It’s May, It’s May, The Lovely Month of May!

The month of May, named after the

Greek goddess Maia, is traditionally a time of great celebration in the Northern Hemisphere. It is a time when flowers emerge and crops begin to sprout. May 1st, or May Day, marks the end of the harsh winter months, welcomes the beginning of summer and optimistically looks forward to the bright and productive months of the year.

Here, in North Texas, May is celebrated as the end of the school year and beginning of summer vacation. It is also, normally, the last month that we can squeak by without the air conditioner before the summer heat invades. We encourage you to get out and enjoy the variety of outdoor activities available in our area this month while the weather is at its glorious best.

The 2015 Green Scene Garden Tour will take place on May 3rd from 12 noon until 4:30 p.m. Azle presents six beautiful gardens of all sizes that encompass sun,

shade, native and non-native plants and water features along with folk art and antique items. Picnic tables and chairs will be set up and gourmet sack lunches are available. All the information you need for this event is located on the calendar of events pages of the magazine.Another fun family outing this month happens on Saturday, May 2, at 11a.m. on the square in Granbury. Granbury Gunslingers on the Square is a free event that takes place the first Saturday of every month. The Gunslingers will be looking for the bad guys on the square and making sure they’re taken care of during this simulated, interactive gunfight.

May 14th brings the first concert of the Doss Heritage and Culture Center’s Log Cabin Concert Series. The series runs through December and features five of the country’s top western entertainers. The May concert showcases Dave Stamey, who has been a cowboy, a mule packer, a dude wrangler, and is now one of the most popular Western entertainers working today. Voted six times Entertainer of the Year, six times Male Vocalist of the Year, and five times

Songwriter of the Year by the Western Music Association, along with receiving the Will Rogers Award from the Academy of Western Artists, Dave Stamey’s concert is one you won’t want to miss!

Mother’s Day on May 10th brings the chance for you to say “Thanks Mom” to all the special women in your life. Area gardens and restaurants will be offering Mother’s Day brunches, lunches and dinners and area florists will be taking orders for flowers and special treats. Take a peek at our activities section as well as our list of restaurants and make your reservations now.

Enjoy the lovely month of May and all the fun things to do in our area. Just remember…the dog days of summer are right around the corner… so, what are you waiting for? Get up and get out there while you can still touch your steering wheel without getting second degree burns!

MAY BRINGS NEW MAD MAX BACK TO THEATRES NATIONWIDE

May 15th will see audiences lined up for the

opening of the action-packed sequel Mad Max: Fury Road. Director George Miller brings back the adventure based film series to be set shortly before the events of Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior. Starring Tom Hardy as Mad Max and introducing Charlize Theron as the daring Furiosa.

Haunted by his turbulent past, Mad Max believes the best way to survive is to wander alone in a post-apocalyptic world. Nevertheless,

he becomes swept up with a group fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by an elite Imperator, Furiosa. They are escaping a Citadel tyrannized by the Immortan Joe, from whom something irreplaceable has been taken. Enraged, the Warlord marshals all his gangs and pursues the revels ruthlessly in the high-octane Road War that follows. There’s Max, a man of action and a man of few words, who seeks peace of mind following the loss of his wife and child in the aftermath of the chaos. And Furiosa, a woman of action and a woman who believes her path to survival may be achieved if she can make it across the desert back to her childhood homeland.

Be sure to catch the original Mad Max actor Mel Gibson during his cameo role. Sources say that he is perfectly cast in the film and that a hidden nod to former Mad Max actress Tina Turner is also supposedly hidden in the film.

Hoping to overthrow the Mad Max series, Marvel Comics seem to have outdone themselves with Avengers: Age of Ultron. Earth’s mightiest heroes must once again assemble when a super intelligent robot created by Tony Stark created to help fight any threats that might harm the world actually turns against him and the human race. Robert Downey Jr., Chris

Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson all return in the sequel to Marvel’s The Avengers with new names like Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen joining the team. Disney & Marvel release the film this summer on May 1st. You ready?

If action and adventure isn’t quite the feeling you’re hoping to capture at the box office in May, you’ll be delighted with the comedy styling’s of Hot Pursuit, starring Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara. Opening May 7th nationwide, An inept police officer (Witherspoon) must protect the widow of a drug dealer (Vergara) from criminals and dirty policemen. The pairing of actors can only be described as both awkward and brilliant,

pinning Witherspoon’s deadpan expressions against Vergara’s wildly comedic face and charming broken English. The plot has the film taking place in Texas, when the film was actually shot in New Orleans.

Fun Fact: Prior to filming Hot Pursuit, the original working film title was Don’t Mess With Texas. Yeah, I’m glad that didn’t work out either!

Local Weatherford artist Rosalie Kobetich, who had begun drawing at an early

age using graphite, first purchased some oil paint in 1978 and was completely hooked. Attracted to the warmer climate, Rosalie and her husband John migrated to Texas from Long Island, New York in 1979. “Much better than moving to Vermont” Kobetich says. After settling in Weatherford and starting a family, Rosalie became a beloved and important member of the Weatherford Art Association (since 2001), of which she is in her third term as secretary.

She has since added acrylics, watercolors and prismacolor pencil to her choices of medium. Rosalie is self-taught and her subjects are varied; these include portraits, wildlife, horses, landscapes, seascapes, and a dash of abstract. Over the years, she has won many Artist of the Month awards, as well as Artist

of the Year. Her accolades have not just been reserved for her art, but for her teaching as well. Rosalie teaches art classes for adults on Tuesdays from 1:30 to

3:30. She says, “I try to bring out the artistic passion in my students, and so far, I have had great success! My students love what they do and so do I! You never stop learning about art, as there is always something new to experience.”

Of course, Rosalie’s three children may be her biggest accomplishment. As anyone can tell you, raising kids is a huge task that requires a skill-set all on its’ own, much less raising kids that inherited their mom’s love of the arts. All three are accomplished artists in their own rights. The boys, Adam and Darrin, are artists and musicians while her

daughter Karen is quite adept in photography and even holds a Yoga instructor’s degree. It seems the transplant to Texas did this family well!

Rosalie’s art is on display at “Fred’s Texas Cafe” in downtown Fort Worth, and she recently participated in the Arte de Los Brazos at Possum Kingdom She also has work on exhibit in the Pencil Exhibit Show and sale at the art gallery.

If the early buzz is correct, when the featured painting

for this year’s Chris Kyle Memorial Benefit hits the auction floor, bidding will be furious. The 30 x 40 oil painting depicting a charging bull bison, is the creation of local western artist Randy Meador, who paints from his own photos.

Randy said he had two concurrent thoughts during the day-long bison photo shoot last fall, “Don’t miss the shot. Don’t wet our pants.” A pipe fence that separated him from the charging bison for most of the shoot provided little comfort. “When 2,000 pounds of angry beast slams to a halt inches from your vital organs, you’re thankful for the competent welders who made that fence, and you’re in awe of the raw power within one of God’s magnificent creations.”

Navy SEAL Chris Kyle’s life was recently celebrated

by the successful movie, American Sniper, based on a book of the same name, authored by Kyle before his tragic death shortly after his military service. Kyle’s SEAL Team III adopted as its mascot, The Punisher, Marvel Comic’s rogue righter of the wronged. Randy made The Punisher logo a central theme in the painting. He used the signature elongated skull as the gleam in the charging buffalo’s eye. The painting’s title, “Bullseye.”

“My associations and friendships forged through the Wounded Warrior Project and the Chris Kyle Foundations have been some of the most fulfilling of my life. I’m so proud to be associated with these remarkable men and women.”

Randy’s work is found in several galleries around the country and locally at Your Private Collection on the square in Granbury.

Who makes the best steak in Texas?

Show up in Hico, Texas from 10 am till 7 pm. on Saturday, May 16th for the 12th Annual Texas Steak Cook-off and Wine Festival to find out. The top chef will receive the coveted honor of “Best Steak in Texas,” and a cash prize of $3,500.00. While most of the chefs competing are from Texas, chefs have come from Oklahoma, Louisiana, Georgia, even as far away as Arizona. If you truly want a taste of Texas this is the event to attend. The city of Hico expects approximately 6,000 attendees this year.

There are several ways to get the most out of the cook-off. First, there is a wine tasting event that goes on simultaneously with the cook-off. Beginning at 11 am and going till 5 pm on Saturday, there will be as many as 16 different Texas wineries to taste under the tents in the downtown area. You can buy wine by the glass, bottle or case from your favorite winery. Learn something new about how your favorite wine is made or where a certain

grape is grown. Tickets for this event are $20.00. For your purchase you will receive a commemorative glass to keep along with tastings from each of the wineries.

Next, you can indulge your taste buds with some tasty tidbits during the Hors d’ouvres competition. This is where you can sample everything the cook-off has to offer including steak, chicken,

stuffed peppers and so much more. Tickets for this event are $10.00; you will receive a wristband so you can walk around from chef to chef sampling all the amazing food being grilled before your eyes.

[

The granddaddy of the cook-off is the 12-oz Ribeye Steak competition. For $25.00 you get a 12-oz ribeye steak dinner with all the trimmings, the wristband for the Hors d’ouvres, and a chance to win door prizes throughout the day. The winners of each of the competitions will be announced at the end of the days’ events around 7 pm.

Largest steak cookoff in the Southwest!

GRAN- BURY HOTEL/MOTEL

ActivitiesOf course, there is lots to do to help you work off some of the food. As Brenda Hyde, a frequent visitor to the Texas cook-off, puts it, “You can shop, eat, shop and eat all day long. It’s a lot of fun.” Brenda and her husband usually just buy the wristband because on their first trip they were too full from the

sampling to enjoy the 12-ounce ribeye steak dinner. So caution, when you come, come hungry.

Throughout the day there will be various bands taking the stage to give you more opportunities to work off the food. Some of the bands that are

scheduled are the Sloppy Joe Band, Mojo Assassins and the Sieker Band.

Arts and crafts from all over the country will satisfy any shoppers desire to find unique and quality items.

The most sought after ticket though, is the VIP Seating. It will take place at a special location in a private courtyard with upscale amenities. The chef for this event will be Bubba Frank, the chef at the Turtle Restaurant in Brownwood, Texas. For tickets to this event or any of the Texas Steak Cook-off events you can go to www.TexasStateCookoff.com Tickets for the VIP Seating go quickly so you are urged to buy early, all events sold out last year.

The Texas Steak Cook-off is an annual initiative introduced by the Hico Economic Development Corporation and the City of Hico to promote economic growth and tourism. The Hico EDC is a nonprofit organization. The Cook-off is held every year on the third Saturday in May.

There have been recent assessments about the best ideas concerning your health. Last

month we presented five of the top ten recommendations (numbers 6 through 10) as reported by Dr. David Eifrig. This month the top five suggestions are reported starting with 5 and & ending with the most important issue you can do for your overall health.

5. Meditation - People who meditate have lower blood pressure, less heart disease and better oxygen uptake. They feel less stressed also. Meditation has benefits similar to exercise but without the wear, tear, and stress on your body that happens during training.

4. Sun - Sunlight lowers the risk

A HEALTHIER YOU - PART IIof several cancers. The vitamin D produced by the body from sunlight may be critical in preventing diseases such as multiple sclerosis and depression. Some people would rather take a pill to get their vitamin D than go outside for twenty minutes a day. But there’s a catch- the vitamin D we get in our food requires sunlight to chemically activate and become useful. So spend some time outside, instead of relying on a pill.

3. Vegetables - Most Americans only eat about 1.5 servings of vegetables per day. A study published in 2014 suggests eating up to seven servings of fruits & vegetables per day lowers your risk of dying from any health related cause. But it is noted also that it’s likely the vegetables are doing the work.

Vegetables are low-fat, low calorie and high in fiber. Green leafy vegetable’s like spinach & kale are some of the most nutrient dense.

2. Movement - Exercise improves your mood and boosts your immune system. One excuse people use for not exercising is a lack of time. This year’s most fascinating science results are in and time can no longer be an excuse.

People who did just one minute of intense exercise as part of 10 total minutes of exercise(the other nine minutes being walking), three days a week for six weeks, lowered their blood pressure and increased their endurance by 12%. Researchers call it sprint interval training (SIT). So just 30 minutes a week produces benefits.

1. Sleep - Is the number one most

Activities

important health secret. To give your brain time to get ready for sleep, shut off your electronics an hour before bed. Keep the lights dim and the shades covered.

Some electronics emit blue light which has been found to be the most disruptive to circadian rhythms. Think of this circadian rhythmas a clock that signals our bodies the optimal time to do things, like falling asleep and waking up. Blue light also stops the release of melatonin- the hormone that makes you sleepy.

“Your home away from home,” is Bennett’s Camping Center’s motto, one of the longest running, most reputable RV dealerships in North Texas. They do it all and have it all. They are a full service dealership, which means they provide rentals, upgrades, parts & service as well as new and used RV’s. Their 2015 line-up includes DRV, Excel, SolAire, Canyon Trail by Gulf Stream and PaloMini by Palomino. If you are looking for used they’ve got them too. The parts store is expansive, one of the largest in North Texas. The repair shop

has factory-trained mechanics and in-house appliance repair. It’s not bragging if you can do it. And they have been doing it right for more than 40 years.

Like so many family-owned and operated businesses, the Bennett’s began Bennett’s Camping Center in their garage until the city said no, you can’t do that. They then opened shop in a portable building, which still stands nostalgically on the property today. Of course, now it is only used for storage. But, it is a reminder of how far they have grown in the last four decades. After so many years with the same signage, it became apparent it was necessary to do a little maintenance and give the store front a little bit of a facelift. When customers saw the signage being demolished to make room for the new one,

Summer Camping FUN starts at Bennett’s

many asked if Bennett’s was going out of business, an indicator that the front of the store was looking a little warn and dated and needed the update; the response, “No way, we’re not going anywhere, we’re here to stay!”

The new façade and entry demonstrates they are keeping up with the times and so does the beautiful line of brand new RV’s on the lot. Bennett’s Camping Center and Bennett’s RV Ranch are shining examples of good stewardship, family pride, quality work and sound business practices.

To say thank you to the customers who have kept Bennett’s in business all these years, Bennett’s is hosting a customer appreciation event on Friday and Saturday, May 15-16 from 10 am to 5 pm. Come by and see the new 2015 RV’s in stock. They will have refreshments in the morning, and a food truck will be providing food through the close of each day. You could even win one of the fabulous door prizes that will be given away throughout the two-day event. If you have never visited them before, you should take advantage of their hospitality, you just might find a new family pass time.

Family is what the Bennett’s are all about and they are avid campers themselves. They know what you are looking for in a camping experience. Bennett’s Camping Center was founded in 1972 by Wayne and Faye Bennett and with the help of their daughter Stacy, as general manager and son-in-law Jim, sales and personnel, they expect to continue for many more decades.

In 2008 Stacy and Jim took advantage of an opportunity when the property next to the camping center went up for sale. They weren’t sure what to do with the property initially, but decided to build the Bennett’s RV Ranch. It turned out to be a great move. Campers can enjoy year round availability as well as having a complete repair shop and parts store within walking distance. Repairs by the factory-trained technicians can be made while you are at the camp. Amenities include laundry room, clubhouse and free high speed Internet access. Playgrounds will be opening soon.

Check out the new, improved Bennett’s Camping Center and RV Ranch.
