CLUTTER CONTROL - DOWNSIZING YOUR STUFF WITH DAVE DOWNS
We all have STUFF! What happens when our stuff starts to own us? Why can’t we just throw things away?
With his upbeat & unique approach, Dave Downs explores the many reasons that our drawers, closets & garages get filled with excess STUFF. With Downs’ helpful hints for managing this difficult problem, participants will leave knowing that if we are thoughtful about what we acquire, what we keep and what we discard, we will start to reverse the tendency to bury ourselves in “treasures!”
WEDNESDAY, MAY 17TH AT 12:30 PM
No cost for this informative program, but please call to reserve your seat. 413-565-4150

“A Man Called Charles” by Patricia Burden
His name is Charles, as he prefers to be called, and everyone knows him. He is a man on the move and always has been! He routinely maneuvers through the Longmeadow Adult Center five
days a week with dedication and enthusiasm and always with a smile.
Regularly socializing is an important aspect of his daily visit and he has developed some lifetime friendships. He checks out the daily luncheon menu…perhaps even a stay for lunch. Picks up the morning newspaper and examines the Voice to keep abreast of day’s activities, walks the lengthy corridor and hops on the stationery bicycle in the game room for his daily 4 mile
ride. Charles Hamlin is a man on the move!
Riding the bike provides time to reminisce. These cherished moments he shares with us. Born more than 95 years ago in Gorham, NH, he values his parental love, Christian upbringing , healthy lifestyle and being one with the mountains. He has climbed Mount Washington and Tuckerman’s Ravine too many times to recall. Hiking, skiing Pine Mountain, swimming in surrounding lakes, loving the trees and of course, working in his father’s grocery store helped
strengthened the energy and nurture the character of Charles.
He spent 3 years at Bates College in Maine before enlisting in the Navy in 1942 during WWII. Patriotism runs deep in the family as his father served in WWI and grandfather (whose uncle was Hanibal Hamlin, Lincoln’s Vice President) was a soldier in the Civil War. Charles was ranked a Quarter Master and as helmsman, his duties included watching for submarine torpedoes and periscopes. He was assigned to the lead ship USS Pillsbury as Escort for 6 ships. Theirs was a clandestine assignment. With a Commodore as well as a Captain on board, the intent was not to sink but to damage and ultimately capture a German submarine. None has ever been captured and deciphering invaluable codes and contraband became what TIME magazine coined as the best kept secret of the war. For their efforts, Charles and his
shipmates received the coveted “Presidential Unit Citation.”
He recalls meeting Kathryn and moving pretty well on the dance floor at the Shelborne Dance Pavilion in New Hampshire. After one dance, he was hers. At the war’s conclusion, it was back to Bates College to graduate and after five years of courtship, “Kath” became his wife. Perhaps it was his love of the grocery business that prompted a lifetime career with the Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company. He rose through the ranks of the A & P Supermarkets to being named Director of Personnel of the Northeast Region, moving from New Hampshire to Maine to Massachusetts,
eventually settling in Longmeadow in 1970.
As Charles pedals he remembers his long journey at the adult center since 1970. He says he participated in a variety of roles. Today, as he sees the volunteers passing by the window carrying prepared luncheon meals for seniors, he recollects delivering them as well, yet at any rate “not for him!” Today he enjoys his daily bike ride of course, as well as, Saul Finestone’s Journey to Jazz sessions, Chair Exercise on Tuesday and Thursdays (until the standing part which he finds difficult due to a back injury), Trivia, once in a while. Again, it is the socializing that counts. And he loves the staff
and thinks they are “wonderful.”
But there is more to Charles when it comes to moving around. His day is not complete until he visits, picks a shopping carriage and walks the aisles at the Longmeadow Big Y Supermarket two times daily, in the morning and in the afternoon. He walks the aisles as he probably did many times in his professional life. He knows all of the Big Y staff, meets up with Saul from time to time, buys a few manageable groceries. In the evening, there is time for Jeopardy and working newspaper cryptograms, viewing local weather and news, major networks and PBS. “You’ve got to stay informed and mentally alert!” Both of his sons, Richard and Jeff, live locally and visit often. And of course, he attends
church every Sunday.
Charles leaves us with some keen food for thought: “Stay healthy and just keep moving spiritually, physically, mentally!” Charles, the Longmeadow Adult Center knows that you are a moving inspiration to all of us. Thanks for
sharing your memories.

Shingles Vaccines Available (Limited)
The Longmeadow Board of Health has been able to secure a one-time allocation of twenty (20) doses of free Shingles (Zostavax) vaccine from the Mass. Dept. of Public Health. This vaccine is highly recommended for individuals sixty years of age or older. This vaccine is not fully reimbursable by prescriptive drug plans that complement Medicare or by Medicare Advantage (HMO’s) Plans; the out-of-pocket charge for this vaccine is commonly $100-200/shot at local commercial pharmacies or physician’s offices. For residents who have been facing a financial barrier to vaccination, this is a unique
opportunity to be vaccinated at a reasonable cost.
The Board of Health is now taking reservations from Longmeadow residents for these twenty doses of vaccine on a first-come, first-serve basis. The fee for this vaccination is
$15.00.
Kindly call Carol Steiner, R.N., Public Health Nurse (565-4154) to reserve a dose of vaccine and to set up an appointment for its administration. If you leave a telephone message, kindly provide your name, address, telephone number, and date of birth. Carol will return your call to confirm receipt of your
reservation.
Please be advised that the shingles shot will not be
administered without the following documentation.
Government issued I.D. or copy of (e.g. driver’s license)
A written note from your personal physician indicating that you are medically eligible to receive
this vaccine and have no contra-indications
Should you have any specific questions regarding the shingles vaccine, kindly contact Carol Steiner, R.N. or stop by the Health
Office at the Longmeadow Adult Center.

OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES & RESOURCES
MEDICAL ORDERS FOR LIFE SUSTAINING
TREATMENT (MOLST) FORMS
Join Marci Kelly on Wednesday March 24, at 10AM to
learn about the MOLST form and if it is appropriate
for you.
You may be familiar with many of the medical
documents needed as we age, including health care
proxies and living wills, but in 2014, the MA
Department of Public Health took on a new project,
the MOLST forms. These differ from other more
commonly known documents, because unlike the
health care proxy and living will, which are both legal
documents, the MOLST form is considered a medical
Document.
Aging Together Wednesday, May 31, 12:30 PM
Following an excellent full-day workshop with 40+ seniors on 10 talking points of healthy
aging, we will review in more detail these 10 topics during the next 10 Aging together
sessions. To begin we will start with “Creating Joy and Satisfaction”. This will focus on the
importance of ensuring that you have time for fun in your schedule. We would welcome your ideas on what you
do, and how you continue to find a reason to laugh when life may be changing for you in ways that aren’t
always fun. For a complete list of topics please visit: http://www.mentalhealthamerica.net/live-your-life-well
Office Reception Volunteers
The Longmeadow Adult Center, is creating a new
volunteer position to work in the office as a receptionist.
This position will assist the office with various needs
from entering statistics, taking phone calls, to directing
patrons of the center to the appropriate location within
the building.
At this time we are most in need for volunteer
receptionists on Wednesdays and Fridays. The office
would be looking for a volunteer who is available
weekly for 3-4 hours. The office is lively and fun.
For more information, and specific details about the
position, please call 413-565-4150 and ask for Mike.
RMV NEAR ME Please know that April is a busy month for the Registry of Motor Vehicles. With April school vacation week, April 18-21, fast approaching our RMV service centers will be filled with increased traffic for permits and road tests. This “April rush” is particularly busy because the online renewal options will not be available for an increased
