Thoughts from the President…

“It’s been said that everlasting friends go long periods of time without speaking

and never question their friendship. These friends pick up phones just like they

spoke yesterday, regardless of how long it has been or how far away they live,

and they don’t hold grudges. They understand that life is busy and that you will

always love them.” ..................” Tho’ I did not write this, I am thankful you are

my friend!”

I was sent this by a friend back in Indiana that I have known for 44 years and it

just made me realize how true this is. I also feel that friendships that are not as

long as this one can also go long periods of time without speaking and still fit

the statement I received from my friend in Indiana.

Quilts for me are like that everlasting friend. I can look at some of the quilt pro-

jects that I have made and it is like I have never finished it because I can re-

member the planning and piecing that went into making the quilt, and this al-

ways brings back the feelings of comfort and joy that came from that particular

project. I sometimes even remember getting mad at the project because it was-

n’t coming out the way I had planned. This is similar to getting unset with your

friend put you always manage to mend the friendship just like you adjust the

material and pattern of your quilt.

The process of putting a quilt project together is like the process of building a

friendship. One meets the material or quilt pattern and there is something you

like about either the material or the pattern and you start to work with it. The

more you work with the elements of the pattern and the material the more they

become a part of your life. If processes of working the material and pattern are

such that you want to keep working on the quilt creation you realize you have

made a good friend.

As we all know it takes time to build a quilt project and as one is putting the

pieces of the pattern together and working with the designs and colors of the

materials to enhance the project we learn more and more about both the pat-

tern and material we are working with.

The next time you look at a quilt that you have made, think about all the time

and work you put into it that eventually made it feel like a friend. Quilts can be

just like that good friend that you haven’t spoken to in a long time because of all

the time and work that went into building that friendship.

QUILTING TIP OF THE MONTH

What is a fat quarter? A fat quarter is a 1/4 yard

cut of fabric that measures 18” x 20” (based on 40”

width of fabric) instead of the typical 9” x 40” one-

quarter yard cut. A fat quarter gives you the con-

venience to cut larger pieces of fabric than would be

possible from a regular 1/4 yard of fabric.

What Can I Cut from a Fat Quarter (18” x 20”)?

You can cut one of the following from a fat quarter:

99 - 2” squares 16 - 4-1/2” squares

56 - 2-1/2” squares 12 - 5” squares

42 - 3” squares 12 - 5-1/2” squares

30 - 3-1/2” squares 9 - 6” squares

20 - 4” squares 6 - 6-1/2” squares

Happy Quilting!

May Bazaar Item-Making Workshops

Something new is “blooming” in May. We are trying out the idea of scheduling both a morning and an after-

noon class on the same day. This will cut down on travel time and gas usage for members who come from the

Bend and La Pine areas and would otherwise be making two trips to and from Sunriver for the classes. Below

are details for the May classes.

We will be making both “Pie” Potholders and Mug Mats on Tuesday, May 7th from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm in

the Crescent Room at the SHARC. (The Pie Potholders look like blueberry pies and the Mug Mats are small

placemats designed to hold a mug and, perhaps, a cookie or other treat.) All materials for both classes are

provided. Just bring sewing machine and basic sewing supplies.

Two classes, a Four Fat-Quarters Table Runner taught by Michelle McMicken and a Jelly Roll Table Runner

taught by Judy Johnson, are scheduled for Thursday morning May 16th from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm in the

Crescent Room at the SHARC. After a short lunch break, the Crescent Room will remain open until 4 pm

for persons who would like to work on Bazaar UFO’s, including additional Paper-Pieced Note Cards and Or-

naments.

You can sign up for these classes at MMQ meetings or by e-mailing Judy Johnson

([email protected]). Details for June and July classes will be announced at upcoming classes

and detailed in the next newsletter.

WHAT’S IN A NUMBER?

I love numbers. There are some small numbers that appeal to me because of their mathematical

properties. That said, however, what I really like large numbers - especially when it comes to the

Sunriver Quilt Show.

Our Show is known for the beauty, variety, and quality of our quilts. Early in the process of discuss-

ing publicity ideas for the 2013 Show, we determined that it was feasible to advertise that 200 or

more quilts would be on display. After all, we displayed 198 at last year’s show. Surely we could get

at least three more this year! Then something occurred to me. After Linda Saukkonen’s “show and

tell” of doll quilts at the September meeting (and her encouragement to get us all involved in making

more) these small quilts began pouring in. Mary Klein, alone, contributed 16 at one time and Linda

Heiney has made practically that many as well. Altogether we already have nearly one hundred such

quilts handed in. Let’s see: 198 quilts displayed last year; nearly 100 doll quilts already - that makes

a total of 300 a real possibility this year. Let’s try to make it a reality!

Look through your finished quilts and pick a few of your favorites to plan on displaying this year.

We love quilts of all sizes, shapes and styles. Visitors enjoy seeing the work of beginning quilters

(and reading their stories) as much as they admire the work of very experienced quilters. Get out

your UFO’s and challenge yourself to finish and contribute one or more. (I promise you, it will feel

good.) If you are participating in the “Flub Fabric” Challenge make sure you finish your quilt. Make a

few doll quilts with blocks left over from other projects. Make a simple “whole cloth” doll quilt with

a juvenile fabrics and trim it with rick rack, stitchery, or other embellishments. Sign up for the doll

quilt item-making workshop on June 17th and learn how to make little quilts using small squares. You

get the idea!

What’s in the number 300? A lot of work; a lot of fun; and a big promise of another exciting and

successful quilt show. We can do it!
