to be on your toes, especiially in traffic. It’s a decreasing radius corner, so picking the right point to apex really makes a difference to being fast through here and out the other side.”

“Turn two is an easy right and then it’s full noise down the pit straight, staying out to the left for the double apex turn three. Recent resealing means you can rail through here faster than before; about half a second”

“Coming in through turn four and into five, watch for drivers steaming up the inside, and if they do, you can switch back and pass under them going into turn six”

Hawke’s Bay Kart Club has hosted many National and North Island Championships and CIK Trophy meetings, providing the club with funds that have allowed recent construction of a viewing tower and upgrading of the pit area. These improvements have given us a track which is truly a pleasure to race at.

Local Rotax Light expert Zach Zaolum takes us for a lap:

“You’ll approach turn one flat out, and be on the brakes as the track crests uphill and then drops down again into the turn. This change in elevation can upset the kart, so you need

From humble dirt beginnings in 1961, the Hawke’s Bay Kart Club has quietly and steadily grown through the years, and today provides us with a not-to-be-missed stop for the New Zealand Rotax Challenge that boasts a superb location and top level facilities. Known today as ZM Raceway, the 650m track is located about 20km southwest of Napier. Set amongst vineyards, the track benefits from spectacular scenery and a great climate.

The Hawke’s Bay club has been home to many top drivers, most notably V8 Supercar driver Greg Murphy, who will often stop by to check out what’s new when visiting Napier. The club is also home to current

“Climb the kerbs through turn seven (a fast left) before you brake into turn eight, a tight left hairpin. Again, you need to watch for people trying to pass at spots like this and find a balance between staying wide for the fastest line and staying tight to deny anyone else a passing opportunity.”

“From the hairpin it’s a flat out run through nine to turns ten and eleven, so tuck in for maximum speed.. You’ll need a dab of brakes going into this double apex section, but not too much as slowing down here will affect your speed down the straight. The back straight at Hawke’s Bay is 200m long so it’s important to be as fast here as you can, especially if you’re on the run to the chequered flag!”

Kane Taylor has been under constant pressure all season, from himself as much as Urban and Hamilton. His determination over the 5 rounds has impressed many, and he looks like a strong contender for a drive in the 2010 Grand Final.
