How well do you know southernCalifornia? If you’re like most, weekendexplorations may have become a bit

habitual, returning to the same destinationstime and time again. Maybe it’s time to find anew hidden gem.

One location that offers a unique blend of old-style California with a mix of the latest culinarypleasures and cultural events isVenturaCountyWest—the cities of Camarillo,Oxnard and Ventura.

VenturaCountWesthasn’t felt the brunt ofthe overwhelming traf-fic and crowds that arethe bane of many local

Camarillo

Aleisurely drive up the PCH bringsone to the warm and distinctiveshores of Santa Barbara. Up a wind-

ing road and through an esteemed neigh-borhood of manicured lawns and estab-lished architecture, travelers find them-selves at the new El Encanto. Tucked awaywithin this residential enclave for over ahundred years, the resort charms with itsstoried history. It was once the favoredescape for the likes of Barbra Streisand andother Hollywood elite. Orient-Expressacquired the resort and meticulouslyrestored each and every bungalow to cap-ture all the romance and glamour thatonce endeared it to both the local Santa

Barbara com-munity andvisitors alike.Added were themodern ameni-

ties one would expect from the highestcaliber resort; kept were the unique detailsand period architecture that renders ElEncanto a beloved destination.

Those previously mentioned bunga-lows, 70 rooms and 22 suites, dot the lush, terraced grounds featuring seven-acres ofgloriously landscaped gardens with sweep-ing views of Santa Barbara and the PacificOcean. Yet don’t let the quaint Craftsmen-style and Spanish Mission architecturediminish expectations. The bungalowinteriors are well-appointed, offering thefinest of furnishings, linens and amenitiesto complete one’s stay. There are also littletouches, like The Love of Letters, whichinvite contemplation and ease. Guests

may request bungalows with fireplaces, private terraces or enclosed gardens. Notwo bungalows are alike, creating endlessvariety for repeat guests.

Along with the bungalows, as muchcare was taken in designing El Encanto’sculinary experience. Executive Chef PatriceMartineau, who was trained in the tenetsof classic French cookery, flawlessly exe-cutes innovative dishes using only thefreshest and highest quality of seasonalingredients. Throughout his culinarycareer, Martineau has been influenced bythe various cities, people and food cultureshe has been fortunate enough to discover. These encounters inspired him to evolvehis classic French style to include interna-tional techniques and ingredients, andoffer discerning diners his personal take onmodern gastronomic cuisine. Guests mayenjoy his flavourful creations at TheTerrace in full view of the majestic Pacific,at the well-appointed Dining Room or inthe more casual Lounge. Those who favorthe vegetarian life will find that El Encantocaters to their needs with an indulgent veg-etarian menu, of which many ingredientsare cultivated in the resort’s very own gar-den. Be sure to salute El Encanto’s residentcow, Ellie, as well. She is responsible for thedelicious housemade cheese that accompa-nies the resort’s vast selection of regionaland international wines.

Around here, rejuvenation has becomethe favored pastime. Not surprisingly, ElEncanto pays homage to the art of relax-ation with The Spa. Unique to this havenare the ocean to vine therapies inspired

by the nearby Pacific Ocean and rollinghills of Santa Barbara’s wine country.Calming sea elements are blended withhealing properties extracted from localfloral to soothe mind, body and soul. Themassage therapists are cheerful, discreetand expertly trained in a variety of tech-niques. For the fitness minded, ElEncanto provides the perfect setting forre-energizing mind and body. Guests canrevitalize their workout regimen withmyriad fitness classes, advanced equip-ment, picturesque jogging trails and stel-lar personal training. Suffice to say at ElEncanto, one’s wellness is in good hands.

Those who can tear themselves awayfrom El Encanto’s idyllic life will discoverexquisite restaurants, fine galleries, bou-

tique wineries and the beautifulCalifornia coast—all just minutes away.Santa Barbara’s many pursuits can be alsobe reserved and arranged with a quickcall to the personal concierge.

Lastly, the resort’s most quintessentialfacet boils down to the intimate and wel-coming ambience. A small note in theroom invites guests to embrace anonymi-ty. The suggestion to lose oneself is aninteresting request and well noted. Withits proximity to Los Angeles and hiddensetting, El Encanto is the perfect place toretreat from the world and get reac-quainted with the benefits of leisure.
