Most Gracious and Generous Christians

Sidney and Prema Gnann were beloved participants at Lutheridge senior weeks for decades. They would attend senior week in June that was hosted by their good friend, the Rev. Kenneth Webb, and then return in October to enjoy the fall colors in the mountains.

Summer youth camp was in session during the senior week in June. Sidney and Prema were very impressed with the summer staff, especially how they served as positive Christian role models for campers. A Four Bucket Strategic Plan

Reflections of the Executive DirectorIn August 2010 the LLMI Board of Trustees started a planning process to help board and staff take a fresh look at ministry opportunities and to think strategically on how the Gospel of Jesus Christ could most effectively be shared in today’s world through Lutheridge† Lutherock†Lutheranch and Luther Springs.

The result is a strategic plan that is led by four executive staff members. The addition of Lisa Spitler, VP of Program, prompted a “four-bucket” approach to the plan: 1) finance and support services (behind the scenes work); 2) advancement (marketing, fund raising and outreach), 3) program (program directors and serving guests), and 4) the fourth bucket that I am responsible for together with the Board of Trustees:

1 Stewardship of Resources. Susan Troutman, VP of Finance and Support

Services, will address stewardship of land, facilities and resources entrusted to LLMI’s care. We will study a conservation easement at Lutherock to preserve the wilderness nature of the site while

providing financial resources. This bucket will also address land usage, cost analysis and efficiencies in operations.

2. New Lines of Business. Pastor Mike Ward, VP of Advancement,

is implementing campaigns for Lutheranch and Lutheridge, and building endowments that could fund Program Director and summer counselor positions through planned gifts. Leveraging

technology and developing a comprehensive social media strategy are also part of the bucket.

3. Program Growth. Lisa Spitler, VP of Program, will emphasize continuing the

quality of programs with special attention to identifying new opportunities. LLMI and LOMF have a great core of programs, but Lutheran demographics are changing, so expanding outreach to senior adults is

important. Already new programs are planned including a Choral Workshop in August featuring Dr. Chris Sheppard, Director of Choral Activities at Newberry College.

4. New Horizons. This is my area, along with the board. In addition to our core ministry of summer

camp, year round programs and hosted ministry, we will look “outside the box” at new opportunities and means of support to keep the ministry strong and serving as it has for 60 years. We will also look at new strategic partnerships with yet to be defined entities.

Strategic Plan 2015 is a sign that the Board of Trustees and staff are working diligently to not only maintain much loved and long serving programs, but to vigorously reach out to serve, to take advantage of new opportunities and to keep outdoor ministries strong and effective in Christ’s name.

It is a joy and privilege to serve with you.

Its camp and conference facilities are Lutheridge, 160 acres in Arden, NC, known for its summer camp and year-round ministry programs; and Lutherock, 709 acres on Sugar Mt., near Newland, NC, known for its rugged, outdoor adventure ministry and Lutheranch, 519 pristine acres in Tallapoosa, GA

New Entrance Road For Lutheranch

While at Lutheranch on March 9-10, 2012, the LLMI Board of Trustees met with the Lutheranch Construction Team. Authorization was given to install the new entrance road and to do grading for building pads and parking lots for both the Multiple-Use Retreat Center and Dining Hall. The new road will permit guests to enter the site off of Salem Church Road, just 8 miles and 12 minutes from I-20, The road will bring guests to the new Multiple Use Retreat Center, which will be constructed with proceeds from “Standing on the Promise” campaign to build the future of Lutheranch.

Jonathan Frock, LLMI’s Sr. Facilities Consultant, indicated that grading costs are so low right now, it is cost effective to undertake all the grading which will save substantial funds in the future. Frock is supported in his work by a group of professionals from Alabama and Georgia who serve on the Construction Team including John Didicher, Mike Mynhier and Ken Hyde of Marietta, Georgia; Sylvia Negri of Haralson County Georgia; Barry Luther and Paul Schabacker of Birmingham, Alabama and Bill Stender of Huntsville, Alabama. Weather permitting the work should be completed by the end of summer.

Pastor Mike Ward, Vice President of Advancement, indicated that major gift efforts for “Standing on the Promise” are being conducted in East Atlanta and the Savannah/

Effingham County area and will soon be completed in Huntsville and North Atlanta. Major gifts will move to South Atlanta in fall 2012 and to Tennessee in 2013.

Ward went on to say that congregational campaigns could begin as early as fall 2012 and will be coordinated by Sr. Development Associate, Libby Bedenbaugh, who indicated that 100 summer staffers from Lutheridge and Lutherock will attend the Southeastern Synod Assembly on Friday, June 1 to share their witness and enthusiasm for Lutheran

Outdoor Ministries and Lutheranch. Participants will experience first-hand through the staff what the future can mean for programs at Lutheranch.

If you are interested in helping or making a

gift to “Standing on the Promise Campaign” please contact Libby Bedenbaugh at [email protected], or call 803-940-6523.

An open house at Lutheranch is planned for Sunday, November 18, 2012, to tour site improvements and see future plans.

FAM (Familiarization) Events at Luther SpringsThanks to a very generous grant from an anonymous donor, lay people and clergy from all across Florida have been coming to Luther Springs to experience renewal in faith, rest and recreation. The donor is committed that more Lutherans in Florida will be able to experience the benefits from sharing in the newly expanded Kuehner Conference Center, which now features 18 comfortable guest rooms each with a private bath and the Schmertmann Meeting Room.

On February 27-28, Bishop Edward Benoway hosted 17 synod pastors

on a pre-Lenten retreat that was led by the Rev. Marcus Miller, president of Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, on the theme “preaching the six weeks of Easter.” Benoway (c) is pictured conferring with Miller (r) and a retreat participant. Only two of the pastors present had been at Luther Springs since the expansion of the Kuehner Conference Center and they were very impressed with the new construction! In September 2011, 51 youth directors and youth pastors were present for a FAM retreat to participate in LESS (Leading, Equipping, Sending, Serving) youth ministry training.

Upcoming FAM’s include a retreat hosted by the Older Adult Committee of the Florida/Bahamas Synod along with a retreat for female clergy, where the focus will be the book, The Sewing Room, a collection of essays by Barbara Cawthorne Crafton, an Episcopalian priest and mother. The retreat is being led by Pastor Rita Gardner-Tweed (813-230-4907, [email protected]) and Pastor Mary Peterson (850-375-2594, [email protected]), at a date still to be determined.

Jeremy Taylor Receives “Guest First” AwardThree years ago LLMI launched a special program called “Guest First,” modeled after Walt Disney World, that encourages staff to place guests at the forefront of everything they do at Lutheridge and Lutherock. The program was initiated after Pastor Mike Ward, VP of Advancement, spent part of his 2008 sabbatical attending the Disney Institute in Orlando, Florida.

Recently Jeremy Taylor, maintenance staff member, earned the award by first repairing the bus of Trinity Lutheran, Greenville, SC, so the group could go skiing. Then when the bus broke down a second time, he came in early on Sunday to repair the bus for the groups’ trip home. Ward had this to say, “LLMI is blessed to have Jeremy as part of the staff team; one of many who seeks to place the needs of guests first.”

New Swimming Pool Planned for Lutheridge

The Heritage Campaign is a $4 million endeavor to help preserve the future of Christ-centered ministry at Lutheridge by improving existing facilities. The campaign is seeking $2 million in both “now” commitments and planned gifts. With campaign efforts completed in South Carolina, totals have reached $1.2 million in gifts and $1.15 million in planned giving expectancies.

Gifts to the campaign have enabled Mission Hall and Lineberger Hall to be remodeled and the Gatehouse section of the entrance road to be resurfaced. LLMI board policy indicates that 90% of pledges and 50% of cash are needed before beginning a project. Funds permitting, Thornburg Hall will be remodeled in winter 2012/2013 and construction will begin on a new swimming pool in fall 2013. Campaign proceeds will also enable additional infrastructure upgrades at Lutheridge and a tithe of proceeds will go toward debt reduction for Lutheranch land.

The pool will be scenically set on the lower campus at Lutheridge, and it will be large enough to enable campers to swim more often while at camp. Staff alumni have made commitments totaling half of the $500,000 cost for a pool. David Troutman, coordinator of the staff alumni effort to raise funds for a new pool, had this to say, “As a counselor, I rarely thought further ahead than my campers’ next activity. Now, as a staff alumni, I feel a deep sense of purpose to join other alumni spanning six decades to help launch the new swimming pool that thousands of campers and other guests will enjoy for many years to come.” Funds permitting, the pool may include a water slide, spray fountain, geysers, volleyball, beach entry and a solar cover.

The Rev. Jan Setzler, campaign director, indicated that campaign efforts are now being conducted in North Carolina. If you are interested in helping or making a commitment which can be made over a five-year period to the Heritage Campaign, please contact Setzler at 864-942-2974, [email protected].

Enclosed is a check for my 2012 contribution on my Heritage Campaign pledge. I was at Lutheridge this past weekend for Wild Women Weekend and was able to enjoy some of the projects that have been completed. I am pleased to hear that the campaign is going well. God’s blessings to all of you.Nancy Clem

Volleyball Marathon Raises Funds for Low Ropes Course at Luther SpringsEighty youth and adults converged on Faith Lutheran Church in Sarasota for the annual Volleyball Marathon. Eight teams from seven church youth groups played volleyball from 8:00 pm on Friday, March 30, until breakfast the next morning. Teams paused at midnight for pizza and a worship service of Holy Communion led by host pastor, the Rev. Steve Winemiller. A team from Living Lord, Bradenton won the championship for a second consecutive year! Over $2,000 was raised to make repairs to four low ropes elements at Luther Springs, including the Wild Woozy, Mohawk Walk, Islands and All Aboard. The 2013 Volleyball Marathon is set to return to Faith Lutheran Church on April 12-13, 2013.

Luther Springs was recently the grateful recipient of two 15-passenger vans. One of the vans came from St. Timothy Lutheran, Tarpon Springs, Florida, which has been closely aligned with Luther Springs since the formation of LOMF. St. Timothy has sent numerous youth to summer camp, hosts a summer day camp, conducts an annual family retreat at Luther Springs and has been a strong financial supporter of outdoor ministry. The other congregation, Resurrection Lutheran, Kings Mountain, NC, has no background with Luther Springs. However, their pastor, the Rev. Hobby Outen, read of the need for vans in the LINK newsletter and wanted to help. A member, Nora Nelson, and her sister Billie drove the van from Kings Mountain, NC, to Luther Springs and had this to say about their experience: “My sister and I felt truly blessed to have the opportunity to deliver the van for Resurrection Lutheran Church to Luther Springs. The people there were so friendly and appreciative. Their hospitality and the lovely surroundings made our visit very enjoyable.” The gift of this van was arranged by the Rev. John Setzler, one of two LOMF Development Associates. The vans will be used to transport staff to day camp and to decentralized sites across Florida.

River Rat Ramble A Big Success! On March 2-4, 81 “River Rats” gathered at Camp Kulaqua in High Springs, FL, for a weekend of fellowship, worship, great music, and canoeing on the Santa Fe River.  Weekend highlights included the band Pancake Lovers Club from St. Petersburg, a presentation on religious music in a secular setting by Rich Langston, color wars/games, a campfire with semi-smore’s, a tour of the zoo on site, and closing Holy Communion worship service.  Current and former Luther Springs and Lutheridge counselors did a fabulous job of keeping the “rats” engaged and sharing the joys of Jesus’ love to all.  Plans are now being made for an additional ramble in 2013!  Keep looking for details to come!

efird hall at Lutheridge received a new roof during Easter week. The project was funded through the “refurbishment fund” which is an established reserve of approximately $3.00 from registration fees based on guest nights. This board-restricted fund is used to fund the wear and tear of aging facilities, vehicles, and equipment.

Lutheranch - Pictured at left are members of Furman LSA (Lutheran Student Association) from Furman University in Greenville, SC who volunteered their time working on the grounds at Lutheranch.

TIMESHELVETICA

Lutheridge+Lutherock Ministries benefits tremendously each year from hundreds of volunteers who serve for thousands of hours. According to Margo Rabon, Executive Assistant, who coordinates the work of office volunteers, “The LLMI ministry could not successfully function without these committed and gracious volunteers. They not only save funds, but they bring a passion and commitment to the ministry that makes a big difference.” Volunteers help in a variety of ways: serving on the board and committees, assisting with projects at the sites, and helping at the office answering phones, stuffing mailings and doing special projects.

Many thanks to the following individuals who are our regular Home Office volunteers :

Marge AukampCathy JanneyJohn Korner

Gillian LarsonNadine LloydPeggy Mann

Donna MarinoRev. Donald PooleKarla Trexler

Sandy vlahosDoris Wright

Sandy Vlahos and Doris Wright are pictured at left. They prepare account receivables, a responsibility that takes them approximately 12-20 hours per week. Vlahos has been volunteering in the office since May of 2004 and Wright has been volunteering since October 2000, and was the first person who responded to the request to serve as a volunteer in the home office. If you are interested in serving as a volunteer or if you would like additional information, please contact Margo Rabon at [email protected] or (828) 209-6327.

House for Sale at LutheridgeThe LLMI Board of Trustees is selling a house in the Lutheridge Residential Community at 49 Oakhurst Drive, Arden, NC. Proceeds will benefit the Heritage Campaign.

The house is 1,152 square feet on a .22 acre lot and includes three bedrooms, two bathrooms, living area, kitchen, screened porch, and fireplace. It is on one of the nicest interior lots at Lutheridge, located just across from the Lakeside cabins.

Call (828)684-2361 and ask for Pastor Mike Ward if you have any questions. Sealed bids are due at the Home Office, 28 Spruce Drive, Arden, NC 28704 by June 1, 2012, at noon. The minimum bid is $115,000.

Thrivent Choice Dollars According to Margo Rabon, LLMI Executive Assistant, receipts from Thrivent Choice Dollars totaled $27,920

through the first three months of 2012, which puts LLMI on target to increase 2011 receipts of $63,580. Lutheran

Outdoor Ministries of Florida has already received $5,649 in the first quarter of 2012 and received a total of $9,315 in

2011. The new Thrivent Choice program enables qualifying members to direct funds to LLMI, LOMF and other Lutheran institutions and congregations. Thrivent previously gave members the opportunity to have their contributions forwarded automatically each year, but has now revised guidelines, so members need to direct their funds each year. If you have questions on whether you qualify with Thrivent Choice Dollars, you may phone at 1-800-847-4836 or visit www.Thrivent.com/choice.

Rabon went on to say that donors can direct Thrivent Choice Dollars to Lutheranch, Lutherock, Luther Springs, or LLMI. All dollars will provide financial assistance for youth to attend camp, enable much needed site improvements and keep the entire ministry strong and serving.
