Belle Plaine Drops Five of Sixby Dan RuudThe rapid runoff from previous

postponements continued for the Belle Plaine High School baseball team as it played five games in seven days this past week. The Tigers dropped a nonconference game at Glen-coe-Silver Lake 4-1 last Tues-day and were then swept in a doubleheader at frigid NYA 4-3 and 3-2 on Thursday. This past Monday, Belle Plaine returned to Tiger Park for another MRC doubleheader against Jordan and this time earned a split, los-ing the first game 8-0 before winning the second 4-2.The Tigers, 3-5 in the Min-

nesota River Conference, 3-6 overall, are scheduled to travel to Mayer Lutheran for a twin bill 4 p.m. this Thursday before taking on Sibley East for two more games 4 p.m. next Mon-day at Tiger Park.

Glencoe-SL 4, Tigers 1The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in

the top of the first inning but that’s where their offense end-ed. Glencoe-Silver Lake scored one run in each of its first two at-bats and added two more in the third inning for the only other scoring in the game as the host Panthers prevailed 4-1.“Our pitchers really did a nice

job of throwing strikes and bat-tling to overcome a couple er-rors,” said Tigers coach Pat Schultz. “We made a lot of plays defensively but had a couple untimely errors that G-SL took advantage of that eventually cost us the game. Our bats were pretty silent tonight and that is an area that we really need to focus on improving.”“This was a nice game for us

to get a lot of guys some needed work,” Schultz continued. “We used five different pitchers and got a chance to see all of our guys get some at-bats and see what everyone could do.”Cameron Klehr, Gavin Dau-

walter, Nick Eliason and Mitch-ell Nelson each pitched one in-ning and Jack Winders two for Belle Plaine. Combined, they allowed just four hits and one earned run. However, the Ti-gers managed only three hits – one apiece from Eliason,

Colton Hentges and Dauwalter. Eliason scored the team’s only run.

with single tallies in the first and second innings before the home team tied it with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Tigers managed to regain the lead with a run in the top of the seventh inning but the Raiders won it with a walk-off run-scor-ing double in the bottom of the inning.“It was a tough loss and one

that we had several chances to win, but just couldn’t make the big plays when needed,” Schul-tz said.The coach added that starting

pitcher Derek Dahlke threw an-other “very nice game but a big error and a couple walks drove up his pitch count.”Dahlke lasted five innings, al-

lowing two runs (one earned) on two hits. He Struck out 11. Aaron Bigaouette pitched the final 1 1/3 innings, surrendering two earned runs on two hits.Belle Plaine, which out-hit

NYA 7-4, was led offensively by Eliason, who had a single, dou-ble, RBI and stolen base. Zach Bahr, Dahlke, Jacob Meger, Zach Juaire and Bigaouette had the Tigers’ other hits.“Nick Eliason had a good day

at the plate as he continues to get on base and cause havoc for the opposing pitchers,” Schultz said.

erased a 2-0 deficit in the third inning, but again the Tigers wound up on the short end of the final score as the Raiders scored the winning run in the top of the seventh inning.“This was another frustrating

game,” Schultz said. “We al-lowed two unearned runs in the third inning and they scored the winning run in the top of the seventh with a couple hits that were not hard hit but fell out of the reach of our fielders.”Meger pitched the distance

for Belle Plaine, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits. He struck out seven.

“He had a very solid start that was unfortunately wasted by a couple errors and a lack of hit-ting,” Schultz said. “This con-cluded a tough week of baseball record-wise for the boys. How-ever, we had some great starting pitching and if we can get the bats going and continue to im-prove our defense, I fully expect to have a successful second half of the MRC season and make a push into the playoffs. any better for Belle Plaine as Jordan came to town and won the first game of a doublehead-er 8-0 at Tiger Park.The game was still tied in the

fourth inning but a two-out er-ror led to two unearned runs and the Tigers did not recover.The Hubmen had just six hits

but took advantage of nine walks and three Belle Plaine errors.Johnson started on the hill for

the Tigers and absorbed the loss, pitching 3 2/3 innings and al-lowing two runs (none earned) and only two hits. He did issue seven walks. Bigaouette and Dauwalter hurled the final 2 1/3 innings, allowing a combined six runs (three earned).Belle Plaine had just five hits –

one apiece by Eliason, Johnson, Juaire, Nelson and Winders.

Tigers 4, Jordan 2The Tigers had little time to

wash away the sourness of an 8-0 loss at home but were able to do so, even after falling be-hind 2-0 after three innings in the second game. Belle Plaine tied the score with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning and added two more in the sev-enth to win 4-2 and snap a five-game losing skid.Emmers (four innings) and

Dahlke (three innings) shared the pitching duties for the Ti-gers. Emmers allowed two un-earned runs on three hits and three walks. Dahlke did not al-low a hit and struck out four.“Chase Emmers had another

solid start and kept us in the game until our bats finally got going,” Schultz said. “We loaded the bases in the fourth and Zach Bahr took advantage with a two-RBI single to tie the game. Derek Dahlke came in relief in the fifth and kept the score tied with a dominant ap-pearance and eventually earned the win.”In the seventh inning, Bahr

drew a two-out walk and Dahl-ke singled. Johnson then drove them both home with a double. “This was a great win for us.

We were forced to come back and we didn’t quit. We had a lot of base runners and finally had a few clutch hits and at-bats,” Schultz said. “We still have a lot to work on at the plate as we head into a busy stretch of games with two on Thursday at Mayer Lutheran and six games next week.”

Tigers’ season was scheduled to start last friday against St. Benedict but Mother Nature did not cooperate. The Tigers were forced to cancel due to all-around bad weather, includ-ing rain, snow and cold temps. Dollar Dog Night has been switched to friday, May 10 against Cannon falls, so not all is lost in the dreary rainout.The Tigers did take the field on

Sunday at Prior Lake, suffering a 9-3 setback to the Jays.Aside from Cannon falls on

friday, the Tigers will host the Class B-powerhouse Shakopee Indians on Sunday at 6 p.m.

Sunday was officially the first game under new manager Mike Schultz – except he for-got on purpose to show up, and the game was managed by brother Matt. (for the record, not a good idea.) The weather couldn’t have been any better, considering how bad this spring has been.The Tigers quickly fell behind

1-0 in the bottom of the first in-ning but the Prior Lake lead was

short-lived. Dan Huber came up in the top of the second and belted his first home run of the year – on the first pitch he saw.Speaking of firsts, the Tigers

welcomed three new players to the team in Jake fielder, Mike Wagner and Ross VanHauen – the latter of whom came up with three hits in his Tigertown debut. Also making his sec-ond Tigertown debut was Nate Hartmann.Trevor Latzke started on the

mound and scattered seven runs over four innings of work and took the loss. Zac Dahlke relieved him and threw well in two innings of work. The last two innings were left to Tiger newbies VanHauen and fielder, who also both looked good.Hitting stars for the Tigers

were Huber with the home run, VanHauen with three hits and Tyler Hartmann chipped in two hits. In this new era of Tiger baseball, the Tigers committed no errors in what seems like the first game since this writer started playing eight years ago.
