SOCIAL SECURITY WARNS PUBLIC ABOUT Caller ID “Spoofing” In recent months, Social Security has issued several warnings about new phone call scams. The calls often display a caller ID of 1-800-772-1213 which is the real Social Security Customer Service number; other calls may display the real Social Security Fraud Hotline number on the caller ID screen. These calls are scams us-ing caller ID “spoofing” – showing false caller ID’s. In some cases, the caller says that Social Security does not have all of your personal information on file. Oth-er callers claim Social Security needs additional information so the agency can increase your benefit pay-ment, or that Social Security will terminate your benefits if they do not confirm your information. Callers sometimes state that your Social Security number is at risk of being deactivated or suspended because it’s connected to a serious crime. Any threatening phone call from Social Security is fraudulent and you should just hang up. If you want to report a suspicious call, you can call the Fraud Hotline at 800-269-0271, Monday through Friday, 10am to 4pm EST. If you have questions about suspicious calls from Social Security or Medicare, or other health insurance is-sues, trained SHINE counselors offer free, confidential counseling on all aspects of Medicare and related health insurance programs. Call your local Senior Center to schedule a phone consultation or in-person ap-pointment. For other SHINE related matters, call your Regional SHINE Headquarters at Mystic Valley Elder Services: 781-388-4845.

Arthritis includes more than 100 different conditions that affect joints and the surrounding tissue. The most common form of arthritis in the United States is osteoarthritis, followed by gout and rheumatoid arthritis. Arthritis affects people of all ages, including children. Although the risk of developing arthritis increases with age, more than half of adults with arthritis are younger than 65. About 1 in 4 US adults has arthritis. Key Facts Arthritis affects 1 in 4 adults in the USA. That’s 54 million men and women. As the US population ages and obesity increases, the number of adults with arthritis is expected to increase to 78 million by 2040. Arthritis is a leading cause of disability in the US. Twenty four million adults report limitations due to arthritis. People with arthritis can manage symptoms and reduce pain by learning self-management strategies and being physically active Prevention tips Early diagnosis and appropriate management of arthritis, including self-management activities can help people with the condition live well without pain. Everyone should exercise regularly to stay healthy, including people with arthritis. Physical activity has been proven to reduce arthritis pain and restore function. There are proven exercise programs, including the ones that our COA provides, that can help people with arthritis increase their physical activity safely and comfortably. Maintaining a healthy weight has been shown to decrease the risk of developing osteoarthritis and gout and may decrease disease progression and arthritis related activity limitations. Take the time to keep yourself healthy and moving. Spring is a great time to get outdoors and take a walk and enjoy the beautiful trees and flowers that are coming into full bloom.
