www.zonta-harrisburghershey.org May 2017 Greetings from the President: I want to take this opportunity to thank ALL the members of the Zonta Club of Harrisburg-Hershey for their outstanding donation of time and talents throughout the past club year – September 2016-May 2017. The financial outcome from our previous year has exceeded our Projected Service Budget and our expectations! The May meeting is going to be exhilarating as we watch our service dollars being presented to Shalom House and to the winner of our YWPA Scholarship, Natalie Souders. I wonder how many individuals will be helped by the fund raising projects we have completed this past year. We may never know the exact number but if we take a few minutes to just think about what fund-raising projects we have completed we all know that those funds will help scholarship winners, Shalom House residents, and Zonta International. We are just one of the 1200 Zonta clubs that support ZI in its goal of committing millions of dollars to projects to help empower women and girls around the globe. The money we send to Zonta International will help girls delay early marriage and assist with the girls program, “Let Us Learn Madagascar” to name just a few. When thinking about our Club’s success, I always picture the special women in our Club and their giving spirit and dedication to Zonta. Remember the Christmas tree surrounded with gifts for the Shalom House Residents, the pile of purses we donated to Salon Platinum to help Domestic Violence Services of Cumberland/Perry County, and the coats we donated to Bethesda Mission for Women? Our spirt and enthusiasm continued throughout this past year with the “Zonta Says No Rally” and the heartwarming reception we received when we met with the wives of the students enrolled in the International Fellows Program at Carlisle. I never thought that I would be in a picture between a woman from Mongolia and one from Tunisia! I look forward to seeing ALL of the Club members and guests at the May meeting as we continue our giving spirit and enthusiasm for Zonta! Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers and all those who take on the role of a mother in someone’s life. Greetings from the President:

I want to take this opportunity to thank ALL the members of the Zonta Club of

Harrisburg-Hershey for their outstanding donation of time and talents throughout

the past club year – September 2016-May 2017. The financial outcome from our

previous year has exceeded our Projected Service Budget and our expectations! The

May meeting is going to be exhilarating as we watch our service dollars being

presented to Shalom House and to the winner of our YWPA Scholarship, Natalie

Souders.

I wonder how many individuals will be helped by the fund raising projects we have

completed this past year. We may never know the exact number but if we take a

few minutes to just think about what fund-raising projects we have completed we all

know that those funds will help scholarship winners, Shalom House residents, and

Zonta International. We are just one of the 1200 Zonta clubs that support ZI in its

goal of committing millions of dollars to projects to help empower women and girls around the globe. The money we

send to Zonta International will help girls delay early marriage and assist with the girls program, “Let Us Learn

Madagascar” to name just a few.

When thinking about our Club’s success, I always picture the special women in our Club and their giving spirit and

dedication to Zonta. Remember the Christmas tree surrounded with gifts for the Shalom House Residents, the pile of

purses we donated to Salon Platinum to help Domestic Violence Services of Cumberland/Perry County, and the coats we

donated to Bethesda Mission for Women? Our spirt and enthusiasm continued throughout this past year with the

“Zonta Says No Rally” and the heartwarming reception we received when we met with the wives of the students

enrolled in the International Fellows Program at Carlisle. I never thought that I would be in a picture between a woman

from Mongolia and one from Tunisia!

I look forward to seeing ALL of the Club members and guests at the May meeting as we continue our giving spirit and

enthusiasm for Zonta!

Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers and all those who take on the role of a mother in someone’s life.

Young Women in Public Affairs winner Natalie Souders:

Below is a brief biography on our winner. She and her Mother

will be joining us for the May meeting.

Natalie Souders attended Middletown Area High School,

where she was involved with the Youth & Government

program, and volunteered with the middle school theatre

program. Upon receiving a full scholarship, she spent her

junior year studying abroad at a French high school.

She is a 19-year-old sophomore at Lewis & Clark College.

Natalie is seeking a degree in International Affairs, with a

minor in Middle East Studies. Natalie has studied 5 languages

so far: English, Spanish, French, Mandarin, and Arabic. On

campus, Natalie is involved with student government, working to change Title IX policy this

year, and she was elected Chief Justice for the next school year. Her other on-campus

activities include commitments to the Feminist Student Union, the Queer Student Union,

Model United Nations, the Constitutional Affairs Committee, and the Student Health Advisory

Board. Next spring, Natalie will study abroad in Dakar, Senegal, where she will study Wolof

(the local language), post-colonial politics, grassroots movements, West African oral

literature, the history of Islam in Senegal, conduct a field study about gender in development,

and more. The program will be entirely conducted in French.

In Memory of Norma Gotwalt

It is with sadness that we recognize the passing of our Club’s first

president Norma Gotwalt on March 19, 2017. According to Mary Ann

Mihok, “Norma served as the 1st President of the Harrisburg-Hershey

Club from 1980-1982. The formation of the Harrisburg-Hershey Club

was initiated in 1979 by Augusta (Gusty) Gale who was Suzanne Gale's

mother. Gusty contacted two of us who were former Zontians from

other cities (Virginia Ames and myself) and also Norma Gotwalt to

work with her to get the club organized. Twenty-eight women were

recruited for the club and we received our charter from Zonta

International on March 11, 1980. Our Chartering Ceremony was held on

May 31, 1980. Norma set high standards for herself and for our club

which are still reflected in our processes and procedures to this day.”

Zonta Partner

May Service Project – I am asking each Club member to please bring one spring/summer fun top to

the May meeting to be donated to a woman living at Shalom House. Below are the size requests that

I received from Denise Britton. The sizes also include children if you would prefer to bring a clothing

donation for a child. I am not trying to make this project as BIG as Christmas – I just wanted to do one

more thing for the residents of Shalom House before the end of our club year. I will bring gift bags,

tissue paper, and labels to place the size on each bag if you do not have time to complete your

wrapping. Thank you for your generosity.

Children:

Boy - Size 7/8

Girl - Size 12 – 14

Boys - Size L (Husky) - would suggest casual shirt or tee shirts

Summing up Your Year of Service

Every year our Club submits reports to the District 3 Board that provide details on programs/projects we

have held throughout our Zonta Year (June 1 – May 31). These reports are used to share ideas with other

Zonta Clubs and to determine which Clubs receive recognition/awards at the District 3 Fall Conference.

In several reports we are asked to report our service hours in three possible ways, i.e.,

General Service Hours are hours spent on the following activities:

Planning/preparing or presenting a Club Program __________

Preparation for and Attending Board Meetings __________

Creating/writing articles/editing the Monthly Newsletter ___________

Shopping for supplies for a Club Program or Club Donation ___________

(September and December meetings)

Posting notices on Facebook ___________

Supporting Shalom House programs or fund raisers ___________

Wrapping holiday gifts for Shalom House at Colonial Park Mall ___________

Participation in IFP Program at Carlisle Barracks ___________

Serving on Committees: Scholarship, “Just Say No”, Grant Committee ___________

Coordinating reservations with the Radisson ________________

Fund Raising Hours

Parking Cars ______________

Selling BonTon Coupons ______________

Selling/Delivering Wreaths ______________

“Hands On” Service Hours

Presenting a program at Shalom House ___________

Delivering roses to Shalom House on March 11 ___________

Thank you in advance for your response. I know it’s sometimes hard to figure out where to put your hours….do your

best. Please forward your service hours report to President Nancy Fodor at [email protected] or bring it to the

May meeting. We have to submit our District Reports in June.
