Vision
The Indo Max Planck Center for Computer Science (IMPECS)
performs top-quality basic research in Computer Science (CS) in cooperation between Indian and German computer scientists,
serves as a bridge between the Indian and German CS communities, and enhance scientific cooperation between them, and
acts as a center of excellence in which faculty and students can build careers.

IMPECS - Programmes
IMPECS
supports research groups built around Indian scientists. Chosen for scientific quality and matching interests with a group at MPI Informatics (MPI-INF) or MPI Software Systems (MPI-SWS).
organizes theme years which would bring together researchers working in the area through workshops, seminars, schools, and short/long term-visits,
offers Max Planck visiting professorships for high-profile researchers,
organizes the exchange of PhD-students, and
provides postdoctoral fellowships to Indian researchers for research stays at MPI-INF and MPI-SWS.

Potential and Impact
IMPECS brings together leading German and Indian research groups.
can build on existing scientific cooperations. Faculty from many leading Indian institutions have spent extensive research stays in Saarbrücken.
IMPECS aims to take this collaboration to a new level by including broader areas of CS and by turning it into a structured program with the following components.
Joint Research Projects and Research Groups
The Career Path Component
The Community Building Component

Joint Research Projects and Research Groups
Each research group within IMPECS will collaborate with a corresponding group at MPI-INF or MPI-SWS.
Aim would be to perform top-quality basic research in Computer Science.
groups are supported with 40 K Euro per year.
Conditions as applied to the Max Planck partner groups.

The Career Path Component
Many faculty at Indian Institutions have spent at least 2 years as a postdoc at MPI-INF.
Most of them received their Ph.D.s from an Indian Institute.
Ties maintained through joint research projects and visits. Some members of IMPECS are supported under the Max-Planck-Partner Group program.
IMPECS will support such a career path – Ph.D. at an Indian institute, postdoc at MPI and faculty position in India in two ways
through the exchange program for PhD students and
through the postdoc program.

Create a center of excellence which not only engages in top-level research, but also opens up career opportunities
for young scientists in India
Allow outstanding Indian guest scientists at MPI-INF & MPI-SWS to establish themselvesscientifically when they return to India

Community Building Component
Overall, too few Indian CS researchers have studied in Germany or had long stays in Germany. Also true for German researchers vis-a-vis India.
To broaden cooperation there is a need to bring together a large number of researchers from the two countries.
Indian research in CS spreads out over many institutions.
IMPECS includes Research Groups all over India
Theme year, visiting professorship, student exchange & research groups aspects of the proposal guarantee that the initiative reaches a large fraction of the community in both countries.
M A X - P L A N C K - G E S E L L S C H A F T10
IMPECS has a provision for 10 research groups.
Ten planned, five at IIT Delhi and five elsewhere.
Each group has a budget of € 40 K /year.
Some examples:
Algorithms and Complexity at IITD, IITK and IISc(now TIFR)
Databases at IITB
Graphics and Vision at IITD
Networks at IITM
Call for proposals for more groups just issued.
