    Un Ballo in MaSchera

    One o the most amous operas by Giuseppe Verdi, the greatestItalian opera composer o the 19th century. The Opera is in threeacts with text by Antonio Somma. It was completed in 1859 andtells the true story o Swedish King Gustavus III, who was shotin 1792 at a masked ball in Stockholm. As the censor in Naplesprotested that the assassination o a king could not be shown onstage, Verdi was orced to change the locale rom 18th century,Stockholm to 17th century Boston and also the main characterrom King Gustavus III to Count Riccardo.Un Ballo in Maschera is a masterpiece o variety o style; it blendstragedy and comedy, lightness, drama and humor. The operassuccess lies in its delicate balance o musical personalities. It isnotable or the shortness and intensity o its principal arias and theabsence o grand design. The opera begins with a short Preludeillustrated by ballet dancers. It includes many amous numbers;

    the tenor-aria La rivedr nell estasi in act I, the baritone-ariaEri tu che macchiavi quellanima in act III and the soprano-aria, Consentimi, O Signore one o Verdis simple but eectivemelodic arches.
