Year 1Daly celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday

Year 1Daly have celebrated the Queen’s 90th birthday by making their own chocolate krispie cakes (estimating, weighing and timing); having a picnic to eat their cakes, and learning to sing the National Anthem, (standing up) with the rest of Year 1 and Mr Reich-Storer. Union Jack bunting is up in the classroom and the children have been learning about the countries of the United Kingdom as well as finding the Commonwealth countries on a world map. The children have also written a lovely letter to the Queen.

Woodford Green Athletics Club Cross Country Relay Event

On Thursday 21 April Coopersale Hall School took part in the first ever running of The Woodford Green Athletics Club Cross Country Team Competition. The event involved teams of four runners, each running 1500m as a relay race. Both the girls and boys teams from the school ran with great determination and effort. The girls produced a wonderful performance with each member of the team Ava , Brooke , Elana and Imogen running brilliantly to win the event overall.

Well done to all of the pupils who took part, Mr Robinson would like to thank all of the pupils for their effort and determination. Also a big thank you to all the parents who came along to cheer on our runners.

Year 4 Cooking in French Lessons

Year 4 have been having great fun in their French lessons recently. Madame Bashorun told the story of how every year in January the French people celebrate “La galette des Rois” called the King Cake. Everyone bakes a pastry and inside the pastry a broad bean is hidden. Who ever finds the bean will be the King or the Queen for the day and will have to find a partner.

Year 4 enjoyed making “La galette des Rois” and learning about the ingredients and the history.

Bancroft’s Swimming Gala

On Wednesday 27 April Coopersale Hall took part in the Bancroft’s swimming gala. We did really well in the gala coming fifth overall and with good results in the backstroke, freestyle and all the relays. We should be proud. We made four finals and achieved a first, two thirds and a fourth place. Sebastian had a great time leading the team out and to come fifth out of eleven big schools was extra special. The whole team put all their effort in with only four teams beating us. It was a great achievement. Thank you Mr Robinson and Mrs Knowles for supporting us. Well done team fifth place was excellent.

Guide Dogs Visit Coopersale

Last week we enjoyed a visit from the Guide Dog Association who are our chosen charity for this term. They came into our assembly and spoke to the children about the charity and how the dogs are trained before they are put with a blind person. The children loved meeting the puppy and were able to ask lots of questions. We are hoping for another visit later this term - watch this space.

Musical Assembly at Coopersale Hall

Mrs Hutchings and Mr Bartels, our musical instrument teachers took an assembly to showcase music to the school. The sounds of beautiful music came across as we listened to some of their pupils. Imogen on flute, Melissa on guitar, Zoe and Meadow on violin all gave confident and well practised performances. The assembly finished with both teachers performing to the school to demonstrate what can be achieved with many years of practice. A big thank you to Mr Hutchings who accompanied so well on the piano. If you would like your child to take up a musical instrument please contact the school office for further details.

My Trip to Epping Forest Field Study Centre by Lucy H (Year 3)

When we were at the centre we met Abby. She took us in the forest, it was an out door class room. She taught us how to use a compass. When we were good at using a compass Abby said we had to go off into the forest. In the forest there were some labels with an animal code and a letter. We had a work sheet and we had to find the answers. We were doing orienteering. When we were on the mud I got stuck and Mrs Wheeler had to save me! It was a very good day and I enjoyed it very much.

Year 3 Visit Epping Forest Field Study Centre

On Thursday, 21 April, Year 3 visited the Epping Forest Field Study Centre where they enjoyed taking part in a number of activities to explore and discover the glorious surroundings of Epping Forest. The children were interested to learn how to use a compass to navigate through the forest, to describe the area using their senses, to discuss reasons why people come to Epping Forest and to compile information to complete a road traffic survey.

Roman Verulamium Trip

Year 4 had a wonderful trip to St Albans on Wednesday 4 May. The weather was glorious and we explored the park and the Roman Walls, the hyporcaust and mosaic and then the museum. We finished with a handling session where we discussed Roman artefacts and their uses. The children really enjoyed the trip and impressed the museum staff with their Roman knowledge.

A Special Birthday—100 Years on 28 April 2016

Coopersale Hall were invited to Treetops Home in Epping by Mrs Green (Amelia’s Mum in UKT) to help Edith celebrate her 100th birthday. Year 4 made a big card and six representatives went to Treetops to meet Edith, who prefers to be known as Cissy. There was a party, a big cake, refreshments, balloons and of course singing. Cissy’s three sons and their wives were all there and she was thoroughly enjoying her day and awaiting her telegram from the Queen. We felt honoured to be part of her celebration.

Year 1 Daly’s Rock Pools

Year 1Daly have been learning about all the lovely things you might find in a rock pool on the shores of the UK. Here are some photos of the children making their own rock pools, which they loved doing.

Prep Schools Cross Country Relay Races

On Thursday 28 April, seven prep schools took part in the relay cross country event. Luckily the weather was dry and quite pleasant. All our runners performed well and we were thrilled that our Year 5 and 6 girls came second and our Year 3 and 4 boys won gold!

Congratulations to everyone who took part. A big thank you to Mr Robinson and Mrs Lane who organised the event and to all the staff who helped on the day.

Year 1 Daly Art Work

The children have all made posters in Year 1Daly for the Healthy Living Poster Competition.

Didn’t they do well?

Good luck everyone.

FOCHS Update

We are delighted to announce that work on a brand new adventure playground has commenced this week (as some of you will already have noticed!) - the existing area is being extended and play equipment to suit all age groups throughout the school is being installed. It's a really exciting project that has been made possible because of the support of parents in fundraising, together with some help from the school and the advice of the teachers. We are sure the children are all going to get great enjoyment from it. Another FoCHS sponsored event took place last week with a display of retriever dogs at the school during which all the children will have the opportunity to both meet and compete with the dogs. Meanwhile, Ice Cream Friday was really well attended last week and we hope that this continues throughout the term! Look forward to seeing you there, with any luck in the same weather! If you would like to get in touch please don't hesitate to drop us a line at [email protected]. Thank you!

Epping Forest Dance Festival

On Saturday 19 March Coopersale Hall School entered a couple of group dances into the local Epping Forest Dance Festival. Coopersale Hall dance club entered their dance called ‘Doctor Beat’ putting up a great performance and winning 2nd place and the Silver Medal. The adjudicator reported that it was a very well rehearsed group with the dancers working well together, good use of the stage and great fun to watch. The Year 2 girls performed a number called ‘Welcoming the Spring’. The adjudicator said it was a charming and well polished performance with pretty costumes. Very excitingly the girls won 1st place and the Gold Medal together with a shield. Congratulations to all the dancers who took part. They all danced brilliantly and were a credit to their school. Many thanks also to all the parents for their enthusiastic support.

Epping in Bloom Competition

Our school has taken part in the local ‘Epping in Bloom’ competition. The children were given a peg and the theme was ‘Insects’ . The entrants’ ranged from 5 years to 11 years. The standard was phenomenal and so it was a very difficult decision for the teachers and teaching assistants to decide whose work should be chosen. The insects from our school are being displayed in Tesco, Epping for one week. The rest of the insects have gone on display in our library here at Coopersale Hall School. We entered 50 and are awaiting the results. Good luck to everyone whose work was entered.

Local Schools Cross Country Relay Races

On Thursday 5 May Coopersale Hall school hosted the local schools cross country relay races. The races took place on The Epping Golf Course. Coopersale Hall had an excellent afternoon winning the Year 5/6 girls race and coming second in the Year 3/4

boys race. The girls Year 3/4 A and B teams had a fantastic result, finishing joint 2nd in Silver Medal position. Well done everyone!

Out of the Box Club

Every Tuesday, at the end of the school day, a group of Key Stage One children pull on their wellies and head for the great outdoors; Accompanied by Mrs Hulbert and assisted by Miss Rooks, the children explore and enjoy games and activities in our beautiful school grounds. This term we have been out looking for signs of Spring in nature, experiencing the wonders of the changing seasons. Over the weeks we have listened to singing birds choosing their mates and their nesting sites and watched tightly closed buds swell and open to reveal bright new leaves and clusters of blossom. It’s a stimulating sensory delight to really use eyes, ears and our sense of touch to stop and appreciate what nature, aided by our hard-working Coopersale groundsmen, has to offer outdoors.

World War II Visitor to Year 3

Year 3 were very fortunate to have a visitor who had lived through World War II. He came and spoke to the children about his experiences of life during that time. My great great uncle came in to talk to my class about the war. He was 17 when the war started. He was 19 when he got called up. He was wearing six medals but he has eleven medals altogether. He has the same date as my birthday, 29 October. He is 95 now. Every day he had to make his bed for an inspection. He polished his boots. Some people sold their spare pair of boots and when one of the men like a Captain came they said, “I have lost my boots”. They got three shillings (that is 15pence) a week. By Edward F

On Monday 9 May, Mr Kingsbury came in to visit us for our History lesson. He had lots of badges and medals to show us. By Gabriella S Mr Kingsbury who told us to call him Bob explained what it was like in World War II. He was called up in 1941 and had 12 weeks training to work as a Vehicle Tradesman. At the end of the lesson we got to see Bob’s medals. I was amazed to see someone who had lived in the war. By Riven V

Bob was trained in Ireland and was only 19 when he was called up. He met Winston Churchill’s daughter as well as Queen Elizabeth. He earned three shillings a week. By Daisy S Bob told us that when he joined up he travelled to Ireland and it was his first time on a boat. Some of the men got seasick. He travelled to France and landed on the 8th day of the D-Day Landings. He landed on Gold Beach. Every morning at 6am he was ‘On Parade.’ He must have been very brave because his brother got to stay in England and he had to live abroad in Ireland and Holland. He met his wife in Germany. By Thomas M Edward Foley’s Great, Great Uncle came to see us. He came to see us because he was alive during World War II. Bob earned lots of awards for commitment in the war. By Charlie W

Year 6 Visit the Gunpowder Mills

When we first arrived we were greeted by a lady who took us back in time. The boys were told to follow behind the girls. Once we had reached the room one of us had to hold open the doors for the ladies. After we were told not to sit until the ladies had sat. All the girls had sat except for Mrs Redin but we sat and we had to stand back up until Mrs Redin had sat. We learnt about Victorian toys. We learnt that the poorer children had more fun than the rich since the rich had to stay at home whilst the poor had fun outside. The poor would invent fun games out of the resources around them. They would play with sticks, stones and many other items you could obtain outside. After we got to play with some of the toys. We played with the replicas because the real things are too fragile. By Matthew W Our second activity was about the beach or seaside. There were lots of pictures to look at. All the pictures were real pictures from the Victorians. Horses used to pull into the sea a bathing hut for them to get changed into as they hated to be seen in public practically nude. It was also considered rather rude. Ladies and men went into the sea at different times. In those days it was bad to show off their bodies, but now we have very small bikinis and we like to show our legs, arms and bodies. By Kate O Next we looked at the work conditions for children who didn’t go to school. We were separated into groups in order to experience the jobs first hand. I was in a group that was sent outside to do laundry. A basket full of dirty laundry had to be soaked in a tub of water and rubbed on a wash board before it was hung on the fence. This was a very interesting experience despite not earning more the 12 pence per day, if we followed instructions such as, no talking or asking questions. For each question or word spoken, one pence was taken from the child. The others did jobs such as putting 40 match-sticks into a box and scrubbing, cleaning and polishing shoes. By Elana A The last lesson: This lesson was probably the best, it was a real Victorian classroom. The man was very scary. As he went through the rules, I was thinking how on earth could Victorians keep to the rules and how the man could keep a straight face. The man gave us slate boards and chalk and Kate had something on her board but the man thought that she had drawn it so he gave her the Dunce’s hat. The man made us write out the alphabet all swirly. Lily got to write in the book because her handwriting was so neat. As the man was looking round Mrs Doherty’s writing was bad, she got the cane. Jack also got the Dunce’s hat because he didn't give Mrs Redin a cloth. This was our day, it was so much fun. By Millie V

Fun in Science Lessons by Mrs Carter

Today I have used the glasses left behind by the guide dog people, along with other glasses that I had. I did some simple reading and writing activities with the year 5 pupils. With the Year 6 pupils they were building electrical circuits, which was their normal lesson, wearing the glasses. Most found it very challenging and restrictive.

Well Done Melissa!

On the 27 April Melissa competed in the Karate Sport of England Competition in Harlow. Melissa fought amazingly well and won the gold medal in Kumite (fighting). Melissa then took part in the team Kumite (team fighting) event with two girls named Connie and Izzie. Melissa had a fantastic day. Well done you were fantastic.
