Adriana Burlacu, commented: “It was a great day and a wonderful experience for them. Some of them are already looking into the procedure of applying for internship with us.”

On top of all of the hard work that the team at the hotel have done to help the local community, team members packed up donated toys for Mia’s Children’s Foundation which they delivered later in the day. At the Children’s Foundation, Team Members played games with the children outside and enjoyed making posters about Earth Day using recycled materials. They then spent the rest of the day talking to the children about the importance of looking after the earth.

Whilst playing fun games that would educate the children about the environment, Adriana presented the organisation with her wedding dress that she donated to the Children’s Foundation. She said “It was so nice to see their happy faces”.

In addition to this, at the end of March, the hotel was the main sponsor of an event called Breakfast with Andrei Rosu & Viitor Plus. The event promoted a healthy lifestyle along with fashion, sport, wellness and the environment

while raising funds for a children’s garden in Poroschia Village where Team Members had earlier volunteered to help plant trees.

On 23rd March, Team Members made a candlelight display saying “60 minutes” in celebration of Earth hour. During earth hour, the lights in the hotel were turned off along with Chef Lam at the hotel preparing a menu with only locally sourced ingredients for a “Bio Dinner” to be served in the candlelight. In addition to this, hotel guests were invited to add 5 RON onto their bill as a donation to Viitor Plus, a charity to help with the forestation of degraded land.

For two weeks at the end of March, the team at Hilton London Olympia turned red to raise money for Comic Relief. A collection tin was in placed in their Costa Coffee outlet throughout the period and on Friday March 15th, the Team Members wore their red noses and took part their our own “Great Olympia Bake off” by baking delicious goodies.

The competition was open to all Team Members and the judging was completely anonymous to ensure fairness to all entries. As you can see from the pictures, there were some great cakes and after much deliberation, the judges chose the wonderful cupcakes by Lori Hoy as the winner.

Once the judging was over the goodies were sold during lunchtime in the staff canteen for all to enjoy. Overall, everyone that got involved had lots of fun and they managed to raised a total of £100 for the charity.

Our inspirational runners

On 21st April, Hilton in the Community Foundation was delighted to cheer on no less than seventeen intrepid Marathon runners who ran a gruelling 26 miles through London in support of HCF and our local charity partners The Outward Bound Trust and Livability.

The results of months of hard work and training paid off as our amazing runners crossed the finishing line of the Virgin London Marathon in style – complete with sunglasses, tutus and orange running vests. The teams had superb encouragement from family, friends and Hilton team members who came from Chester, Dartford Bridge, Swindon, and from all over the country to offer their support.

Andy Potter had this to say about the Marathon: “I knew it would be an experience, but it’s actually a whole bundle of experiences – elation, exhaustion and everything in between. Amazing crowds, amazing fundraising from all involved, a personal goal achieved, and a special thanks to those who supported me. As far as being competitive is concerned, I think I was beaten by a Rhino but I definitely stayed ahead of Sonic the Hedgehog.”

Chris Ogle from Maple Court ran using HCF’s Silver Bond place. Nicola Young (Hilton Swindon), Russell Day (Hilton London Wembley), Dan Tornbom (Hilton Watford) and Chris Jefferson (Hilton London Heathrow Airport) ran for the

Outward Bound Trust. Andy Potter (Maple Court), Rachel Coriam, Robyn Wainwright and Scott Davies (DoubleTree by Hilton Chester), George Booker (Hilton Dartford Bridge), Coleen Kenny and Magali Kakou (DoubleTree by Hilton Tower of London), Hannah Valentine, Scott Tait and Natasha King (DoubleTree by Hilton Dunblane Hydro), Aniekan Akpan (Hilton London Docklands) and David Clark (on behalf of Hilton Waldorf) all ran for Livability.

The HCF team were very pleased to offer our runners and their supporters a well-deserved drink afterwards at The Trafalgar (and even more impressed that they had the energy!) and our thanks go to the staff at Rockwell Bar for being so welcoming to our runners. It was a fantastic day and we were so proud to share it with them.

This year, our partner charities were The Outward Bound Trust and Livability, Outward Bound aims to help young people realise their potential through outdoor learning. By creating a supporting and challenging environment, young people can learn about themselves and see clearly, perhaps for the first time, what they might truly be capable of achieving in life. Livability is the UK’s largest Christian disabled charity and works with churches and local communities to offer practical support to disabled and disadvantaged young people, empowering them to take fulfil their potential and take active choices in how to live their lives.

Never one to rest on their laurels, George Booker and Chris Ogle are already discussing next year’s race! And HCF has a feeling this isn’t the last we will be hearing from DoubleTree by Hilton Chester, either. Places for next year’s marathon are already available so please email us on [email protected]

Hilton Malta helps the community

In the past six months Hilton Malta has organised many events to help the local community. This included the Front Office Supervisors and Managers got together for a challenge to start-up and operate a business in 36 hours with the aim to maximise profit. One Team Member posed as an investor giving €300 as start up money for this business which as an exercise was designed as a team building activity to develop communication, team work and business skills. During this activity, the team developed a CSR concept for a charitable organisation. The team put in all their efforts and they raised €3,661.50 for Inspire Malta, an organisation that helps over 1,000 children and adults with learning and physical disabilities across their five centres in Malta and Gozo.

Additionally, at the end of last year, The Sports & Social Committee, the Hilton Hearts Committee and the Blue Energy Committee joined forces to organise the yearly Christmas event for children. A children’s Christmas party was organised for Puttinu Cares, which is a cancer support group that offers a holistic approach of care for families who have children suffering from cancer. 200 children, together with their families, were invited to the Hilton Malta for a great party.

Not to be out done, the Hilton Malta pastry team supported a baby day care centre – Kids’ Palace, which is located in Kibera, Kenya – the second largest slum in Africa. The chefs gave two days from their own time to prepare over 600 figolli, a traditional Easter Maltese Sweet. The figolli were sold to raise funds towards this project.

And finally, LivingWell Team Members walked the Pink Road from Floriana to Sliema to raise awareness of breast cancer. The walk was organised by EUROPA DONNA Malta.

Collecting caps to help families in needDuring the year, the entire Hilton Vienna Danube Team collects caps from PET bottles to sell them to a recycling company for the benefit of charity. This company produces a granulate from these recycled caps which results in €330 being donated per ton to families with seriously ill children, to help fund specialised therapies, remedies, badly needed operations and stays in hospitals.

By collecting each and every cap (some of the Team Members also collect caps at home and bring them to work) the team are continuously able to support children and their families in need.

Team Members from Hilton Vienna Danube collected bottle caps to help raise funds for an organisation that supports families with seriously ill children.

Hilton Cologne received new supertoppers for all of their beds and while changing them to the new ones, Kathrin, the hotel’s executive housekeeper ensured that the old ones were cleaned and packed so that they could be donated to charity.

Thanks to this planning and going the extra mile, the team were able to donate 20 boxes of mattress supertoppers to the Cologne Red Cross. By working closely with their IT-provider PSAV, the donation was also

delivered free of charge.

Sacha Kazmiercazak, Front Office Manager and Foundation Champion, commented on the donation:

“A special thank-you to all involved especially Sarah, PA to General Manager, Oliver from PSAV as well as Kathrin and our housekeeping team”.

Team Members from Hilton Cologne were proud of the amount of donations they were able to collect as it will be of great use to the Red Cross.

As a result of our Small Change Big Difference campaign Hilton in the Community Foundation awarded The Children’s Society with a grant of £28,500 to the Children’s Society to help fund the Secret Jungle project in Margate.

The Secret Jungle is a walled garden designed around the needs and wishes of disabled children. It offers children of any disability the opportunity to enjoy a stimulating and fun environment, with a sensory garden, play equipment and a picnic area. Parents are able to use the garden to relax whilst their children play in a safe area. In addition to this, the garden is also open to non-disabled children and

their families, promoting inclusion within the local community.

On April 10th, Katie Horton and Melissa Brown from Hilton Maidstone attended the opening of the new playground and took a tour of the play area and Care Suite, which HCF funded ensuring that disabled children and their families can make use of changing facilities with the garden.

The suite includes a changing bench, toilet facilities, hoist and rails and non-slip flooring, totally meeting the needs of the children. The Care Suite will enable families to come to the garden from further away and enjoy the play area for longer and it

is expected that over 1,500 children will benefit from the garden and the care suite every year.

Anne Rayment, Programme Manager at our The Children’s Society in Kent programme, said:

“The Care Suite that HCF has helped to fund has transformed the Secret Jungle. The changing facilities that it provides, affords children and young people of all abilities the opportunity to get on with what’s important - playing outdoors!”

Hilton Prague’s Easter brunchBecause ‘doing good’ and ‘having fun’ goes together at Hilton Prague so in cooperation with Diamond club, Team Members organised an Easter Brunch at CzecHouse Grill & Rotisserie restaurant with an entertainment programme for children and their parents to spend quality time together. Children could relish a large variety of dishes from the Easter buffet and could have their faces painted, have henna tattoos and play on the tombola.

The event also supported children from disadvantaged backgrounds,

with five children from the Children’s Social Care Service attending the event. The organisation ensures that Children live in a secure, stable and safe environment. The lunch put huge smiles on the children’s faces and unsurprisingly, the most popular dessert amongst them was ice cream. The children returned to the Children’s Social Care House very pleased, having really enjoyed the lunch. In addition to attending the event, the children were given a giant Chocolate Easter egg to share.

The Easter brunch was also a great opportunity to raise funds for the Children´s Hospital Department of Haematology from Ceske Budejovice. Jiri Madl, an ambassador for the charity and also a well known actor in the Czech Republic, attended the event to help fundraise. The hotel raised almost €500, which will really help the organisation.

The Children’s masquerade ball had pleanty of activities for children to enjoy with their parents, with many children joining in with the performances and many attended the ball wearing their favourite fancy dress costumes.

May 2013 12www.hilton-foundation.org.uk

In January, Hilton Mainz supported the Children’s Masquerade Ball, which took place at the neighbouring convention centre. The event is held annually by Mainz Carnival Club (MCV), an organisation that holds special events for children. This particular event was held for children that have cancer and the entire hotel team got behind the event in all aspects of the planning and organising of the ball to ensure that all of the children had a day to remember.

With 3,000 children attending the ball, they enjoyed children’s theatre, make-up stations, a cinema corner, soccer, a carousel and a reading corner. In addition to this, the children also experienced a range of treats with a main buffet set up and different food stations for ice-cream and popcorn as well as old fashioned hawkers going around with sweets to hand out to the children.

The team received a thank you letter from MCV expressing their gratitude for the hotel’s great support: “Once again we had a lot of fun seeing the children get involved and participate in all of the fun activities. I speak on behalf of all of the families that attended when I say thank you very much for your brilliant hospitality. The MCV- Children’s Masquerade Ball is always a big highlight for families whose lives have been changed by cancer diagnosis. This event gives families a few hours to relax, recharge and have fun!”

Over Easter, The team at Hilton London Heathrow Terminal 5 really got into the spirit of helping the local community. The hotel came up with many different ideas including visiting children at the local primary school, which has children aged 3 years to 11 years old. Easter, chocolate and the Easter bunny equals a very exciting time. With this in mind Team Members decided to get their very own Easter bunny to visit the school with Easter eggs for every child. The children were so excited with the Easter bunny’s visit and they sat quietly waiting for their turn to receive the chocolate. Well done to Marcin – the fantastic Easter bunny, who brightened the day for over 200 children.

In addition to visiting the local primary school, Six children from the same school joined Team Members in the kitchen for a fun filled afternoon of decorating Easter eggs to take home to their families. The chef organised large chocolate eggs, sprinkles, sweets and other treats to stick on the eggs. The children had lots of fun and were able to eat chocolate throughout their cooking lesson. At the end of their cooking lesson, they packed their Easter eggs into presentation boxes to take home to their families.

The hotel’s final Easter treat was a raffle that was organised by the HR team. They filled a huge Easter hamper with Creme Eggs, Malteaser bunnies, Lindt chocolate bunnies and sold raffle tickets in different departments for £2 a ticket or 3 tickets for £5 and raised around £75 for HCF and Comic Relief. The lucky winner enjoyed watching his daughter with all the delicious chocolate on Easter Sunday.

And finally, on Valentine’s Day, one of the hotel’s Team Members held a bake for a charity very close to her heart, Aching Arms, a charity that provides support to bereaved mothers. At Hilton London Heathrow Terminal 5, people love a bake sale and it always puts a smile on everyone’s face when they visit a canteen full of cakes. This year 14 cakes were donated, raising a remarkable £125.

Comic Relief in the UK is a huge charity event with the mission to free the world from poverty. The team at Hilton London Heathrow Terminal 5 held a number of events for Comic Relief this year but the “Gunge a HOD” event was by far most popular. Each employee was given the opportunity to donate money against their chosen HOD to be gunged. The gunge consisted of custard and jelly and the chosen HOD was gunged in front of the whole hotel at the hotel communications meeting. Alex Mosquito, Hotel Manager, was the unlucky HOD to get gunged. This raised over £300 for Comic Relief. Well done to Alex for being such a good sport for a great cause. Thank you to all the team for their support in raising money and the HOD and Executive Team for willing to get gunged for charity.

Top left: Lots of people turned up to bid on the items that were available in the auction. Bottom left: Items that were donated for the auction.

Following the last year’s success, Hilton Prague Old Town organised another charity auction in cooperation with the Foundation Divoké Husy or “Wild Goose Foundation” on 18th April 2013. The Wild Goose Foundation provides support to smaller charities in the social and healthcare sectors. The Foundation organised an interesting programme of events and the hotel contributed by providing space and refreshment free of charge.

The auction catalogue was full of valuable personal things given by Czech celebrities such as a puppet from actor Janenský, a photograph from a famous photographer Robert Vano, photo-canvas from Ondej Kepka and 55 more interesting articles. Many known Czech people were present during the auction, including Hanka Kynychová as the moderator, Gabriela Vránová, Nela Boudová, Renata Drossler and Martha Elefteriadu.

The auctioneer Pavel Andêl created a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, one of the highest prices was paid for a shirt from the Czech entertainer Vladimír Hron, who personally promised that he would wear it later on if it was sold for a high amount. The General Manager Luca Crocco also supported the auction and won a nerve-wracking bidding war for a valuable piece of artwork. Altogether they raised 87,750 CZK (approx. 3,500 Eur) during this evening, which exceeds last year’s sum by more than 1,000 Eur.

Funds raised from this auction will be divided between the Wild Goose Foundation and Dejme dětem šanci, which supports children during their last years in foster homes, helping them to develope more independent lives.

Delivering Easter gifts for ill children

The Hilton Bath City Blue Energy team outside the hospital ready to give children their Easter eggs and treats.

To make sure that children at the local hospital could still celebrate a happy Easter, a group of volunteers from Hilton Bath City visited a children’s ward and personally delivered Easter eggs to all of the children. To make the experience even more magical, hotel staff donated money so that the volunteers could hire an Easter Bunny costume for one of the volunteers, George Howe. It was a lovely surprise for the children who really enjoyed the treats and a visit from the Easter Bunny, which made the visit extra special.

Football and treats raise funds for HCF

The winning team, Jackson 6, with their trophies.

In addition to this, Ashley Moreton, Co-ordinator of Architecture and Construction for Hilton Worldwide, organised an indoor football tournament for HCF in Watford. The competition went really well and they raised £160 for the Foundation.

The winning team was called ‘The Jackson 6’ who won the final 8-0.

The team at the Hilton Worldwide International offices at Maple Court continued their fundraising by coming up with a fun way to raise money for the Foundation. With a large chocolate Easter Bunny, staff had the chance to guess the bunny’s name in order to win it. There was 100 possible names that people could choose and it completely sold out.

There was also a competition of guessing how many Easter Eggs are in the jar, which was also very popular amongst staff, with the winning number being 374 and the prize was jointly won by Marie-Laure Metziger and Fran Barham.

Well done to the Maple Court team who were able to raise £153.15 from these two competitions.Staff were invited to guess how many eggs were

in the jar for a chance to win them all.

Helping children in hospitalIn the middle of April, Team Members from Hilton Garden Inn Aberdeen City Centre presented a cheque to the ARCHIE Foundation for £1,053.38 raised from fundraising in 2012. Most of the money was raised from a group of Team Members embarking on an exciting, but tiring journey - cycling 60 miles from their hotel to Hilton Craigendarroch. The ARCHIE Foundation is the official charity for the Aberdeen Royal Children’s Hospital and the Raigmore Children’s Ward in Inverness. It raises funds for toys, activities and complementary therapies not funded by the NHS.

The team in LivingWell at Hilton Bristol found a use for lots of their bath robes that were in great condition but the hotel no longer needed. By selling them to friends and family, the team were able to raise funds for their charity partner, The Jessie May Trust. Jessie May is a children’s charity that helps children with life limiting illnesses and their families get the support they need at home.

Muffins and mattress coversIn celebration of Easter, Hilton London Kensington organised a delicious cake and treat sale in order to raise funds for HCF.

Amie Patel, Human Resources Manager said: “A big thank you to you all that purchased our delicious muffins, cornflake clusters and coffee. I am delight to announce that we raised £64.25!!”

In addition, after receive new mattress toppers, Team Members decided to donate the old ones to The Shepherd’s Bush Housing Association for use by homeless and vulnerable families.

Team Members from Hilton Florence Metropole worked with Banco Alimentare Toscana, a not-for-profit food bank that collects long term surplus food and then redistributes it to charitable organisations. Team members donated food and also volunteered at the organisation by helping to sort food that had been donated, and pack hampers of food that needed to be sent to other charities.

Spreading light at EasterIn Greece there is an Easter religious custom that on the night of the resurrection everyone holds candles. These Greek Easter candles are called “labathes” and are often decorated and given to children by their Godparents.

The Blue Energy Committee of Hilton Athens invited all of the hotel team members to participate in a Candle Decoration Workshop. The Easter candles were then sold to Hilton Athens team members and the amount raised was donated to The Smile of the Child, a not-for-profit voluntary organisation that works to defend the rights of children.

For Easter, Team members a Hilton London Syon park donated a collection of Easter Eggs for their charity partner Shooting Star CHASE, a hospice for terminally ill children. As an extra treat, the eggs were personally delivered to them on Easter Sunday by the Easter bunny.

Supporting new familiesThis month, Angela Hale and Mike Underwood from Hilton Watford, visited Homestart, a charity that supports parents of young children as they learn to cope, improve their confidence and build better lives for their children. They were able to present the charity with a cheque for £189. The money is going to be used on their annual trip to provide packed lunches for the children. The hotel has donated a further £8.389 to local youth causes thanks to their 2012 fundraising.

Helping life-saving servicesLeft:Team members present the WNAA with a cheque for money they raised during 2013 AWD (right)

The Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance (WNAA) was supported by Hilton Birmingham Metropole when Gemma Scott, Simon Cooke and Gemma Butterworth visited the base to meet the pilots, see the helicopters and hand over a cheque for £4,242 following the hotel’s fundraising success in the 2012 Around the World in a Day event.

Flying out of Coventry Airport, the WNAA attends an average of three rescue missions every single day at a cost of £1,400 per mission. The donation from Hilton Birmingham Metropole will contribute to the costs of a Great Ormond Street ‘shuttle’ and ‘baby pod’ which will ensure that children and infants will be transported seccurely, safely and comfortably on route to the hospital.

Gemma Scott, Food and Beverage Trainer, who handed over the cheque to the WNAA said: “After visiting the WNAA, it was great to see how much of an impact our support will make.”

Going around the world to help othersTeam Members from DoubleTree by Hilton Aberdeen City Centre generously donated £1,476 to local children’s charity CLAN House & Haven. They had raised the money after their very successful Around the World in a Day fundraising event. The money will make a significant impact to the charity which provides support to children and young people affected by terminal illnesses.

The Care committee at DoubleTree by Hilton Aberdeen City Centre commented on how it felt to be helping out such a great cause:

“We here at the DoubleTree by Hilton, Aberdeen Care Committee feel very privileged that we have been able to help support CLAN in the fantastic work they do with children and their families. We hope we can make an even bigger contribution this year as it’s their 30th anniversary and it would be a fantastic feeling for us to be part of that.”

This year, team members at Hilton Reading decided to use their creative skills to decorate eggs for Easter and raise funds for HCF at the same time. Here are just a few of the submissions.

Walking for a great causeOn Sunday 7th April Team members from Hilton Molino Stucky Venice took part in an unmissable annual event in Venice: “SU E ZO PER I PONTI” (Up and Down the Bridges). A 12 km walk around Venice, crossing 48 bridges and going off the beaten track to discover hidden beauties of the city.

All the money raised from the event was donated to the Salesian Mission of Gambella in Ethiopia, which builds and runs schools and a training center that benefits more than 1500 people. Team members couldn’t miss this opportunity to help build a Bright Blue Future for so many young people. 30 Team Members of the hotel accepted the challenge and together they set off at a good pace. Some slowed down and enjoyed a pleasant stroll in the sun, while others crossed the finish line in very good time. Everyone got to the finish line at their own pace, and enjoyed the lovely sunny day. The team were awarded with a commemorative plate for their participation, which takes pride of place in the Charity display case.

Eggciting timesTeam Members at Hilton Reading got creative to raise funds for HCF over Easter. The hotel organised a “Decorate your Egg” competition which saw some very impressive designs from entrants which included an Angry Birds themed egg, a princess egg and finally a giant rabbit display holding two very scared eggs.

In addition to this, the hotel also organised a “Guess Your Time” competition which saw Team Members attempt to guess they time that the hotel’s HR representative would complete a half marathon. The team was able to raise £70.16 for HCF.

Reaching young people in needIn October 2012, Hilton Copenhagen Airport held a Gala Dinner for LittleBigHelp, a Danish aid charity focused on helping street children in Kolkata, India. DKK 675,000 was raised, equating to just under £75,000. This funding will help LittleBigHelp to run its school in Salimar slum community where 135 children receive education and receive a daily hot, nutritious meal. Our grant will also help the Day Protection Centre at Howrah Station for 20 boys who are living on the street and on the platforms of the station. The everyday lives of these young boys consist of collecting bottles and other goods left on the trains to sell and earn a few rupees to survive. Above: Boys in the Salimar slum receive education from LittleBigHelp

Case Study: Rohit, 10Rohit is one of thousands of children in Calcutta living in or around Howrah Station, one of the biggest stations in India. The children come to the station after being kicked out of their own homes or escaping due to domestic violence, fear or poverty. They live on the platforms without any healthcare, shelter or legal rights, and are often subjected to violence. In order to survive, the boys spend their days searching the platforms for plastic bottles or other goods that they can sell in return for rupees. Many of them get addicted to substances, such as sniffing glue, to get them through the tough times and to forget about their hunger.

The Day Protection Centre, set up and run by LittleBigHelp, helps boys just like Rohit who lives in the station, to give them a better quality of life. The team talk to the boys living on the platforms and inform them about the centre. The boys are given shelter, food, protection, informal education and the opportunity to just be a child, something that they often do not have the chance to do. They are offered counselling and are put in contact with a rehabilitation centre if they are addicted to drugs. LittleBigHelp also aims to reintegrate the children with their families if it is feasible, and in 2012 52 home placements were achieved.

With the help of LittleBigHelp’s team, Rohit and many other boys who saw a life of homelessness in Howrah Stations are given opportunities of a better future. In May 2013, LittleBigHelp will be opening a 24-hour shelter for the boys at the station, an orphanage for 45 boys where some of these boys can live, and next year LittleBigHelp will open a shelter for girls and an orphanage for them to live safely and away from the street life.

Rohit says: “I like the Day Protection Centre because when I was sick I received care and love from LittleBigHelp people. I have seen many children take service from them and they have become like family”.

The winter has been long and cold for many of us and it’s easy to forget about people that are less fortunate than ourselves. For homeless people in Dresden, there is the homeless night café and Dresdner Tafel. Both of these organisations are dependent on the help from companies, institutions and the generosity of individuals.

The homeless-night café is an institution for people in extreme life situations. It offers a warm meal and a place to stay during the night for up to 25 visitors. There, you can have drinks, food and the chance to socialize with others and it is open between 8 pm and 7 am in the winter months November to March. To support the night café, Hilton Dresden provided 20 portions of hot meals every Wednesday of the month of January 2013.

In addition to this, Team Members from Hilton Dresden helped Dresdner Tafel by donating cushions and blankets to help make winter a little bit warmer for the homeles families that the charity supports.

Rising to the the ‘nourish me’ challengeSeveral events have taken place recently at Hilton Leeds City to celebrate the Nourish Me Challenge. It kicked off with a Blue Energy Tex Mex meal on 23 January. The Blue Energy team decorated the Staff Canteen and created a library for all staff to benefit from on 3 February, held a Pancake Day offering pancakes for sale to guests to benefit Hilton in the Community Foundation and locally nominated charities.

The Blue Energy Team also played host to Bankside Primary School whereupon a couple of hours were spent with a Hotel Showround along with a Housekeeping demonstration and cupcake decorating for each child. Blue Energy Certificates and goodie bags were handed to each child from the Chef and the Housekeeping department.

The Nourish Me Challenge was also wrapped up with a Blue Energy

Chinese Takeaway Staff Lunch which took place on 26 March. Each team member paid £1 to dine and this raised £54 for Hilton in the Community Foundation.

Life-saving donationsTeam Members from Conrad Algarve, Hilton Vilamoura and their friends and family took some time out of their day to donate blood.

After a successful blood donation initiative in the past, Conrad Algarve and Hilton Vilamoura decided to join forces again for a second blood donation drive.

On April 3rd, Approximately 50 people consisting of team members from the two hotels and their friends, families and locals joined in for the selfless act of donating blood to help others in need. The event also served to publicise the need to collect bone marrow donations too, which hospitals are always seeking.

Begona Campoy, Cluster Director of Human Resources Algarve and Foundation Champion, spoke of how great it was to get involved:

“All in all it was a tremendous event thanks to all the heroes that we have on our team and that on that day they we able to ‘give the gift of life.”

After the success of this blood donation event, Team Members are already preparing to organise a third, which should be held later in the year. Donating blood saves lives, so they would like to invite everyone to do the same and donate at a local blood bank.

Team Members from HIlton Innsbruck were happy to see a difference they had made.

A belated Christmas giftA lot of children were surprised when Team Members from Hilton Innsbruck acted as “belated Santa Claus”, and presented them with toys they had collected during the first quarter of this year. The kitchen team baked them a big plate of delicious chocolate brownies. The donations were given to a kindergarten in Innsbruck for immigrant children, children from poor families and children of single parents.

The speechless look in their wide and astonished eyes paid off for every minute that was used to collect those gifts. In return the children sang their favourite songs to say thank-you.

Creating opportunities In collaboration with Pinardi, a Federation of Social Platforms in the US Embassy in Madrid, Hilton Madrid Airport launched Hilton Hopes for the second time in order to provide participants with Hilton training.

At the end of February, the hotel chose 8 young people to receive training in different parts of the hotel. After an extensive selection process, the young people have been given the opportunity to gain experience in the hospitality industry, and hopefully they discover a passion for the sector.

Bake-offs for brighter futuresThis month we’ve seen a trend of delicious cakes and treats from home being brought in and sold to raise funds for the Foundation. Hilton Milton Keynes has also followed suit, but raised the bar with the quality of cakes. Team Members hit the cook books to find the finest cake recipes they have and brought in their best home-made cakes to enter into a cake competition. After the competition, the cakes were sliced and sold to fellow staff raising over £250. Ermal Cani the Head Chef at the hotel was very impressed with all of the entrant’s cakes and said:

“all the staff did a great job.”

The money raised from this event will fund a group of young volunteers from Reachin’ Higher who are travelling to Bolivia to work with young people on the streets of Cochabamba.

The crowd were engaged by the host, “KG Tha Comedian” and also enjoyed listening to singers, rappers and spoken words artists that performed covers and original material, which was accompanied by acoustic guitar playing. “KG Tha Comedian” hosted the evening

Helping children and young people to reach their goalsAfter a year of successful fundraising, Amir Butt, Payroll Manager and Foundation Champion at London Hilton on Park Lane, visited Body and Soul to present them with a cheque for £2,501. Body and Soul is a charity that is dedicated to transforming the lives of children and young people living with, or affected by, HIV.

The funds will be used by the charity to help more children and young people through their Launch Pad service. The Launch Pad helps children to take control of their future by helping them with their school or college work. In addition to this, Launch Pad helps young people to develop and learn skills that will be beneficial to them in work and educational settings. Team Members also visited the shelter and spent the afternoon with homeless families and children, making Easter baskets, colouring eggs and giving the parents coffee and cake.

In addition to this, Hilton Berlin also donated kitchen equipment, napkins and tablecloths that they no longer needed, to a local youth centre. Nachbarschafts and Familienzentrum Finchleystraße were really grateful for the donations and Hilton Berlin hopes to work more with the youth centre in the future.

In March, Hilton Frankfurt hosted their 13th second hand benefit bazaar in support of Deutsche Kinderschutzbund Frankfurt e.V, which aims to fight child poverty. The bazaar took place in the hotel’s ballroom and team members donated clothes that they no longer wanted to be sold in order to raise funds for the charity. The sale raised €2,950 with 100% of the funds being used by the charity for their therapeutic programme “strong parents, strong children” where children suffering from violence in their families are taken care of professionally.

In addition to this, Hilton Frankfurt also collected food for the Frankfurt Food Bank. Many Team Members got involved and generously donated tins of soup, coffee, tea, noodles. Enough food was donated to fill three large boxes. As the initiative was so successful last year, Team Members at Hilton Frankfurt decided to make this a reoccurrence.

On April 3rd, Team Members from Hilton Frankfurt welcomed a group of boys aged between 8 and 11 year from Hermann-Luppe-Haus, a local charity that provides support to children with learning difficulties. The Team organised a paper chase through the hotel and it was a real adventure for the children to explore and discover the hotel – especially the back of house area. The children were also given a tour of the hotel and stopped by at the Presidential Suite where there was a rubber duck treasure hunt. The children really enjoyed the day and it was topped off with some sweets for them to enjoy.

During March, Hilton Tel Aviv’s management and team members donated hundreds of food packages to families in need in order to help them celebrate Passover. Tal Schneider, Assistant HR Manager said:

“Well done to all of the Team Members involved who worked with other hotels in the area in order to maximize the contribution to the community.”

Taking inspiration from the TV show The Apprentice, DoubleTree by Hilton Cambridge came up with a creative way to raise funds by organising an Entrepreneur Challenge.

The challenge consists of £5 being given to each department within the hotel. The members of these departments then have to go away and try to make as much money out of the £5 as they can in the next two months.

Being such a challenging task, departments got creative and competitive with different ideas including selling tea and coffee, guessing how many eggs are in a jar, a raffle and finally, Team Members being given the chance to vote for who they would most like to see jump into the river whilst wearing fancy dress.

The funds raised from the challenge will be donated through HCF to Blue Smile, a local charity that works with disadvantaged children to prevent anti-social behaviour and mental illness. Good luck to all the teams.

Team Members at Cambridge are coming up with their own business ideas to support charity.

Supporting the community in IcelandFrom the 22nd to the 26th of April 2013 The Blue Energy Committee at the Hilton Reykjavik Nordica Iceland has been collecting clothes that they can donate to the Icelandic Red Cross to help the community in Iceland.

Team Members at the hotel are hoping to gather around more than 100 KG (220 lb) or more of used clothes from our staff and their families.

In the Red Cross Iceland there are over 450 proud volunteers from all over the country helping out less fortunate families and make a difference in their lives among other projects they do for the community.

The hotel has also recently placed its first Ducks for change order which will raise money for local causes in Iceland.

Local funds for local childrenThe team at Hilton Cobham worked hard during 2012 to raise £7,232.31 for the Foundation. As well as supporting HCF’s central grant fund, has been used to support a range of local causes: Jigsaw School, Anna’s Challenges, The Surrey Care Trust, 1st Byfleet Scout Group and Peterson’s Fund for Children.

Peterson’s Fund for Children is based in Walton-on-Thames and serves families across the county of Surrey. The charity received a sponsored grant of £500 to help it deliver speech and physical therapy for children with a range of disabilities. Pictured, Maia is one child helped by this service.

The recommendation to support Peterson’s Fund came through a team member at Hilton Cobham, whose daughter attends dance classes with Maia.

Helping young people to learnOn 23 April, General Manager Sam Farmer and Patricia Maggs from Hilton Newbury Centre attended the official opening of Murray House, a new residential accommodation facility at the Mary Hare School for deaf children and young people.

HCF had awarded the school a central grant of £8,547 in 2012, to enable the purchase and fitting of 37 desks and chairs in study-bedrooms used by the young people. The school as a whole has around 230 pupils and offers specialist teaching methods to enable young people who are deaf to fulfil their potential, learn to live independently and excel academically.

Sam said: “I met the headmaster, who remembered us from our previous grant. We were shown the tables and chairs we bought, and it was really nice to see us mentioned on the plaque as you enter the building thanking us for our support. But the highlight was meeting Pippa, who is now an ambassador for Mary Hare!”

As part of Hilton Careers Month, hotels across the region hosted visits from young people, to inform them and inspire them about jobs in the hospitality industry.

Hilton Milan invited 15 girls and boys aged 15-17 from a local orphanage to come to the hotel and learn about the different careers that Hilton Hotels & Resorts can offer. Some of them already knew that they would like to work in hospitality and throughout the day, as other became more aware of the opportunities, they too became increasingly interested.

Later on in the day, the young people were divided up into teams where they were able to learn more about different jobs within the hotel. They particularly enjoy “The perfect waiter” game where they had to race with a tray that was full of glasses while having to avoid three tables. Another activity that really helped the young people was the “English really counts” activity where they would have to translate Italian phrases into English. Other useful activities included showing the young people how to write effective CVs and how to dress for job interviews. The event wrapped up with a tour of the hotel and a buffet with drinks and tasty snacks.

Jolanda Kappa, Foundation Champion and General Manager’s Assistant, said

“They really had a lot of fun and got something out of the event at the same time.”

In The Netherlands, Hilton Amsterdam also hosted a National Careers event,

attended by 400 young people. Desi Janson said: “The day was a great success and with this stand we have informed our potential new Team Members about the Hilton in the Community Foundation and Bright Blue Futures”

On 15 March, Hilton Cyprus hosted its annual Gala Dinner in partnership with the Round Table. This was held to raise funds for Children with Liver Diseases.

Maria Christodoulou, Executive Housekeeper and Champion at the hotel, reported that the event was very successful and looks to have raised approximately €3,000. The funds raised will help towards establishing a unit at the Nicosia hospital for children with liver diseases.

According to the Children’s Liver Disease Foundation, the signs and symptoms of liver disease can vary greatly from child to child and between the 100 different liver diseases which can affect children. This is one reason liver disease can be hard to diagnose. Symptoms can include abdominal pain, ascites (abdominal swelling caused by an enlarged liver or excess fluid in the abdomen), jaundice, itching and nausea. At the time of referral, testing and diagnosis, children and their families can experience an uncertain and worrying time. Treatments and therapies may include lifestyle changes, medications, endoscopy and surgery.

The Gala Dinner took place just the night before the current difficult economic events for the country were reported.

Maria said: “Now more than ever the small charities will need our help to get over the difficult situation.”

Additionally, thanks to sales of Ducks for Change, a grant of €200 was made to Somation Ellinidon Kyrion “Mana”, which delivers a support programme, including food and education activities for vulnerable children. We are delighted that the Foundation’s activities, supported by the hotels in Cyprus, can continue to help local children and young people in need.
