You know, like trying a new recipe or actually putting into the ground those plants that were bought last week. Or even better do you have time to do the things you need to do? These are the things we sometimes avoid like those dishes may be able to wash themselves in a dishwasher but won’t unload themselves; or Aunt Rosie is still waiting for that visit that was promised a few weeks ago and has not happened yet. I’ve said that time is my most precious resource. If I could I would be willing to buy some more. Coupled with the idea of never seeming to having enough time is that the more years I experience, the faster time seems to go. I was just looking at yesterday thinking it was tomorrow, and then I blinked. And what about the time needed to respond to what God asks me to do, calls me to? Somehow that needs to fit into my already bursting-at-the-seams schedule. When I take time to recognize I’ve been neglecting those duties, I realize they are the most important things I need to do and want to do, in the long run. How do I find time for all of it? Recently I read that it takes discipline in order to fully realize the gifts God has given us. If we are not disciplined, we allow all the things of this world the things we want to do and the things we think we need to do to take precedence over what God has already given us the tools for. It amazes me how many times I have to think about how I’ve widened my path from the narrow one that God would have me be walking on. To get re-centered, I have to make time to spend in His presence, confessing my waywardness, and asking for His will to be done in my life. Despite my continual waywardness, I do have a little bit of discipline going on. Almost every morning, I spend time in organized devotion: reading, praying, and journaling. I also try to spend some time where I leave myself open to hear from God. Most mornings I ask for Him to prioritize my day for me so that I can get done what needs to happen that day without stressing over what I can’t get to because I don’t have time to do it all. A second bit of discipline I started this year is to do what I call “taking the Sabbath.” I do not do any work that relates to my paid employment as a college instructor on Sundays. This has freed me up to have time to rest and to be thankful that I am able to do so. There are just so many choices. I ask for guidance to make the right ones. The Good News Crossroads District

President’s Message

Do you have enough time to do all the things you want to do? These are the fun things we enjoy doing. You know, like trying a new recipe or actually putting into the ground those plants that were bought last week. Or even better – do you have time to do the things you need to do?

If we are not disciplined, we allow all the things of this world – the things we want to do and the things we think we need to do – to take precedence over what God has already given us the tools for.

New Secretary of Program

Resources

Susan Southard has accepted the call and challenge of becoming our District Secretary of Program Resources for the remainder of 2016. She had been on the District Committee on Nominations but felt she wanted to try this new role. Under the tutelage of Kathy Hunt, Susan will be a resource to all units in the District and have Program Resources available for us at our District Annual Meeting, which will be held on September 10th at the First United Methodist Church in Victoria.

Ana M. Jarvis was devoted to her mother, Mrs. Ana Reese Jarvis. Mrs. Jarvis was the daughter of a pastor and had taught in a Methodist Sunday school

in Grafton, West Virginia. She died in 1905. Two years later, the Sunday school superintendent of her congregation asked Ana to help him arrange a memorial for the woman who had been so influential in that church. This had Ana thinking. It seemed to her that children often do not do enough to show their moms that they appreciate them while they are still alive.

The Grafton church held its special service on the second Sunday of May, 1907, the anniversary of Mrs. Jarvis' death. The following year, Ana convinced her own church in Philadelphia to hold a Mother’s Day service on May 10, 1908. After that, Ana wrote thousands of letters and held many interviews to promote a national Mother's Day. She enlisted friends behind her effort too. It took them six years, but in the end they succeeded. On May 8, 1914, both houses of the United States Congress passed resolutions establishing a Mother's Day observance.
