The Anchor Queen’s Harbour Official Community Newsletter

Just the Facts Ma’amBy Mike Maschmeyer, President

In the March issue of the Anchor Newsletter you read an excellent article on the controlled access function in Queen’s Harbour. The article was entitled “Controlled Access – What it is & What it is Not.” If you missed it I would suggest that you pull the March issue up (Anchor Newsletter March 1, 2021) and review it. It is filled with excellent information about our community.

The article was written, in part, as a response to questions addressed to the Board of Directors about actual and fictional incidences of crime in our community and the surrounding area. Crime is a fact of life in every geographic area of the globe. It is important for residents of Queen’s Harbour to be knowledgeable about factual evidence regarding crime in our community and the surrounding areas.

Here is a link to a presentation (formatted in pdf) that contains factual data and statistics about crime in Jacksonville and in our community. https://www.qhycc.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/QH-Crime-Statistics-and-Ratings-Website-PP-04.21.21.pdf

The statistics come from the following local, national and international information sources:• ESRI – (Environmental Research Systems Institute) is an international supplier of geographic information data, demographics

and statistics. ESRI, working with the FBI, collects all reported crime data from more than 16,000 national law enforcement districts, to provide current statistics on crime including precise locations of all reported incidences. https://www.esri.com/en-us/about/about-esri/overview

• JSO – The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Crime Mapping platform (https://www.jaxsheriff.org/Resources/crime-mapping.aspx). Crime Mapping (www.crimemapping.com) is employed by law enforcement agencies throughout North America to provide the public with valuable information about recent crime activity in all geographic areas and neighborhoods.

• Neighborhood Scout (www.neighborhoodscout.com) – Neighborhood Scout purports to provide the most comprehensive database of hyper-local real estate data available. It “uses its patented methodologies to build profiles that allow individuals or businesses to instantly find the best neighborhoods for them in any part of the United States that they choose.”

The slides in this presentation provide factual data related to crime in the City of Jacksonville, the Queen’s Harbour Yacht & Country Club community and other competing gated golf and country club communities. The factual data, as statistically interpreted by major demographers and JSO, indicates that Queen’s Harbour Yacht & Country Club currently has the best crime rating category of census tracts in Jacksonville, has minimal incidents of reported crime by comparison and is statistically rated by Neighborhood Scout, as the safest neighborhood in Jacksonville.

Many of us grew up with the television show DRAGNET. The star of the show, Jack Webb, the no-nonsense cop with Badge 714, was always pounding the pavement to search for the facts.

The Anchor Queen’s Harbour Official Community Newsletter

Dear residents and neighbors,

My name is Eralda Hausman and I am your newly elected Board Director responsible for Communications. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve on your board and lead a talented team for the next three years. The communications team responsibilities include the monthly newsletter, website and social media content, marketing, photography and welcoming new residents to the community. One consistent theme you will see from us this year is the incorporation of technology to provide readily accessible and streamlined communication.

Earlier this year, we transitioned our monthly newsletter, “The Anchor”, to a digital format which is easily accessible from any electronic device and has eliminated printing and mailing costs. Each issue highlights recent events, provides awareness of upcoming activities and shares general information relevant to the community. You have the option of printing the newsletter if you prefer to do so. We are always considering new content to include in upcoming issues. Please email us at [email protected] with any suggestions on topics for the newsletter.

Our social media presence has expanded to now include Instagram. If

you want to learn more about events, activities and all that Queen’s Harbour has to offer, please follow our Facebook and Instagram pages @QueensHarbour.

In the next few months, you will get the opportunity to be introduced to each Queen’s Harbour Board Director, their committees and vision for their area of responsibility. Committee members are the backbone of each director’s success. Their commitment and dedication are what makes our community stand out.

I am proud to introduce the Communications Committee members and excited for what we will accomplish in the year ahead.

GARDEN CLUB

Arbor Day Photos by Wayne Wright

On April 17 our garden club celebrated Arbor Day, gathering at the tree we had planted on Queen's Harbour Boulevard near the gatehouse. The Cassia, scientific name Senna pendula, will remain a small tree; butterflys love it. It blooms prolifically beginning in late summer and continuing through autumn and into winter, when most colorful landscaping has disappeared. We bought the Cassia through Yellowstone Landscape, our new Queen's Harbour vendor; many thanks to them for removing the decaying holly and for doing the hard work of planting. Wayne Wright, who always takes great pictures was there to help when we needed him to document the occasion – thank you!

We hope everyone enjoys watching the new Cassia grow.

Members, don’t forget to check our Facebook page. We have some beautiful photography

and interesting items posted by members. If you are a garden club member and need access to our

April Outing to the Cummer Gardens Photos by Judy Ellis On April 9 twelve members of the Queen's Harbour Garden Club had a delightful guided tour of the Cummer Gardens at the Cummer

Museum on the St. Johns in Riverside. The gardens have been refurbished since our last hurricane and are beautifully designed. The tour was followed by a delicious box lunch in the gardens. The weather was perfect -- what a beautiful day!

Don’t Settle for Good When Life Can Be Great!Great!

Don’t Settle for Good When Life Can Be Great!Great!

For many years the POA Board has received feedback and comments on the need in our community for family picnic and recreational areas. A few years ago, we set up several picnic tables and benches at the lock along with the kayak storage. This has become a great place for families to enjoy the beautiful views.

We wanted to take that same approach and develop a space at the front of our community. We already have several great entertaining options in and around the pool complex and wanted to develop something that would further add attraction and benefit to our community center. The goal was a place where residents could simply come and enjoy the space and our wonderful community. The Infrastructure and Amenities Committees worked together and found a great space adjacent to the POA office and the tennis courts. Prior, this space was simply a plant bed of jasmine. By removing the plants and installing the repurposed pavers from the bridge, we were able to transform a once unused space into a highlight of our community center. We further added to the project by installing outdoor string lighting as well as picnic tables and Adirondack seating. The area has all new landscaping and really accentuates the beautiful oak tree in the center.

If you or your family haven’t been up to the community center recently, we recommend that you stop by and enjoy the new space. It’s a beautiful new addition to our community, day or night. Whether it is a family picnic, watching a tennis match or one of our community events, it is truly a great new space that we hope all residents will come to enjoy!

HARBOUR SAILING CLUB

Youth Spring Sailing: Our fully subscribed Dolphin and Rascal program, led by John Tete and Matt Flynn, continues until May 13, and is successfully training our 6-13 year old youth in the art and sport of sailing. We appreciate the waves and smiles from our motor boat neighbors when they come up and down the thorough fare, past our happy Tuesday and Thursday afternoon sailors.

Youth Regatta:As young pianists have recitals, beginning sailors have their sailing regattas. At end of Spring program our youth, alternates and families travel to Saint Augustine Yacht Club for a Saturday, May 15 day of racing. With only 5 Optis and 16 youth in our Spring program, there will be competition for tiller time, but no one is left behind on a regatta day of making new friends and good fun.

Summer Camps: Club accepting reservations for our June Summer Camp memberships – weeks of June 7 and 14. If enough interest and coaching availability, we will expand to weeks of June 21 and July 12. Be certain to reserve either/best alternative for June, or for waiting list for late June/July. With response to Spring program, we encourage residents, guests to reserve promptly. We will contact and confirm.

Adult Saturday Family Sailing/Coach Training:We are half way through our combined March/April Saturday family sailing program, where we waive participant membership fees for potential that our youth sailing parents/residents will

continue to be active/accept our invitation to be assistant coaches. Opportunities continue. Let us know.

Adult Sailing Instruction:  To encourage adult sailors (16+) to learn and improve their talents as Sailing Instructors the

Club is, with Captain Jack Feeney’s leadership, creating a program leading to an advanced ‘Sailing

Coach Certification’ for our members and residents. This program, with US Sail training incentives for high school/

college resident youth, will also help Harbour Sailing expand its’ roster of youth/adult sailing coaches.

Member Sailing Seminar and Big Boat Sailing:  Saturday, May 15 Club will, at no cost for Club Members, be sponsoring a Captain Jack: 10 AM sailing seminar at QH, followed by an evening 5 PM 'big boat' sun-set sail on the St John’s. Eligible for club sailing members and sponsor members. Space limited for each of 3 2021 sunset sailings. Purpose: Encourage Club participation, advance sailing knowledge and, as fund raiser, assist club growth.

Volunteers Welcome: Youth (16+) and Adult Volunteers welcome to assist the Club in a variety of sailing and support roles as it expands both its’ youth and adult offerings. Interested in supporting a healthy youth and adult sailing program in Queen’s Harbour? Contact us.

First Mates was held at the lovely home of Gwen Gloeckner in April. We decided to repeat an activity we have done before. We know from past experience that this is a fun and advantageous activity – painting wine glasses! But more importantly, we had great fun being with our friends! Our attendance is increasing each month as people begin to feel more comfortable out in groups. Remember, if you are a member of the Queen's Harbour Yacht Club (and a female), you are automatically a First Mate! We have lots of fun activities planned for the yacht club, including a a boat trip to Mavi Waterfront Grill, the annual Commodores gala and monthly First Mates gatherings!

The Queen’s Harbour Garden Club makes its selection for the Yard of the Month during the last two weeks of the month. Criteria for the Yard of the Month are overall appearance and tidiness of the property as evidenced by:

• Color and aesthetic appeal from the curb• Variety of the plants used in the yard• Choice and use of plants

General appearance should give the lasting impression of good planning, care and effort.

The beautiful landscaped home of Robey and Gail Stewart,13688 Marsh Harbor Drive N., is the May Yard of the Month. Congratulations!
