Attn: KAnSAS AGentS The Kansas Department of Insurance issued a bulletin about the increasing number of complaints involving life and health insurance ads produced and distributed by third-party marketing firms. The bulletin clarifies insurance companies and their Agents are responsible for the content of ads distributed directly and on their behalf, including ads originating with third-party, noninsurance entities. Remember, any ad you create or have created by an ad agency, designer, marketing firm, etc., used to solicit sales of UA products must be reviewed by the Home Office Advertising Committee for compliance. (See ‘Advertising Guidelines’ on the ‘uageneralagencyoffice’ website.)

Affected Agents must review the FUA2086 annuity training document at www.firstunitedamerican.com/office, ‘Downloads,’ ‘Annuities’, ‘Annuity Product and Annuity Suitability Training’.

WordS oF AppreciAtion It’s always gratifying to know we’re helping you to increase your recruiting and sales. After all, that’s what we’re here for! Here are a few comments the Home Office received recently:
From Mike Stevens, Farm and Ranch Healthcare, Inc.: “Hey Guys ... I just want to say ‘Thank you’ to everyone. Great meeting! I really think the $3,000 Accidental Death Policy is an excellent opportunity. A special thanks from me to Chuck, Danielle, and Marty for putting it all together!”
From O.A. Clark, Clark & Associates Insurance Agency, Inc.: “Just want to thank you again for all your help and for my new lead contract with UA. The money provided by UA is just great! How can you go wrong with the best Medicare Supplement Company in America? And the bonus lead money - WOW! I have placed a direct lead mail order with TARGETLEADS, and anticipate new sales soon. I am excited again about selling insurance and look forward to selling all UA products.”
From webinar attendee, Sue Simpson: “Excellent webinar - it is nice to be associated with a wonderful Company headed by an experienced, knowledgeable, and talented staff that promotes the Company, its products, and creates success. back to the Future ...With so much new talent contracting with United American and First United American in the past several months, this seems like the perfect time to use our center spread to look back at how UA developed into the great Company it is today. After all, if Marty McFly in Back to the Future hadn’t gone back in time 30 years, he would not have been able to positively impact his future ... and think of all those fun sequels we would have missed! Seriously, knowing our past helps us to make better decisions about our future, and making good decisions for ourselves and our Company keeps us successful.
One thing I’ve learned over the years is that the only constant in life and business is change, so this also seems an appropriate time to review the changes we’ve put in place in the past few years. In most cases, change is good; it’s healthy to look at other ways of doing things. It’s productive to think outside the box. It’s exciting to implement new types of training and look at new approaches to selling. We’ve done all that and more in just a few short years. Let’s review:
Applications: Technology has given Florida UA Agents and First UA Agents the ability to submit Medicare Supplement applications via eApp. Other changes concerning applications are in the works, so watch for more information in June Summit.
Webinars: Two Wednesdays each month we offer general training webinars and also assist with personalized webinars for General Agents. Contact your Director to learn how we can assist your team.
Live Workshops: We hold live recruiting and training workshops around the country. We just completed two weeks of successful workshops in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, Ohio, and Pennsylvania and are holding additional workshops next month in Florida. (See pages 8 and 9 for recruiting tips and workshop photos.)
UAGA and First UA Agent Website: UA’s UAOnline and First UA’s ‘firstunitedamerican.com/office’ are the
hubs for sales and product information. Each site provides everything you need to market products, present products, and close the sale. And with the recent redesign of ’UA General Agency Office’, it is now easier and faster to locate what you need.
Ongoing Incentive for Direct Lead Mailers: When you sell only two Medicare Supplements in your first 60 days as an Agent, you receive 1,000 FREE Med-Supp direct lead mailers. Existing Agents who sell $10,000 over their best month since Feb. 2011, earn 1,000 FREE Med-Supp direct lead mailers. Agents who sell $20,000 over their best month since Feb. 2011, earn 2,000 FREE Med-Supp direct lead mailers. Now that’s a deal!
Outdoor Adventure Dream Giveaway Sweepstakes: When Agents submitted a Medicare Supplement application, it earned an entry into this fantastic sweepstakes. The drawing is at the end of this month, and I hope we can report in the next issue of Summit that one of our own is the BIG winner.
Prorated Convention Requirements: Agents who contract after Feb. 1, 2012, have a reduced qualification period and a reduced production requirement for the Convention held in 2013. When they contract and produce at a six-month production level, they can be eligible for the next Convention.
Double Convention Credit: During the second quarter through June 30, 2012, UA Agents can earn DOUBLE Convention credit selling underage 65 health products* - critical illness, cancer, hospital indemnity, accident, and MMGAP. Expand the products you offer and expand your potential to qualify for Convention 2013 in sunny San Diego.
UA has an admirable history, and we will continue to make sure that its future is just as spectacular by doing all we can in the Home Office to help you facilitate the sales process. Our future is bright, and I’m glad you’re part of it.

Torchmark Chairman and CEO, Mark S. McAndrew, will step down on June 1, 2012, as Chief Executive Officer, after 32 years of dedicated service to Torchmark. McAndrew will continue to serve in an executive capacity as Chairman of the Board of Directors through June 1, 2013.
The Torchmark Board of Directors has appointed Gary L. Coleman, Torchmark’s Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, and Larry M. Hutchison, Torchmark’s Executive Vice President and General Counsel, as Co-Chief Executive Officers effective June 1, 2012.

When Marty McFly finds himself 30 years in the past, his vivid tales of the future elicit an astounding “Great Scott!” from Doc Brown, the disheveled, white-haired inventor responsible for Marty’s unintentional time travel. Here at United American, we’re curious what we might find if we travel back in time a few decades – what would our UA predecessors think of the progress we’ve made? What could we tell them to expect in UA’s future?
Let’s hop into our own DeLorean and pay a visit to 1947 on our trek ‘Back to the Future’. Oh, and don’t worry – we picked up time travel insurance just the other day.
1981: We arrive on August 3, 1981, to learn UA has become a subsidiary of Liberty National Insurance Holding Company … soon to be known as Torchmark Corporation. It begins another new era for United American Insurance Company.
1947: We arrive in the year of our Company’s founding. “Welcome,” says C.L. Dunlap, United American’s founder. “This way,” he says. “There are a couple of people I’d like you to meet.”
Moments later, we shake hands with W.H. Coleman Jr., a CPA, and Kay Holt, Mr. Dunlap’s secretary – the 2nd and 3rd employees of United American.
But our visit to 1947 doesn’t last long. Mr. Dunlap explains they have an important meeting. The topic? How to grow United American into one of the leading supplemental health insurance companies in the country.
1955: Last time we saw C.L. Dunlap and Company, they sat in a cramped office discussing growth strategies. Now they’re in The Insurance Center, an office building in downtown Dallas. Employees throughout the 47,000-square-foot building are thrilled at the growth of the Company ... and the air conditioning.
Prior to completion of The Insurance Center, The News Flash, United American’s first magazine, features a photo of a jubilant C.L. Dunlap standing beside Dallas Mayor R.L. Thornton as the Mayor turns the first spade of dirt for United American’s new Home Office. “Every time a new building like this goes up, it means growth and progress for the city of Dallas,” said the Mayor. It also means growth and progress for United American.
1977: C.L. Dunlap, hair slightly whiter than when we saw him last, sits in his office with a smile on his face and a small sheet of paper in his hand. It’s a certificate confirming UA’s A+ (Superior) Financial Strength Rating by A.M. Best Company, awarded a few months prior to the Company’s 30th anniversary. Now, with another new building UA’s growth and progress has proved consistent since we saw C.L. 22 years ago.
The new United American Home Office has three times as much space as the old Insurance Center building. Home Office employee count has reached the 400 mark.
6 May 2012
1996: Things are looking familiar as we find ourselves back in McKinney, Texas, – the location of UA’s current Home Office. A new 140,000-square-foot building is more than enough to house UA’s 500 Home Office employees. United American has found the perfect spot to begin a prosperous 21st century.
2007: Torchmark affiliates including UA move into a new 150,000-square-foot addition adjacent to UA’s Home Office in McKinney. With the building expansion came Company consolidation, allowing UA and its Torchmark affiliates to run even more efficiently than before, something undeniably reflected in our increasing number of policyholders and growing annual premium.
2012 & Beyond: Our travel through time is over as we arrive back to the present. Meeting the founder of United American and seeing all the stops along the way was a memorable experience that afforded us a new perspective. What did we learn? United American is here to stay and stronger than it’s ever been. We’re proud of our Company’s heritage and of all those who had the foresight and courage to bring UA to where it is today, both employees and Agents. The future of UA holds great promise. C.L. Dunlap would be proud!

United American’s Senior Director, Ryan Sykes, recently completed a two-week series of live recruiting and training workshops in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri, and the turnout was phenomenal. There’s no doubt the pool of talent available today is the best it’s ever been, and the enthusiasm generated by attendees was nothing short of amazing. We are thrilled to have so many quality individuals interested in joining the ranks of United American.
Contact the Director in your area to learn how the Home Office can assist you in your recruiting efforts. Review the center spread of April Summit for a listing of Directors and their regions and more information on recruiting .
Emphasize to recruits ...More Agents mean more production. Increasing the members on your team increases your ability to reach more prospects ... and that means more sales.
Insurance sales is one of the highest paid professions. The potential for residual earnings sets the insurance industry apart from other commission sales. You continue to make money for sales you made years before. Once you establish a book of quality business and maintain persistency, the money keeps coming ... year after year. Add new sales annually, and there is no limit to what you can achieve.
Insurance sales is not a risky business. With commission sales, you are paid based on the time and effort you put in. You determine what you earn and are paid what you are worth. If you work hard and follow directions, your potential is limitless.
You don’t need previous insurance experience. You don’t even need previous sales experience. Being F.A.T. (Flexible, Adaptable, and Trainable), having the desire to succeed, and having the willingness and motivation to put in the time and effort to create success is what’s most important.
Beef up your Agency to beef up your image in the community. Do you want to be the ‘little insurance Agency around the corner’ or the dynamic team of insurance professionals who offer a strong portfolio of quality life and health products? The larger your organization and the more active you are within the community, the more credibility and interest you develop.
New recruits provide a new perspective. Injecting new blood into your Agency may encourage your veteran Agents to consider new technologies and new approaches to prospecting or selling. Your veterans can help the new Agents gain confidence and basic selling skills. It’s a win/win for both groups!
Recruiting isn’t difficult. With the economic slowdown, there is an abundance of talented people in the job market looking for an opportunity to be successful. You only have to give it to them.
