Well-Scrubbed Individuals By L. Cole
When I read that statement this last week in prepa-ration for my Sunday morning sermon, it was one of those statements that gets your attention. Perhaps it is a statement that makes you a little uncomfort-able. It was talking about the fact that we may have limited our evangelism to well-scrubbed indi-viduals whom we think would, “fit right in,” with little work on our part. We can put them to work with very little work on our part or their part. They don’t have a lot of baggage. What about that individual who has had a lot of problems in his life? Should we try to teach him?
It seems to me that such was the same problem that Jesus had to deal with in his teaching and life while on this earth. “And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples. And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disci-ples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners? But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician,
but they that are sick. But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance” (Matthew 9:10-13). The Pharisees did not want that kind of person in their assem-blies. Why are you wasting your valuable time on
such people as that. What they failed to realize is what Paul wrote in Ro-mans 3:10, “As it is written, there is none righteous, no not one.” That would include the Pharisees. The very context where we find the statement, “For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10), is describing a publican by the name of Zaccha-eus.
Our work is to present the gospel to as many people as possible—regard-less of the response—and to keep on doing it until the Lord returns. We are expected to keep on telling oth-ers about what Christ did for them (and us) until there is no one left to tell. The child of God is to keep on planting the seed and watering it,
and God will give the increase (I Corinthians 3:5-7). You sow sparingly, you reap sparingly. You sow bountifully, you reap bountifully (II Corinthi-ans 9:6). Jesus told us to go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature (Mark 16:15). How are we doing with this command?

Suggested Good Work
Help care for God’s creation. Pick up trash you see and dispose of it properly.
Control Your Tongue When your words would convey the wrong impression:
“He who has knowledge spares his words, and a man of under-standing is of a calm spirit” (Proverbs 17.27).
Church History
1950: Mitsuo Fuchida, who had radioed “Tora, Tora, Tora” from Pearl Harbor, became a believer in Christ.
1877: Residents of Minnesota ob-serve a statewide day of prayer, set by Governor John Sargent Pillsbury, imploring deliverance from a plague of grasshoppers that had been ravaging their
crops. Many families were on the verge of starvation. In the next two days warm weather would cause millions of larvae to wiggle to life and skeptics scoff; but a plunge in temperature on the fourth day will freeze and kill them.
1731: Death of Daniel Defoe, author of Robinson Crusoe and Journal of the Plague Year, works of fiction noted for their verisimil-itude, which he wrote from a Pu-ritan non-conformist point of view. Two centuries after Defoe’s death, Neesima Shimeta, a Ja-panese youth, would convert to Christ through reading Robinson Crusoe.
1550: Joan Boucher was burned to death in England for denying that the Virgin Mary was sinless. When a bishop preached at her execution, trying to convert her, she told him he, “lied like a rogue,” and bade him, “go and read the Scriptures.”
373: Death of Athanasius. More than any other man, he took up the fight for Christ’s divinity in his
writings. Five times he had been forced into exile. Slander dogged him. Yet he remained faithful to his vision of an uncreated Christ. He was the first to list the books of the New Testament as we know them.
304: Pollio was brought before a judge. When he declared that he was a church reader, he was burned to death in Gibalea (later a city in Hungary).
297: The seven martyrs of Samos are incarcerated for refusing to offer pagan sacrifices and will remain imprisoned until late in June when they will be brought before the Emperor Maximian, reduced to little more than skele-tons. Finally they will be cruci-fied.
