Many restaurant ownersprovide their service staff

with a "script" to follow whenapproaching customers. "Hello, myname is _____ and I will be yourserver this evening. Can I offer you[an overpriced, sickly sweet]specialty cocktail to start?" Smallerrestaurants have the appeal ofmaking the diner feel like a guest, rather than just another tab/tablenumber. Thai Spring Roll, at thehands of Kumar, runs with theperfect combination of grace, business savvy and respectfulconsideration for the individualcustomer, regardless of pricerange. Many of the dinner entreesare available on the lunch menu, from 11:30am-4pm, come withchoice of soup or a spring roll, andare above and beyond reasonablypriced. The best part is, they arenot half the size of their peak-hourcounterparts, but fill up the platewith the same generous portions asthey would later in the day. Thisrestaurant started out serving greatThai food and will continue to do sofor years to come, especially withthe same wonderful service offeredby the lovely Rachel.

Their signature dish was, ofcourse, the spring rolls, and didn'tdisappoint. They were burstingwith flavour and ingredients, butunlike many I have tried in the past,NOT drowning in grease or over-wrapped with pastry. Colourful, fresh and crisp, the Mango Salad

(with peanut coriander and their alovely house dressing) was arefreshing way to enjoy theunusually warm weather beforediving into the Classic Pad Thai(chicken and shrimp). It was yetanother dish that I would highlyrecommend, which was no surpriseafter the quality of what hadpreceded it. I liked how the greenonions, roasted peanuts andsprounts were placed on top of thehot portion of the dish so theywould retain their unique texturesand allowed the green onions toadd a spash of colour. The chickenwas tender and tasty with freshshrimp and al dentenoodles.Throughout the dish, Icontinued to enjoy the medley oftastes and textures. Singha Thaibeer (bottle), nice and cold, wentnicely with each of the dishes. Thefantastic spring rolls were too goodto stop eating, but I had satisfiedmy hunger long before I ran out offood. I still found myself picking atthe salad in the car on the wayhome, but shared the leftover PadThai with my boyfriend. He loved ittoo. A clean restaurant, withexcellent service, generousportions and reasonable prices, and authentic Pan Asian cuisine,Thai Spring Roll is where to go forThai food in Toronto.

Mayor Candidates

Ford, Rob ([email protected]) Mammoliti,Giorgio ([email protected]) Pantalone, Joe([email protected]) Rossi, Rocco([email protected]) Smitherman, George([email protected]) Thomson, Sarah([email protected])

We sent an e-mail to all of the above.

Only three replied

1) I will make Torontothe best city in theworld by making itthe best-run city inthe world. Right now,the city wastesmoney, doesn'tdeliver on basicservices, and isn'tdoing it's job for thegreat people of thecity. With mybusiness experience,I will turn this cityaround and get itworking again.

2) In my view, Toronto's biggestenvironmental challenge is smogand pollution. The best way toattack those challenges is to fightback against the gridlock that keepspeople stuck in traffic and carsidling. As Mayor, I will expand thesubway system and improve theroads so that gridlock isn't so bad,and we can get thousands of cars offthe road.

3) I believe they way we manage low-income housing today isn't working.I'd like to take some of the budgetfor public housing and put it into rentsubsidies for low-income families. This subsidy will allow them to entersome of the 40,000 vacant rentalunits in the city, and save their hard-earned dollars for important thingslike their family.

4) This is an excellent idea andexactly the kind of thing I would liketo do. As a Councillor for the past 10years, I have a strong track record ofcommunity consultation. Involvingthe community is the best way tocreate solutions that work. If westop wasting money at City Hall, wewill have money left to help engageyoung people especially in activitiesthat allow them to pursue theirinterests in a safe, healthy way whilekeeping them away from gangs andcrime. I will make someannouncements regarding both ofthese ideas later in the campaign.

5) Government should be shaped bypeople who are committed to making

Canada and Toronto thebest place in the worldto live, because theyplan to make theirhomes and raise theirfamilies here. Thesepeople are more thanjust temporaryresidents. They becomecitizens and citizenshave the right to vote. Istrongly encourage allimmigrants who want tomake their lives inCanada to becomecitizens as soon as they

are eligible. Then they will have afull voice in our democracy, including the right to vote. Untilthen, there are many other ways toparticipate in our democracy: byvolunteering to support a candidateor cause they believe in, by donatingif they’re able to do so, and bywriting letters to electedrepresentatives, political parties, and newspapers.

6) The TTC has two major problems. It is poorly-run, and it doesn'tservice enough areas. I plan toexpand the subway system to helpmore Torontonians get where theyneed to go quickly and efficiently. Iwill also improve the customerservice and management of the TTC,as I will with all city departments, because that's what Torontoniansdeserve. I think all Toronto transitriders agree that the TTC has toimprove, and that will be one of mytop priorities as Mayor.

7) Businesses located withinrecognized Business ImprovementAreas are charged a membership“tax” and must belong to the BIAwhether they want to or not. TheBIA’s goals are to improve businessconditions in their areas and thatrequires them to remain on goodterms with local residents. So, I’mnot sure it’s necessary to force themto have a homeowner’srepresentative on their boards, nor atenant’s representative.

Mayor : Local St James Town Youth ask the Candidates Tough Questions Wendy StewartCampaign ManagerSarah Thomson for Mayor

1. I will reduce the debt by selling offassets that cost the city to upkeep. Iwill streamline operations at city halland reduce spending in order tobalance the books yearly. Once thefinancial situation is in order I willfocus on building an expandedsubways system in Toronto. Areliable efficent subway will attractbusinesses and jobs to our city.

2. An expanded subway system willreduce gridlock and congestion andin turn reduce smog and pollution. As mayor I will work towardsencouraging more environmentalbuilding designs with green andwhite roofs. I believe we mustconserve our older buildings ratherthan tear down as the environmentalfootprint of destroying buildings issignificant.

3. Low income families need jobsand with an efficient transit systemmore businesses and jobs will cometo our city. I will also work to createa portible rental subsidy that willenable low-income families thechoice of where to live enablingthem to live closer to the jobsavailable. By reducing the size ofourgovernment I will be able to putmore funds into child care, summercamps, health and recreationalfacilities.

4. I believe in enabling the non-profitorganizations who form clubs --music, book and arts organizationsfor example -- and want enable themwith free meeting space inmunicipally owned building, many ofwhich sit empty most evenings andweekends. The Toronto Arts councilis doing a terrific job engagingcommunities around the city and bybringing art into parks that havebeen taken over by gangs they haveenabled the neighbourhood to takeback their parks. I want toencourage more of this and increasefunding to the arts council.

5. I believe that the act of becominga Canadian citizen is an extremelyimportant commitment that must bemade by both citizen and country.Canadian citizenship entailsfundamental rights, protection andfreedoms but also an oath ofalligiance to protect and uphold thefundamental values of Canada. Thereason citizens have a right to voteis because they have made an oathto protect and uphold the values thatmake Canada the country it is. Thereason landed immigrants do nothave the right to vote is becausethey have not made a commitment toCanada.

6. Yes I ride the TTC -- best instancewas last week when the gentlemanbehind the counter selling tokensinformed me with a smile that thesubway train was running late. Worstinstance was being stuck on astopped subway for 20 minuteswithout any idea what was going onor why we had stopped.

7. Not sure what the questions is...BIAs stands for BusinessImprovement Assocations.Homeowners associations arecompletely different associations.Businesses vote on BIAs and homeowners vote in Rate Payer (homeowner) Associations. Eachassociation have very different ideasof what makes a safe and vibrantcommunity. Sometimes thehomeowners want to rid theircommunity of businesses withoutrealizing that business ownerscreate extra eyes on the streetsmaking our neighbourhoods andurban streets much safer. I believethat mixed use (mixing business andresidential together in anieghbourhood) creates saferstreets and more vibrantcommunities and should beencouraged in high prioritycommunities. this will bring morejobs to areas of the city that needthem most.

I believe in Civic Engagement, The

Arts and The Environment – Torontois an awesome city full ofcompassion for other people – weneed to build on that and our otherstrengths – like diversity. We trulyare one of the most diverse cities inthe world and we need to keepadding to that and keep it allbeautiful – collectively as apopulation. I am an artist and Ibelieve in ART – 100%.Again, encourage people to clean upafter themselves, stop littering, more bicycle lanes, more PublicTransit, roof top gardens and greenspaces and parks everywhere – wehave a long way too go but it isdoable. We can achieve this.I live in a Co-Op, downtown in St.James Town and I grew up on theCommunity Centre system, freelunch programme and several afterschool free programmes – whichwere great – we need to keepfunding those and never let it betaken away from people who need itmost. Long Live Community Centres!Access to all ages events, drop incentres, programs, group meetingsetc… is very important – youth andyoung people are the future – youneed to be involved. You must beinvolved – it is your future. Use yourvoice to speak out.)Yes. The ballot system must change– absolutely & it will change – slowlybut change is on its way – thankfully!I cannot wait for the day when thesystem changes.I am a 365-day, year round bike rider.I think in 2009 I took the TTC 6 timesin one year. The TTC reallydepresses me. I am lucky that I livedowntown have access to a bicycleand really enjoy riding my bike. TheTTC is important but I am fortunatethat I do not have to rely on it on aregular basis. This is something I really knownothing about. I am not sure what tosay about this. BIA’s are often greatand can be quite powerful inneighbourhoods or be useless.Sorry, I am really not sure what dosay here. But I guess ultimately BIA’sare good for the neighbourhood aslong as people get involved.

Flower arrangements remainon the tables despite a few

wilting petals. The first signs ofspring in mid-march, even daisiesand snap dragons in their finalmoments of life, are far morebeautiful than any artificial flowers. It was still a bit chilly for the patio,so we sat inside. The interior wasclassy and spacious, but still cozy. The long, marble bar is beautiful andis a nice alternative to classic wood.Soft velvety chairs and benches fillout corners, while clean, cushy vinylfurniture make up the remainingseating.

My picky little princess wouldhave nightmares if we tried to feedher something with green olives onit, so we ordered a pepperoni andpineapple pizza for her, and theRoma Deluxe for ourselves. TheRoma Deluxe was packed with twokinds of meat; pepperoni and bacon;and tons of veggies; mushrooms, green olives, green peppers, andonions. Presented on raisedplatforms, the way pizza should beserved, our meals came out pipinghot and smelling fantastic. Theportions of toppings were generous, positioned evenly, and with obviouscare. The crust wasn't too thick ordoughy; crispy without beingovercooked. One thing that reallyimpressed me was how easy thepizza was to eat without making amess- even when Logan turned herslice upside down, the toppingsstayed put. That alone was enoughto convince me that the chef whohad prepared it had done so withboth love and expertise. Far too

many people throw pizzas togetherwith no regard for the end result orfor the burning mess that oftenlands in the lap of countlessembarrassed diners. The taste wasALMOST perfect... I thought it couldhave used a touch more sauce, but itlater occurred to me that notdrowning the pie in sauce mighthave been the reason the first bitelanded in my mouth rather than onmy jeans. A sacrifice for the greatergood is something I can support, especially as the one who is incharge of laundry at my house.

If the great pizza is anyindication, I look forward tochecking out the rest of the menu. There is nothing more indicative ofquality Italian cuisine than theperfect pie. Don't miss my nextreview of Roma, because I could betelling you where to find some of thebest Italian food in Toronto.

MUSIC Blurred Vision" and Flashing Lights

bloornews.com -- collegestreetnews.com - danforthmagazine.com -- printablecanadiancoupons.com - banquetblog.com Page 7

By Melissa Peters

"Blurred Vision" is a musical groupof activists who used a Pink Floydcover to show how clearly they viewrepressive regimes and staidconventions. Their single, HeyAyatollah-leave those kids alone("Another Brick in the Wall" cover)was on a DVD handed to me duringmy Canadian Music Week tour. Thevideo (under the direction ofInternationally Acclaimedfilmmaker Babak Payami) depictsriots, women in traditional Islamiccover-all attire, and a guy whobears an uncanny resemblance toOsama Bin Laden looking through awindow to make sure everyone isbehaving the way he wants them to.By taking an iconic song that givesa powerful voice to the oftenignored masses, "Blurred Vision"has found a way to sneak a littlemore harsh reality into pop culture. It's all well and good to change thefew words of a song and produce avideo to reinforce the idea, butthese guys are offering far more

than a creative hand to the fight fora better world. Visitblurredvisionmusic.com todownload the single on Itunesbecause half of the proceeds fromthe sales will be donated toAmnesty International. Not only is"Blurred Vision" trying to make adifference, but they are making itpossible for all of us to do thesame. The band was featured at HartHouse during Canadian MusicWeek, so I had a chance to checkthem out before knowing what wason the DVD. Their first song, entitled "Organized Insanity"describes my life far too accurately. What an awesome name for a song.

P.O.W was my favorite song of theset though. The influence behind itranged from Pink Floyd toNickelback and the instrumentationand lyrics were very appealing. Many of the songs were the typethat could get stuck in your head-catchy, had you tapping your feet-the makings of future Top-40 hits, but with a point to them. The bandwas great, but the venue wasn'tperfect. It was a nice space, but forabout fifteen minutes, the lightskept going off and on and off andon, like someone was trying tofigure out whether each individuallight looked right. I couldn't see mynotepad one minute and wasblinded a few minutes later andpraying they would just dimeverything a little and just let it go.If it wasn't for the distraction of the"light show" and the headacheresulting from it, I would havestayed to hear more.

During hischildhood, Mitch was affectionatelyknown as "likkle squidly" and heused to perform on stage showsalong with local artists. He wasgrateful for the opportunity toperform amongst the well-knownold school reggae artists like PeterMetro and Squidly Rankin at fouryears of age. It was then that Mitchdecided that he wanted to becomean entertainer like his idols PeterMetro, Lt. Stitchie, Pinchers andPapa San.

He was raised in Mountain Viewuntil age seven where he thenmoved to Harbour View. At the ageof 10, he migrated to Toronto,Canada where he resided with hislate grandmother at Queens Drive.Years have passed and Mitch nowknown as "Richilous/Richkidd" hasevolved into a mature male artistwith various talents which includehis ability to produce, write, rap andsing music using his various rangesof vocals and versatility. MUSIC: The NewsboysFamily is the perfect name for

the upcoming CD; they maynot share a mother or a father, butthey may just be closer and share farmore than brothers who do. Twenty-three years ago, John Wilks and GaryO'Keefe-Wilks (John's mom recentlyinsisted on "adopting" Gary!) foundthemselves sharing a stage for thefirst time. They just clicked andhave since found themselvesgravitating back together bothmusically and as close friends.Although they have been performingtogether far longer, they didn'tcollaborate as songwriters until2003, but haven't stopped since theydiscovered the magical the result oftheir combined creativity.

I had the pleasure of interviewingGary recently, who is a guitarist, bassist, drummer and songwriter. His passion for music is contagious, and the respect and love he has forthe Wilks clan is touching. Music is,and always has been a part of bothJohn's and Gary's lives, so I didn'texactly have to coax material out ofGary about his musical experiences. We were talking about something we

both love, so the conversation justflowed naturally. Gary's dadperformed New Orleans/DixielandJazz when Gary was young, andalthough the music itself intriguedGary, the banjo did not. His fathersfriend, Frank, taught Gary to play thebass well enough to do so with theband by age 11. Mom was a singer, and some of the covers Gary haslearned have been a tribute to hislate mothers musical history. Much of the songwriting between

Gary and John is based on truestories, and about experiences theyhave shared directly, or over a pintafter separate tours. Because theyclick so well in that sense, andbecause they are so close, it's aspecial treat to perform withoutanyone else on stage to distract thetwo Newsboys from one another andtheir music. The songs comestraight from the heart, and theintimacy on stage rekindles theoriginal emotion and thrill of writingthe song, resulting in incrediblechemistry. Gary and John werepleasantly surprised when the ownerof Castro's Lounge (Queen St. E)asked the boys to come and perform

nothing but original work. There is aDocumentary film-maker who wantsto capture the camaraderie betweenthe Gary and Johnny, so this wouldbe the perfect opportunity to do so.The gig will happen as soon as thedirector returns from Nashville, sokeep your ears open for theannouncement. This is oneperformance you won't want to miss.

World Environment Day at St. James Town Festival

In 1973, the UN founded thefirst World Environment Day tospark worldwide interest inenvironmental action. The UnitedNations believes that communitiesare important to change the waypeople think about environmentalissues and that people need to getinvolved in making changes that arefair and sustainable for everyone.

As we celebrate the community ofSt. James Town in our Festival, thisyear’s celebration falls on WorldEnvironment Day, with a focus to oursurrounding environment, and howwe can make things better for ourneighbourhoods and ourselves. Thisis a thought being considered bymany across the City.

Toronto’s big environmental goalis to reduce its greenhouse gasemissions by 80% by 2050. This goalis big because it will require theinvolvement and participation of allTorontonians to achieve. But gettingthere could mean a lot of fun andcommunity-building as we worktogether towards the goal.

When we grow food locally, swapclothing, design our buildings betteror advocate for more accessiblesidewalks, we are showing that weare able to reduce pollution andwaste. 2010 must be the year tothink big, to look around and seewhat we can do to benefit ourneighbourhoods.

Live Green Toronto can help youput your ideas into action with grantsand supportive community animators

who will assist you in greening high-rises and neighbourhoods. Half ofToronto residents are tenants, andmost of them live in high-rises. LiveGreen’s website is full of ideas andhow-to videos showing how toapproach your neighbours andothers about making the changesyou desire. All of this can be foundat: livegreentoronto.ca, calling 3-1-1,or emailing [email protected]

One big idea I have is forcommunity gardens to thrive in everyneighbourhood, with children, adultsand seniors working together to growa variety of vegetables, fruits andnatives plants. Gardens like thesehave been initiated in many parts ofToronto, and provide great sources of

healthy local food for everyone toenjoy. Toronto even has aCommunity Garden Network, whosegoal is to encourage a healthycommunity gardening movement inToronto and support its gardeners toachieve their goals. The Networkalso holds a vision of diversity, because of what can be achieved bygardeners when they work togetherno matter their beliefs, experiencesor backgrounds – and Toronto has abounty of these. Please steal thegarden idea for a piece of land nearyou! You can work with the Networkand Green Living Toronto to getthings started in your area.

2010 is also an election year. It’sthe right time to expect more of ourmunicipal officials and to ask howthey can better serve ourneighbourhoods, such as with properhousing, efficient buildings, healthyfood and vibrant community spaces. It is up to us to show examples andtalk to our representatives andcandidates about what we want, andask for (or demand) the politicalsupport to make things better.

I’m excited about the big things tohappen this year. Let’s take theglobal spirit of World EnvironmentDay and bring it home to Toronto. With the right mix of enthusiasm, wemight all soon get to experiencesome healthier food, cleaner air andbetter housing.

TECh IN CITY: The Land Line is Dead Last month my mother turned

57 and she wanted to learnhow to use a cellphone. I had an oldTelus prepaid phone collecting dustin a gadget box of mine. I gave it toher so she could try it out and see ifit made sense to get a real one. I gotmy sister to make the maiden phonecall and I found her reacting to thecellphone as if it were an alarm clockor a hand grenade. The startled lookas she tried to find it in her purse andthe fumbling with the keys. I held inmy laughter for about a second as Ihit the talk key and shared thehumour with my sister on the otherline.

Two weeks on she’s getting thehang of using a cell phone and mytone goes from laughter to shockwhen I find out how much my motheris paying for a land line. Shenonchalantly says $55 to $75 and myfirst words out of my mouth are“Why?” It seems a landline, caller id,voicemail, long distance and otherlittle fees here and there add up. Idecided to do some research for mymother and ultimately the reader onswitching over to a cellphone forgood!

When I went researching onlinefor pricing I’ve noticed a hugedifference between the bigcompanies like Bell and Rogersversus Public Mobile and Wind thetwo new mobile startups on theblock. When I was surfing Bell orRogers’s websites I felt like I wasbeing flipped on my end and slowlyshaken for money as I clicked eachrespective feature I needed. I alsofelt like a lawyer or mathematician at

times when I was reading the longdistance plans or the terms andconditions that talked about longdistance network fees in Bell’s case.In contrast to the big phonecompanies, the new mobile startupsPublic Mobile and Wind websiteswere easy to navigate and it took onlya minute on each site to get a price.

I think the contrast between thestart-ups and the traditionalcompanies is this little word calledunlimited. It’s easy to navigate priceson their websites because it’s oneprice with a lot less fine print. As aPublic Mobile rep said to me “nomatter how much you talk or text, you’ll always pay the same flat rate. And that means you’ll never besurprised with a bill at the end of themonth.” The rep also mentioned 38percent of Canadians don’t have acell phone because of theseunpredictable and frustrating feesthat Canadians face through these

traditional telephone companies. It’sclear these startups like Wind andPublic are targeting this 38%because it’s a huge untapped marketthat wants wireless withoutattachments.

In my mother’s case thefluctuation of $50-$75 dollars shepays Bell every month is a lot morethan an unlimited plan from eitherPublic or Wind which run $45 to $55respectively. I know Bell will lose atleast one customer to this newpricing model taking Toronto bystorm The mantra for these newcompanies is no contracts, no creditchecks and no surprises becausethey want to turn the market on itshead and cut the land line for good.Time will tell if these slow movinggiants will innovate and make iteasier for consumers tocommunicate or the risk giving uptheir subscribers for good.

EVENTS: Tall Ships Waterfront Fest By Melissa Peters

Redpath Toronto Waterfront FestivalGreat Lakes United Tall ShipsChallenge June 30-July 4, 2010

From the cultural and recreationalactivities to the spectacular Paradeof Sail, opportunities abound for theentire family to enjoy the festival ondry land at no cost, but with the tallships docked along our citieswaterfront, it seems crazy notto actually "whet" the old sealegs while you have the chance. If you can't bear the thought ofleaving our awesome citybehind for even one second, then you can experience thewonders of this historicalinternational fleet right here inour own harbour with decktours. Visitwww.TOwaterfrontfest.com topurchase your boarding passfor as little as $12. If you want toavoid line-ups and get a second, orthird look at the fleet, you can get aSingle or Multi-Day Priority Pass forless than thirty dollars, and if yourkids are under four, they can tagalong for free.

Anchored and still, the vessels areextraordinary, but the real magic isguiding them across the ocean. Thefreedom of the open water is only thebeginning. Every person counts in arace, from manipulating the massiveship, trying to predict what nature isgoing to come up with next, toplanning every pull of the line and therise and fall of the sails. As a crewmember aboard you are constantlyengaged; mind, body and soul while

you compete with powerful water, strong winds and worthy opponents.

What most people don't realize isthat anybody can be a part of thisexhilarating lifestyle, even if it's justfor a week or two. This summer isyour chance to experience ourmajestic Great Lakes on the deck ofa foreign Tall Ship. Not only are

berths on these mighty shipsavailable to the novice orexperienced passenger/sailor, theyare necessary. The benefits to thosewho purchase berths are withoutquestion, but the proceeds of berthsales are the life-blood of the ships, and the only way to preserve thefascinating history of the individualcrafts, and the Tall Ship Sailingindustry as a whole. The German Tall Ship ROALDAMUNDSEN was originally built fordeep sea fishing in 1952, only toservice the military fleet of formerEast Germany. When the Berlin Wallwent down, so did her sails, only torise again in the name of sail-training, at the hands of the LLaSe.V., a German not-for-profit

organization.

From regular crew members to first-time trainees, everybody on deck ispart of the crew, and is introduced toevery aspect of sailing asquarerigger. One can start beforethe mast and, respectinginternational regulations, work theirway up to captain's qualifications for

traditional ships. Theknowledge gained as a crewmember is invaluable, but theROALD AMUNDSEN offersadditional education in thelanguage, history and cultureof Germany. Visitwww.sailtraining.de topurchase a berth or for moreinformation.

The Bark EUROPA, "the shipthat really sails", was

launched in Hamburg in 1911, andbrought to the Netherlands in 1986,where, over 8 years, she wascompletely rebuilt and rigged as athree-masted bark. Famous fornautical miles travelled, she earnedthe nickname, "Ocean Wanderer".The motto on the ship is "anythingyou may, nothing you must." Being amate, or even a captain on a ship hasbeen a dream for many people, andthe EUROPA can make it a reality. For a few weeks each year, she sailsas the training ship for the"Enkhuizen Nautical College", whichtrains people for voyages on bothcoastal and ocean sailing vessels.

In the midst ofmajor road construction, we managed tohold our fifth annual Roncesvalles PolishFestival, which we bill as “Canada’slargest celebration of Polish culture inToronto’s best neighbourhood.” It was awelcome break from the first round ofconstruction, which is now over.

Drawing roughly 175,000 people overtwo days, this was the best edition ofour festival yet! The RoncesvallesVillage Business Improvement Area(BIA), which organizes theRoncesvalles Polish Festival and otherevents in Roncesvalles Village, wonthe coveted “Special Events andPromotions” award at the Ontario BIAAssociation conference, largely on thebasis of the great success of the PolishFestival.

Even though we know that

construction will be starting again onRoncesvalles Avenue in late June2010, we had hoped to be able to worka miracle again, and hold our sixthRoncesvalles Polish Festival.Unfortunately the nature of the

construction in this second and finalround makes holding a major festivalimpossible, so we’ll have to postponethe next edition of the RoncesvallesPolish Festival until September 2011.

But don’t fear! We have lots of otherthings happening on Roncesvalles! OnSaturday June 19 we will be holdingour first annual music and art festivalin Roncesvalles Village. We call itRoncy Rocks! and it features allmanner of great local talent includingNorth of Queen, Ron Leary, NIcoleChristian and the Caravan, Whoa

Nellie!, Derek Weening, and muchmuch more, as well as local artistsdisplaying their work at variouslocations all over Roncesvalles. Then in August Roncylicious returns, our celebration of food culture inRoncesvalles Village, and then join uslate in the year as we celebrate thecompletion of construction onRoncesvalles Avenue and the return ofour beloved streetcars! And please don’t let construction deteryou from visiting our wonderful street. We’ve got three hours free parking inany legal spot on RoncesvallesAvenue, so you can shop and dine toyour heart’s content!

POLITICS: The Unfair 'Politics' of Being a PoliticianElected politicians are

supposed to be representingactual people, are they not? Theaverage person has his or her ownfair share of issues, and tries toavoid making said issues obviousto the outside world. Regardless ofhow far society has come in termsof accepting alternative lifestyles, our leaders are still expected tolive up to some archaic stereotypeof the nuclear family. How exactlyis that representative of theaverage human being? Divorcerates are high, people cheat, marrymore than once, have children outof wedlock, have sex beforemarriage, and play the field for afew years before settling on eventheir first "life" partner. Although18 is considered the legal age ofadulthood, very few people haveeven begun to figure out who theyare and what they want a decadelater.

Adam Giambrone is only 32years old and he has chosen a paththat is filled with responsibility anda life that is under constantscrutiny. He made the leap intopolitics when he was in his earlytwenties, and has proven himselfmore over a few years than manypoliticians do in decades. He hastaken not one, but two majorpositions, and managed to jugglethe many roles that each positiondemands with impressive control, and with wisdom well beyond hisage. He has a fresh outlook, andnew, innovative ideas, and unlikethose who have been discouragedby decades of political red tape andcontroversy, he is filled with hope. And hope is exactly what the city of

Toronto needs right now.

The residents of Toronto havebeen told too many times that thetime and money it would take tobuild a great city just doesn't exist,so they have grown to acceptmediocrity. They don't botherfighting anymore, because they seeno point. They need a leader whois willing to fight on behalf ofToronto, and willing to refuse toback off until the provincial andfederal government bodies give thesupport the city needs anddeserves.

Adam Giambrone was themayoral candidate who was readyand willing to step up on behalf ofToronto, but because he got caughtacting like a young man with a sexdrive, he dropped out of the race.He created the perfect imagebecause he had to, with the nicegirlfriend who lived with him, whohe had been dating for just theright amount of time. It was longenough to justify shacking up, butnot so long that it seemed strangethat the couple had not yetmarried. Unfortunately, Adam'sextra-curricular activities weren'twell thought out. According to oneof the other woman, Mr. Giambronewas playing the loving, loyalboyfriend card in more than onelady's life. It's hard to believe thatthe hidden woman was unawarethat someone whose face issplashed all over the front of theSun and the Star had NO IDEA hewas involved with someone else.More than likely, she waited tocome clean until her story would

have more impact on the youngpoliticians career. He was prettyhigh profile before he announcedhe was running for mayor, but whybother wasting such juicy gossipwhen it would get so much morepublicity if it came out a few weekslater.

He lied and cheated, and I don'tcondone either practice, but I don'tthink this is a reflection of hisability to run a city. Bill Clinton waspaying a little too much attention tohis interns, yes, but he was one ofthe best and most productiveleaders the U.S. has seen indecades. We lost him over a sexscandal, and ended up with GeorgeW. TWICE.

Torontonians have lostGiambrone to a sex scandal...; ifhistory repeats itself, the nextdecade is looking pretty bleak.

Iwas wondering how I wasgoing to make an article abouta gardener entertaining, but withthis particular gardener as thesubject, it wasn't an issue. Richardstudied Landscape and Aboricultureat Humber College, and has spentthe past 12 years up to his elbows inLandscape design andMaintenance. I asked him whatattracted him to the art/industry inthe first place.

"Gardening just centered me,to be honest. You get to see thecycle of life and how everything hasits time and its purpose." A personsgarden is far more than just soil, foliage and decor- it's an artisticexpression and homeowners allhave a different idea of what agarden should be. Richard hascome across thousands of these

visions and believes that onesgarden, and how he or she

approaches it, saysa great deal aboutwho they are.

"Most peoplewho care a lotabout gardens are abit odd to me," hesays, obviouslyaware that a careerin gardeningdoesn't make himany less 'odd'. I asked him for a

few pointers forthose of us who have yet to becomeacquainted with our green thumbs...1. Read the tags ("it may sound

silly", but there is no point plantinga flower that requires directsunlight under a tree)2. If you plant something in a

particular spot and it dies the firsttime, it might not live the secondtime. Try moving a few feet- couldmake a huge difference3. Grandma's recipes aren't

always right, but they aren't alwayswrong either. (My grandmother putseggshells in the compost for herprize winning roses, and myboyfriend thought I was crazy todump cold tea down the draininstead of into the garden.)4. Be realistic- do what you

want, but only what you are able andwilling to maintain5. Mulching makes things look

neater and cleaner, and only needsto be done a couple of times a year.Besides, "mulching hides amultitude of gardening sins."

The Federation of Metro Tenants Associations Goes GreenThough they don’t often get

credit for it, tenants are oneof the most energy efficientpopulations in all of Canada.

Think about it. When it comes toa carbon footprint, tenants live indenser housing which uses lesselectricity per square meter. Theyproduce less waste, use less waterand gas and spend less time at homeusing appliances.

Though tenants should beconsidered green ‘heros’ inToronto, they don’t always getthe recognition they deserve.

This is because hi-risebuildings can containhundreds of tenants. Onebuilding can have a hugeenvironmental impact interms of carbon produced, garbage created and resourcesused.

While tenants have some controlover energy, garbage, water and gas, landlords have a far greater impact. For example:

>> Proper sealing of windows andcracks in a building is a landlord’sjob and can reduce heat loss, theuse of gas and emissions of carbonfar more than an individual tenant.

>> A good recycling system andgarbage collection set-up by alandlord can ensure maximumrecycling in hi-rise buildings.

>> Energy efficient light-bulbs,shower heads, draft-guarded doorsand properly functioning faucetwashers could be installed by alandlord saving water, electricity andheat.

>> Because most landlordsprovide the appliances for apartmentbuildings, newer energy efficientappliances use much less energythan older, less efficient models

Though landlords have the mostpower to affect energy, resource and

garbage use in a building, newinitiatives by the province areinstead focusing on tenants.

The Provincial government iscurrently creating a law to maketenants use even less energythrough the use of time-of-usepricing and “smart sub-meters”.

Time-of-use pricing is agovernment system which tries tolower the amount of electricity used

when energy consumption acrossOntario is highest. This means thatenergy will be more expensivebetween certain ‘peak’ hours to tryto reduce consumption during thosehours.

Though increases in utility costsaffect many landlords, thousands oftenants will also feel the effects oftime-of-use pricing. Currently, 25%of tenants in Toronto pay theirutilities directly.

While tenants who do not pay forelectricity may feel immune higherenergy costs, they are not. UnderOntario law, if utility costs go up,landlords can apply to the courts fora higher rent increase to cover thosecosts.

In addition, a new law is currentlybeing worked on by the province.Bill 235 mandates that all new unitshave smart sub-meters which willshow how much energy is beingused in a unit and the time-of-use.This will lead to future tenantshaving to pay the cost of utilities andleave them to try to reduce theirelectricity consumption.

Although the aim of Bill 235 is to

reduce energy use, the burden isfalling on tenants to do so.Landlords, who have the greatesteffect through maintenance, appliances and recycling systemsare not being targeted.

The City of Toronto is currentlytrying to tackle these greater issuessuch as hi-rise heat-loss, buildingretrofits to reduce carbon emissionsand energy infrastructure through

their Tower RenewalProject. While they arefocusing on the areas withthe greatest effect, they areonly in the pilot phase anddo not currently have anyfunding.

The Federation of MetroTenants Associations(FMTA) is a non-profitOrganization which

advocates for better rights forTenants. As the oldest and largestTenant Federation in Canada wefight for tenants rights and for bettertenant education. Much of our workis funded by our over 3,000members.

We have materials onconservation which can help tenantssave energy, water and money whilereducing their low-carbon-footprinteven more.

Most importantly we are workingwith the City of Toronto to ensuretheir Tower Renewal Project ensuresthe best environmental practiceswhile also including more parks, natural areas, gardens and publicspaces for tenants.

MUSIC: TheSchombergFair atSneakyDee's

For twoy e a r s ,

once upon atime, I went tohigh school witha guy by thename of MattBahen. He waskind, soft-

spoken, and popular, with shoulder-length dark hair and a guitar slungover his shoulder. These days,Matt looks pretty much the same asI remember him, although he hasless hair on his head and more onhis face, but he isn't as quiet as heused to be. This is a good thing.Matt grew up in a little town calledSchomberg. There isn't much to dothere most of the time, so theresidents look forward to theannual Schomberg Fair. Therewere animals and a demolitionderby, music, rides, and endlessdrinking, partying and good old-fashioned debauchery. Like theevent, the band is worth traversingthe country side to see, and like thefair, their show is memorable, musical and full of surprises. Mattis the lead vocalist, but the truewonder of his performance is hisinstrumentation on both the guitarand bango. With precision andgrace, he belts out both high-speedriffs and beautiful melodies toenhance the slower tunes. Thebass player has a voice to matchhis instrument, which contributesto the rich and powerful overallsound. At first, they reminded meof a punk version of the band"System of a Down", but theirdiversity impressed me as the showwent on. The first ballad is full ofsoul and the band plays itbeautifully, a sure sign of a greatrock band. They follow that up witha country tune. Matt and the bassplayer are perfect for it vocally. Iam not a big fan of country music, but the take The Schomberg Fairhas on the genre is far more

enticing than I have grown toexpect. They take something thatwould be whiney and twangy androck it right out, proving that, justbecause you live in the countrydoesn't mean you can't behardcore!

Milow at the Drake

My desire to check out new venuesled me to the Drake to seeJonathan Vandenbroeck, a 28-year-old singer/songwriter known asMilow. His cover of 50 Cents 'AyoTechnology' has been successful inthe charts right across Europe andhis CD was recently metenthusiastically when it wasreleased here in Canada. It soldmore in 18 months here than it didin Milow's home country ofBelgium; Jonathan was flattered todiscover how much more popularhe was here than at home and hishumbled reaction to ourappreciation was obvious and, frankly, kind of cute. He plays soloacoustic guitar and sings- he'snatural, not flashy, with a nice, genuine smile. His voice is calmingand pleasant, and unlike many liveshows, the vocals are crystal clear. Some of his tunes are highly

universal and relatable, othersmore personal and specific, like"Stephanie" about a girl who waskilled at the age of 18. His song"Canada" is fantastic, referring tothe hope that Neil Young will lovehis songs, and moving to the US totake over when Canada becomes"too small". Its interesting to seehow people from Belgium view ourcountry and our relationship withthe States. It's not unlike theopinion of most other countries.Although his music is emotionaland realistic, it's not negative ordepressing. The covers he doescompliment the originals, so theset flowed well. His mastery ofknowing the perfect volume hisguitar should be at for each numberis impressive, and rare- it's soimportant to have the mic andinstruments at the most flatteringvolume, and the one mostappropriate for the venue and styleof music. So many artist justignore whats best and shoot forloud. His first attempt at a lovesong is hillarous. He hopes thewoman gets fat or paralyzed sothey don't leave- it's called "In mypocket", because he wants her tobe so small he can fit her in hispocket. Milow is charming, talented, funny and sweet; hismusic makes you smile or brings atear to your eye. The people inBelgium don't know what they aremissing- lets try to keep this artisthere for us to enjoy.

Maddy Rodriguezat the Great Hall

The great hall has a secondroom that is more casual

and intimate than the first. In thesecond room was a showcase of acollection of artists including thevery young Maddy Rodriguez. Themelody of the first song I heard waspowerful enough to tug at the heartstrings, was memorable and hadthe makings of a Top 40 hit. Beforeeven reaching the age of highschool completion, Maddy hasalready accomplished so much, including an appearance on MuchMusic's 'Disband'. Her voice isbeautiful, although it has yet tofully mature. She has pretty muchmastered what she has now which

is good because her voice isalready so high that if she wentmuch higher only dogs could hearher. Maddy is spectacular already, both on guitar and vocally, but thepotential for an even more amazingvoice in a few years is impossible tomiss. She looks so natural on stageits as if she has be performinglonger than she's been alive. Keepyour eyes and ears open for thisToronto songstress, because hermusic career is growing even fasterthan she is.

Bootleg Glory

The clothes and hairstyles of thisToronto band make it look like themembers have absolutely nothingin common, but it works becausetheir music is just as eclectic bothin style and in the era. Their voiceshave an equally broad range, switching from metal to rock tomusic nothing like metal or rock.Instrumentally, they areunpredictable, following noparticular formula. The band is funto listen to because you can't forthe life of you figure out what thenext song will sound like. Themelodies are beautiful andmelancholy, complimented byheavier choruses and versesthroughout the tune. The singer is

was terrible, soI was alreadyc o n s i d e r i n gchoosing bandsbased ong e o g r a p h i c a lvicinity to oneanother. Alas, Iwas still boundand determinedto check out afew venues I hadn't been to in thepast. An artist showcase was onat the Great Hall, so we coulddefrost and check out a couple ofartists without drowning in therainstorm. What a great venue! The mainconcert hall has the old- fashionedlook and feel that can typicallyonly be found at old theaters likeMassey Hall. The acoustics areimpossible to recreate in a club

with square or rectangular rooms, and the old, rounded balconies addauthenticity and class thatcompliments an array of musicalstyles.

The first song we heard from Juliewas a ballad with a soft beat,"Tommorrow'll be alright",appropriately Marley-esque after

her introduction telling usabout her visit to Jamaica. Her powerful voice wasdisplayed even better in thenext song, an old-schoolreggae beat with R&B andintermittent keyboardsplaying a catchy melody. Itwas an interesting andappealing mixture, reminiscent of old Mary J.Blige. The unique quality thatgot me hooked was that realmusicians were playing whatwould typically beelectronically sampled thesedays. I found the distortionadded an intriguing flavourand substance but my editordisagreed. He felt they hadtoo much going through thePA and it was overloaded. Toeach his own I suppose. I spent two night being hit in the

head with Paul's ridiculous littleumbrella, clinging to the illusionthat it was actually keeping medry. I have to give credit wherecredit is due though. Last year wegrew to expect a twenty minuteMINIMUM delay from the time aband was scheduled to startplaying and when they actuallywould. This year, we timedeverything WRONG. We were toolate for half the bands the firstnight and too EARLY for half thebands the next night. Everythingseemed to be happening right onschedule this year, which is noteasy with the sheer size of thefestival, number of bands andvenues scattered throughout thedowntown core. I don't know howthe organizers did it, but it wasimpressive to say the least. I willhave faith next year, and follow theschedule. This is the second yearI have had the honour of CoveringCMW, and I am so proud to beliving in Toronto and hosting theevent. Artists flock to our fair cityevery year to showcase theirtalent, and it happens right in ourbackyard. This also gives thehomegrown talent a chance to addtheir own spice to the eclectic andgifted music scene that is startingto take the rest of the world bystorm. Some of the greatestartists hail from Canada, and thedream of being a rock star is farfrom dead in this country. With thehelp of festivals like CMW andNXNE, the dedicated teams behindthem , and the growing supportand enthusiasm of Torontonianmusic fans, the dream of being aCanadian ROCK STAR is justgetting started!

Shrek Forever After (Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz)

The first movie was impossible tobeat, and Shrek the Third was, in myhumble opinion, as funny, if notfunnier than the original. The FinalChapter was a nice movie with amoral twist to it, as the first threehad, and seeing the big green fellain 3-D was a bonus, but it lacked thehumour of its predecessors. Mydaughter enjoyed it, and theoverpriced popcorn she munchedon throughout, and I chuckled a fewtimes, but the Shrek era didn't goout with quite the bang I had hoped.I own the first three on DVD, but Idon't see myself buying ForeverAfter. I could handle watching theothers ad nausea at the insistenceof my 5-year-old daughter, but thisone would get old quickly.

MOVIES: Shrek Forever After, Robin hood, Inglourious BasterdsRobin HoodR e g a r d i n gcinematography, scenery andeffects, thismovie is onethat should beseen on the bigscreen. Ienjoyed it, butfelt that I would

have been less impressed with it onregular television. It was aninteresting take on the historybehind the Robin Hood famethough, and the the part of Robinhimself was well played by RusselCrowe. In fact, the entire moviewas cast well- the emotions andcharacteristics of each part camethrough the actor/actressbelievably and sincerely, whetherportraying good or evil. CateBlanchette, for example, was agreat choice for the part of MarionLoxley- the perfect combination ofstrength and vulnerability. Some ofthe war scenes are a little graphicfor the younger crowd- it may havebeen appropriate for a much wideraudience without such detail. Atthe same time, kids should knowthat there are CONSEQUENCES tolaunching pointed objects atpeoples heads- this movie certainlymakes that hard to deny.

Inglourious Basterds(Quentin Tarantino)Quentin Tarantino never disappointedme in the past, so it wasn't exactly ashock to find that I loved this movie. The premise alone was fantastic- infact, I think history would havebenefited greatly from Brad Pitt andhis trusty band of hardcore Nazi-hunters. The violence in Tarantinomovies is not for the young, or the faintof heart, and many directors throw inbloodshed for no apparent reason, butQuentin's movies wouldn't be thesame without some seriously warpedand disturbing content. His uniquebrand of creativity shines through inthis war-time action flick, and the castcertainly does it justice. I haven'tmuch patience for even passiveracism, so watching Nazis die amultitude of interesting andgraphically violent deaths isn't thatdifficult. The movie and the cast werenominated and won so many awards

worldwide that tolist them would fillup the entire paper, but I daresay theywere all well-deserved. If youare one of the fewwho hasn't seenthis movie, doyourself a favourand check it out.

FOOD: Madras Masala South Indian Cuisine at Its Finest

bloornews.com -- roncesvallesreporter.com -- stjamestownnews.com - coupons are on printablecanadiancoupons.com - Page 28

By Melissa Peters

Driving by Christie Pits, Ialways wondered why

someone would open up an IndianRestaurant right beside, well, anIndian Restaurant, but my visit to

Madras Masala helped clear up thatlittle mystery. While MadrasMasala specializes in SOUTH IndianCuisine, the same owners offerNORTH Indian Cuisine right nextdoor. Although many dishes arerelevant to both, and the kitchen inwilling to borrow from it's neighbor, the specialization means that eachrestaurant can focus on making theIndian Food from that region great;not just good. Aabfter dining atMadras Masala, and discoveringthe two establishments were run bythe same people, I am dying to walk

a few steps to the "north". I asked my friendly,

knowledgeable and highlyprofessional server torecommend a couple of

dishes to try. Wesettled on theMadras MasalaChicken Curry inchopped gingerand peppers($9.99) and theChicken Xacutti, chicken in a blend ofroasted coconut, onion andspices, "A Goan Specialty"for $10.99. The two disheswere presented to me withfresh garnish and piping hotHome-style Paratha fordipping (and to cool downthe palate a touch if Ineeded to). The heat, however, was not at alloverbearing. Each dish had

a bit of a bite to it, but it wasn'tenough to overshadow the perfectcombination of spices and textures. Both were so flavourful it wasimpossible to choose a favorite. The chicken was tender and hadbeen stewing in the sauces longenough to take on thecharacteristics of the dish.

I had a regional beer, "Cheetah"with my meal, which was brewed tocompliment the cuisine and didprecisely what it claimed. It wascrisp and cold, with enough taste to

make it enjoyable on its own, butmodest enough to leave room onmy palate for the meal.

I had more than enough of mymeal left to take home a doggy-bag(and that was after asking for halfportions). The food was fantastic, but I wanted to save room fordessert, as there were a few itemson that menu that intrigued me.Malai Kulfi is a homemade icecream made with almonds andflavoured with cardamoms ($3.50).

The decor is pleasant andappropriate- classy without beingstuffy. The patio overlooks ChristiePits, which would be a beautifulview on a nice summer day. Theprices are reasonable, the servicespectacular, and the food, delicious.

Food: Yefseis: Catering, Take-out, Dine-in (Daily Specials)

bloornews.com -- roncesvallesreporter.com -- stjamestownnews.com - coupons are on printablecanadiancoupons.com - Page 30

If you spent time around Church andWellesley, or just took part in Pridefestivities between 1994 and 2000,you may remember a blue sign witha yellow spiral on it and the name"Pita Pan". You may also remembera pleasant woman smiling kindly atyou from behind the counter namedMaria. The name stayed the samefor a while but different faces grilledthe pitas, until now. Maria is backwith her new endeavor, Yefseis, which is Greek for "flavours". WhenMaria ran Pita Pan, it achievedrecognition far outside theboundaries of Toronto, bringingrepeat visitors from as far as NewYork, so she obviously has a knackfor providing the "flavours" peoplewant. The fries are cut fresh, andwhat isn't homemade is importedstraight from the old country, so it'sthe place to go if you are looking forauthentic Greek cuisine. If you andyour friends love Greek food, catering is available for as little as$10.95/person, and that includesdessert. It was just myself andLaura, our quiet Parisian intern, dining that afternoon, so we opted to

dine in. A clear, garage-stylepaneled door opens up onto bustlingChurch St. and original oil paintingshang on the walls. The place isclean, bright and cheerful, withsalads and dips displayed at thecounter and the kitchen area clearlyvisible (it's always nice to know theyhave nothing to hide!!). I perusedthe menu, noting the reasonableprices and generous portions beinghanded to the take-out clientele, while Maria dropped free samples ofsome sort of pastry into each paperbag. Laura and I started with aselection of dips and freshly grilledpitas. The Roasted Red PepperHummus was mild with a very

pleasant flavour. The Hummus andtzatziki were more traditional, withthe nice bite of garlic that screamsauthenticity. Too many people over-Americanize food and it's often leftwith mere traces of the flavours forwhich it became famous. Thezucchini dip, which had a salsa-likeconsistency was crisp andrefreshing beside the thicker dips, and the roasted peppers were agreat way to add texture and taste. The main course was Barbecued

Chicken with rice and Tabouli- Iappreciated Maria's suggestion ofmixing the two sides togetherbecause the result was fantastic. The rice wasn't overcooked; aplague of many Greek eateries, andthe tabouli made it even better. Thechicken breast was so tender, Ialmost forgot I was eating whitemeat (I prefer dark), and the skinwas perfectly crispy and expertlyseasoned. For dessert, we tried theGalaktobouriko, which is Greekhomemade custard pie; the crustmade me think of a softer, moisterversion of baklava. It was burstingwith taste; not filled with emptysugars and sweetness, butinteresting textures and richflavours.
