Welcome everyone to this second term for U3A Kingborough. All the usual activities were underway and on schedule back in March, at both Kingston and Woodbridge, and in the field. The accompanying high level of interest and energy was, and is, so encouraging to see. Let’s keep the momentum going! It was great to see so many at our recent Welcome BBQ, despite the weather. Membership remains at just below the 300 mark. Enrolments for the term have been good, as anticipated, and the class offerings at the normal excellent standard. Terrific to see some long standing Tutors back, as well as some new to Kingborough. Class participants have been loud in their praise. Before the AGM in late March, four Committee members decided not to renominate, and were replaced (through nomination and election) by Coral Wilson, Ian and Janet Nicholson and Marian Hearn. The resulting new Committee has met and started into the year of work. For the information of folk new on the scene, Committee members may be identified by the blue dots on their name badges. We hope to post a photo of the Committee on the notice boards in A Block and at Westwinds. Please approach any Committee member with any queries or suggestions that you may have. KINGSTON COURSES Monday 9:30 – 12:30 A2 Art Studio – Pleasure with Pencils and Paint Helen Quilty Class Limit: 24 Come along with paint and pencils to our vibrant art studio and library. Immerse yourself in group creativity with one-to-one tutoring and demonstration. We will accommodate the many different types of media favoured in the class. Helen has established an art studio which is still popular after 11 years of tutoring in both painting and drawing techniques. She is a versatile artist / illustrator and skilled water colourist. Monday 9:30 – 11:15 A3 Mah Jong Co-ordinator Claire Morgan Here is your chance to play or learn how to play the amazing ancient Chinese game of Mah Jong. This course will introduce you to the way it is still played in China, the country of its origin, though it is popular around the world. And now it's here in Kingston! If you have a Mah Jong set you can bring along that would be really useful. Don't be put off if you don't have your own set as there are some sets available for the class. Claire Morgan has agreed to lead this class in Greg Thé’s absence this term. Monday 10 am Kingston Beach Hub New Technologies Richard Lim Class Limit: 8 Confused by New Technologies? Here is your chance to become familiar with some of the ‘New’ things around as well as getting to better grips with your computer. The course will be determined largely by the needs of the participants. Small groups of up to 8 will explore computers, iPads and smart phones, and could include learning more about shopping on the Internet including using eBay, Gumtree and Amazon, using PayPal and other payment methods. Explore Facebook and Twitter etc. There will be two courses with the same content – Mondays and Fridays, both at 10.00 at Kingston Hub (behind Kingston Beach Hall). Richard Lim is the coordinator at the Kingston Beach Digital Hub. The hub is a place for Kingborough residents to gain digital skills needed to enjoy the benefits of the NBN, when it is available to them. The digital hub will also allow residents to experience the NBN. Richard has over 15 years in the IT industry. Monday 11:30 – 12:30 A3 Meditation – A Mixture of Methods Neil Hore This course features new audio guidance of different techniques and approaches to meditation. There will be some further exploration of the various traditions and adaptations of them for the West including the benefits of Group Practice. There will be a chance for questions and discussion as needed. The course is suitable for everyone (including non-meditators). Neil has 30+ years of exploring different traditions and approaches to mental focusing. He has a background in teaching and assisting with meditation retreats. Monday 11:30 – 1 pm A1 Film and TV Critics Marian Hearn We may not be a Margaret or David but we are all critics. We know what we like and don’t like. This course will enable us to discuss our views and work out just why we like some things and not others. The course may include (optional) visits to the Cinema and will involve watching some TV programs, both at home and recorded as well as films on DVD which we will later discuss. Marian Hearn has been a member of U3A almost since inception and has tutored many classes.

Monday 1:00 – 2:30 A1 Mae’r Gymraeg yn Hawdd – Welsh is Easy! - Beginners Peter Ball Welsh is the strongest of the existing Celtic languages and these sessions introduce the spoken language of today, with light relief from music, video, etc about Welsh culture. We began Term 1 with a prize-winning course “Say Something in Welsh” (www.saysomethinginwelsh.com) which has the learner speaking informal everyday Welsh from the very start and developing confidence. CDs or cassettes are available for those without home internet. Subject to agreement among those who studied in term 1, for term 2 we will switch to another beginner's course, Catchphrase, from BBC Wales, which presents a more formal variety of Welsh. If you have any questions about the Welsh for Beginners course, contact Peter (Ph. 6239 1265, email [email protected]) before enrolling. Peter, from Bristol, had a Welsh father and English mother. He studied psychology in Hull and Belfast before lecturing in Uganda, and then specialised in social psychology, psycholinguistics and related fields at the University of Tasmania. He enjoys choral singing, art and everything about language. Monday 1:30 – 2:30 A2 Keyboard Jan Mills Class Limit: 5 If you’ve always wanted to be able to make your own music, here’s a quick way to learn on this 10-week course. The one hour lessons include learning to get the best out of your keyboard through both individual and group tuition. Students must have their own keyboard and stand to bring to each class. There is an additional cost of $25 to cover essential music book – NO tutor fees. Jan has held Keyboard Classes at U3A on two previous occasions and after 10 weeks her students had advanced so much that they were able to present a concert at the end of the term! Jan is the only known teacher to use this method in Tasmania. Her credentials include personal tuition from the Yamaha Music Foundation which resulted in her being the first instructor to introduce class tuition at Fords Music Centre in Brisbane. She is also an accomplished Church and Theatre Organist. Monday 2:30 – 4:30 A1 Welsh Continuation Guy and Margaret Nicholson This course is aimed at those who have completed a beginners’ course or have some proficiency in Welsh and want to improve their command of spoken Welsh. There will be an opportunity for class members to speak about various topics in Welsh and to engage in conversation. A range of contemporary resources will be provided and some time will be devoted to grammar each week. Articles from the adult learners’ magazine, Lingo Newydd will be used regularly for reading and discussion. There will also be some focus on listening to and singing Welsh songs. Margaret comes from Anglesey in North Wales and is a native speaker of Welsh. Marg’s strength is colloquial Welsh and she is keen to help students with pronunciation and support them in developing confidence in speaking the language. Guy has a teaching background and has learned to communicate in Welsh over a number of years. Tuesday 10:30 – 11:30 A1 Book Club Self-managed course, Chair Bronwen Parr For the first four weeks of term individual Book Club members will be talking about the selection of books they have read over the break, or a chosen author and their works. Starting in the 5th week we will study, as a group, the life and works of Australian author Geraldine Brooks. Geraldine was a reporter, journalist and novelist. She won the Pulitzer Prize in 2006 for her novel March. Her other novels include Calebs Crossing, Year of Wonders, People of the Book, and Nine Parts of Desire. Much discussion should come out of reading these books!

Tuesday 11:45 – 12:45 A1 Have Your Say Jennie Clarke This lively group has been successful for many years. The members, seated in a circle, discuss a wide range of topics that affect our every-day lives. Topics range from politics, world events, science, humanities and religion; you name it. Sometimes controversial, the rules are maintained with respect for others' opinions and challenging discussion is encouraged. Each participant has an opportunity to speak without being interrupted, as well as expressing any discomfort about others' opinions. Confidentiality within the group assures members that their opinion stays in the room, thus allowing them to speak freely on the issues involved. Jennie co-ordinates this group and she aims to make sure that everyone sticks to the rules and has their say. Jennie has been a member of U3A for five years and before retirement was a nurse, communications group leader and a marriage guidance counsellor. Tuesday 1:30 – 2:30 A1 The History Writers of Ancient Greece Anthony Boden This course will examine the works and lives of the great historians of antiquity: Herodotus, Thucydides, Xenophon and Polybius. These were extraordinary men. We shall look at their aims, their methods, their respective strengths and weaknesses, and, in the process review the historical background. Join us as we gauge the contribution made by these men to the writing of history. See the Greeks and the world from a very Greek perspective. Anthony Boden attended the University of Tasmania in the 1970’s, where he majored in Ancient Civilisations and European History. He is passionate about his work as a teacher. Tuesday 1:30 – 3:30 A2 Creative Writing Jennie Clarke This course will give the members the opportunity to creatively tap their brains and put it all into the written word. It will concentrate on the method and style of writing, with continuous class evaluation. It is also expected that Jennie Clarke's work will also be criticised, thus making the class a joint effort, while helping all members to take a closer look at their own style. Jennie prefers to work in a positive and easy-going style and welcomes newcomers and inexperienced members, who just have a yearning to write. She began writing only eight years ago, has written two books and will use the skills of the experts to maximise her tuition. Wednesday 9:00 Field Bushwalkers Tas Boskell The walks will be on established tracks and trails about the uplands and coasts around Hobart and occasionally further afield. Duration will be 3 to 5 hours. Participants must have a reasonable fitness level. Please bring lunch, water and a first aid kit. The meeting place for the first walk is the Denison Street car park on Wednesday 19th June. Be there in time to leave at 9:00am. New members to this group please phone Tas Boskell on 6229 2506 prior to the start of term. Wednesday 9:30 Field Ramblers and Strollers Coral Wilson Class Limit: 20 Join us for easy 1½ to 2 hour walks enjoying nature and fresh air on local and rural tracks and trails for an invigorating, healthy, social activity, ending in a welcome cuppa nearby. Meet in the Denison Street car park at 9:15am, ready to leave by 9.30am. There you will need to complete or update indemnity forms before we take our first walk. You will also receive a list of walks and details on how the group will operate. Car pooling is organised on the morning of the walks.

Thursday 10:00 – 11:00 (First four weeks starting 20th June) A1 Photography Paul Dalton The course will be an abbreviated version of the course run in previous years and will cover the essential points of getting the best from your digital camera. Participants will need to be familiar, and comfortable, with their camera’s menu. Paul's interest started at school where he was president of the school’s photographic society. Currently he runs the Hobart Probus club’s photographic group. Paul’s previous U3A photographic courses have been well received. Thursday 10:00 – 11:00 (18th July) A1 A Layman’s Guide to the Technical Side of the NBN Jim Palfreyman There is a lot of hot air floating around the media regarding the NBN. This talk will explain (in simple terms) the technical and practical side of the various options proposed by the politicians and what they mean for you and future generations. This will not be a talk about politics or economics, but you will leave with a better understanding of the difference between what you have now (most likely ADSL), compared with "fibre to the node", and "fibre to the premises". Jim has a Masters in Astrophysics, an Honours degree in Computer Science and a degree in Mathematics. He works professionally in the telecommunications industry and is a teaching assistant at the University in Mathematics. He is currently a Ph.D. candidate studying pulsars. Thursday 10:00 – 11:00 (Five weeks starting 25th July) A1 Politics for Better or Worse Derek Verrell Since the fall of the former Soviet Union, the future of liberal democracy seemed assured. Since then the so called Arab Spring saw further gains for democratic processes. However in the established democracies discontent with politics seems to have grown. This unit will explore some of the reasons for 'our winter of discontent' with politics and suggest, that while things may not be as bad as they seem, there may be some modest proposals for improvement. Since his retirement Derek has lived in Woodbridge. He has given many interesting courses for U3A. Thursday 10:00 – 11:00 A3 Listen to Music John Culliton The thing about the people who created the material for our music program is this: they devoted their lives to the job. They gave their all. Some of them were blind, some of them were on their death beds, and at least one of them, some say the greatest, was deaf - if you don’t mind. But there they were, and some still are, beavering away to leave us this extraordinary treasure. Every Thursday morning our collection of mere U3A mortals gathers to dip into the trove of sound, from the simple to the sublime. What an amazing opportunity! Thursday 11:30 – 12:30 A1 Let’s Spin Even More Yarns Chair: Adrian Dean This is a chance to share memories and experiences on a different topic each week in a very relaxed way amongst friends in a circle of chairs. Contributions will be kept brief. As Glen is away this term, U3A Kingborough member Adrian Dean will act as moderator.

Thursday 11:30 – 12:30 A3 Forgotten but Outstanding Gifford Causon The past has seen many outstanding people; people such as Matthew Boulton and Edith Cavell who have often been forgotten. Many of these people also knew each other and those connections formed a stream of encouragement and knowledge which I find exciting. Another course from Gifford - always enlightening.

Thursday 1:30 – 2:30 A1 Family at War Marcus Higgs Last term we screened ‘The Lucky Ones’ and the ‘Flesh and Blood’’ DVDs from Series 3 of this dramatic family wartime story. They showed how the events of WW2 affected various members of a working class family in Liverpool, the emphasis being on life on the home front. Over the first seven weeks we should finish the series, the final two DVDs being entitled ‘Thicker than Water’ and ‘Coming Home’. You don’t need to have seen the earlier episodes, but if you'd like to borrow them there are DVDs and two books available. We will finish off the term with DVDs from another popular series chosen by the class. Thursday 1:30 – 2:30 A3 Poetry for Pleasure Self-managed course, Chair Dorothy Mitsakis Do you enjoy reading and listening to poetry? Then this might be for you. Lovers of poetry come together each week to read, hear and share their favourite poems in an informal and relaxed atmosphere. Perhaps you might have an original piece that you might like to share with the group? The first week’s theme will be Nature. Please bring along one or three shortish poems. They may be serious, funny, or whimsical but do come and enjoy! Friday 10 am Kingston Beach Hub New Technologies Richard Lim Class Limit: 8 Confused by New Technologies? Here is your chance to become familiar with some of the ‘New’ things around as well as getting to better grips with your computer. The digital hub will also allow residents to experience the NBN. Richard has over 15 years in the IT industry. WOODBRIDGE COURSES Monday 1:30 – 3:30 Westwinds Readers and Writers Sue Moss The Readers and Writers group is open to anyone with an interest in writing styles including poetry, prose, memoir and young adult fiction. If you have an interest, passion or curiosity about words and language then step through the door bringing your ideas, thoughts, tragedies, triumphs, work in progress and laughter.
