slhlHELLO

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about a Mother Earth, an antique and tropical plant store that was my first

job out of college. I loved it simply because it enabled me to continue nurturing a sincere appreciation of all things “green”. And the saying rang true for me, if you love what you do, it isn’t a job. Starting my own tropical plant and maintenance business was next in the cards for me. I “decorated” restaurants and hotels with beautiful plants and was then hired to take care of them. Remember all the hanging baskets in the Ponderosa Steak Houses and Perkins Pancake Houses…that was me, and the first St. Louis TGI Fridays on Olive was my installation too. But today, green embodies much more than green plants and their connection to the earth.

The key to “going green” is to be less dependent on energy, to recycle and to make local purchases a priority. Our trends department showcases gorgeous eco-friendly glass accessories hand blown from local artisans and recycled glass elements designed by entrepreneur women in Mexico (page 16). Have you ever thought about installing a green roof (page 24), incorporating wind power (page 72), transforming an old piece of furniture into a treasure (page 68) or planting a wildflower garden (page 58). These are just a few of the eco-friendly ideas we cover in this issue.

Outstanding design deserves recognition, and for our first-ever Architectural Finesse Awards (page 39), we have singled out eight sensational St. Louis design projects to share with our readers. Recognized for their architectural integrity and overall aesthetic appeal, the winning entries include a fabulous variety of newly built and remodeled living spaces. We thank the Kansas City architects, Scott Bickford, Rick Jones, Ron Stallbaumer and Wolfgang Trost, for their time and expertise in evaluating the submitted projects.

Eco-friendly and architectural inspiration are the buzz words this month. Let’s keep Mother Earth happy and healthy.

In friendship,

SLHL: Lower level remodels seem to be very popular nowadays as seen in the photo above. Is there any difference in choosing the perfect lighting for

this part of the house compared to other areas of the home?

Will: The lighting basics for any space are to take into consideration the homeowners’ lifestyle, taste and how they intend to live in each space. Next, I begin to establish layered lighting which is essential to a well lit room.

SLHL: What is layered lighting, and what makes it so important?

Will: Layered lighting is multi-level lighting including task lighting, accent lighting, grazing, down lighting, under cabinet lighting, toe kicks, spot lights and indirect lighting. What makes it so important is each has a purpose that contributes to the overall ambiance of the room. By shining down on the face of the fireplace, grazing has the ability to bring out the texture, depth and color of the stone on the fireplace as seen in the photograph above. And the wall sconces are effective in bringing middle level lighting to the room and providing an awesome effect on the stone. The beautiful floor shines with the installation of down lighting. By utilizing floor to ceiling lighting, each facet brings harmony to the living space.

SLHL: How did you achieve the dramatic lighting at the bar in this lower level?

Will: By installing two runs of indirect LED lights mounted to Lucite at a 45 degree angle, the light you see is reflected light off the high gloss white back bar.

SLHL: It is apparent that controlling so many lights in every room could evolve into a ritual every morning and night. So many devices and so little time, how could anyone accomplish this feat?

Will: If you are building a new home or retro-fitting an existing home, consider a whole house dimming system. A smartphone eliminates the multiple remotes you may have to use now and simplifies usage so anyone, really anyone,

can be in full control of many functions in your home. Through the same system, you can be away on vacation and dim the lights in your home or even raise and lower the window shades! Let’s say you are having a party; one touch and all your lighting dims 20%.

SLHL: It sounds like not only are you a lighting designer, but a lighting wizard! Is there one piece of advice you would give the homeowner contemplating lighting options?

Will: Yes…don’t cut corners on lighting! If you can’t see it…you can’t enjoy it.

See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

sing a palette of plants with varying textures, colors and forms, landscape architect Hunter Beckham composes a landscape that is as visually appealing as any Grand Master’s painting. His canvas? A roof. Many of his landscapes are installed on

the roofs of residences, garages, retail stores and commercial buildings. Beckham, a principal in the design team at SWT Design (www.swtdesign.com), specializes in sustainable landscape design and has a growing pile of awards to attest to his innovative vision. Projects combine his scientific knowledge of construction, sustainable practices and botany, along with his artist’s eye, to create a landscape that is both functional and attractive. Rooftop landscapes are just one aspect of his comprehensive sustainable landscape designs that are making heads turn all over the world.

A Green What? “A green roof is a complex thing,” says Beckham. “The aspects of hydrology allow water to soak in and drain at a slower rate, rather than rushing off into the sewer system. A green roof lessens the urban heat island effect, too.” A rooftop landscape becomes an ecological habitat that supports birds and butterflies. Decks and walkways can be installed for people to enjoy the garden and a superior view. These benefits are in addition to the added insulation effect for the homeowner, reducing both heating and cooling costs.

Building From The Roof Up “Structure is critical,” says Beckham. “The roof must be strong enough to support the extra weight from the soil and other components.” Depending on the structure, additional work may need to be done to strengthen the framing. “A green roof has five components. First is a protection membrane, which is critical for water drainage,” explains Beckham. Additional components include drainage material, filter fabric, soil and, finally, plants. “Soil can be anywhere from two inches to eight feet deep,” says Beckham. “Most installations have between two to fifteen inches of soil. The depth of the soil will determine what plant materials can be chosen. Special lightweight soil mixes are used, but these are designed to allow pea-sized aggregates to rise to the top, to protect the lighter soil from blowing away.” The “art” of landscape design especially comes into play in the selection of plant materials. Beckham has planted green roofs with everything from Missouri natives such as black-eyed Susans and primrose, to creeping juniper, sedum, crocus, astilbe, prickly pear, ornamental grasses, and even herbs such as lavender and thyme.

A Rooftop Respite At home, Beckham installed his own green roof. He’s incorporated a lounge area where he can relax with friends and enjoy a bottle of wine, or pick a few tomatoes among the vegetables he’s planted. “It’s a great place to hang out.” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

SWT Design has installed a number of residential green roof designs, but due to privacy concerns, we have not listed them. However, the SWT Design office, on 7722 Big Bend Boulevard, is located in an old 1800s farmhouse. They’ve built two additions, each with a green roof. One is a modular installation. The other is landscaped with Missouri native plants.

imple, fresh, approachable and elegant describe the inspired dishes that you’ll find at Table 3, Beth William’s most recent – and perhaps

most personal – restaurant endeavor. As owner of Table 3, Beth purposefully has assembled a talented team that can

hear her concepts and translate them into an eclectic fusion of layered flavor that evokes comfort and communicates care. A shining example of her philosophy translated is Table 3’s Shrimp & Cheddar Grits. Each perfectly plump, tender, sweet shrimp is one bite that is complemented by the spicy-edge of the andouille sausage and the creamy, cheesy goodness of the grits. This dish speaks to a feeling of home and an air of hospitality.

Beth’s special emphasis on hospitality has fueled her passion for creating a space that is comfortable for all who enter. Upon walking in to Table 3, guests immediately know they have arrived in a special place. The décor, which mirrors Beth’s eclectic sense of style, is warm and inviting. The elements mix masculine and feminine touches that blend naturally to create an atmosphere where everyone is welcome.

Seasonality plays a big part in Beth’s approach to her menu. She and her chefs start with the basics and then work to transform them into dishes her guests will “feel.” As seasonality permits, the freshest ingredients are sourced from the Wildwood Farmers’ Market and in the spring and summer, Beth grows herbs on the restaurant’s patio.

Table 3’s patio, which brings the casual bon vivant atmosphere into the Wildwood town square, elevates al fresco dining to a new level. The fresh air is the perfect accompaniment to the ultra-fresh and flavorful pan seared salmon with tomato caper meuniere sauce. With easy, familiar ingredients like tomatoes, onions and garlic, the sweet, beautiful salmon is transformed into a completely new dish that will intrigue and satisfy.

What’s a lovely way to follow up a beautiful dinner? The citrus pound cake, which incorporates the fresh zing of lemon, lime and orange, brings summertime sunshine straight to your plate. The sweet-tart flavors are complemented by a gorgeously rich mascarpone cream, a modern twist on the usually expected whipped cream. Mixed seasonal berries add an additional layer of fabulous flavor and texture.

If you want to bring fresh dishes that deliver an eclectic fusion of flavor to your family’s table, we invite you to come to the St. Louis Homes & Lifestyle Cooking School and learn some tips and tricks from Beth Williams herself! See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Any remodel is daunting, but this one even more so. With three active kids and two loving dogs, this family had lived in the one-bedroom apartment above their garage for nearly a year during construction, and the couple knew they needed their own space.

The aim of the library was to create an ideal setting for their use as a getaway – to read a book or share time together.

The aesthetic is modern, young and bright, as sunlight streams in through the doors leading to the pool. Special objects collected during the couple’s years in Asia fill the shelves, and limestone on the fireplace vertically plays off the similar pattern in the cowhide area rug. The neutral sofa and nailhead trim chairs keep the details simple, along with an iconic modernist table by Noguchi for Herman Miller.

Countless hours were spent looking for the crown jewel – the hand-crafted iron, gold-leaf-finished fire screen – which serves as a testament to the value of magical detail and to the pleasure derived from discovering it.

Why the judges love it:Nicely proportioned, simple and elegant, it is evident that each element involved in construction and furnishing has been thoughtfully and tastefully selected. The unexpected blend of styles and interesting juxtaposition of material and color are clean, eclectic and fun, and the ladder is great! The even-handed design work lends a fresh, tranquil feel to what could have been a cluttered, unwelcoming space.

The homeowners wanted their kitchen and hearth room to be a spacious and enjoyable living space. To achieve their goal, the kitchen was designed with an open plan that connects to the stunning hearth room.

One of the biggest architectural challenges was removal of the upstairs bedroom above the kitchen. This allowed for a vaulted ceiling, visually doubling the space and echoing the existing hearth room ceiling. An interior wall between the kitchen and hearth room was demolished, resulting in a spacious, open area that is ideal for entertaining.

An existing fireplace was opened up to become double-sided and covered with cultured stone. Recessed can lights were added in both rooms to illuminate and highlight the artwork and dramatic stone features. Dark-stained, 5-inch-wide plank oak flooring was installed throughout the first floor, and a 54-inch window was installed in the kitchen to expand the view to the pool. The wall art in the hearth room is a striking focal point and enhances the natural tones.

Why the judges love it:These spaces have been nicely integrated, disguising the fact that this was a remodel. Sophisticated and understated, the total effect is one of elegance, with colors that work well together, the warmth of the stain tone, great use of materials and attractive details.

the ceiling

Bond Wolfe Architects314-863-4994 bondwolfe.com

This kitchen ceiling is comprised of painted timbers and recessed coffers that reference the ceiling in the adjacent family room. The coffers’ geometry and spacing was designed to accommodate the lighting patterns needed to highlight specific areas in the kitchen where food preparation and dining take place.

Reflected lighting in the recessed ceiling areas adds drama to the understated, elegant kitchen and complements the cool granite countertops and other neutral finishes, without overpowering the space or competing with other design elements.

The project required more complex planning and design than might meet the eye. All of the utilities in the ceiling had to be rerouted; the floor structure on the second floor above the kitchen had to be altered to accommodate the kitchen’s deep coffers; and the new kitchen design opened up the wall to the family room.

Why the judges love it:In both design and execution, this was a timeless solution and will age gracefully. The coordination of lighting and beam design is excellent – bright and functional. The simple elegance and attention to detail have resulted in a great ceiling and a very nice space.

The homeowners’ sumptuous outdoor living space, framed perfectly by the surrounding trees and lush vegetation, is the ultimate getaway for relaxation and fun. The outdoor kitchen is equipped with high-end designer appliances and everything needed to prepare a first-class meal. Plush Brown Jordan lounge furniture and an inviting fireplace make it a tranquil, alluring spot for entertaining. A grand staircase off the upper patio leads to this private area, where guests can enjoy beautiful views of the grounds and tennis courts and take a dip in the mosaic-clad pool.

Warm hues of Tuscan orange, chocolate brown and savory creams pair nicely with the natural stone and dark wood canopy. Underfoot, travertine ties the space together with its varying ensemble of rich color. The furniture was arranged to create five different spaces that flow together, and the outer ledges were designed for additional seating, allowing guests to sit where they’d like without being excluded from the party.

Why the judges love it:Excellent planning establishes intimate spaces within a large area, and the fireplace and treillage help to define space while not creating barriers. The angled terraces are inviting, the fireplace and arbor area an appealing destination, and the treillage provides both light and shade from the sun for the outdoor kitchen. Great use of materials!

This high-performance home delivers virtually every luxury feature imaginable, while maintaining the carbon footprint of a house a fraction of its size, and is up to 90 percent more efficient than many homes built in the St. Louis area. The structure has been awarded five prestigious local and national “green” certifications and features an advanced insulation and ventilation system, home automation system, locally sourced materials, and walls built using optimization software to minimize waste.

Ground-source heat pumps heat and cool the house and swimming pool, as well as furnishing all of the home’s hot water. Indoor air is filtered to hospital operating room standards, and every room in the house is guaranteed to be within one degree of its set temperature. The design includes a unique rainwater harvesting system that will provide 200,000 gallons of rainwater per year, more than meeting the home’s landscaping irrigation requirements. Additionally, an array of solar panels provides a significant portion of the home’s electric power needs.

Why the judges love it:Proof that any size or style of house can be eco-friendly, this home has been constructed with outstanding attention to energy-efficiency and green design.

This project entailed the expansion of an existing 1,600-square-foot, Foursquare-style home built in 1908. Considering its age and historic character, the architectural challenge was to more than double the size of the home, while consistently maintaining the vernacular of its exterior.

To meet the needs of this family of six, the footprint of the home was expanded by 2,000 square feet. Key elements helping to achieve the seamlessly blended addition included continuation of the wraparound porch to the rear of the home, new finishes of the wood flooring, and beadboard ceilings.

Why the judges love it:Although a substantial addition, the design blends the new with the old well and is very complementary to the existing home. Good choices of authentic-feeling materials, great colors and excellent attention to detail have produced an admirable response to the expansion of a wonderful home.

With its sleek surfaces, soft textures and exotic prints, this “basement-turned-bar” shines like a Las Vegas hotel lounge. The full-service bar includes top-of-the-line appliances, and the lounge showcases plush built-in banquette seating and a 54-inch flat-panel television.

This swanky space was designed to create several different areas, and larger custom windows were added behind the bar to show off the pool. The hallway displays the client’s wine collection on floating shelves, and a lively tiger print carpet (which every Mizzou fan would love) defines the main lounge space. Snakeskin-embossed barstools encircle the main bar, and the striated chocolate floor tile appoints this area “center stage” for entertaining.

Neutral chocolate and gold tones complement a bold apricot to create an energetic atmosphere, but it’s the details – mosaic tile accents, espresso-stained wood paneling and tufted upholstered wall panels – that really make it chic. Overhead, the crystal chandelier twinkles on the black galaxy granite, and strategically placed up/down lights establish a “club-like” feel.

Why the judges love it:Inviting and fun, the spaces are well defined yet open, resulting in a classy contemporary lounge with great proportions and a bit of a retro feel. The layout is refreshingly different, with the bar in the day-lit area and seating in the windowless area. The furniture is well-integrated, the mix of rich materials tasteful, and the ceiling does a great job of looking like a design feature instead of merely masking beams and ductwork.

Celebrated for its gorgeous variety of period architecture, Lafayette Square was chosen as the site for this new sustainable home, which pays homage to its historic setting and is the first “green” home of its kind to be built in the community.

Design concepts included orienting the more public spaces of the home to the south, capitalizing on the passive energy – free light and heat – provided by the sun. The windows and doors open onto a courtyard and grotto-like garden at the first level.

A 250-square-foot conservatory at the southwest corner houses a garden and seating area and generates heat that can be released into the great room via a pair of French doors during the colder months – or released back outside through operable venting roof panels in warm weather.

Solar panels produce electricity as required to offset electrical costs, resulting in a net zero home. Combined with its state-of-the-art geothermal HVAC system, poly-vapor barrier, fiber mesh building wrap and insulation, exterior masonry manufactured at an LEED-approved brick plant, and recycled materials, this home ranks among the most energy-efficient in the city of St. Louis.

Why the judges love it:This home’s historic details are well executed, making it look more like a restoration than new construction. The windows and mass are in great proportion for this architectural style, and the landscape walls and courtyard complement each other well. The brick texture is also appealing.

SEASON

by Catherine Thoele AIFD, CFD

In the interest of growing native, I now enjoy a beautiful Missouri wildflower garden on my property. However, every time I cut the flowers from this area to use in a vase inside my home, they never seem to last very long indoors. Is there something I can do to help them last longer indoors?

Cut wildflowers (or any garden flower, for that matter) in the early morning or late in the day. This is when the stems tend to be holding the most moisture. Never cut them during the heat of the day.

Take a bucket, can or vase filled with 6 -8 inches of cold water out to your gathering spot with you. Cut the stems and immediately place them into the water.

Choose young blooms that are just starting to open. Avoid cutting full-blown or faded blooms as their energy is spent and they will not perform as well or for very long.

Fill (almost to the top) your decorative indoor vessel with clean cold water. Strip all the foliage off the stems up to the water line. Leaves or branches that sit below the water level will quickly rot under water and contaminate the water that the flowers will be drinking for the next few days, thus shortening the shelf life of your arrangement.

Give the stem a fresh cut and place it immediately into the decorative vase.

Check the water level daily. Add water to the arrangement every day if necessary to keep the water level in the vase all the way to the top of the vessel. It is also an excellent idea to pour all the water out of the vase every few days and refill the vase with fresh water to help the flowers last longer.

My poppies ooze a white milky substance when I cut them. What can I do to “stop the bleeding?”

Don’t be alarmed. Several different types of flowers share this natural characteristic. When cutting flowers or plants that “ooze” it is always a good idea to don a pair of gardening gloves. The white excrement is sometimes irritating to certain skin types. Once cut, use a match or lighter and thoroughly singe the end of the stem. This will seal off the stem and the bleeding will stop. Some people prefer to hold the bottom half-inch of the stem under boiling water. This is an acceptable alternative to the match method and produces the same results. The poppy will then be able to hold in the moisture that feeds the bloom, and the white liquid will no longer be able to contaminate the water in the vase or the other flowers that share the vase with the poppies.

How do I get all the garden insects off the flowers before I bring them into my home? Should I spay them with bug killer?

One of the advantages of growing native is that these plants require very little, if any pesticides, so spraying them with bug killer will probably not be helpful. Not to mention the nasty smell those types of aerosols often carry with them. No one wants to smell bug killer across the dinner table. Yuk! So before making your arrangement, simply fill a bucket, laundry sink or kitchen sink with warm water. Submerge your flowers and gently hold them under water for about 30-40 seconds. This signals all stowaways to frantically flee the flowers in search of oxygen and higher ground. Remove the flowers and allow them to drip dry over a piece of newspaper from the recycle bin or maybe use a few paper towels. Pull the plug for a quick and easy burial at sea for any critters who may have hitched a ride indoors on your beautiful wildflowers. See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

Landscaping with native plants is taking the nation by storm. Many St. Louisans are now able to enjoy a plethora of new and unusual blooming flowers from April to November right out of their own yards. As the “growing native” trend gains momentum in our area, all kinds of flowers, specifically wildflowers, are being re-introduced into our neighborhoods. Flowers that we may have never seen before are popping up everywhere. Several of our readers have posed some interesting questions about the care and handling of these new found treasures and want to know how to best use them in their indoor settings. Below are some of the questions that we thought would be most helpful to address for the floral designing hobbyist.

id-centric space

Sherry and Larry Collett are blessed with family who love to visit. But with a growing extended family, sleeping quarters in their St. albans home were getting a bit tight. “It was becoming a challenge to find room for everyone when they came to visit from Chicago,” Sherry explains. the solution? a bright and cheerful space above the garage, designed specifically for the Colletts’ seven grandchildren. to create the space, the couple turned to Donna Boxx, the architect who designed their home 13 years ago. “Donna does a very good job of really listening to her clients,” Sherry says. “She absolutely understood the vision.” the project was no small task, requiring the removal of

K

Page 67: May 2012

the garage roof to create the height and light needed for the space to be functional, but the extra effort was worth it: “The room has the beauty of sloping ceilings and nooks without being cramped,” Sherry explains. Part bedroom, part play area, those sloping ceilings and the attic room’s dormer windows keep things cozy, while an archway framing the sleeping area adds whimsy. The décor’s primary colors—a color scheme Sherry chose because it appeals to all ages and to both boys and girls—set a cheerful tone. The space sleeps four, but the beds double as reading nooks, built-in cabinets under the eaves provide storage for toys and a large table offers a spot for art projects or playing

board games. “It’s a very versatile room,” says Sherry. Though it’s a shared room, Donna created unique spaces for each child by creating built-in nooks for each bed. Sherry further personalized the space with playful pillows: flowers for her granddaughter, a football for the grandson who loves sports and Curious George for the youngest. “Just a few accessories change it entirely,” Sherry says, allowing her to tweak the room for visits from her teenaged grandkids. The kid-centric space is a big hit with the grandkids—and their grandparents. “We just love it,” says Sherry. “The project went very well, and the results are even better than we could have expected.”

slhlBEFORE& AFTER

BY melissa mauzy

They say one person’s trash is another person’s treasure, and no one knows this better than Nancy Cullen, owner of Consign and Design. Nancy transformed an ordinary corner hutch into a unique, bright piece by adding “guacamole” green stripes. After finding the hutch at an estate sale, she made it her mission to give it a fresh, fun look.

Getting from old to new wasn’t a simple process. First painting the hutch white, Nancy then began to conceptualize her vision. With a lot of thought and planning in her head, she meticulously began measuring and taping where she would place the stripes, which proved to be pretty tough.

“You have to start from the center and work your way out,” says Nancy. “It takes a lot of thought and attention to detail to get the lines and spacing even.”

Once she had her lines taped out, Nancy was ready to add the extra pop of color the hutch needed. It didn’t take her long to settle on the color, guacamole green. When you look around her store, the walls are adorned with the same vivid color, as is her kitchen at home. She used Behr Premium Plus paint with primer in it. Nancy finds using paint with primer already in it helps cover the area better. The Behr Premium Plus paint was recently rated #2 by Consumer Reports.

Her finished product is a modern and charming new piece of furniture that will breathe life into any room it is in. The stripes add uniqueness to the hutch. “I think stripes on furniture are fun and out of the ordinary,” says Nancy.

Nancy doesn’t just renovate old furniture. Her store has hundreds of pieces for inspiration. “Repurposing is huge right now, especially shutters, windows and doors,” says Nancy.

Thinking outside of the box is fundamental when giving an old piece new life. Some ideas that Nancy suggested include turning an old shutter horizontally to create a headboard, using a door to build a glass cabinet or hanging an eight-panel glass window on the wall for decoration.

With the right vision and a little creativity, you never know how you can transform someone else’s throwaway into something fabulous.

slhlCHEERS

Although other white wines, especially Sauvignon Blanc, have been “nipping at her heels” for years, the “still reigning” Queen of White Grapes is Chardonnay. And, like the King of Red Grapes, Cabernet Sauvignon, nearly every grape-growing country in the world makes Chardonnay wine.

The Queen’s crown was tarnished in the 1980s and ‘90s when the California wine industry’s heavy use of oak to age the grape led to a backlash best expressed by the “ABC” Movement (Anything But Chardonnay). Proponents of this movement were particularly dismayed that the oak muted the natural acidity and fruit flavors of the grape and made the wine less “food-friendly.”

Happily, the industry listened and, especially from “new world” wine regions (Argentina, Australia, Chile), Chardonnays that are made with either no oak or very light oak ageing are restoring Chardonnay to its rightful place on the dining table.

Creamy seafood chowders and soups and stews, such as New England Clam Chowder, Oyster Stew, Lobster Bisque or Coquille St. Jacques, shine when paired with a lightly oaked Chardonnay. Two that leap to mind come from South Australia’s cooler climate regions. The Morse Code Chardonnay, from Henry’s Drive Vignerons in Padthaway (which is near to the ocean and benefits from cooling sea breezes), was produced by woman winemaker Renae Hirsch to allow the fruit to come forward, but with the subtle use of oak to complement the fruit and add a level of complexity not generally associated with a wine retailing for under $15.

Another Aussie white in the same price range is Paringa Chardonnay. It offers rich stonefruit with floral notes of white peach blossom, balanced with a subtle citrus zing of lemon and lime. What better food to pair it with than firm Bosc pears over Bibb lettuce with honey roasted pecans and creamy gorgonzola cheese, or imported Italian procuitto wrapped around ripe canteloupe or honeydew melon. While Argentina is largely known for red wines like the versatile Malbec, there are a few pockets of cooler climate regions where Chardonnay flourishes. San Rafael, in the southernmost part

of the famous Mendoza wine appellation, is one of those regions and the Famiglia Bianchi Chardonnay from the Valentin Bianchi Winery – one of the oldest still family-owned wineries in Argentina – is an alluring wine, with hints of vanilla, apple and spices in the nose lead to similar flavors on the palate, plus some coconut and cloves. Baked spring chicken, with apples and new potatoes in the same baking dish, will bring out the wine’s core flavors while not overpowering the chicken.

Seafood dishes are enjoyed all year, but in spring they seem particularly welcome. Grapes that come from vineyards near the sea, like the organic plantings of Chile’s Matetic Vineyards, are naturals for pairing with shellfish and more delicate seafood, like flounder, tilapia or branzino. The tropical fruit flavors found in Matetic’s EQ Chardonnay (EQ stands for the equilibrium between land, sea and sky that the winery is striving to reach with its organic farming practices) are brilliant when any of the above fishes are simply grilled and served with a mango or peach fruit sauce.

One Californian that has never “over-oaked” his wines (be they red or white) is Robert Pepi. While his family is noted for creating the benchmark California Sauvignon Blanc in the early 1980s, he has branched out to become a famed winemaker of everything from single-vineyard Cabernets to high-altitude Petite Sirahs. He makes the Angel’s Secret Carneros Chardonnay from grapes coming from one of the best-known regions for Chardonnay in California…and it is renowned for the judicious use of oak that accentuates the pears, peaches, green apples, quince, stonefruit and spices this wine imparts.

Like he did with Sauvignon Blanc a few decades earlier, Bob is showing the world what a food-friendly grape Chardonnay can be and, owing to his Italian heritage, he recommends serving it with any pasta dish in cream or butter sauce, from Fettuccini Alfredo to Cacio y Pepe (Spaghetti with butter, cheese and cracked black pepper).

BY Lorraine raguseoPHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY QuintessentiaL Wines

Pair well with:Even if you can’t decipher the Morse Code on the front label, you’ll love this lightly oaked Chardonnay with creamy shellfish or seafood dishes (by the way, the label spells out the word “Chardonnay”).

Pair well with:Chicken dishes that are not heavily seasoned…often hard to pair with wine…are perfect with Chardonnay grown at higher altitudes like Famiglia Bianchi, from one of the oldest family-owned wineries in Argentina.

Pair well with:Fire up the grill for olive oil and herb-rubbed white fish in foil, served with a Southern Hemisphere Chardonnay that combines the pure tropical fruit flavors the grape naturally imparts with a hint of oak to add a touch of creaminess and weight.

Pair well with:It takes a “heavenly” Chardonnay to enhance pasta dishes fromItaly’s northern regions, especial-ly those that rely more on butter or cream than tomato sauce, and the well-balanced structure of Angel’s Secret proves more than equal to the task.

Missouri Whips up reneWable Wind energy

Anyone who lives in the Midwest knows that powerful winds are capable of cropping up at any time. However in the past Missouri had been seen as having low wind speeds, making large utility-scale wind farms unviable. But Wind Capital Group, which has developed several operational wind farms in the state, says that the long-term potential was substantial.

Wind Capital Group has dramatically grown renewable wind energy in Missouri. Currently, six privately owned wind farms are operational with a capacity of over 458 megawatts. The highest resources for wind are found in the Northwestern part of the state.

Wind power is a clean and renewable energy source, free of emissions or hazardous waste. By using wind energy, contamination of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide is avoided, reducing the contribution to climate change. Who wouldn’t want to breathe easier each day?

The U.S. can be more energy independent, reducing the reliance on foreign oil, by utilizing wind energy. Wind energy projects are also

beneficial to state economies because they revitalize rural communities by broadening the tax base and strengthening local identity. Utility-scale wind farms create jobs in various sectors of the economy and have created more than 100,000 jobs to date.

Renewable energy projects depend on multiple sources of revenue for development including the purchase of the electricity generated by utilities, government programs and the sale of Renewable Energy Credits or Certificates. Nationally, over 850 utility companies offer green, renewable energy programs to customers. These efforts are parallel to those imposed by Proposition C, which passed in 2008 and requires the three large utilities in Missouri to generate a portion of their electricity from green power sources.

Ameren Missouri offers its customers an opportunity to participate in a local green energy program called Pure Power. For information on Pure Power or to participate, visit mypurepower.com, or call 314.480.3554.See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.
