SILENT MEDITATION N.T. Wright, Acts for Everyone, p. 23

Luke stresses the fact that they were all together in one place; the Spirit comes, not to divide but to unite. The coming of the

Spirit at Pentecost is the complimentary fact to the ascension of Jesus into heaven. The risen Jesus in heaven is the presence,

in God’s sphere, of the first part of the ‘earth’ to be transformed into ‘new creation’ in which heaven and earth are joined; the

pouring out of the Spirit on earth is the presence, in our sphere, of the sheer energy of heaven itself. The gift of the Spirit is

thus the direct result of the ascension of Jesus. Because He is the Lord of all, His energy, the power to be and do something

quite new, is available through the Spirit to all who call on Him, all who follow Him, all who trust Him.

GATHERING

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

CALL TO WORSHIP

L: God of wind and fire ,

C: When you send your Spirit, we are created anew.

L: God of mighty oceans, and still waters,

C: When we receive your baptism, we are born anew!

L: So pour out your Spirit!

C: Let sacred waters flow!

ALL: May our hearts and hands be open to receive your gift of life.

God of power, may the boldness of your Spirit transform us, may the gentleness of your Spirit lead us, and

may the gifts of your Spirit equip us to serve and worship you, now and always. AMEN.

THE WORD

REFLECTION ON OUR COMMON HUMANITY

L: O God, your deeds are so many, all done in wisdom – the earth is full of your riches!

C: The fields, the mountains, the seas; all are filled with your creatures, and you feed them all. You

open your hand, and they are filled with good. But now, in this time of separation, and even

isolation, we feel you have hidden your face, you have withdrawn your hand, you have withheld your

breath. We fear we might perish, and return to the dust from which we are made.

L: We cry out;

C: Send forth your breath! Renew the face of the earth!

L: Forgive us, O God, our fear and doubt, our shallowness and selfishness.

C: Help us to sing to you, while we live; let our speech be sweet to you! Release us from our offenses;

bless our being; rejoice in your works, and we shall rejoice in you!

PENTECOST LITANY John Bucki, SJ

L: The coming of the Spirit transforms the Christian community. Locked doors are opened. Fear is

replaced by courage. Peace is proclaimed. The power to forgive sins is present. Those who were afraid now

speak boldly. Thousands hear the message in their own language. The coming of the Spirit is reflected in

our social values.

In a world of racism and xenophobia,

Page 3: May 31, 2020 Bulletin - ovpc.org Docs/May 31, 2020 Bulletin.pdf · Ainslie & Keith Peoples Ruth Schafer Patrick Kennedy Rev. Dave Lovelace Bev Bailey O’Neill Family Brian DeFazio

C: the Spirit speaks to people of every nation under heaven.

L: In a world of fear and doubt and confusion,

C: the Spirit inspires people to open the doors and speak out.

L: In a world of selfishness, competition and control,

C: the Spirit gives out gifts that are shared for the benefit of all.

L: In a world with war, violence and terrorism,

C: the Spirit proclaims a message of peace and reconciliation to all.

L: In a world of economic problems,

C: the Spirit reminds us that the things of the world are meant to be shared by all.

L: In a world where the environment is abused and overused,

C: the Spirit calls us to reform how we live, and to use the earth with care and love.

ALL: In a world of ideology and prejudice, the Spirit calls us to think about things in a new way.

SERMON One Spirit, One Purpose

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

We believe in the Holy Spirit, who establishes the holy catholic church. We are the church: the

people who believe the good news about Jesus, who are baptized, and who share in the Lord’s

Supper. Through these means of grace, the Spirit renews us so that we may serve God in love. All

those who live in union with Christ, whether on earth or with God in heaven, are saints. Our

communion with Christ makes us members one of another. As by His death Christ removed our

separation from God, so by His Spirit Christ removes all that divides us from each other. Breaking

down every wall of hostility, the Spirit makes us, who are many, one body in Christ. God does not

will to be God without us, but instead grants to us creatures eternal life. Communion with Jesus is

eternal life itself. By the Holy Spirit we are joined to Christ through faith and adopted as children,

the sons and daughters of God. Through Christ we are raised from death to new life. For Christ we

shall live to all eternity. AMEN.

Sunday Scriptures May31st

Acts 2:1-21

1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. 5 Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. 6 And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. 7 Amazed and astonished, they asked, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? 9 Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,

10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God's deeds of power." 12 All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "What does this mean?" 13 But others sneered and said, "They are filled with new wine." 14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, "Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. 15 Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o'clock in the morning. 16 No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: 17 "In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,

Page 7: May 31, 2020 Bulletin - ovpc.org Docs/May 31, 2020 Bulletin.pdf · Ainslie & Keith Peoples Ruth Schafer Patrick Kennedy Rev. Dave Lovelace Bev Bailey O’Neill Family Brian DeFazio

and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. 18 Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. 19 And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. 20 The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord's great and glorious day. 21 Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.' 22 When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."

1 Corinthians 12: 3b-13

3b No one can say "Jesus is Lord" except by the Holy Spirit. 4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the

utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses. 12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.

John 20:19-23

19 When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you."
