I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land

of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; you shall have no other

gods before me. Exodus 20:2-3

Gathering regularly to worship the Triune God is the central act of

faith for the life of the Christian. Through worship (receiving forgiveness

of sins, hearing scripture read and proclaimed, and experiencing Holy

Communion and Baptism) faith is nurtured and strengthened. This faith

is life-giving and life-changing. It affirms who and whose we are and

sends us into the world to give hope and life to others.

Yet increasingly, Sunday worship has become for many irrelevant on

the one hand and an impossibility on the other. Let me explain:

Worship as Irrelevant. It isn’t news that increasingly our culture

does not support the Christian faith or assist in telling the Biblical

narrative. Many are unfamiliar with what the Bible says. Worship

services—the liturgy, the hymns, the prayers and yes, also the sermon—

have been created with the unspoken assumption that people know (in

an overall sense) the grand Biblical narrative of the Triune God’s

creative and redeeming work revealed most fully in Jesus Christ. So if a

person comes to worship and is unfamiliar with the Biblical story and its

language, what does worship mean to them as they worship and what

does it mean for their lives when they leave? Is it relevant?

Sunday Worship as Impossibility. We live in a 365/24/7 world

globally connected via the Internet. The world and marketplace never

shut down. We accept employment opportunities whenever we can get

them: second and third shift, weekends, holidays, jobs that require

extended travel, etc. Additionally, meaningful activities for our

children—athletics, the arts, learning experiences, etc.—now take place

every day of the week-including Sunday. For many persons, it isn’t that

they don’t want to worship on Sunday—they would if they could—they

simply can’t.

This month, your church council will have its annual retreat to

prayerfully develop cohesive strategies in response to these challenges. I

ask every member of Trinity to be in prayer for them and for our faith

community. We claim Jesus’ promise to be with us always even to the

end of the age. We trust that, guided by the Holy Spirit, we will develop

creative strategies to make worship at Trinity life giving and available

for as many persons as possible. We’ll do this together—called, claimed

and sent by God into the world God loves so much.

Transformed by God’s grace,

Pastor Tom

Baptism

Adults who desire to be baptized, or those who want to have their child

baptized, are invited to contact the church office. In the case of Adult

Baptism, candidates are encouraged to worship and attend a Sunday morning Bible Study. Those

who want to have their child baptized are asked to schedule a Baptism Preparation session with

Pastor Tom prior to the baptism. P.T. looks forward to talking with you! Please speak with him if

you have questions.

Saturday Morning Bible Study

May 11th and 25th, 8:30-10:00am

Upstairs in the main Sunday School area

Making Sense of the Cross, invites us to “listen in” on an open conversation about the cross

and encourages us to think about and experience the cross and its meaning for our lives. There is

no expectation of certain prior knowledge of the Bible or theology. Just bring your questions and

openness to talk about matters of the cross and resurrection of Jesus. It is not necessary to

attend every session. Come as you are able to enjoy morning coffee and conversation. Bring a

friend! For additional information, contact Tammie at 654-3256 or [email protected].

Sunday's Com'n

Each Wednesday morning at 8:30am, gather with Pastor Tom in the Gathering Space to

reflect on the scripture reading for the coming Sunday. No experience necessary. We read the

text and share how it makes us feel and the thoughts and questions it generates. It's all good!

Taize Service of Prayer

Join us for prayer, meditation, song and renewal on Tuesday, May 14th at

7:00pm. This 40 minute worship experience offers a mid-week opportunity to

place your joys and concerns before God and be strengthened by the Holy Spirit.

Beginning in June, this service will be offered weekly. Give it a try—you’ll be glad

you did!

Affirmation of Baptism

During the 10:15am service on May 5th, we give thanks to God for the following young adults

who will affirm their faith. Please keep them and their families in your thoughts and prayers.

Their witness of faith strengthens our own!

Leah Blanchard, Lauren Haines, Andrea Quets, Tyler Nance, Tommy Smith

Habitat for Humanity is Here!

On Sunday, May 19th at 9:15am during the

education hour, Kenosha's Habitat for Humanity

board member, Rev. Carl Johnson, will be at

Trinity to share information about this life

changing organization and how you can

participate. Grab a cup of coffee and a friend and

come. We'll meet in the Adult Education room on

the second floor.

Youth—Help Needed

A Youth Encounter group will be arriving May

18th at 4:00pm that afternoon. They need to be

housed for the evening and fed dinner. There is a

team of 5 young adults—2 females and 3 males.

They can be split up. On Sunday, May 19th they

will come to church for breakfast, do a program

with the youth—how the music today affects this

generation—eat lunch and then they will be on

their way home. If your household can

accommodate one or more guests that would be

fantastic! You can call Sue Torres at 262-515-

1844 or e-mail [email protected]. Thanks

again! Peace, Sue Torres

Pancreatic Cancer Fundraiser

The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network,

otherwise known as Pan Can, is having an event

called Purplestride, a walk/run that raises

money to aid research of pancreatic cancer. The

event will take place at Miller Park on Saturday,

June 1st. Registration begins at 11:00am and the

closing ceremonies will commence at 1:45pm.

Ann Harms, a pancreatic cancer survivor and

member of Trinity, will be walking to raise

money. There will be a donation box in the

Gathering Space through Sunday, May 19th. Any

checks should be made out to the Pancreatic

Cancer Action Network. There will also be pledge

sheets, so if families are interested in

participating in the walk/run they can get

sponsors to raise additional money for the cause.

If anyone has any unanswered questions, they

can contact Ann Harms at 262-764-9110.

Shalom Center Walk Against

Hunger

The Shalom Center is holding their 17th

Annual Walk Against Hunger on May 18th at

Veteran’s Park (54th Street and 6th Avenue). The

registration will be at 9:00am and the walk

starts at 9:30am. The distance is a 1 or 3 mile

walk.

There will be awards for the youngest walker,

oldest walker, highest individual fundraiser,

highest group fundraiser and group with the

most walkers.

If interested, a sign up sheet will be in the

Gathering Space at the church or you can contact

Cathleen Warren at 262-658-1713 x107 or email

Cathleen at [email protected].

#newchurch:

What’s in a name?

Our Worship and Music Ministry team has courageously been offering a monthly non-traditional

worship service by the name “New Traditions”. The name was meant to distinguish this service from

traditional as well as contemporary forms of worship because we wanted it to be, well, new. But the

team has come to feel this name lacks a certain energy.

So in April, they re-named the service #newchurch. This name is inspired by the courageous first

settlers of our country who came from distant lands and began naming places after those with which

they were familiar: New England, New York, etc…

In the digital era, many of us find ourselves in a new world without ever having left home!

Persons have left the church or never entered it in the first place.

#newchurch, guided by the Holy Spirit and grounded in Lutheran theology, seeks to explore new

ways that church and worship can be experienced in the digital world we find

ourselves. #newchurch is the primary evangelistic strategy for Trinity for the next three years. All

are welcome to attend with the target audience being those on the margins or outside of our

worshipping community.

#newchurch will continue to be held in the Great Hall and we will continue to offer traditional

worship services in the sanctuary.

So please pray for the church as a whole and for #newchurch. That God would receive this

offering of worship and bless it with God’s presence and guidance. #newchurch: for the

spiritual and religious.

Dear members of Trinity,

March was a great month

for giving; we had enough

funds to pay our bills.

Thank you all for keeping

up with your Unified Giving

and Debt Reduction.

Just a reminder that

March had five Sundays

including the Easter giving.

That is why our giving was

so high in March.

Thanks,

Financial Stewardship

Beginning the first Sunday in May the Care for Creation team will be collecting empty ink

cartridges for recycling. Over 13 cartridges are discarded in the U.S. every second, according

to CartridgeFundraising.com.

That's hundreds of millions of cartridges that end up in landfills every year, made with

plastics that can take at least 1,000 years to decompose. Not a good thing.

Please deposit your ink cartridges in the receptacle in the entry hallway.

Care for Creation

The Social ministry and CUSH committee will

meet on the first Sunday of the month, in the

church library between services at 9:10am. The

next meeting will be on May 5th.

Please remember Cans for CUSH on May 5th.

Please drop off any bagged aluminum cans in the

back hallway of the church on the first Sunday of

each month. The recycling money will benefit

CUSH.

Social Ministry has the following events during

May: Cupboard Bound food ministry and the

Shalom Center soup kitchen as well as the annual

CUSH banquet.

Thank you to everyone who helped and

contributed items for the Bingo party at the Dayton

Residential Care Facility in April.

The CUSH annual banquet is on

May 9th. Tickets may still be available

for the first few days of May. If you are interested

in attending, please call Jay Labedz at 654-8852.

The CUSH Rummage Sale is Coming! Time

to start cleaning out the closets, basement and

attic! The annual CUSH rummage sale will be held

in the Great Hall on Saturday, June 15th from 9:00

to 1:00. Items may be dropped off at the church on

Thursday and Friday, June 13th and 14th from 4:00

to 6:30 pm. If you cannot get your items over to

church, please call Jay Labedz at 654-8852 to

arrange for a pick up.

ELCA Concludes Haiti Hurricane Relief Efforts

The ELCA has concluded its relief and recovery efforts in Haiti following the January 2010

earthquake - the most powerful to strike Haiti in more than 200 years.

Nearly 250,000 people were killed, 300,000 injured and more than 1 million people were left homeless

as a result of the earthquake. Through Lutheran Disaster Response, ELCA members responded by

donating more than $12.5 million dollars to support relief efforts, which were conducted in partnership

Memorials and Gifts

Offerings were given in memory of Wayne Haney towards the Sound System

from Jim and Judy Glover, towards the Unified Fund from Linda McKinney, and

towards the Memorial Fund from David and Theresa Ness and Marie Larson.

Offerings were given in memory of John Hrupka, father of Lisa Hrupka, towards

Worship and Music Committee Fund from John and Sue O’Day.

Offerings were given in memory of Kathy Baas’ mother towards Worship and Music Committee

Fund from John and Sue O’Day.

An offering was given in memory of Jennifer Badertscher, daughter of Jack and May Harris,

towards the Worship and Music Committee Fund from John and Sue O’Day.

An offering was given in memory of David Slagoske, nephew of Judy and Jim Glover, towards the

Learning Ministry, from John and Sue O’Day.

An offering was given towards the Worship and Music Fund in honor of Pete Pierce’s 81st

birthday from his wife Peggy.

Total offerings received: $701

with the Lutheran Church in Haiti and The Lutheran World

Federation.

Funds provided by ELCA members supported immediate and long-term recovery that rebuilt

communities, and restored and sustained lives.

In Gressier, located near the Haitian capital of Port au Prince, new community centers were built to

provide space for training and education projects established by the Lutheran Church in Haiti. These

projects include vocational training to teach workers how to build homes that are stronger and more

disaster-resistant and a Montessori-based primary school.

In addition to these projects, there are income-generating endeavors such as a dairy that sells yogurt

processed from locally-produced milk, guest house facilities for visitors to the church and a factory that

creates and sells vibrated cement blocks. These sturdy blocks were used for the construction of each of

these facilities and other rebuilding efforts.

The Lutheran Church in Haiti anticipates that these projects will generate income “not only for

people in this community, but also for the church. Part of the income (to be) generated will come back to

the church for mission and evangelism. So, it is really important to celebrate all the things that have

been enabled by the funds that ELCA members have provided,” said Rodriguez.

ELCA funds sent to Lutheran World Federation supported the federation’s construction of a newly

created community called The Gressier Model Village with 150 homes and a community center -- all

built to resist earthquakes and hurricane-force winds and rain. Families started moving into the village

this spring. Dr. Carl Stecker, ELCA director for global diakonia, attended the February 2013 dedication

ceremony and toured the community.

The ELCA’s long-term relief providing housing, education and life-skills training “is a very

affirmative way of accompanying the people in Haiti. Not only in the immediate (aftermath), but in a

way that will have long-lasting effects,” said Rodriguez.

In the midst of the recovery efforts, disaster funds were also provided to help contain an outbreak of

cholera. The church responded to the epidemic by establishing programs to teach Haitians about the

causes of cholera and ways to prevent the spread of the disease. The program continues through a grant

from ELCA World Hunger.

The ELCA: One of the first organizations to respond to disasters and one of the last to

leave. Thanks be to God for your support and for Trinity’s faithful benevolence giving to the

wider church.
