As the end of the academic year approaches many of you will be completing your final assessments, preparing for examinations and, in many cases, planning your next step. This might be progression to a programme at the next level within your vocational area or employment or, in some cases, higher education.

The key messages at this critical time of the year are to ensure that you have discussed with your tutor the work which you still have to complete and the internal progression opportunities which are available to you. Qualifications certainly give you an advantage within what is a competitive labour market and a period of high youth unemployment. If you are undecided about what to do next be sure to talk to your tutor or, alternatively, a member of the College’s guidance team. They’ll be pleased to advise on the options available to you.

On a lighter note Wednesday June 11 will see the inaugural ‘inter-campus’ Varsity Sports Day when students from Gallows Lane, Beverley will compete in a range of sports and activities against those from St Mary’s Walk, Bridlington. We will be offering students the opportunity to take place in activities such as football, touch rugby, rounders, netball, basketball and 6-a-side cricket. There will also be our annual staff v students football and netball matches - staff are the current champions in both events. To find out more and to participate please contact Matt Jeffrey at [email protected] .

Welcome

A life on the ocean waves...

Marine and motorcycle engineering students enjoyed the 2014 London Boat Show at the ExCeL London venue in January.

They enjoyed an overnight stay before taking in some interesting and impressive exhibits.

Tutor Mike Farline said: “It was a great show with some unbelievable boats and everyone enjoyed it.”

Two East Riding College students have won regional apprentice awards from the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI).

Luke Burton, 18, from Dolly’s Autos of Driffield, won the leading first year apprentice award and James Paton, 20, from SHAWS motor engineers of Driffield, won the leading third year apprentice award in the IMI’s Hull and District Member Association Apprentice Awards.

Luke won the award for his hard work and dedication to the course and his early completion of all his course work.

He said: “I am very proud to have received this award and would like to thank my workplace and college tutor for their support with my Apprenticeship.”

James won the award for completing his coursework within the first year of the two-year qualification and successfully going on to pass his MOT exam to become a tester.

Award winning Apprentices

James said: “I’ve always enjoyed coming to college and have learnt a lot since starting the Apprenticeship.

“The knowledge and experience I have gained from both my work colleagues and my tutor have enabled me to progress within the industry to where I am today.”

Their tutor at the College, Glenn

Jensen, said: “Luke and James are excellent apprentices who are a credit to themselves and their employers, and they thoroughly deserve these awards.

“Both are great examples of how an Apprenticeship allows you to develop skills at work and the knowledge to complement it at College, and become a real asset to their companies.”

TV and film actor Adrian Rawlins, (right, centre) chatted with students during a visit to the College.Mr Rawlins, who is known for playing Harry Potter’s dad, James, in the film series and who has appeared in the TV series Silent Witness, Dr Who and Midsomer Murders, spent an hour with learners on performing arts and TV and film courses at St Mary’s Walk.

He talked frankly about his early experiences of entering the industry as well as giving valuable information as to how the industry works.

Performing arts student Ryan Kemp, 18, from Bridlington said: “It was so interesting to hear Adrian talking about his time in the business and how he prepares for roles.

“He was really down to earth and told us some fascinating stories about what it’s like to be an actor and some of the people he has worked with.”

TV and film student Gabriella Gadelleta, 17, from Filey said: “This was a really valuable session and really useful for people like me who want to work in TV and film to hear from someone who works on the other side of the camera.

“We all recognised him from Harry Potter and his TV work and it really helped us to make sense of what we are learning when we heard how the theory is put into practice.”

Tutor John Ellerington said: “Adrian’s time on Silent Witness and of course the Harry Potter series was explained through very personal stories which meant more than just reading about them on the internet.

“It meant that the students could really relate something quite fictional to a real person, something that is hugely beneficial to their understanding of the industry.

“Adrian came across in a very friendly and cool manner and I’m sure he left the students thinking that actors are real people not just celebrities.”

Engineering students from EastRidingCollegewillnextyearbehoningtheirskillswith£220,000ofnewindustrystandardequipment,thankstoagrantfromtheSkillsFundingAgency(SFA).

The computer numerical controlled (CNC) equipment will mean that learners are working on the latest in industry technology and are well prepared to join the region’s workforce.

The equipment, to be installed at the Gallows Lane

site over the summer, includes a new lathe, milling machine and a machine centre, a large piece of equipment that brings together various machining elements in order to manufacture components in a single process.

Liam Lockyer, 17, from Beverley, who is studying on the Level Three BTEC Diploma in Manufacturing Engineering, said: “This opens up a lot of opportunities. We visited the

Mach 2014 manufacturing technologies exhibition that showed us the potential of the machines we are getting.

Will Clark, 17, also from Beverley, and studying on the same course, said: “Having the CNC machines gives you more of an advantage because if you want something really precise cutting out you can input the measurements and it just does it for you.
