AT LIBERTY… Brought to you by the Green Lions

Liberty Middle School is a place for serious environmental learning and we

have fun doing it. So Earth Day is a perfect day to challenge our scholars. That’s why we

held out first Teaching and Learning without Paper Day. Teachers, staff and stu-

dents had to find ways to do school without paper. Some went low tech and had

students write on whiteboards, others went high tech and used ipads to take notes and

then downloaded these notes to Google Drive. Each student was given a paperclip

attached with a safety pin as a reminder not to use paper. Over 200 students made it

through the day without using paper. The office staff also chipped in my using laminated

reusable passes and email. These were big achievements, it’s estimated that each class

uses 850 sheets of paper per student per year. If you add up the cost of paper, printing fees, toner & ink,

service on copiers and printers, and power costs, plus the paper students purchase and bring from home,

we easily spend $40,000 on paper or around $250 per day.

The other big Earth Day event was Environment Time, a time to care for the natural and built

environment around the school. Students cleaned common spaces, such as hallways, gym, computer labs,

staff lounge, lost and found, and picked up litter on the sports field, in front of the

school and covered play area. Another class collected data on the number of plugged

in appliances around school. Still others planted and toured our fully operational

greenhouses. It was a great way for students to connect the

care of our school with civic responsibility and Earth Day.

And as you can tell from the pictures, they had

fun doing it.

Last month, Brian Andrade, Destiny

Laycock and Paris Laycock partici-

pated in the Special Olympics regional

meet for swimming. All three athletes

did really well, and both are going to

the state meet! Brian won first place

in the 25 meter freestyle, 25 meter

backstroke and took 3rd place in the

50 meter freestyle race. As a result

of his first place finish, he’ll move on

to state for all three races! Paris

placed 1st in her 25 meter freestyle

race which means she, too, will move

on to state. Destiny placed 1st in her

15 meter backstroke and 15 meter

freestyle, and took 3rd place in her

25 meter freestyle.

We are so proud of our Lions!!!!!

Liberty’s Emergency Response Plan

requires each classroom to have a

bath-sized towel in their room in the event of a Haz-

ardous Emission drill or situation to place tightly against the

bottom of the hallway door. We would like to be consistent

with using white towels in each classroom and are seeking

donations prior to spending money on new towels to be

used on the floor. If you have any gently used white bath

towels to donate, please send them to the main office.
