8/17/2019 May 9 vs. Detroit
1/4
HOME SWEET HOMEThe Nationals return to Nationals Park tonight after their rst 10-game road trip fo the 2016
season, carrying with them a 5-5 mark from a trip that took them to St. Louis, Kansas City and
Chicago (Cubs)...Tonight’s contest vs. Detroit will start a six-game, seven-day homestand for
Washington.
• At 8-4 (.667), the Nationals have the second-base home record in the National League
(T3rd in MLB), behind only the Cubs (11-3, .786).
WALK THE WALK
Nationals OF Bryce Harper walked 13 times in the Nationals’ recent four-game series with the
Chicago Cubs, including six walks in Sunday’s 13-inning nale...With his many free passes to
rst base, Harper’s day, and series, were incredibly unique:
• Via the Elias Sports Bureau, Harper set a modern MLB record (since 1900) on Sunday for
the most plate appearances without an at-bat in a single game: in his seven trips to the
plate, Harper walked six times and was hit by a pitch.
• With 10 walks, a HBP and a sacrice y in his last 12 plate appearances, Harper’s current
streak of consecutive plate appearances without an at-bat is also a modern MLB record.• Harper’s 13 walks in the series are the most any player in MLB has collected in a four-game
series dating to 1913, per STATS Inc ., which is as far back as their research allows...Harper
broke a record that had been in place for nearly 86 years, dating back to Max Bishop
(Philadelphia Athletics vs. NYY, May 21, 1930) and Eddie Joost (Philadelphia Athletics
vs. STL, June 21, 1948)...Bishop and Joost both walked 12 times in the four-game set.
• Also via STATS, Harper is the rst player in at least 40 years to receive two intentional
walks in extra innings with rst base and second base occupied each time.
HARPER NEARING A ANOTHER RECORD
Entering tonight’s game, OF Bryce Harper has reached base safely via hit, walk and hit by
pitch in nine consecutive plate appearances...According to the Elias Sports Bureau, he joins
OAK Josh Reddick for the longest streak this season...Reddick’s streak is also intact enter-
ing play tonight.
• The longest streak in Nationals history (2005-pres.) is held by Nick Johnson (10; 6/18-20,
2009) and Rusty Staub holds the Nationals/Expos record (10, 9/24-27, 1969).
HITS ON HITS ON HITS
Nationals 2B Daniel Murphy collected his 15th multi-hit game of the season on Sunday with
a 2-for-7 afternoon...Murphy’s 15-multi-hit games are tied with Baltimore’s Manny Machado
and Pittsburgh’s Starling Marte for the most in the Major Leagues...The Nationals’ second
baseman has hit safely in eight of his last 10 games, going 18-for-41 (.439) with ve doubles,
two homers, eight RBI and 10 runs scored...He has posted multi-hit efforts in ve of the 10
games and has recorded at least one RBI in six of the 10.
• Murphy ranks among MLB hitters in batting average (3rd, .395), OPS (3rd, 1.083), doubles
(T4th, 12), on-base percentage (5th, .439) and slugging percentage (8th, .640).
• On the season, Murphy has hit safely in 25 of his 30 games played.
WELCOME BACK, BEN!
The Nationals returned from rehab and reinstated OF Ben Revere on Friday...Revere missed
27 games after suffering a right oblique strain on Opening Day in Atlanta...He appeared in
ve rehab games with Triple-A Syracuse...To make room on the 25-man roster, the Nationals
optioned OF Matt den Dekker to Syracuse.
• Revere collected his rst in a Nationals uniform, a leadoff double in the bottom of the third
inning on May 7...He added to that with a triple in the seventh to nish the day 2-for-5 with
two runs.
HEROIC HURLERS
Through the season’s rst 31 games, the Nationals’ pitching staff, as a whole, ranks fourth in
MLB with a 2.80 ERA...The staff also ranks in MLB in opp. slugging percentage (2nd, .336),
opp. average (2nd, .224), opp. OPS (2nd .628), opp. OBP (4th, .292), hits/9.0 innings (2nd,
7.34), WHIP (3rd, 1.13), HR/9.0 innings (4th, 0.69) and strikeouts (4th, 273).
• The Nationals boast three starting pitchers in the top 11 in ERA in the National League:
RHP Tanner Roark (5th, 2.03), LHP Gio Gonzalez (9th, 2.19), and RHP Stephen Stras-
burg (11th, 2.36)...At 1.23, RHP Joe Ross would rank second, but falls just short of quali-
fyin gto be among the league leaders.
• Since April 23rd, Mike Maddux’s pitching staff leads Major League Baseball with 150
strikeouts, ahead of the Los Angeles Dodgers (136).
AMONG THE BEST TO EVER DO IT
Locking down the victory with a scoreless ninth inning on Monday at KC, Nationals closer
Jonathan Papelbon secured his ninth save of the season and the 358th save of his career,
tying Troy Percival for the 10th most in baseball history.
