On April 21, 2016, a group of Waiʻanae residents and I spent the day on a Wai Wai ʻO Waiʻanae Tunnels Site Tour hosted by the Honolulu Board of Water Supply. On this tour, we were able to explore The Waiʻanae Water Tunnel in Waianae Valley as well as The Glover Tunnel in the lush Makaha Valley, where we paid a visit to the beautifully preserved Kaneʻaki Heiau. Along with visiting the water tunnels, we made a stop at The Cultural Learning Center at Ka'ala Lo`i Kalo to learn more about the history of the ancient constructed wetland terrace and the community's restoration project. After lunch, my staff and I paid a visit to E Ala Voyaging Academy at the Waiʻanae Boat Harbor to hear the heartfelt story and history of the sailing canoe and the academy's future plans in the community. Our last stop of the day was at Green Lanterns Beach (Māʻili) to talk story with our awesome, hardworking City Lifeguards and to discuss plans to improve our lifeguard's equipment so that they can continue to keep our residents safe in and out of the waters. I look forward to planning future tours in areas across our district. Improving Bus Routes on the Leeward Coast

Councilmember Pine is committed to ensuring that public

transportation on our Leeward Coast continues to be improved.

In March, after meeting with residents, TheBus Hawaii, the City's

Department of Transportation Services, and sharing our community's concerns about bus overcrowding, the City added an

additional 3:48 a.m. Route 93 Bus that runs from Makaha to Downtown Honolulu. Now, Councilmember Pine is also focusing on finding solutions for overcrowding on Bus Route 40, a 24 hour bus that runs from Honolulu—Ala Moana to Makaha towers.

Councilmember Pine recently met with City Department of Transportation Services (DTS) Director Michael Formby to discuss

concerns raised by Leeward residents regarding overcrowding on Route 40 during evening and early morning hours. DTS provided an

update on a general review of Route 40 that examined the overall traffic flow of the bus, and whether there is a need for solutions to

alleviate the reported congestion on this route. Preliminary information in this review did reveal overcrowding occurring on Bus

Route 40.

DTS is now conducting an in-depth analysis to examine times of

overcrowding, passenger counts, and which portions are most affected. After this information is collected, the City will work to

create solutions to improve this bus route for our Leeward residents.

Councilmember looks forward to updating our community members

with results from the analysis performed by DTS regarding Bus

Route 40. To stay updated with transportation in our district, please connect with www.councilmemberpine.com
