When I was a junior at Stanford studying at the Stanford Overseas Center in Salamanca, my classmates and I traveled all over Spain and Portugal, crisscrossing the Iberian Peninsula on endless bus rides and train trips, learning much about this fascinating part of Europe. While we covered a lot of ground, it was not the most comfortable of journeys. You, however, can not only have a richer intellectual experience, but you can also do so while cruising in style aboard the splendid, three-masted Sea Cloud II. Join us in Granada before we weigh anchor in Málaga and later transit the Strait of Gibraltar. Visit Seville, capital of the Spanish province of Andalucía; Lisbon, Portugal’s capital and the departure point for most of the Portuguese expeditions of the Age of Discovery; and Porto, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the center of port wine production. I promise our seven-night cruise is a much more romantic and comfortable way to experience Spain and Portugal than from the window of a third-class rail car!

“I’ve found the trips to be fun, educational and consistently uplifting with well read, well traveled and well educated people. What’s not to like?”

ALHAMBRA, GRANADA

L I S A S U R W I L L O, associate professor in Stanford’s department of Iberian and Latin American cultures, teaches courses on Iberian literature with an emphasis on 19th-century Spanish theater. Her interest in modern Spain and Portugal has grown since her first courses in History as an undergrad and developed through numerous research and study trips abroad. Most recently she spent a sabbatical during the 2018–19 academic year in Portugal. Her course topics at Stanford range from race and slavery in 19th-century Spain to theater, society and politics in 20th-century Spain and Portugal. Her research deals with questions of property, modernity and the individual as they are manifested in Spanish literary works, with a special focus on dramatic literature that deals with colonial slavery, abolition and citizenship. She is currently writing a book on letters written by enslaved Cuban women to the president of Spain during the 1870s.

The city walls and old quarter are preserved from medieval times, and the Church of St. Anthony is one of Portugal’s finest Baroque buildings with an exuberantly painted ceiling and an altar gilt with Brazilian gold. Nearby, take in the dramatic rock formations of Ponta da Piedade, set against the alluring green sea. Return to the ship for lunch and a full afternoon at sea. SEA CLOUD II (B,L,D)

To assist you in making these independent arrangements, we will send you information with your confirmation materials on when to arrive and depart.

W H A T T O E X P E C TWe consider this program to be moderately strenuous and at times physically demanding and busy. Daily excursions involve up to three miles of walking, at times over rough terrain, with tours lasting as long as three hours. You will be required to walk along ancient city streets, which can be uneven, cobblestoned and slip-pery. In some instances, such as museums, guided tours require standing in one place for 40 to 50 minutes at a time and climbing up and down several flights of stairs that may not have handrails. Many sites and buildings do not have elevators and also do not allow buses to pull up in front, thus requiring a walk of several min-utes, sometimes uphill, to reach the entrance. Participants should be comfortable walking on a rocking ship. Our journey requires travel by motor coach, with no drive longer than two hours. Par-ticipants must be physically fit, in good health and able to keep up with an active group of travelers. We welcome travelers 15 years of age and older on this program.

Deposit & Final PaymentA $1,000-per-person deposit is required to hold space for this program. Sign up online at alumni.stanford.edu/trip?seacloud2020 or call the Travel/Study office at (650) 725-1093. Optional post-trip extension details will go out to confirmed participants. At that time, an additional extension deposit is required. Final payment is due 120 days prior to departure. As a condition of participation, all confirmed participants are required to sign a Release of Liability.

Cancellations & RefundsDeposits and any payments are refundable, less a $500-per-person cancellation fee, until 120 days prior to departure. After that date, refunds can be made only if the program is sold out and your place(s) can be resold, in which case a $1,000-per-person cancellation fee will apply.

InsuranceStanford Travel/Study provides all travelers who are U.S. or Canadian citizens with minimal medical, accident and evacuation coverage under our group-travel insurance policy. Our group policy is intended to provide minimal levels of protection while you are traveling on this program. You may choose to subscribe to optional trip-cancellation and baggage insurance.
