MAY 27, 2018

Over the past few weeks, our parishioners have been discussing the diocesan plan to partner Our Lady of Grace Parish and Saint Bernard Parish in the On Mission for the Church Alive project initiated by Bishop David A. Zubik. After consideration of a few other models over the past couple years, our bishop has decided that Our Lady of Grace and Saint Bernard is the best grouping for the communities in Scott Township and Mt. Lebanon. The more I work with Fr. David Bonnar, current pastor of St. Bernard and the future administrator of our two parishes, the more confidence I have that we can successfully bring about this merger, in 2021 and do it in a way that benefits the people in both communities. A couple of weeks ago, I met with Principal Sharon Brown’s School Advisory Board to discuss how the parish merger will impact the two schools. The members of the board asked intelligent and serious questions and I fielded them the best I could given that I won’t be at OLG after October 15, 2018. The one thing I assured the board members was that our school, gymnasium, field, parking lot, 16 acres, etc., will certainly be a part of any plan that proposes the merger of the two schools in the future. We have excellent school facilities that will enhance the Catholic education of the students from both schools. Last week, I met with our parish pastoral council to continue the dialogue about the partnership of Our Lady of Grace and Saint Bernard. Be assured that they asked me tough questions, not minimizing the challenges that face us. The pastoral council is deeply loyal to OLG but also realistic about finding ways to build bridges between our two parishes in accordance with Bishop Zubik’s direction. I am of the mind to go slowly in ‘bridging the gap,’ so to speak, so as not to risk offending the sensibilities of people from either parish. Fr. David Bonnar, younger than me by a decade, is more bold and courageous, and anxious to bring our two parish communities together. To that end, we have already had a lunch meeting at the Walnut Grill; he’s met and talked with our school principal; he attended our Pentecost Sacred Arts Festival, after which I gave him a tour of our grounds and buildings; and last week we offered him the use of the Upper Room for a meeting. We will continue to talk and meet regularly in the weeks ahead. Fr. David Bonnar has written graciously in St. Bernard’s bulletin about bringing our two communities together, evidencing a seasoned sensitivity to the nuances and complexities that make our task challenging. He ’ll lead us well in this delicate mission to partner our parishes and renew our communities. Pray for both Our Lady of Grace Parish and Saint Bernard Parish in this time of transition. Fr. Richard A. Infante, Pastor
