HENRY MALLIN also known as Harry Mallin was born in Hoxton. As a boy Mallinjoined the Eton Manor Boys’Club, which was based on HackneyMarshes. He was successful at several sports, including rowing,football and cricket, but it was at amateur boxing that he excelled.He was coached by, among others, the Olympic lightweightchampion of 1908, Fred Grace, who was another Eton Manor oldboy. In his working life, Mallin started out as a storekeeper,

level he won the LondonCity police reserve competitions in 1915and 1916. Posted tothe Rosyth shipyard in
Scotland during theFirst World War, Mallin
suffered a serious leginjury that needed 73 stitches,
but fought his way back to fitnessto take the Amateur Boxing Association title at middleweight in1919. He boxed under the banner of the Metropolitan PoliceAthletic Club ‘E’ Division and held the ABA title for five consecutive years.
Mallin’s greatest triumphs in the ring were at the Olympic games.At Antwerp in August 1920 he beat the Canadian GeorgePrud'homme on points to take gold, having bested two Americans
and another Canadian on his way to the final. Mallin retained the Olympic title in controversial fashion at the 1924 game in Paris.

His quarter-final opponent, a local favourite named Roger Brousse,was dubiously judged to have won on points, despite Mallin havingshown the referee bite marks on his arm and chest left by theFrenchman during the bout.The decision was later overturned andBrousse disqualified. Mallin disposed of a Belgian boxer with someaplomb in the semi, to reach a final in which he out-pointed hisBritish team-mate Jack Eliot. Mallin injured his left hand in hisOlympic endeavours, however, and he was forced to retire fromboxing. He walked away from the sport undefeated in approximately350 amateur bouts.
In 1914 he joined the Metropolitan Police and was based successively in Tower Hamlets, Grays Inn Road and Bow Street. Hewas stationed at Peel House, 105 Regency Street, from 1923 until
at least 1939, during which time he won his record-breaking secondOlympic gold medal, in 1924.
Mallin managed the British boxing teams in the Olympic games of1936 and 1952, and achieved the distinction of delivering the firstever BBC radio sports commentary – on an England-Ireland boxing match at Alexandra Palace – in 1937. A lifelong bachelor,Mallin was allowed to continue with the Metropolitan Police pastthe normal retirement age in 1947, and finally left the force in 1952with the rank of sergeant-instructor, after 37 years’ service with‘exemplary’ conduct.
In retirement he retained strong links with amateur boxing and wasa life vice-president of the ABA, but in the final stage of his life hesuffered a stroke and the amputation of the leg he had injured yearsbefore. Harry Mallin died on 8th November 1969 in a Lewisham nursing home.

It was in 1972 that the 25-year-old Camilla Shand invited PrinceCharles back for coffee to her two-bedroom flat at Cundy Street’sStack House in the early hours after an evening at Annabel’s nightclub in Mayfair.

While the victim stood at traffic lights on Vauxhall Bridge Road outside Barclays Bank, the same woman came up and shoulderbarged the victim into the path of an oncoming bus.
Police footage shows the victim was thrown into the path of a bus.She hit the passenger doors and as she fell, suffering grazes andbruising to her ankles, shins and knees, a cut to the top of herhead and an injury to her shoulders.

THE SECRET GCHQ SPY BASEhas been revealed the anonymous office block on Palmer Streetopposite St James's Park Tube station. It has been its Londonbase for more than 65 years situated been a pub and Starbucks.
The organisation, known as Britain's listening post, has only nowbeen able to confirm the location, codenamed station UKC1000,after it moving out of the base, which has been sold.
The only visible clues that the four-storey building was of any significance were a few security cameras attached to its walls.
The office is near the Ministry of Justice, the Home Office,Scotland Yard and the Houses of Parliament. The Palmer Streethub has played its part in significant events over the years, suchas the 2012 London Olympics, working with MI6, MI5 and theMetropolitan Police to counter terrorist activities and serious andorganised crime.
GCHQ was established on November 1st 1919. During the SecondWorld War its personnel moved to Bletchley Park where theydecrypted German messages. In the 1950s, it moved its HQ fromEastcote to Cheltenham, meaning a suitable location was neededin the centre of the capital for the handling of secret paperwork andas a regular base for its director. After a search, the Ministry ofWorks provided a newly built, Government-leased building onPalmer Street. It moved into its London home in 1953,

damagedin WW2,leading toits demolition– the currentspiredatesfrom1994. Thebase ofthe spireis seatedon thetower,whichbears fourcrocketed
spirelets which survived, and between them, a niche on each sideenclosing a statue of saint.

Moss covers much of the old stone work having somehow survivedVictorian pollution and giving the church an air of being much olderthan its 160 years. The porch leads into the church, with a heavywooden door concealing a rather more utilitarian modern internalporch.
Despite the gothic inspired exterior, the inside looks almost austere by comparison. If thiswere truly a 14thcentury church onewould suspect thedestructive effects ofthe 17th century puritans, but thiswas built morerecently.
The small chapelnext to the mainchancel is stunning,and dates back tosome 50 years afterthe church was consecrated.
There is an aisled nave of 5 bays, and a long chancel. A smallsouth chapel, dedicated in 1904, was erected in memory of AngelaTennant, daughter of the first Vicar. This has an elaborate decoratedscheme of mosaics in the vaguely pre-Raphaelite style.
The church is open most lunchtimes until 2.00 pm, and they holdoccasional coffee concerts at lunchtime.

ST PETER’S CHURCHis to hold the May Fair on Saturday 11th May 2019. The churchhas held a fair every two years for many decades and this year’sproceeds will go towards building a permanent access ramp atthe front of the church to ensure all visitors can be warmly welcomed.
The May Fair brings together the whole community for an afternoon of fun and celebration. The church is cleared of pewsand stalls selling bric-a-brac, quality clothes, toys and books fillthe building.
Outside and in the Parish Hall will be many exciting stalls andactivities for children including: a visit from Vauxhall City Farm,arts & crafts, live music, bouncy castle, face painting, old schoolgames, visits from the local police and the local Fire Brigade witha Fire Engine for children to explore.There will also be a raffle, silent auction and tombola plus a barbecue, chilled Pimms and stalls selling fresh local produceand delicious cakes and food.There are a number of ways local people and businesses can get
involved:- sponsor a stall for £1,000 – we’re looking for stall sponsorship from local businesses for in particular: the children’sfarm, Pimms stall, wine and beer stall, raffle and children’s entertainment. Donate items to the silent auction and raffle –donations in previous years have included restaurant meals, cottagebreaks, fine wine and theatre tickets. Donate items for us to sell –books, good quality vintage or household items, good qualitychildren's toys can be brought to the welcome room at the front ofthe church.

However, there are deepconcerns in Brussels and other European capitals with regards topopulism, and the possible effects that this might have on theEuropean Parliament elections.Your columnist was recently in Dusseldorf, the capital of the giantNorth Rhine Westphalia region of Germany. This is the industrialheartland of Germany, and has always been a prosperous region.However, the mighty German economy is now flirting with recession, and there is growing unease about the multiple political threats that the country faces.
Angela Merkel, the ‘Mutti’ (mother) of Germany, is on her wayout. She has been broughtlow by her brave decision toadmit over one millionrefugees from the Syrianconflict. These migrants havenot assimilated in to Germaneconomic or cultural life,and their arrival has poisoned relations betweenBerlin and the powerfulLander – the sixteen statesthat make up the FederalRepublic. It has also fueledthe rise of the hard right, inthe form of the AFD.
Germany’s woes are reflectedin other EU member states. Economies cannot shake off the stultifying effect of the single currency, and the ongoing migrant crisis has caused open rebellion, not least amongst the VisigradGroup of Central European states. This has led to an alarmingrise in the profile and vote share of far-right parties throughoutthe EU, which will almost certainly be reflected in the make-up ofthe European Parliament.Only Emmanuel Macron seems to be capable of rising, Jupiter-like, above this populist tide. So far he has faced down the challenge of the persistent - and often violent - gilets jaunes protestors. Only he seems to have a vision for Europe, and whenAngela Merkel departs from the scene he will have a strong claimto the leadership of the EU.And that is not good news for the UK. Most member states valuenot just the UK’s massive budget contribution, but also its consistent arguments in favour of free trade and light touch regulation. Macron however, sees the UK’s prospective departureas a double opportunity. Firstly, to secure the relocation of sub-stantial parts of the City of London’s financial services industry toParis: and secondly to ensure that the French vision of a regulated protectionist EU prevails.

On Thursday 21st March, St Andrew’s welcomed over 100 gueststo the Club for the annual President’s Reception. The eveningmarked the official handover of presidency from Lord Selborne toLord Strathclyde. Lord Selborne returned to being Vice President,thus maintaining a continuity of marvellous involvement in StAndrew’s Club by the Selborne family, since the Club’s earliestbeginnings.
Highlights of the year were outlined by the Club Chairman,Elizabeth Cuffy, which included the award of the Silver LevelLondon Youth Quality Mark and the achievement of Ski instructorqualifications for three of our members through our partnershipwith the charity Snow-Camp.
The Lord Mayor of Westminster, Cllr Lindsey Hall attended the cel-ebrations and gave a speech, emphasising the importance of theexistence of St Andrew’s: “St Andrew’s Club is such a triumph –and continues to live up to its long and proud reputation. Its pur-pose, support and distraction embodies all the good work neededto help the mental health and wellbeing of our local young people– my particular passion ”.
The reception was a huge success, with over £420 being raisedfrom the raffle. These funds will truly make a difference to theyoung people who come to St Andrew’s every day. Thank you toeveryone who joined the occasion.
