Hunting for treasure at low tide.

Mudlarkers are the people who comb the shore of London’s River Thames. Originally a term for the city’s poor who scraped a meagre living by scavenging in the river’s mud, it has now been adopted by a new breed of treasure hunters.

A prized find for mudlarkers, a piece of Bartmann jug. Decorated German stoneware used to transport food, drink and goods dated 1600-20 complete with the face impressed on the neck of the jug.

This shard of pottery painted with a willow patter is unusual because it contains both doves.

It’s the unexpectedness of mudlarking and the peacefulness, which appeals to people, “the whole world is buzzing above you but down here on the banks, you’re just in your own world”.
