Inspired by designBrandon Rhyder is a
country musician whofound inspiration for
one of the songs on his recentalbum in an unlikely place: a T-shirt.
He saw a fan wearing a T-shirt from the Katydid Collec-tion, created by a Dallas design-er. He sat down in the back ofGilley’s Dallas and wrote thesong “Rock Angel,” the first sin-gle released from his HeadAbove Water album.
He will be playing that andother songs off the albumtonight at Rockin’ Rodeo.
After writing “Rock Angel”he sat down with Katy Messer-smith, owner of the KatydidCollection, and she designed aT-shirt to go along with hissong.
“‘Rock Angel’ has completelylived a life of its own,” Rhydersaid.
The singer draws most of hisinspiration from life, including
his two children and his Texasroots.
“When inspiration strikes, you have to take advantage ofit,” he said.
Unlike his other albums, hewrote all the songs for thisalbum.
He isn’t backed by a majorlabel, so it took many yearsbefore he got his break. But he
enjoys doing his music his ownway. He said he feels like he haseverything except the majorlabel.
“We built this grass-rootseffort from fan [No.] 1,” Rhydersaid.
He calls his band one of thebest and most eclectic bands.
The members were hand-picked over the last few years,
and they are all from differentplaces and different back-grounds, he said.
“One common goal is to playin service of the song,” Rhydersaid.
He said his shows don’t buildup and then stay at the samepace. He likes to build it up andthen pull the rug out fromunder the crowd several timesduring the show to keep themwanting more.
“I like shows that ebb andflow, so to speak,” he said.

Pop duo Eddie Argos from the band Art Brut and Dyan Valdes of The Blood Arm are
out to set the record straight. Their band, Everybody Was in the French Resistance
… Now!, recorded Fixin’ the Charts, Volume One, out on the Cooking Vinyl label.
There’s message behind their mad lyrics, aimed at getting what’s wrong right, spelled out
in songs like “The Scarborough Affaire,” “Billie’s Genes” and “G.I.R.L.F.R.E.N. (You Know I’ve
Got A),” the latter in response to Avril Lavigne’s “Girlfriend,” where the girl steals the other
girl’s guy. Recommended if you like deadpan Brit humor and girl-pop harmonies. Everybody
Was in the French Resistance and opening act Darktown Strutters start their show at 9
p.m. Sunday at Hailey’s, 122 W. Mulberry St. Tickets are $10 for ages 21 and older, $12 for

Devastator is the follow-up to Burr’ssetting of the Psalms, The Shawl.
After Burr finally got his treatment ofthe Bible’s best poetry recorded, fanshad a collection of soulful songs that, taken together, feel like a lullaby.
With Devastator, Burr’s soul is nolonger soothed. It does a slow burn, andflares more than once through thecourse of the album.
Sounds like: Ray LaMontagne andNeil Young chilling out on a long, dustycountry road.
Details: Farris, a regular stage-mateof Burr’s, opens at 10 p.m. Burr goes onat 10:45 p.m., followed by TelegraphCanyon. Cover is $10. Dan’s Silverleaf isat 103 Industrial St. For more informa-tion, visit www.danssilverleaf.com.

OPENING FRIDAYKites () Over-directed, over-
wrought, Bollywood nonsense about
a Las Vegas grifter who runs a scam
of marrying immigrants. He becomes
entangled with a local Indian-nation-
al mobster whose violent son is
about to marry one of the grifter’s
so-called brides. All of a sudden, the
bogus married couple loves each
other and is fleeing from cops and
the mobsters. The excessive extreme
close-ups, non-stop syrupy music,
and fast cutting might appeal mostly
to fans of the genre. Not rated, 130
minutes. — Boo Allen
MacGruber (1/2) The latest big-
screen expansion of a Saturday Night
Live sketch has the same problem as
most of the others — it runs out of
gas at feature length. It stars Will
Forte in the title role as a govern-
ment assassin who comes out of
retirement to avenge his wife’s mur-
der by taking down his villainous
archrival, Dieter Von Cunth (Val
Kilmer). With energy to spare, there
simply aren’t enough fresh laughs
(the villain’s name is funny only so
many times) and the film becomes a
chore to endure. Also stars Kristen
Wiig and Ryan Phillippe. Rated R, 99
minutes. — Todd Jorgenson
Multiple Sarcasms () Timothy
Hutton shines in this otherwise drea-
ry and pretentious 1970s drama
about an architect going through a
midlife crisis. He’s unhappy with his
marriage to his wife (Dana Delany),
and so he retreats to the world of old
movies, eventually trying to find
catharsis by writing a play about his
life. Writer-director Brooks Branch
takes a simplistic look at relationship
conflicts, and seems to miss some
welcome opportunities for humor by
insisting that his story is profound.
Instead, it’s tedious and only mildly
insightful. Rated R, 97 minutes. At
the Angelika Dallas. — T.J.

The film follows their success on the

Dysfunction junction
By Boo AllenFilm Critic
Motherhood never looked ascomplicated or as painful as itdoes in Mother and Child, theinterconnected family dramafrom Rodrigo Garcia, whoshowed an earlier penchant forthis genre in his 2005 film,Nine Lives.
Garcia has crafted an involv-ing story of several women whowant to fill indefinable gaps intheir lives. At times, one ormore of them might not evenbe aware of this yearning untilit looks to be too late to be ful-filled. But Garcia does some-thing else with his film thatsupersedes the dexterity he
shows with his superficiallycomplex narrative.
Garcia’s main strength inMother and Child is turning hisfilm over to his actors and let-ting them extract the subtledrama of his story. He sets uphis camera, with fine, crisp cin-ematography from XavierPerez Grobet, and then lets hisactors convey the emotions andthe message. He thankfullyavoids a jittery camera, or rap-idly cutting back and forth, even near the end when it lookslike such speed might morerapidly progress his often over-drawn plot.
Annette Bening, NaomiWatts and Kerry Washingtonturn in excellent, award-worthyensemble performances asthree Los Angeles women whohave never really met butwhose lives have crossed andwill eventually cross again.
Each encounter brings anunseen influence on the others.
Bening plays Karen, a dourhealth care provider whosemidlife discontent might betraced to her malaise about hav-ing given up her baby for adop-tion when she was 14. Thatchild grows up to be Elizabeth(Watts), a hard-nosed lawyerwhose career success overshad-ows her cold detachment fromrelationships and normalhuman interaction. Meanwhile,Lucy (Washington) and Joseph(David Ramsey) cannot havechildren and set out to adoptfrom the same agency whereKaren once gave awayElizabeth.
Meanwhile, Elizabeth has asexual relationship with herboss (Samuel L. Jackson),Karen succumbs to a hard-earned relationship with a co-worker (Jimmy Smits), and
Lucy argues about adoptionboth with her husband andwith her mother (S. EpathaMerkerson).
Garcia gradually pulls histhreads together, while lettinghis characters develop intodynamic creatures who trans-form when confronting moth-erhood or impending mother-hood.
Garcia’s story often strainscredulity. But the cast usuallyhits the right spots, timely con-veying the needed emotionsthat ultimately make the filmeffective and successful.

trouble finding Mr. Right, so she tries
artificial insemination, only to meet
her perfect man (Alex O’Loughlin) on

However, like just about everything

own backyard. The piece wasperformed by TWU students inthe spring DanceMakers con-cert on campus. The Big RigDance Collective, made up ofTWU students and alumni, re-create the piece today at CrossPollination. Gamblin talked tothe press recently about settingthe piece to three songs byDenton artist Sarah Jaffe.
Gamblin, who’s set to per-form new choreography tomusic by Denton band ShinyAround the Edges, said she’safraid her idea of dancing tolocal musicians’ work could“get tired.” But in the mean-time, that’s not stopping her.
“I have this idea of an ongo-ing collaboration with Dentonmusicians, but I don’t know ifthat will have any appeal to themusicians, and I don’t know ifI’ll lose interest in it myself,” shesaid. “I just know there is somuch great music happeningin the city, and the idea ofworking and performing withlive music is something I’vebeen interested in.”
Gamblin has kept fansinformed with teasers viaTwitter, tweeting about flyinghair and limbs.
The Big Rig Dance Collectivewill perform the first two piecesfrom Gamblin’s “Under.” BigRig is an offshoot of Gamblin’s
TWU company, Dance Lab. Jaffe won’t perform live, but
in an earlier interview, she saidwatching a rehearsal of thework made her see her songs ina new light. Gamblin choseJaffe’s “Two Intangibles Can’tBe Had,” “Adeline” and “Under,”citing their rhythms and emo-tion as the reasons.
“It was a huge honor to seemy artwork projected in a dif-ferent form,” Jaffe said. “It wasreally cool and gave me a differ-ent feeling about them. Ialways have this emotion tiedto each song. It expanded theway I thought about them.”
Gamblin’s piece didn’t have aspecific story, but tangleddancers together and haddancers pulling, pushing, catch-ing and throwing one another.
“I could definitely see how itall made sense,” Jaffe said. “Icould perceive from the motionwhat they perceive in the song.”
While dancers and TWUdance program graduates LilySloan and Bethany Nelson did-n’t say Big Rig’s mission is set instone, its dancers are occupiedwith “site-specific” dance at themoment.
“In site-specific dance, youinteract with the site itself, youcreate dance in relationship toa space,” Nelson said.
Site-adapted dance is taken
from one place to another, often from the traditional per-formance hall stage to a non-traditional space. Gamblinchoreographed “Under” for theMargo Jones auditorium atTWU. Big Rig is adapting it forDan’s Silverleaf — a bar with abasic stage.
“We’ve joked about havingsplinters in our backsides inhere,” Sloan said. “It’s a smallstage. The physical limits are achallenge.”
Big Rig is reprising a site-specific piece they created atBanter, a downtown bistrowhere dancers jumped andhoisted themselves onto theslouchy couches, twirledaround tables and borrowedchairs.
“There was a lot of improvi-sation in that piece,” Nelsonsaid. “It was like a giant gameof Mad Libs. There was alwaysa structure, and everyoneunderstood that they needed tostick with that structure, butthere was a lot of room for playwithin that.”
Sloan said some patronsprobably didn’t expect to havedancers performing while theysipped coffee, beer or wine.
“There were some peopleplaying board games at theback of Banter who were kindof like, ‘Aw, do we really have tomove?’ when we needed tomove some furniture to makeroom for the dance. But by theend of it, they were peeringaround to see what we were up
to,” she said. Gamblin said her imagina-
tion is still moving. “Remember rock lottery?”
she said, referring to a recur-ring event that drops musiciannames into a hat, creates newbands, and then ends the daywith performances by the one-day bands. “Wouldn’t it be coolto have something like a rocklottery, but for musicians anddancers?”
Cross Pollination will alsoinclude performances byDenton company Fight BoyTheatre, artistMartin Iles,Alex Benavidez,Julie McKen-drick, P&GSound Collec-tive, NEEKS,George Quartz,Jose Zamoraand DJ Sire Anthony.
