Mid-Year Investor Meetinginvestors of the Maury County Chamber and Economic Alliance (MCCEA) met in May at the William R. Walter Community Room to hear

details about MCCEA’s progress. their plan of work details a four year schedule focused on four pillars of economic development: existing

business development, new business development, workforce development, and people attraction.

Drew Parker, Associate vice President of Morgan Stanley and treasurer of the MCCEA answered the question: Where have the dollars gone?

He expanded that the first round in excess of one million private dollars, supported economic expansion bringing in 76 RFP responses

(requests for proposals) with four wins and 935 new jobs in 2011. in 2012, the MCCEA experienced 109 RFP responses with five wins and 499

new jobs.

Wil Evans, MCCEA President, Alan Watson, current MCCEA Chairman and Chief Executive officer at Maury Regional Medical Center; and Wes

Power and Water Systems and upcoming MCCEA Chairman received investor’s questions:

instead of simply focusing on the results of MCCEA’s economic development efforts, this meeting was designed to provide information on

how the investments are being applied to those efforts. “this was definitely the most interactive investor’s meeting we have had thus far,” says

Wil Evans, President of MCCEA. “We received very candid questions and input from our investors and i look forward to continuing with this

format throughout 2013 and 2014.”

state of Maury countyChamber Member Colonel Ray Henson at the Rite

Care Walk-in Clinic in Columbia offers accolades

for the State of Maury County event held in April

at the northfield Conference Center. “Absolutely,

i enjoyed the event and will attend next year.

i believe that hearing from different areas of

Maury County was helpful in targeting our market.

information about the past and the future helps

my son, Chandler, the owner of Rite Care, to

highlight future projections.

A rarity in the state of tennessee, the State of

Maury County event provides a platform for the

Maury County Board of Education, Columbia State

Community College, the Maury County Regional

Health Care System and all mayors to discuss past

actions and future dreams.

Brent Cooper, Assistant DA for Maury, Wayne,

lawrence and Giles County, says, “listening to

the leaders of Maury County was informative and

afterwards, it was helpful that we had a chance to

talk to them one on one.”

the State of Maury County is the brainchild of the

the Chamber’s Public Affairs Committee, which

also brought last season’s political debate, Pizza

and Politics. Chamber Director, Kara Huckaby,

is pleased with the continued action of the

Chamber’s committee work. “it is a wonderful and

unique opportunity to learn about Maury County

in one evening,” she says.

Auto XLr8r At Northfield evoking the Promise of entrepreneurs these days tennessee is rich in entrepreneurial spirit and the northfield Workforce

and Development Conference Center in Spring Hill is host. Five hundred bright

innovators applied for selection to a business accelerator held there this summer,

which was focused on the automotive industry, appropriately named Auto XlR8R.

only 10 individuals were chosen to benefit from what is also a product of the

Southern Middle tennessee Entrepreneur Center (SMtEC), a piece of the launch

tennessee initiative and a perk for Maury County. Each proposed company was

provided office space and $20,000 in exchange for six to ten percent equity in

their company.

the SMtEC is a fruition of Governor Bill Haslam’s focus on entrepreneurship. launch

tennessee is a public-private partnership in support of innovation and job creation

and is distinguished as a first in the nation. tom Brewer, President of the tennessee

Automotive Manufacturers Association, a member of the Auto XlR8R Board of

Directors and Director of northfield says, “the South has a comparative advantage in

technical expertise and innovation. Maury County’s northfield was an ideal space for

the Auto XlR8R, a 13 week automotive intensive known broadly across the state as a

tenneSeed Camp.”

Jan McKeel, Executive Director of South Central tennessee Workforce Alliance,

whose organization administered the project state grant says, “An accelerator is

different from incubator; the entrepreneur already has the prototype. these folks are

ready to raise money for their ventures.”

in August, Demo Day at northfield saw the results of the boot camp, which began

this past May. the 10 energized entrepreneurs honed their pitches in front of

potential funders. Acceleration for their products, each an application for the car

industry, had been enriched by SMtEC’s bootcamp which included a concentration

of mentors for accounting, engineering, marketing, legal and human resources.

the Regional Director at the State of tennessee for Economic and Community

Development, Clay Banks, says “this program is a feather in Maury County’s cap.

Recognition of tennessee by the Business Facilities Magazine (the source for

corporate site selectors) as the number 1 automotive state in the country proves

that Maury County is on the ball working to commercialize new automotive related

technologies. An investment is being made there in early stage companies, the base

for an ecosystem of innovation. Maury County has the only accelerator of its kind.”

Born in Maine in 1998 as the brainchild of sisters, Gloria Clark and Susan Mesko, Softspace began as a way to come up with event counters and kiosks that were “outside the box.” today Softspace is a full service design and fabrication company servicing tradeshow, event marketing, retail and architectural industries. they also offer their clients show management and exhibit install and dismantle services.

in 2007 with criteria in hand, they focused on tennessee as a place to grow their business and located in Columbia. the Softspace headquarters has recently moved into a 46,000 square foot, state of the art facility along nashville Highway. Doug Stokes is the marketing coordinator.

roben Mounger (rM): the new Softspace facility provides an updated look to the northern entrance of Maury County and Columbia.

Doug stokes (Ds): thanks, Roben. the exterior design of the building is a compliment to the creative folk who work here. Mike Doyle, Ben Rosson, and myself tag-teamed that one.

rM: What occupations are involved at Softspace?

Ds: We employ graphic artists, seamstress, metal workers, carpenters, welders, shipping and receiving clerks, salespersons, as well as other support and management staff.

rM: How many employees altogether?

Ds: thirty-four people now collaborate under on roof. We can serve, not only our trade show business, but we can expand a new focus for the tennessee market with an array of large format print products like signs, banners and vehicle graphics - all made right here - tennessee and American made.

rM: vehicle wraps and graphics! i read every word on the Softspace vehicle parked outside the new building.

Ds: Yes, not only vehicle wraps, a specialty, but tradeshow booths, signs, banners, promotional items and apparel can be designed and produced in house.

rM: With an overabundance of words coming at us, why did i read every word on your vehicle wrap?

Ds: in our culture, people love cars. We are programmed to really look at vehicles. Wraps have proved to be a really effective method of advertising because it’s still strange to see that information on a vehicle.

rM: one of the Softspace graphic artists, Ben Rosson, says that Softspace is a tremendous place to work.

Ds: Softspace is in the creative business. Creative types like Ben and myself appreciate having employment in an area we’re geared toward. that Softspace is here in Columbia is a big plus for me and my family i love the work, the products and the people. it’s important to remember that today people have a choice where to work and live.

rM: Ultimately why did Gloria and Sue decide to locate in Maury County?

Ds: the area offered some helpful and friendly attitudes… and skilled labor when they needed it.

rM: Who are some of the Softspace trade show clients?

Ds: Some people might recognize Microsoft, WalMart, Sony, nike, Kraft, Ebay Motors, Sendodyne, Edmunds, Black Book and infinity Sun to name a few. in celebration of our relocation and new products and services, we look forward to our ribbon cutting on August 28.
