PARISH NEWS Dear Parishioners and Friends: A word of thanks to everyone who worked so hard and so cooperatively to enable the parish to celebrate the life and ministry of Monsignor O’Connor. The celebration on Sunday, the wake in the church, our parish family coming together at 5:30pm for the Eucharist, the funeral on Monday were moments of respect and prayer and beauty. I wish to thank James Palazza who heads our hospitality committee, who made Monsignor’s family so comfortable on Sunday and so well fed. He did the same for all the priests on Monday. The altar servers on Sunday under the direction of Peter Flaherty and on Monday, Marlon Hosang, so enhanced our liturgy. The Young Adult Choir under the direction of Jim Trainor on Sunday evening and the Adult Choir under the direction of Gregory D’Agostino at the funeral Mass on Monday enabled all to lift their voice in song. Thomas Davis saw to the beauty of the sanctuary, arranging the many floral pieces that honored Monsignor O’Connor. John Gasdaska and all who worked with him in arranging the reception after the Mass on Sunday provided us with a great opportunity to share stories of Msgr. O’Connor. William Moran who designed the program for the Mass on Sunday evening, Matt Collins who oversaw the many necessary arrangements. Meg de Mercado and Martha Montalvo, members of the parish office staff worked above and beyond to make everything so special. Miguel Ruiz cleaned the church before and after the 5:30 Mass on Sunday. Thursday of this week is Ascension Thursday, a holyday of obligation, a day when Catholics are required to celebrate the Eucharist. Masses for Ascension Thursday will be celebrated in the parish at 5:30 on Wednesday, Thursday at 7:30am, 9:00am (with the children from the school), 12:10pm and 5:30pm. May is the month of Mary, the Mother of the People of God, the Church. How fitting to celebrate Mother’s Day in May. This is also Easter time, so we join with Mary in rejoicing in Christ’s resurrection from the dead. Drop by the church to spend a little time with Mary in the month of May. Mother’s Day, May 8th, is next Sunday. The names of the mothers will be placed at the altar and prayed for at all the masses throughout Sunday and the following week.. Please be certain to have the names of those you wish to honor in the rectory office no later than Friday noon. Please indicate clearly if they are living or deceased. This week on Monday, we celebrate St. Athanasius, a fourth century deacon and bishop from Alexandria, Egypt, a tireless fighter against the Arian heresy. We also celebrate Sts. Philip and James, Apostles, on Tuesday. Both Philip and James died as martyrs for the sake of the Gospel.

If you look up at the choir loft, you’ll notice the facade pipes (the pipes you can see) have been removed from the organ. This was done so that the organ case could be shored up. It was in danger of collapse. I’ve been assured that the organ case is no longer in danger of collapse. Over the next few weeks, the Peragallo Pipe Organ Company will be repairing and cleaning the organ case, and assessing the condition of the organ itself. The facade pipes have already been sent to New Jersey for cleaning and repair. Peragallo has determined that there isn’t any structural issues with the organ case, which is great news. At a minimum, the organ and pipes need a thorough cleaning, some pipes need to be repaired, some electrical work needs to be done, the repair of some bellows and repairs to the woodwork. It will be a big job, to be sure. I’ll keep you posted. Last week, we were notified that the parish is the recipient of a $40,000 grant from the New York Landmarks Conservancy. The receipt of the grant allows us to go ahead the facade project. All permits are now in place. You should see work starting soon, and very soon. In this Year of Mercy, pray for peace. Fr. Duffell

Padre Duffell. COLLECTION A word of thanks for your generous response to the needs of the parish. Last Sunday $9,083 was received in the offertory baskets at Mass and $3,389 was received through parish pay.... for a total Sunday offering of $12,472. A second offering of $4,276 was collected to support Ecuador after the earthquake. Again, thank you. AMORIS LAETITIA COURSE The Pope's latest document is groundbreaking, and indeed, controversial. The print version will be available the first week of May. Fr. Michael Holleran will be offering a Saturday morning course to explain, interpret and discuss the document. THE BODY-SUBJECT: WORKSHOPS FOR WOMEN

The Body-Subject is a workshop for women who wish to foster compassion toward self and body. Sadly, we live in a consumer society saturated with messages that we must have a ‘perfect’ body. In order to achieve the ‘perfect’ body we are encouraged to take steps that drive profits for body-related industries but also require us to see ourselves as lacking and unacceptable. The Body-Subject therefore invites women to come together to think about how our culture shapes our experience and how we might gently pave the way for a kinder, non-judgmental relationship with ourselves. Approved by the Women’s Therapy Center Institute (WTCI) and Endangered Bodies New York, the Body-Subject is a six-week psycho-educational workshop facilitated by Alison Afra PhD. Activities include doing media analysis, discussing psychological research, exploring the philosophy of embodiment, personal reflections, sharing stories if desired, bodily meditations, yoga, and more. For further details or to register, contact [email protected]. Alternatively, leave your number at the rectory to have Alison call you. The six-week workshop is recommended over the intensive one-day workshop. However, the latter is on offer to those who cannot commit to six weeks. Places are limited so register fast!
