A Word of Thanks From the Fulton Preschool

A huge thank you to the Presbyterian Church and all it's members for the unbelievable amount of energy, planning, and work that went into the Book Fair and Literacy Night. The benefit received by the preschool from this event has far-reaching results. One of the many great (!) books purchased for the preschool was titled: 'What Does It Mean To Be Kind?'

This book was purchased at just the right time! Kindness is a trait we had been working on. I read this book to my class within days of receiving it. I was amazed at the immediate impact it made on the children. The manners and care they have for each other is wonderful to see. They stop and check to see if their friend is okay if they have fallen, they make sure everyone is included in what they're doing. These are just a couple of the many little things they have started doing each day. Thank you for helping our children grow and become more caring individuals.

Sincerely, Sandy McDaniel

Ryan's Case for Smiles

Thank you for all who participated in First Presbyterian Church's 2018 Annual Ecumenical Ryan's Case for Smiles pillowcase making event. Thanks to a very generous donation from The Matt Taylor Family of Columbia, our church member Debbie Calder and her mother, Mary, were able to purchase fabric and make 74 pillowcase smiles! Also special appreciation goes to Sara Hoell who made a generous donation of children's fabrics.

These bright and whimsical pillowcases will bring cheer to children in our area hospitals. The event was well attended by 19 hard-working volunteers. Our official count this year is 216 pillowcases -- which tops all of our previous six years.

CHARITY SHARITY

Special guests from St. Louis' non-profit "Charity Sharity" spoke to our group of 24 about their mission and shared many project ideas accomplished with fabrics and other sewing notions that have passed through their organization without any exchange of money. The day also offered as collection point for Charity Sharity donations.

Dear Friends in Christ, Throughout this Easter season, we remember that in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we have been given both the invaluable gift of our shared inheritance of the kingdom of God and along with it, the tremendous obligation to welcome all people to come and receive God’s grace for themselves. This work of spreading the Gospel may be defined as Evangelism. While there is no end to the ways in which we might describe the role of the Evangelist, one of characterization that I have returned to time and again it that of the Church as Christ’s “marketing team.” Jesus has presented us with eternal salvation—a “product” that is desired above all others, beyond the means of any to purchase for themselves, and yet freely given by its only “manufacturer.” It seems like salvation should “sell” itself.

And yet, we often struggle to get the word out. At times, when I have felt discouraged by my own efforts to evangelize, I’ve attempted to glean some clarity from those who have faced the challenge of marketing much more challenging products. One of my favorite examples comes from AT&T.

In 1979, N. W. Ayer & Son (AT&T’s principal advertising agency since 1908) was tasked with overcoming the consumer perspective that the cost of making long-distance calls was a luxury that was hard to justify when the bill came due at the end of the month. In response, the advertisers created a campaign that shifted the emphasis away from thinking about the cost of making a long distance and instead, focused on the feeling of being connected with your loved ones who are far away. From this campaign, there came a slogan that remains one of the most successful taglines in the history of advertising: “Reach out and touch someone.” Tony Galli, who coined the slogan, had begun with a more lengthy phrase: “To communicate is the beginning of understanding. Reach out and touch someone.”

As I think about what Mr. Galli said, I am reminded that Jesus took this approach with those to whom he desired to communicate his message of repentance and belief. In order to help them understand why he had come into the world, Jesus worked through touch. In Scripture, we read that the touch of Jesus enables the deaf to hear (Mark 7:31-37) and the blind to see (Mark 8:22-26). With the simple touch of Jesus’ clothes, a woman who had suffered from hemorrhages for twelve years is made well (Mark 5:25-34). As word of spreads, people bring their children to Jesus, so that he might lay hands upon them and bless them (Mark 10:13-16). And following the resurrection, Jesus welcomes his own disciples to touch him, so that they might believe that their Lord is fully risen. (Luke 24:36-49). Jesus knows that, of all the many ways there are to communicate his message, touch is among the most powerful.

There are many ways that our congregation continues the work of Jesus, reaching out and offering that powerful, healing touch in the lives of others. This month, I want to introduce you to one of our newest efforts. In the lobby, just outside the Fellowship Hall, you’ll find on one of the bulletin boards the pictures of some of the members of the Armed Forces who have family connections to our congregation. Along with their pictures, you’ll see addresses where they may be reached. I want to urge you to share in the work of contacting these women and men. Please let them know that their service is valued and that they are in your prayers. In advance of your participation, I want to express my appreciation. Together, we have the power to be the loving, supportive presence of Christ in the lives of each one of these individuals.

In conclusion, dear Brothers and Sisters, I hope that you continue to feel the “touch” of Jesus through your participation in the life of our congregation. I also want you to know how thankful I am for your participation in the mission life of our church, as it enables our congregation to extend the reach of Christ into the lives of others. May God continue to bless us with hands to “reach out and touch someone” who is waiting to receive the Gospel. As we offer this Good News, may we take time to understand the need for healing that is particular to each individual, and may we rightly communicate to them the gift of salvation to them that is communicated to them through the grace of Christ, the love of God, and the alighting presence of the Holy Spirit.

Grace & Peace,

Aaron J. White

2018 PENTECOST OFFERING

Our church has participated in two of the four PCUSA special offerings for many years. We are all familiar with the Christmas Joy Offering which occurs during Advent, this offering supports past, present, and future church leaders. One Great Hour of Sharing is another familiar offering to this congregation. This Lent to Easter giving opportunity enables the church to share God’s love with our neighbors-in-need around the world by providing relief to those affected by natural disasters, provide food to the hungry, and helping to empower the poor and oppressed. More recently, we have participated in the Peace & Global Witness Offering. This offering runs from Labor Day to World Communion Sunday and enables the church to promote the Peace of Christ by addressing systems of injustice across the world. This year we are encouraging giving to the Pentecost Offering. Each year on Pentecost Sunday, we celebrate the arrival of the Holy Spirit as a bringer of new life with an Offering that nurtures the faith of children, youth, and young adults. As one of four Special Offerings of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), the Pentecost Offering unites us in a church-wide effort to support young people in Christ and inspire them to share their faith, ideas, and unique gifts with the church and the world. 40% will stay in the congregation and be used to support SERVE’s Back-to-school event. 25% supports Young Adult Volunteers (YAV), serving in communities around the world, and growing as leaders through transformative Christian service. 25% supports Ministries with Youth to help guide our youth by uniting them in Christ and lifting them up as leaders and messengers of God’s word 10% is devoted to children at-risk to improve education and provide safe havens. Please give generously, in this, the denomination’s 20th Anniversary Year of building lives of faith, of building the church of the future and our congregation’s first.
