OPEN CAR SHOW MARK YOUR CALENDAR!

The annual open car show will be held at the August 2 alumni luncheon. You are invited to bring your hot rod classic, antique or any nice ride. September 6 is scheduled for the rain date. if You have any questions, contact Vince Kertes ‘64 at 574.315.0319.

WE HEAR YOU! NO ENTERTAINMENT FOR JUNE!

Each month at the alumni luncheons there is a survey form alums can take and fill out to express to the board what they would like. Over the past year these surveys have been collected and summarized. One of the comments made over and over is that alums just want the chance to socialize and not necessarily need to have the entertainment. So.... let’s give it a try! For the June luncheon the only entertainment will be YOU! You will have the entire time to lunch with your friends and mix and mingle with other alums. There will be more time to catch up with your classmates and meet alums from other classes.

Be sure to let the board know how it works out - maybe the format can be offered again!

Secondo “Conte” Candoli ‘54 cont’d from pg 1

His playing brought him performing and recording opportunities with top names in show business, such as Gerry Mulligan, Shelly Manne, Terry Gibbs, Teddy Edwards, Bing Crosby, Sammy Davis Jr., and Sarah Vaughan. He has appeared in many motion pictures with various orchestras and worked in all of Frank Sinatra’s TV specials.

Candoli was inducted into The International Jazz Hall of Fame in 1997. He died of prostate cancer at the age of 74, in Palm Desert, California.

On Tuesday, May 9, the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County will host a 24-hour giving event.

Every dollar donated on May 9 will be increased by a share of more than $2 million in matching funds provided by our generous Give Local St. Joseph County sponsors.

Because the primary mission at the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County is to build permanent resources for the community, Give Local St. Joseph County is designed to support local charities now and from now on. How? By passing through 75% of net dollars raised for each charity to support current programming, and by placing the other 25%—plus generous matching funds into MEF’s permanent endowment, increasing the annual support it receives year after year.

HOW CAN YOU PARTICIPATE?

On May 9, 2017, you can make online donations of $25 or more to Mishawaka Education Foundation (MEF)@ GiveLocalSJC.org using your phone, tablet, or computer. The online leader board will show you—in real time—how many dollars your favorite MEF is raising on May 9.

We’ll also have a “preview period” that begins on Monday, May 1, 2017. You can use that time to:•schedule your gift in advance at GiveLocalSJC.org•mail or drop off a check to the Community Foundation, with MEF in the “Memo” line of your check or on an attached form (this is important)•initiate gifts of stock•make transfers directly from an IRA (for donors who are over age 70-1/2)•recommend a grant from your donor-advised fund with the Community Foundation

If you need assistance with any of these options, please contact the Community Foundation at (574) 232-0041.

Its YOUR day to make a BIG impact for the MEF!

ATTENTION ALUMNI!

CLASS OF 19xx GAVE GENEROUSLY TO THE

MISHAWAKA EDUCATION FOUNDATION

Make your class stand out! The class that donates the most will be recognized with a permanent brick paver displayed in the Alumni Pavilion at Mishawaka High School.

Class of ‘56 can you beat Class of ‘55 or ‘57?

Class of ‘57 can you beat Class of ‘67 or ‘77?

You get the picture. Help MEF raise the much needed funds to support the Mishawaka Promise. Your donation will be matched by the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County!

Be sure to include your class year when making your donation!

CORRECTIONS

In the April issue under the Celebrations section Fran Cook’s son-in-law’s last name was spelled wrong. His name is Rich Sparks.

Under “New Members” Kim E. Egendoerfer, Sr. was listed as a ‘72 grad but is actually a ‘73 alum.

In the March issue under the Veteran Alumni section Jim Cripe’s service information was entered incorrectly. It should read: Jim Cripe ‘50, US Marine Corp., PFC 12-11-51 to 12-1-53.

I apologize for any errors or omissions.

THE APPEARANCEsubmitted by Sarah (Lutz) Grise ‘55

I woke up one morning and look in the mirror,To find something strange reflecting there.

It wasn’t there yesterday and to my surprise,It had grown so much larger and doubled in size.

The head hairs are white and more than I care,It was black as pitch and the only one there.

Yep!! There it is so long, soft and thin--A hair growing out of my chinny, chin, chin!!

Sarah has had several of her poems published in The Tampa Ledger, a daily newspaper that serves Lakeland, Florida and the Polk County area.
