There are hundreds of chicken breeds in existence. Domesticated for thousands of years, distinguishable breeds of chicken have been present since the combined factors of geographical isolation and selection for desired characteristics created regional types with distinct physical and behavioural traits passed on to their offspring. The physical traits used to distinguish chicken breeds are size, plumage colour, comb type, skin colour, number of toes, amount of feathering, egg colour, and place of origin. They are also roughly divided by primary use, whether for eggs, meat, or ornamental purposes, and with some considered to be dual-purpose. In the 21st century, chickens are frequently bred according to predetermined breed standards set down by governing organisations. The first of such standards was the British Poultry Standard, which is still in publication today. Other standards include the Standard of Perfection, the Australian Poultry Standard, and the standard of the American Bantam Association, which deals exclusively with bantam fowl. Only some of the known breeds are included in these publications, and only those breeds are eligible to be shown competitively. There are additionally a few hybrid strains which are common in the poultry world, especially in large poultry farms. These types are first generation crosses of true breeds. There are hundreds of chicken breeds in existence. Domesticated for thousands of years, distinguishable breeds of chicken have been present since the

combined factors of geographical isolation and selection for desired characteristics created regional types with distinct physical and behavioural traits passed on to their offspring.

From the President’s Desk!

Dear Probians

WASN’T Neil Webb an interesting speaker at our last meeting? It surprised me that Darwin was so small, only about 4,000 people. Lara is considerably larger than that. It must have been terrible for them to have to endure so many bombings. I don’t think the people in southern Australia knew much about this at the time.

I am looking forward to hearing Lynn & Mike Waters speak at our next meeting. Are they going to bring chickens along to show us? We certainly have a lot of interesting people in our club. I would be very interested in having members tell us more of their life stories. We have already had some fascinating stories and I am sure there are many more. You could tell

your story as part of our regular Show and Tell segments or you could write it down and Jeff could print it in the Newsletter.

I was surprised to see that many of you have not visited our website. If you are not sure about how to do this, please ask. If you are familiar with using the Google search program, just type in Lara Probus and then click on the appropriate heading and press enter. You may get references to Brian Lara the cricketer or Lara Bingle, but Lara Probus will be there somewhere. If all of this is incomprehensible to you and you have a computer connected to the internet, let me know. In a previous life I used to teach computers to Primary children and I may be able to help you. If you haven’t got a computer or you are not connected to the internet you will have problems.

May I recommend going to the next Probus Dine-out? It’s at Cucina One 12 Restaurant: on Wed 29 May, Jeff says in the Newsletter that it’s at 18:00 but I say it’s at 6.00 pm. Jeff has an excellent review of he restaurant in his newsletter.

Welcome to our newest Probian Owen Heyland. I hope you enjoy your time in Probus. Owen is a long term resident of Lara and I’m sure he has a story to tell. How about it Owen?

Did you go to the opening of Lara’s new Museum? Perhaps we could go on a visit there as part of our Out and About. Restoration work has been excellent and it is a credit to Bisinella and the Lara Historical society. Did you know that Brenda and Jack Darcy who are Probus members used to live in the old building?

We have been persevering with the sound problem at our meetings. I think that we are getting better but there may be some more things that we can do to make it even better. Thanks to those who have given us feedback. I think we will continue facing east. This seems to be a little better and I will continue trying to improve my microphone technique. I hope to see you at our next meeting.
