTS – Note from Penny Stewart
It has come to my attention that some of you that recieved haskaps have experienced some issues with powdery mildew and with plant survival. The late spring made it somewhat more of a challenge to handle the plants but please be assured that the plants are guaranteed for 1 year. Le Have did replace plants for both myself and Rose Odell during the time we were nurturing them along and have been quick to get back to us . They want to make sure that all customers are happy with their plants .Please forward this email to all your members to ensure them that Lehave are behind their plants and are willing to help.
This is just a reminder about how to grow your haskaps and contact information for the supplier Le Have if you have questions or concerns.

LeHave have been very responsive with replacing plants that have not survived and have been working closely with the OHA representative that was leading this initiative.
Le Have have been made aware of some quality problems and that any plants that have failed will be replaced at no charge and are guaranteed for a full year. With plants and agriculture in general, things can happen and they have been very helpful. If you have a problem with powdery mildew which some people have indicated here is some information.
Powdery mildew can be a problem due to the cooler nights and warmer days which we have had and can also be a problem that develops in transport .
Powdery mildew can be controlled by weekly spraying one table spoon of baking soda in one gallon of water with few drops of soap. The other controlling method is spraying one part of milk with three parts of water. Powdery mildew may cause the leaf drop but doesn’t kill the plants. Once the temperature starts warming up and the plants are exposed to proper air circulation outdoors the mildew disappears as well Another recommendation is to use an organic mildew spray, found at a local garden shop.
Keep in mind these are starter plants The nursery plants (plugs) have been potted into 3.5 inch pots and should be
further potted up into 1 gallon pots and sunk into the garden and kept in the pots for up to 18 months. Use a standard
potting mix . They need to reach a reasonable size before being planted out in the garden – weeds can be an issue, in
terms of competition for nutrients and moisture. You can plant direct to the garden but you must keep weeds down
make, sure they are watered and fertilized to give the plants a chance to get going.
Fertilizer: Compost tea is recommended over commercial fertilizer
Mulching; Keep plants mulched once planted it reduces weeds and helps retain moisture
Water: Water is very important for the first few growing seasons until they have a well established root system
Sun: Grow them in a sunny spot at least 6 hrs a day
CIVIC GARDENS APPLICATION Each year the Prince Edward Horticultural Society (PECHS) distributes proceeds from its Ticket Raffle for Civic Garden related Projects/Programs to community organizations in the County of Prince Edward. Deadline:
To be considered for funding from this years budget, please complete this application with requested attachments, and include a self-addressed stamped envelope. Return to PECHS no later than June 12th, 2015. Mail: PECHS, 103 North Beach Rd. N, Consecon, ON, K0K 1T0 or by Email: [email protected] (for more info or Questions). Applicants will be notified of the final decision by PECHS Board. Application on Requirements:
The Organization must be in the geographic area of Prince Edward County.
Signage acknowledgement of Funding provided by PECHS is required to be placed at Garden site.
Request acknowledge of PECHS funding in all organization’s PR.
Request receipt for all grant monies spent.
On completion of the Garden, digital pictures must be provided to PHCHS for records and/or display no later then September 1st, 2015. Project Maximum Request is $50.00. Under special circumstances and substantial merit, PECHS will consider larger grants. Note from the President:
We are now gearing up for the County Garden Show on Saturday June 13. We will have the bag
signs available at the meeting so if you have a place to display please sign up for signs. Please help
us out with this important fundraising event. We also have raffle tickets available that need to be
sold before the event. They will be available at the meeting. I am so thankful for all the hard
work this year of our members and board members who have helped with our fundraising events so
far and for your continued help. The plant sale at the Wellington Market went well with some
improvements discussed for next year. We needed some help with pricing but were very pleased with
the number of plant donations and variety of plants. We probably could have had a master gardener
on hand to answer questions as well. Congratulations on a successful 1 st plant sale! If you know of
any organization wanting some Civic Garden funding I have included a copy of the application form.

Notes from the May 19th Executive Meeting
The board met on Tuesday at the Re/Max office in Picton due to the holiday on Monday. The meeting was well
attended and the following topics were discussed.
Connons Nursery sent us a flyer telling us about their programme to offer 10% of sales till June 15/15 back to
the Horticultural Society. Thanks to Connons
Joe Kitchen from the Fair Board asked for a donation to the County Fair. We approved a $50 donation.
Prince Edward County Collegiate asked for a bursary for a local student entering college or university in a
horticultural/agriculture. We approved a $500 bursary.
Members: We have 56 paid members and 447 facebook friends.
Hospital Gardens –Thank you to Janet Skelton and Elizabeth Cowan have been working at the Hospital Gardens
already. John Garside will be organizing the planting and care of the hospital gardens.
Mini Shows – due to the lack of interest in the mini shows we plan to have only three mini shows in 2016
Fundraising has greatly improved over last year with money from Seedy Saturday, the Plant Sale at the
Wellington Market and the sale of gardening books. The Plant Sale at the Wellington Market was a success with
lots of donations from members and help on the day from Gayla and Reg, Anne and Howard, Bert and Mary and
Pia! Thanks.
The Garden Show plans are going well with vendors booked. Set up time will be on Friday June 12 from 6:00
p.m. to 9:00 and on Saturday morning from 7:00 a.m. till 9:00. We need help from the members for set up and
to help out on the day. The Mayor has been invited to open the show. We have Raffle tickets to sell. Please
help us with this. We need someone to spend the day at the show selling tickets and the more sell ahead of
time the better. All the money from the Raffle is awarded to our Civic Garden applicants. The Blue Bird room
with have the Design Section of the Flower Show and the non-profit groups will also display in this building.
A volunteer appreciation barbecue will be held at Anne and Howard’s at a date to be determined.
Elizabeth Cowan has done a tremendous job with the advertising for the Garden Show this year. We are truly
grateful.
A pre-show meeting will be held the week before the show.
