An outstanding contribution to TETRA The Outstanding Contribution to TETRA Award was presented last night to Kees Verweij, ICT engi- neer for Public Safety within the Vts Police Netherlands organisa- tion. The recipient of this Award is decided by the TETRA Associa- tion, and goes to an individual who has made a significant com- mitment to advancing TETRA. Kees joined the Dutch Police in 1991 as a radio and system test engineer. He has been involved in C2000, the Dutch public safety network, from helping to write the requirements specification, through tender evaluation, con- tract negotiation and system testing to implementation and ongoing development. He is cur- rently working on TETRA Inter- operability, mobile data, TETRA Inter System Interface and Air-to- Ground operation, for which he specified the European frequency plan. Kees represents C2000 on the TETRA Association Technical Forum, TETRA Association Opera- tor/User Association, TC TETRA plenary and TC TETRA Working Group 1. “Kees has a heart and soul connected to the TETRA stan- dard,” said Hans Borgonjen, TETRA Association vice-chairman and a colleague of Kees for over a de- cade. “He is com- mitted to sharing knowledge and en- suring that project successes are made available on an in- ternational basis. He works for the good of the tech- nology on a global basis. “His extensive knowledge en- ables him to move effortlessly between industry and user groups, helping each to under- stand the other’s viewpoint and brokering compromise where necessary. And perhaps most importantly, he is always willing to help others.” The Award was presented to Kees by TETRA Association chairman Phil God- frey, who said: “Kees seems to have an almost unlimited ap- petite to contribute and to share his knowledge with others. He carries the respect of all those in the many working groups and user groups that he is involved with; but best of all he is a really nice person to know.” EADS is to extend the M-Funk TETRA network of Stadtwerke München (SWM). 1100 subscri- bers currently use the network, which is being expanded from 15 to a total of 31 TB3 base stations. SWM is the largest communal energy supplier in Germany, and also offers M-Funk access to ex- ternal customers. Supported by EADS, SWM acquired MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG as its first major customer for M-Funk. The SWM radio network is used primarily by MAN’s works fire brigade and its plant pro- tection and maintenance units. Marketing these professional services and solutions to third parties creates special challenges for the system infrastructure. BHE BRTS24 Repeater

BHE Bonn Hungary is presentingits new generation of TETRA re-peaters on Stand B401. Duringthe design and testing of thisproduct family, which includesboth band- and channel selectiveproducts, the team considered allthe operational experiences ofthe nationwide Hungarian TETRAnetwork, which currently compri-ses over 40,000 terminals. End-user information and feedbackhas been incorporated into thenew products. BHE can offer acomplete range of repeatersfrom 15dBm to several watts, in-cluding optical systems.

Precise planning The main objectives and chal-lenges of radio network plan-ning are obviously to achieve orexceed coverage and networkquality specifications with mini-mal costs involved; and this isespecially important when in-troducing a nationwide digitalTETRA network, says LS telcom.Precise planning is the guaran-

tee to not onlyachieve the ex-pected qualityand network coverage, but atthe same timeto ensure a mostco s t- e f fe c t i venetwork design as well as amost profitable network opera-

Teltronic’s MVC 6000 – The futuretoday?

Zetron adds to Middle East successZetron has announced multipledeployments of its DCS-5020 di-gital consoles for a major publicsafety and border control com-munications project in theMiddle East.Comprising more than 60 opera-tor positions, the DCS-5020 sys-tems provided under thiscontract allow seamless integra-tion of TETRA and legacy analo-gue communications systemssuch as MDC1200 & GE Star radionetwork as well as enabling in-tegration of telephony and web-based services.

This deployment builds on Ze-tron’s previous successes in theMiddle East. In conjunction withits regional partners, Zetron hasdeployed console systems intothe public safety, oil & gassectors as well as solutions forport and harbour control. The configuration supplied underthis latest contract was initiallyconfigured as a large number of

small, independent controlrooms. However, after shipmentthe customer decided to reconfi-gure the system to provide avery large single deploymentconsisting of 15 operators plus anumber of smaller control rooms. The flexibility of the DCS-5020meant the last minute reconfigu-ration was successfully achieved.Check Zetron out on Stand C102.

The sharpest TETRA radio

The Basque Go-vernment networkoperator, Itelazpi, has joined forceswith Teltronic tobuild a TETRA NE-BULA network. The Basque Coun-try’s geography isspectacular – andchallenging. A po-pulation in excessof two million isspread out acrosscoastal and moun-tainous terrain inthree provinces and as many as 250 separatemunicipalities.

The Itelazpi TETRA system has been plannedto work on a large scale: it consists of an initial140 base station sites connected to three pro-vincial nodes, including full redundancy, a com-mand and control centre, network managementand billing system to cater for several thousandcustomers. Full regional coverage will be achie-ved by the end of 2009.

Data will play an important role in the Ite-lazpi network. Local utilities will have access to real-time meteorological and hydrological te-lemetry data by integrating sensors, data log-ging and SCADA systems using the TETRAPeripheral Equipment Interface (PEI). Transportcompanies, public safety and other users willhave access to automatic vehicle location (AVL),passenger information and data bases.Teltronic is on Stand C301.

EADS TETRA in the pipeline for Russianoil and gasEADS is to extend the SurgutneftegasTETRA network in Western Siberia. The project will complete the expe-rimental EADS network already im-plemented, replacing the existinganalogue network. The network willprovide radio coverage for the Surgut-neftegas oil and gas fields, as well asfor part of the Surgutneftegas pipe-line. The project is scheduled to befully operational by the end of 2009.

“This is a great reference for us inthe oil and gas industry as well as areal challenge. Our teams are lookingforward to deliver specific solutionsthat will match the technical spe-ci fications, the extreme weather constraints and the geographical peculiarities“ said Dirk Borchardt,Head of Security & CommunicationSolutions in EADS Defence & Security.DS is working in close collaborationwith T-Helper, its VAR in Russia.
