Making it Meaningful! What do your typical daily activities include? Perhaps you go to work, talk to family and friends, exercise, go out to eat, attend worship, read or watch TV and much more. Now imagine yourself in assisted living. The inclination to be active and involved in things doesn’t change as we age, but the things we are doing may change. There are 1,440 minutes in a day. Take away working, commuting, eating, caregiving, and sleeping, and you’re left with several hundred minutes to engage in other activities. Most of us find ways to fill that time to the point where we crave more minutes in the day, but in assisted living, downtime can be a challenge to fill, especially for people with reduced mobility and cognitive function.

Ways to Prevent Elderly DehydrationSenior dehydration is a common health issue that can lead to bigger problems such as urinary tract infections and low blood pressure. Proper hydration helps to keep the body and vitals regulated.

Administrator’s Corner by Brittany SchwabauerMake it meaningful! Country Side Living strives to make our residents feel as though their lives have meaning, purpose and importance. We challenge this by creating predictable, yet flexible daily routines that place emphasis on self-care activities. We have core activities that are basic self-care tasks such as eating, dressing, bathing, grooming and toileting. There are necessary activities such as natural sleep, rest and privacy that help reduce stress and regain energy. We include essential activities such as communication, movement and touch that create health and purpose in life. And we have meaningful activities that include work, play and recreation that are stress free, give joy and purpose to all individuals involved. Meaningful activities are created to allow each resident to experience something engaging. They are designed to support their current strengths and abilities. It is important to remember that the desired outcomes of an activity are the positive feelings and enjoyment that the resident feels. This is their moment, their window of happiness. Make it count!
