Commander’s Corner
Dear Legion Family,
As I write this letter to you, I have been ordered to be on complete bedrest by my
physician and my nurse/wife. Stressful situations have occurred from several
different areas and they have caught up with me.
I was told that I was on the verge of having a stroke. To prevent this I am
adhering to my physician's advice - bed rest, no stress, no phone calls;I am to
return to my doctor's office on Monday for further evaluation. My wife,Pat,has
been taking good care of me and receiving my phone calls and messages.
Will keep you updated. I thank everyone for messages of thoughts and
prayers. Please keep my brother,Robert, in your prayers; he is not doing well after
open heart surgery. As you know, the history of my family the last couple of years
has not been good.
It's difficult not to think about my responsibilities as your Commander. I am
forced to realize that I am not a 21 year old young Ranger anymore.
I thank each and everyone of you for all you do for the Legion and all of our
programs.
Membership is always on my mind. Our goal deadline is close by; please do
what you can to meet our goal.
Continue the Alabama Spirit
God Bless You, Thanks for allowing me to serve you.
David L. Hartline,State Commander
Department of Alabama
ADJUTANT’S ALLEY
Legionnaires we are growing close to the end of the year. Please keep Commander Hartline in your
thoughts and prayers as he is having some health issues. While we begin thinking about all our summer projects let
us focus on convention. This year we have identified some short comings in knowledge and experience so hopefully
all the training sessions will be helpful. Please if you have the time to attend come join us in our training sessions.
We will also be conducting our elections and some changes to the Constitution and Bylaws (should have those in
the mail shortly). Consider all your candidates and ensure your delegates are carrying out the will of the post.
Memorial Day is approaching quickly. If you need flags, banners, or decorations please don’t forget about
The American Legion Emblem Sales. Make time to remember our fallen heroes of all branches. Honor them,
remember them, and hold their sacrifices close to your heart. With the well-known saying “Two men who gave
their lives for freedom, Jesus Christ and The American Soldier”. For God and Country, we associate ourselves
TOGETHER! It is the power of the veteran bonded together not apart that allows us to live our lives and pursue
happiness.
We have recently started our Junior Shooting Sports for the Department. If you’d like to enquire on how to
start a team, please contact Anthony Kissik at (334) 202-2812. This is a very inexpensive program to maintain.
Younger vets are flocking by the handful in Departments that have this program. It is a direct feeder program for
the Olympics and high level scholarships.
NO VETERAN LEFT BEHIND!

FROM THE DESK OF SENIOR VICE COMMANDER JIM JEFFRIES
FROM THE DESK OF SENIOR VICE COMMANDER JIM JEFFRIES The American Legion Family, The following paragraph is an excerpt from the Officer’s Guide. Volunteerism is a core value of The American Legion and as defined by Webster, “ the policy or practice of volunteering one’s time or services as for charitable or community work “ Are you and your Post a player ? May – This month marks the anniversary of the St. Louis Caucus, where organization of The American Legion was completed in 1919. Armed Forces Day, Mother’s Day and Memorial Day form the basis for good post programs and outreach to U.S. military personnel in communities nationwide. Consider honoring them with a Blue Star Salute. Does the post have a uniformed group? Do you decorate veterans’ graves? Present school awards at the end of the semester. Kick off American Legion Baseball and summer athletic programs. Contact school officials to get Legion activities approved and on the calendar for next year: Oratorical Contest, Boys State, School Awards and American Education Week. “ Don’t assume anybody knows anything unless you tell them yourself “ COL J.C. Hardee USMC May thought: “ It’s not who you are or where you’ve been, it’s where you’re going that counts.” – Cal Farley Respectfully, Jim Jeffries Sr. Vice Commander The American Legion
