CARACAS (AFP) - Vene-zuela yesterday said it or-dered 3,000 soldiers to itsnorthwestern border, justdays after leftist Colombianguerrillas ambushed aColombian army patrol andkilled 12 soldiers.
The Colombian militarysaid it was "very likely" thatrebels with the RevolutionaryArmed Forces of Colombia(FARC) crossed fromVenezuela to stage the attackin a remote area on the Gua-jira Peninsula, then fled backacross the border.
Two brigades fromVenezuela's National ArmedForces and a large number oftroops from the regional AirForce Command have beendispatched to the border areasince Monday, boosting apermanent army presencethere, Defense MinisterHenry Rangel told Telesurtelevision.
"We are conducting veryspecific tasks to search forand find possible elements ofthe armed groups that havepenetrated the Venezuelanterritory," Rangel said.
Bogota had called onCaracas to take "effective"action against the rebels.
Rangel spoke ahead of ameeting of Venezuelan andColombian foreign ministersto discuss border security co-operation.
Any rebels found will facethe "iron hand" of Venezue-lan security forces, he said.
Acknowledging that thelong border of over 2,000 kilo-meters (1,240 miles) has histor-ically been "very permeable,"Rangel said that security "hasimproved," with the army con-solidating its presence.
Bogota in the past has ac-cused the leftist governmentof Venezuelan PresidentHugo Chavez of providingrefuge to Colombian guerril-las, but tensions between thetwo governments have easedunder Santos, who has culti-vated better relations withCaracas than his hard-linepredecessor Alvaro Uribe.
The FARC have steppedup attacks on Colombian se-curity forces over the pastyear in remote parts of thecountry.
In April, 15 soldiers werekilled in fighting in the south-ern department of Caqueta, while on March 11 other sol-diers were ambushed andkilled in the eastern depart-ment of Arauca, which alsoborders Venezuela.
The FARC is the country'soldest and largest insurgentgroup with about 9,200 menunder arms, according toColombian defense ministryestimates.

The website detailing the his-tory of Aruba, www.historia-diaruba.aw, has received anew page with more images. These are old images thatwere being shown in theatersback then.
The oldest films date backto the time of the SecondWorld War in 1942. That waswhen the Germans attackedthe Lago Refinery and shipswith a torpedo. You could seetankers on fire, holes in thetanks at Lago and the torpedothat washed up on the beachat Punto Brabo. During thedismantling of the torpedo, itexploded and killed 4 Dutchmarines.
There are also images ofthe day that Princes Julianatravelled from Canada tocome and visit Aruba. Amer-icans also came to Aruba totry and save the refinery.Right after the war a docu-mentary was prepared of thefuneral of Boy Ecury.
There are different presen-tations in the film of the royalvisits of Princes Beatrix andQueen Juliana and of theround table conference heldin 1954. This conference wasto discuss the new Statutes of
the islands of the Antilles. The pictures show the DutchQueen signing the document.
The film of the 70’s showsso many images. The PrimeMinister of Holland, DenUyhl also visited the islandand toured Tarabana and theSan Nicolaas Village. Thestruggle for the Status Apartewithin the Dutch Kingdomaccounted for many interest-ing images, among others, the ceremony of the inaugu-ration of our national anthemand flag in 1976, and the cov-
erage of Betico Croes in Hol-land, and Henny Eman’sspeech in the Island Counsel. There is also a report aboutthe problems that took placein Curacao in May 1969.
The series of recordingsconcludes with variousmovies shot by amateursshowing something of the lifeon Aruba during the 50’s andearly 60’s. In one scene, ahousewife is seen shoppingin the Main Street in SanNicolaas.
Other scenes show a bit ofCarnival leaving the CaribeClub and the end at the Wil-helmina Stadium. In stillfilming there is a scene witha family on their way tospend a day at the CaribbeanHotel which had recentlyopened.
All of these recorded filmscan be seen on the page of thehistorical films in the histori-cal website on Aruba,www.historiadiaruba.aw. Theentire project (website) wassponsored by SETAR.
In addition to the differentchapters about the history ofAruba, there are also highquality photos taken by adoctor in the Lago Refinery,Dr. Arthur Meiners, taken inthe 50’s, 60’s and 70’s.

The probability of a cruisevisitor returning to a destina-tion depends greatly upon thelevel of satisfaction experi-enced by the passenger, thebetter the experience the morelikely they are to return.Hence our interest in uncov-ering how pleased our visitorsactually are with our port, whether this influences theirdesire to return to Aruba andhow these visits impact the is-land’s economy. According toAlfonso Boekhoudt, Directorof the Aruba Ports Authority,“It is crucial that we are ableto measure these factors, theyare far more relevant to deter-mining whether or not our in-dustry is growing in the rightdirection than concluding thismerely by the quantity of pas-sengers on a visiting ship.”
To seek the answers tothese question and to studythe impression that our porthas on cruise passengers, stu-dents from the Faculty ofTourism at the University ofAruba, under guidance ofProfessor Dr. Ryan R. Peter-son, conducted a series of indepth interviews with visitingpassengers at our port in2011. The inquiries focusedprimarily on the calculationof the direct and indirect im-pact on the revenues pro-duced by port activities andthe direct and indirect effectson the island’s economy(mainly the center of our cityOranjesad).
We calculated the spend-ing patterns in specific areasof our economy, such as:food & beverage, commerce, transportation and others. Wewere able to identify the totalcontribution of the port on oureconomy which include di-rect and indirect factors.
We also identified experi-ential components that playan important role in our econ-omy such as:
a. The quality of ourport and its components
b. The quality of ourdestination and elements ofinfluence.

"Nothing in the data...suggests that economic con-ditions in the UK and Europeare easing against a backdropof policy paralysis across Eu-rope," CMC Markets analystMichael Hewson told AFP.
"Unless policymakerscome up with radical new so-lutions... they will soon befaced with the prospect of de-livering closer fiscal integra-tion or overseeing thebreakup of the euro," he said.
Kathy Lien, head of cur-rency research at GFT, saidthe European Central Bank"unfortunately... is just sittingon the sidelines waiting forthe heads of states in the re-gion to end their politicalgridlock."
"Europe, the euro and theworld for that matter desper-ately needs helps from the Eu-
ropean Central Bank who hasit within their power to stopthe EUR/USD from falling,"she said. "The next stop couldbe a six-year low of $1.20."
The latest US economicindicators were subdued, showing the tentative recov-ery remained on track despitehigh unemployment.
New claims for US unem-ployment benefits fell lastweek, signaling a slow stabi-lization in the pace of layoffs.
Big-ticket manufacturingrose in April, with durablegoods orders up a modest 0.2percent. Excluding the defensesector, they jumped 1.2 percent.
"There were no major up-side surprises but the modestdecline in jobless claims andthe rebound in durable goodsorders confirm that the USeconomy is recovering,"GFT's Lien said.
Against the Swiss cur-rency, the dollar rose to0.9584 francs from 0.9543late Wednesday.
The pound fell to $1.5668from $1.5689.

c. Satisfaction and loy-alty factors
The analysis of the portcompetitiveness suggests thatour cruise port enjoys a highrating compared to ports inthe region. Services such ascleanliness, friendliness ofport staff, and port safetygenerated a high score. Thestudy did reveal however thatthe impact of the port on thegeneral satisfaction level didnot have a primary role in in-fluencing the decision to re-turn to the destination.
Further analysis also re-vealed that the port’s totaleconomic impact on theeconomy of Aruba is aboutUS 150 million dollars. Theaverage spending per passen-ger on our island was aboutUS 170 dollars, which is asubstantial increase from thelatest figures published byour Central Bureau of Statis-tics in 2005 (US112.11 dol-
lars). Cruise tourism is an essen-
tial component of our tourismindustry. In addition to bene-fitting our country it has atremendous potential of con-tinuing to generate financialgains on a long term basis. Itis our intention that this studyhighlights the importance ofthe port as the primary pointof contact with the passengerupon disembarkation butmore importantly we want todraw attention to the revenuethat the cruise industry gener-ates for our island and howthat impacts the lives of ourpeople. On behalf of theAruba Ports Authority N.V.we thank the students of theUniversity of Aruba for a jobwell done during the inter-views.
