Last month i took part in the Ray D’Arcy 5km race hosted by the Kilkenny Fit for Life crew. There was nearly 1000 people who turned up to run, jog and walk the 5km from the Watershed Kilkenny. It was fantastic to see all those who turned out to complete the 5km, many of whom were only running the 5km for the first time. Ray started off his week of 5kms in Kilkenny and it was brilliantly organised by the Fit for Life Crew. So if you’re thinking of getting on the fitness bandwagon start off with a walk. Last month also saw the start of the Kilkenny Walking Festival which highlighted Kilkenny’s beautiful walks and trails. Check out www.kilkennywalkingfestival.ie for more details. Or if you are feeling more energetic the 2012 Road Race Series will be running from the end of April to the end of May. They run over 5 nights and start off at 2 miles going up to 6 miles. More details can be found on www.kilkennytriathlonclub.comThe Kilkenny Cat Laugh’s festival was also
launched in April, it’s a fixture in the Kilkenny calendar at this stage. We all look forward to the buzz and talent that the weekend brings. Check out their website for more information
on the exciting acts that will feature in this years festival. www.thecatlaughs.comI was one of the many who turned up to the Vintage Kilo Sale hosted by the lovely Blanaid Hennessey of Shutterbug. The doors opened at 11am and within minutes Langtons ballroom
was filled with enthusiastic vintage shoppers. The lads and ladies at Shutterbug did a great job and it’s surely to be an annual event now!
JMM beautiful handcrafted cards will be for sale on Sunday 6th May in Workhouse Crafts, MacDonagh Junction Shopping Centre. You can also get them at Stone House Books and online at www.jmmcards.etsy.com and www.facebook.com/jmmcards.
The Mediterrane-inn is Kilkenny’s newest restaurant based on Kieran Street. They specialise in authentic Kebabs, they are officially opening on the 26th of April. Make sure to pop down for a taste of Sunshine!

Neon BrightsThe 80’s is a decade that many of us would like to forget, bad hair, stone washed denim and shoulder pads! It’s a decade that keeps on giving as year after year designers revive the 80’s in their collections. Neon is one of those trends coming back.. Whether you want a full on splash of neon or a subtle hint there is something to suit everyone.
Want it! Need it!
The Peter Pan EffectPeter Pan collars are making a comeback this summer. You probably last wore them as a child on a dress. This summer, wear it with high waisted skirts or shorts and a wedge heel to compliment the look.
Feeling CraftyNothing on Tele and you’re at a loose end? Why don’t you get crafting? Take up knitting (Deevey’s in the Retail Centre, James Street sells wool) or get painting and create a masterpiece for your wall!
For the BirdsYour garden may have been in hibernation for the winter and now your thinking of having summer barbeques and lying out for a sunbath (provided we get the weather!) So to make it look prettier why not decorate it with this lovely bird house. Who says your home is the only place you can dress up!

Karen FordeKaren Forde, a.k.a “Miss Curvy” is a rising star in the world of Plus/Real-Size Modelling in Ireland. After winning “Simply Be Curvy” last year, out of 6500 women nationwide, Karen was catapulted to fame by being signed to the prestigious Andrea Roche Model Agency with whom the likes of Georgia Salpa and Roz Purcell, reside. She became the face of the Simply Be in the UK and Ireland and has taken the modelling world by storm. She is pursuing work internationally within the industry and has a cult following on Facebook under her pseudonym “Miss Curvy ©”. Karen is a chameleon of epic proportions! She bides her time as an actress, (currently in a BBC Comedy Drama and a well-known national ad campaign) artist, model, stylist and blogger and fits in mammoth hikes in the Dublin mountains on her days off! Just finished painting theatre backdrops for the majestic “Beauty and the Beast”, by award-winning, Ballinrobe Musical Society in Mayo, Karen has returned to the capital to her full-time modelling. She adores the demands of working with her home agency AR Models, her regional agency Catwalk Models and most recently been signed to the prestigious Brigitte Models in Germany. At present, she is just beginning trompe l’oeil paintings for a premises on Drury Street in Dublin and has been invited to style a shoot for “Thread” Magazine. Karen informs us,“I was asked to join “onestepcloser2fabulous.ie” by the talented founder, Deborah Leonard, as Fashion and Culture Editor, under my pseudonym, “byMissCurvy” ©” This blog is very high profile as Deborah has been working in the make-up and fashion industry for over twenty years and she shares amazing tips and fantastic cosmetics competitions. With over 100,000 hits and rising since I joined, it is becoming a very exciting prospect for me! I debate issues regarding the buzzing international Curvy Revolution, real-size women, modern woman and the path to success and failure, which is a priority for me and various other lifestyle and culture aspects of society both here and abroad. As a writer and more-so as a real/plus-size model, I have been very fortunate in my career to date to promote “size healthy” and the fuller
figure. I aim to reiterate the fact that curves and embracing personal shape, is the healthiest advice anyone could give you. Having love for your body regardless of what size you are is the only key to happiness. Deborah and I collaborate to bring an all encompassing blog that details the newest skincare and cosmetics from Clarins to Nux, and the newest fashion trends from Jasmine Guinness to Simone Rocha”.Karen’s photo shoots, appearances on Xpose, Ireland AM, RTE’s shoppingfromhome.ie, online and her collaborations with experimental photographers and artists has seen her become more and more in demand both here and overseas. She is the new face of Lola Rose Boutique Ireland, Kilkenny, from where all of these Summer Collection pieces were chosen for the May issue. Karen is in love with Lola Rose and the choice of unique fashion on offer. This boutique showcases numerous designers including Caroline Kilkenny (on front cover) and Matthew Williamson. Miss Curvy adores donning the Olivia Rubins vintage numbers and feeling like Veronica Lake on her shoots! “Curvy girls have got it, so they should flaunt it!” A recent collaboration with Motion Studios on Harcourt Street, on house images and videowork has been explosive for the Mayo girl who will now be appearing in a high fashion editorial in a well known magazine in June. She cites them as being superb: motionstudios.ie. Karen will be doing a very exciting project with Oxendales in the coming months also, which is hush-hush, at the moment and more acting is definitely on the cards. Miss Curvy loves the fashion industry and is happy to be firmly placed in it, as it provokes her sense of experimentation. She will be featured in “The Curvy Girl Guide” © by Vicki Mooney, due to be published this year which she is ridiculously excited about aswell. So, as they say, watch this (curvy) space and follow “Miss Curvy” on Facebook and Twitter! Catch up with “Miss Curvy” on: facebook.com/MissCurvy twitter.com/byMissCurvy onestepcloser2fabulous.ie www.k4d.ie

Golden BrownIf you’re pale like most of the Irish population and the thoughts of getting your pasty milk bottle limbs out for the summer fills you with dread, read on! Here are a few tried and tested methods of getting that healthy glow to your skin.
1 ShaveBefore you apply your fake tan make sure to shave. However, you’ll want to shave the day before you plan to apply product. Applying sunless tanner right after shaving can cause skin irritation, especially if you have sensitive skin.
2 ExfoliateThis might be the most important step in the process. Exfoliating evens out your skin, which allows the sunless tanning product to go on smooth. Use a gentle exfoliant (think beads, not granules) from head to toe.
3 MoisturizeDry skin results in a patchy, uneven tan. Apply a thin layer of an oil-free moisturizer. (Oily lotions prevent the tanner from absorbing fully.) Allow it to soak in for at least 10 minutes.
4 ApplyIf you’re using a gel or mousse, start at your feet and work up slowly. Aim for even product distribution. Aerosol sprays are more difficult to control than gels and mousses, but if you don’t have anyone to help you apply the product to your back, an aerosol is your best bet. Just be sure to position yourself in front of a large, well-lit mirror. Make sure to wipe your palms as you go with a wet facecloth. If that doesn’t work try some cold tar soap to get rid of stubborn stains. To apply to the back of your hands without getting it on your palms. Squeeze some product onto the back of your hand and rub it in with the other hand. Make sure its as even as possible. Leave it to dry for 10mins before washing your hands.
5 Streaking & Dark SpotsWait 3 hours after application to check for any mistakes; it takes that long for the product to absorb fully. If you need to lighten the tan overall, massage lotion into your skin, then gently wipe with a washcloth. Exfoliate anywhere you discover dark patches, to even out the tone. If you have streaks, soak cotton wool in an alcohol toner and carefully dab it along the streaks to balance them with the rest of your skin.
Tip: Tan before you go to bed or wear loose fitting clothes for best results. You won’t get any white marks from tight fitting clothes rubbing off the tan.
Tip: Always choose a colour close to your skin tone. If your pale two applications of a light tanner is better than looking like an oompa loompa.
And if that’s all too much for you follow steps 1-3 and go to your trusted beautician for an all over spray tan. Just make sure to do this one or two days before an event. It goes on quite strong and also needs to be washed off before you put on your beautiful guna!!
The Trilogy Self-Tanning Instant Bronzing Gel recently got 9 out of 10 in the Sunday Times. Fuss-free, quick drying and easy to apply, Instant Bronzing Gel provides an immediate golden glow that develops into a rich bronze tan over two to three hours.

4 Classy Bird
Inspired by childhood make-and-do, Lynn Kenny’s amazing mixed media art depicting birds and sheep is quirky and colourful. When she was young, Lynn would create patchwork out of bits of old clothes left over from her mother’s dressmaking. Using stitching to join different materials together she has created pieces full of colour and humour. As well as original pieces, Kilkenny Design Centre carries a series of Lynn’s well-priced prints, starting at €35.00.

THE GIGTHE ORIGINAL GODFATHER OF SOUL “ROB STRONG” EVERY TUESDAY NIGHT @ 9PM IN TYNAN’S BRIDGE HOUSE BAR.
In the early 1970’s nobody in Ireland personified the raw energy of rock and blues music like Rob Strong, one of the most unique voices of the era. He’s perhaps destined to be remembered as father of Andrew of Commitments fame, but Rob Strong is a force to be reckoned with in his own right. In the 1960s he was a key member of well-known showband The Plattermen who quickly gained a reputation as one of the best showbands in the whole of Ireland. This was no mean feat because show bands were the second most popular career option in Ireland at the time. The first was emigration.
Rob Strong and his band now play live in Tynan’s Bridge House Bar every Tuesday night whilst also providing excellent entertainment at weddings and events and is often accompanied by his daughter Niamh, another budding musician in the making.
THE FilmMARVEL AVENGERS ASSEMBLEKILKENNY OMNIPLEX MAY 2012
Nick Fury is director of S.H.I.E.L.D, an international peace keeping agency. The agency is a who’s who of Marvel Super Heroes, with Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. When global security is threatened, Nick Fury and his team will need all their powers to save the world from disaster. You don’t need to be steeped in the Marvel universe to follow events here, but it really helps to have seen Thor, primarily because Thor’s brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) is once again the bad guy. Several big laughs that are as good as anything most comedies can muster are just a bonus with this movie. Some of Tony Stark’s one-liners, especially when he’s making fun of his teammates, are priceless and who knew the Hulk was so funny? It’s the best Iron Man film to date, and the best Hulk film by a big green mile. The Batman may still have the edge when it comes to depth and darkness, and when the Dark Knight rises in a couple of months he may well steal his crown back as the ultimate avenger. But rarely, whether comic book or not, have the movies been this much fun.

How do you like working in a family business?
From going over to Ballyminane Mills from a very young age, I would have a very good relationship with my Uncle Aidan and my Aunt Kathleen. They still live at the mill.
What has been the reaction to the Flour since its launched last October?
The reaction to the flour has been very good. People would be used to the taste of flour such as Odlums so they really notice a difference when they taste Uncle Aidan’s. Using French burr stones is the unique factor to our flour. If you go back to 40 years ago, and look at water mills around the country, many of those mills would have french burr stone, before Odlums came along. Ballyminane Mill is the only water power mill in Leinster producing flour at a commercial level. If the mill was going on an eight hour working day, it would produce 2 tonne of flour.
What led you to going on Dragon’s Den?
A year ago, myself and my partner Mia were watching it on tv and decided we would give it a go. Thought no more about it until November we saw an advertisement in the Independent newspaper and filled up the form
online. We went through two interviews and then made it to the show. The whole reason was to get one or two dragons to invest in us.
What has it been like working with the two dragons?
Bobby and Niall have been great to work with and we have been building up a good relationship. They are nice fellows and have been down to the mill a couple of times before the Dragon’s Den was aired. We have also had a film crew from Screentime Shinawil visit us to do a piece for “Dragon’s Den On Tour”. I’m looking forward to this as it will give us 10 minutes of air time and publicity.
Where do you see Uncle Aidan’s going in the future? would you like to see it being as big as Odlums?
We have set 3 year targets. However the ultimate goal would be to make it a household name with a view to exporting.
Will you be exporting it to the Irish ex Pat community?
Well, Bobby and Niall have ideas on doing a bit of exporting to America, not only the product and where it’s ground, but the story behind it. The Mill was established in 1832 according to the Griffiths valuation, however it actually dates back to the late 1700’s. There is also a saw and corn mill which are powered by
water turbine. It is self sufficient and eco friendly so it ticks all the boxes.
How important is it to keep the everything authentic with the flour production to you?
The main selling point of Uncle Aidan’s flour is the authenticity of it. The fact that the flour is ground on a french burr stone in a traditional authentic manner is the core of the business.
How many employees do you have?
At the moment I carry out all the work on the flour myself however I am looking at taking in 2 lads part time, with a view to taking on somebody full time. One of the most time consuming elements is the manual bagging of the flour which I am doing on my own. We aim to invest in a bagging machine in the near future which would reduce the bagging time from 11 hours down to 2 hours.
Can people visit the mill to see how flour is made?
We are inundated with phone calls and emails from people who want to have a look at the mill. However as we are dealing in food, and the fact that is a working mill, we have standards to adhere to and it would not be achievable at the moment. We will be looking at opening the mill in august on a Sunday, for tours.
Uncle Aidan’s FlourBallyminane Mills takes great pride in producing the highest quality of stoneground wholemeal flour. Recently John Murphy from Ballyminane Mills secured an investment of €20,000 from Dragon’s Bobby Kerr and Niall O’Farrell in return for 15% equity in Uncle Aidan’s Stone Ground Flour business on the popular TV show, Dragon’s Den. We chat with John about his unique business and where he sees Uncle Aidan’s in the future.

Cleeres is a little gem at the end of Parliament Street. You won’t miss it with it’s stand out red exterior on a terrace of pubs. It has an old world feel, you’d nearly expect to find it in a small town. It’s an ideal place to go have a bit of lunch during the day or a quiet or not so quite drink depending on the night. With live music every weekend, it has hosted
some of the most famous bands, singers, comedians and actors over the years. Its intimate venue at the end of the bar makes it feel like you are watching a gig in the comfort of your own home. For more information on upcoming gigs in Cleeres find them on Facebook or email them on [email protected]

A stone’s throw away.......If by some miracle you run out of things to do during your stay in Kilkenny city, or you simply want to see what else the county has to offer, then read on.....Each month we will pick a beautiful destination roughly twenty minutes outside Kilkenny city for you to visit. This month we have selected the magnificent 16th Century Crucifix carving at Johnstown Catholic Church, Johnstown, Co. Kilkenny.
Getting thereUsing Kilkenny Castle as your starting point, turn in the direction of High St and at the traffic lights turn right towards an Poc fada (Public house). Continue along Rose Inn Street and over John’s
bridge. At the top of John Street continue straight through the traffic lights and at the roundabout take the first exit onto the Castlecomer road. At the next roundabout take the first exit and continue straight over Green’s bridge. At the next roundabout take the second exit on the far right. Now follow the course of the road towards Freshford. When you arrive in Freshford, continue straight ahead then take the first right and at the next intersection turn left onto Old Bridge St. You are now travelling along the R693. In less than 14km’s you will arrive in Johnstown and the Church is on right-hand side just before you arrive in the centre of the town.
So what is it all about?
This stunning piece of medieval sculpture was originally situated in the nearby monastic site at Fertagh. It now rests in a niche on the boundary wall of the modern Catholic Church on the left hand side as you head towards the church. It is claimed that it may have formed part of a tomb for a local family, the Fitzpatricks around the late 1600’s. It was brought to its present resting place around 1800 along with other architectural fragments from the nearby monastic site at Fertagh. For its time or anytime for that matter it represents a truly exquisite piece of stone carving. It is a rare piece of pictographic art to survive from this era is such a well preserved state. The figure of Christ is set against a cross wearing a loin-cloth with flowing folds
gathered up into a large knot on his left side. The intensely dramatic expression on his face is made all the more poignant by the disfiguring gap left where a new nose (which has since been lost) was inserted after the original was broken in antiquity. The schematized arms and hands are made up of grooved planes, as are the ribs, which would do honour to any modern sculpture, and the angularly laid legs and feet beneath the loin-cloth give added asymmetrical treatment to the lower part of the figure.

A FLAVOUR OF KILKENNYIt’s always good to know what you’re walking into when dining out, especially in these recessionary times where we are becoming more aware of good service, good value and good food. Here’s a few suggestions on
where to go whether you want French cuisine, pub grub or just a decent cup of coffee.
You can find Campagne by the arches of the disused Kilkenny to Portlaoise railway line, in a brand new building in Gas House Lane. Opening its doors in 2008, Campagne serves modern French food using the very best of local and Irish produce. The interior features a modern interpretation of country life which was painted by Kilkenny artist Catherine Barron. As Paolo Tullio wrote, this restaurant “has seriously raised the bar for dining in Kilkenny”.Irish Times restaurant critic Tom Doorley listed Campagne in his best restaurants of 2008, stating “Campagne is outstanding… giving good old Kilkenny a restaurant of the calibre that a fine city like this should”. Lunch is served Friday & Saturday 12:30pm - 2:30pm. Sunday Lunch 12:30pm - 3:00pm. Early Bird Menu is available Tuesday to Friday 6pm - 7pm. Dinner is served from Tuesday to Saturday 6pm - 10pmDirections - Just off John’s Green, very near the railway station and McDonagh Junction Shopping Centre.€€€€€
Rated as the most popular restaurant in Kilkenny by Trip Advisor, La Rivista offers fine Italian dining to suit all tastes and budgets. Driven by a passion for good food, fine wines, top class service and above all, great value for money, Therese Maguire and Jennifer Quinn provide a relaxed atmosphere in which to enjoy a wonderful meal. La Rivista is one of those restaurants that you will visit not once, not twice but many times. Dinner is served from Monday to Saturday 5pm – 10pm, and Sundays & Bank Holidays 12.30pm - 10pmDirections - Close to the Court House on Parliament Street and across from the Watergate Theatre.€€€
If you can’t decide how hungry you are but know you would definitely sip on a glass of wine then I would recommend you head for The Grapevine. This Wine & Tapas bar offers visitors to Kilkenny something completely unique. Relax on the sofas with the best cup of coffee in town and watch the world go by or enjoy wine and beers from around the world with their delicious antipasti & tapas menu. The Grapevine has been described as ‘The most welcome addition to Kilkenny nightlife in years’! Always great service, atmosphere and incredible value for money, I can guarantee you will end up eating more tapas than you thought possible!Directions - Situated on historic Rose Inn Street opposite the tourist office and just a few paces from The Parade.€€€
For lovers of coffee shops with a difference, Cafe Mocha is a must-see. The shop style of this cafe is wonderful and very unique with a little ribbon boutique greeting you as you come up the stairs. The food is like some-thing you would see in a five star restaurant and the service is friendly and relaxed. Attention to detail is very prevalent in this establishment even down to the presenta-tion of the food. This is the perfect place to take a breather from shopping and grab a bite to eat but whatever you do, leave some room for those gorgeous chocolates!!Directions - Located centrally on High Street on the first floor very close to the Town Hall and Paco.€€€
One of my favourite comfort food meals would have to be the Vol au Vents in Kytelers Inn. This pub and restaurant delivers excellent food and a history unlike any other. Two things to note before eating in Kytelers, you won’t be waiting long for your food and you won’t leave hungry. While Kytelers Inn is not a formal Restaurant it’s unique atmosphere and traditional dishes make it an ideal spot for casual dining.Lunch is served from 12.00 - 3.00. The Bar Menu is available Sun & Mon 3.00 - 8.00 and Tues - Sat 3.00 - 9.00Directions - Located on St. Kieran’s Street, close to Dunnes Stores and the Market Yard car park. €€

www.thecatlaughs.comKilkenny is gearing up for a cracker of a bank holiday weekend when The Cat Laughs Comedy Festival returns with a world-class comedy pro-gramme Now in its 19th year, The Cat Laughs Com-edy Festival continues to be one of the most eagerly anticipated festivals on the summer calendar.
This year’s line-up sees the return of our top resident funny folk together with a collection of internationally renowned comics from the UK, USA, Canada and Aus-tralia. Ever mindful of audience’s purse strings, the festival has substantially reduced ticket prices so everyone can enjoy more comedy for less. Tickets are on sale now at www.thecatlaughs.com
This year’s hot news from Cat Laughs HQ is the debut performance from the com-edy’s much loved grump, Jack Dee. Following a six year absence from stand-up, one of Britain’s finest come-dians is back, agonising over the slightest of annoyances and misdemeanours. Famous for his surly expression and sardonic humour this grouchy, deadpan com-ic genius is sure to be a highlight of
this year’s programme.
Local Irish talent will be out in force again this year, headed up by Irish-American comedian Des Bishop. One of the most enigmatic forces on the interna-tional comedy circuit today,
Des returns with his latest routine which show-cases his new-found passion for drumming and his love of wordplay. Jason Byrne is also back with a bang! The outrageously funny and excitable comic returns to Kilkenny with his trademark brand of high-octane intelligent lunacy sure to tickle
your funny bone. And Of-faly’s finest and master of off-the-cuff delivery, Neil Delamere will be back in the Marble City to share his hilarious anecdotes and topical story-telling blended with his usual witty audience interac-
tion. Joining Neil is Colin Murphy who will add his distinct fusion of topical satire and acute observa-tional material to the mix. Other household favourites flying the flag for Ireland are Barry Murphy, Karl Spain, Chris Kent, Fred Cooke, Colm O’Regan, and Gearoid Farrelly.
Speaking at the launch, Rebecca Austin, Festival Artistic Director
said; ‘We’re really excited about the programme for this year’s Festival. It’s a great balance of people’s favourites and exciting new shows, curated exclusively for Cat Laughs. I’ve had fun working on new ideas with some of Ireland’s most inventive comics. We are
happy to be welcoming some of the UK’s best comedy talent. We’ll be showing them what all the fuss is about in Kilkenny this June.’

Do you know how many contributions you have paid and if your record is up to date and correct? Are you aware of the changes to Contributory State Pensions ? (Budget 2012) Many people feel Pensions are a very complicated subject - and the welfare.ie website has so much information it can be a bit daunting. The information in the table has been taken from that website but condensed down from 10 pages to a short synopsis.
There are now 6 bands as opposed to 4 and at the lower end of the Yearly Average Contributions the Pension has been reduced considerably. The difference between a yearly average of 14 or 15 is a whopping 58 per week or 3016 per year. It is so very important to check that all of your contributions and credits are recorded. If you are over 60 the Pensions Services Office can send you a ‘Pension’s Forecast Pack’ EU Pensions
If you have worked in Ireland and one or more EU state your social insurance contributions from eachEU state will be added to your Irish Social Insurance Contributions to help you qualify for a social welfarepayment.
Pre-1953 Contributions
It is important to check if you paid contributions prior to 1953 as every 2 contributions paid before1953 count as 3 but you must also have at least 260 full contributions. Average number contributions per year This is probably the most complex aspect of qualifying for a State Pension (Contributory). This is where the PENSION HEALTH CHECK can put your mind at ease. From April 2012 late claims for contributory pensions can be backdated for a MAXIMUM of 6 months so it is very important to apply in time, at least 3 months in advance and if you have paid social insurance in another country apply 6 months before reaching 66. In particular the PENSION HEALTH CHECK is very important for people
who have worked for many employers.Check out the welfare.ie website and if you feel you need some help to get your contribution record and satisfy yourself that all is in order please contact me [email protected] Mob 086 3962020
