As part of the Christmas festival, the Holy Trinity Anglican
Church in Maungaturoto is planning a Christmas Tree Festi-
val. In addition to the wonderful Bethlehem and nativity scene
which fills the churchs sanctuary, the church will be filled with a
number of 8ft Christmas trees, all decorated in different colours
and symbols. These will be decorated by either different organi-
sations and charities in our local community in support of their
work and ministry to others, (Red Cross, The Hospice, etc) or by
individuals who want to support a particular charity of their own
choice. Some trees will be in colours associated with their char-
ity or organisation. Each tree will have a collection box along-
side it, and those coming to view them will be invited to make a
gift to the charity of their choice. The trees will be supplied by
the church, but all the decorations and lights for each one will be
the responsibility of those decorating them. We are looking for-
ward to a great variety of creativity and colour.
The festival is planned to run from Sunday December 11th until
after Christmas. Perhaps you would like to decorate a tree in
support of a charity or organisation of your own choice. If so
please contact Rodney Dunlop at the Vicarage in Maunga-
turoto. Phone 431 8193 or email [email protected].
We look forward to many participants and to a wonderful festival
of colour and light.
Racheal and Robbie Hinsch of Paparoa won the Excellence in
Retail Category at the Westpac Northland Business Excellence
Awards for 2010 on Saturday night. The Kaipara couple have
two retail businesses; The Sunshine Organics Store in Maunga-
turoto and The Paparoa Store, both of which caught the eye of
Kaipara District Council when looking for local talent to enter
the awards. Originally from Christchurch, Rachel and Robbie
are great Kaipara people; they are hard working and innovative
and have built their business around their passion for healthy
living and preserving the environment. Despite the economic
down turn and the rigorous entry process the number of contest-
ants was up on last year with seven high quality Kaipara businessapplications received.
Mayor Neil Tiller was impressed with the large number of
Kaipara entrants and delighted that a local business won the
competitive retail section. Retail is one of the most competitive
categories and I feel many of our local businesses will feel
inspired by this win
Waitangi National Trust was the Supreme 2010 Westpac North-
land Business of the Year and also took out the Destination
Northland Tourism and Hospitality Category with 50 Northland
businesses competing across 8 business categories. Tony Collinsfrom the Northland Chamber of Commerce said that ...the
awards were a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the success of
many Northland businesses. These enterprises were of varying
size and often very different structure and scale. The one thing
they all had in common was their passion for what they were
doing and their commitment to succeed.
Other winners were:
Sport Northland - winner of the New Zealand Refining
Company Excellence in Business Category
Smart Energy Solutions - winner of the Business CoachingNew Zealand Best Emerging Business Category. The
Judges also highly commended the Pear Tree Restaurant and
Bar and Elevate CA Limited in this category.
StaffCare Limited - winner of the Argon Construction Excel-
lence in Professional Services Category. The Judges also
highly commended the Buchanans Amcal Pharmacy in this
category.
Rintoul Civil Limited - winner of the Golden Bay Cement
Excellence in Construction Manufacturing and Trades Cate-
gory. The Judges also highly commended Airzone Limited
in this category.

Phone 09 4318 403Contacts: Stephen Rosser, Maungaturoto Station Team Manager,Leigh Knightbridge, Assistant Team Manager
Training Tuesday 7.30pm (during school term)
Just a reminder that if you require an emergency ambulance, please phone 111. Dont come directly to the station! It is often unmanned due to the vehicle already being a call, and some nights our volunteers
respond from home.
CalloutsWe attended 56 call outs in September, which was down from 65 in the previous September. 41 of these were medical calls, and 15
were accidents. One of the reasons for the fewer number of call outs is that Mangawhai Ambulance is now transporting patients
when transporting crews are available there. Up until recently Mangawhai was a first response station only, and we transported their
patients. This change must benefit everyone their patients do not have to wait for us to arrive to transport them, and we are more
available in our local area.
ResignationsUnfortunately we have had two resignations recently.
Thank you to Brian Dent for 10 years of dedicated service to the community. Brian has decided it is time to move on, and we will
miss having him around. He will also leave a few gaps on the weekend roster!
Sadly Trevor Brljevich has also recently resigned, but will stay on as Chairperson on the Otamatea Area Committee. We are hold-
ing a farewell dinner in honour of Trevor, and will report on this in the next Matters.
Congratulations
Congratulations to Frances Maclennan who has recently completed her National Diploma, and is now a fully qualified Ambulance
Officer. This requires many hours of study and on road assessments, so well done Frances.
I would like to acknowledge Paddy Dunn for the extra mile she goes in supporting not only Frances, but all our students with extra
trainings.
Trash and TreasureA huge thank you to Albie and Marj Paton and their band of helpers for the fantastic job they did of the Trash & Treasure. They put
in an enormous amount of work to make this event the most successful ever! Well done Albie and Marj you are treasures!!
Opportunity Shop in KaiwakaThanks to Millie OReilly we now have an Op Shop in Kaiwaka (in the premises that was previously Buy the Way). Call in and
have a look when you are over that way I hear that there is a great selection of nic nacs and other items!
Volunteer GardenerWhile I am on the subject of thanks you, I must also mention our volunteer gardener. Cecily Johnson Regularly turns up and keeps
our gardens tidy, and weeds at bay. Thank you very much for your thoughtfulness.
Annual SubscriptionsThank you to everyone who has paid their annual subscription. Subscriptions are available for $31 per person, or $46per family, and this pays for any emergency ambulance transport required during the year. If you would like to be a sub-scriber and have not received the flier in the mail, contact the station.

BOOKS OF THE MONTH FOR NOVEMBER 2010MICHAEL CRICHTON PIRATE LATITUDES(This is a complete manuscript found after the authors death in
2008). It is a rollicking pirate adventure based on the true life of
Captain Edward Hunter set in Jamaica in 1665. A wonderfulstory with amazing characters.
MATTHEW PLAMPIN THE STREET PHILOSOPHERA newspaperman reporting from the battlefields of the Crimean
war sees the treachery and betrayal of the ordinary soldier. This
is an absorbing story of intrigue and retribution.
NON-FICTION UNDER THE OSAKAN SUN by HamishBeaton a young New Zealander teaching English in Japan which
is an entertaining and often hilarious account. A different travel
experience.
REMINDER: We are having new carpet laid and the librarywill be closed on 6th, 8th, 9th, 10th November. We ask you notto put books through the After Hours slot during that time as it

Sat 16th October we had a tree planting day andwere delighted to have the help of theMaungaturoto Cubs and their leader and someparents!!
This is a real community project which will benefit everyone
who needs a quiet place to walk, get fit or just take the kids for
some exercise. Powell's Contracting have been working on the
track formation and we hope to start putting on the surface metal
in the next 2 weeks.
Students from Otamatea High School have been helping with this
project. When this stage is complete you will be able to do a cir-
cuit of about 2km - no steps - reasonable contour, gates suitable
for pushchairs to go through and only a short piece along the
road foot path. The track starts opposite OHS. The signs will go
up as soon as work is completed. If anyone wants to help plant
more trees we still have about 1000 to go or with any of the work
such as carting metal or spreading it - we need all the help wecan get!!!

Great news for the club! Funding has come through for the re-
newal of A green. It has already had the old surface lifted and
if the weather treats us right the new surface should be in place
by the time you read this. This has to happen so as to give us
time to prepare it for our next big tournament on December
17. Thank you to the team that turned out on probably the cold-est and windiest day of the year and completed the lifting job in
record time.
The season is now well under way. First event after the Centre
Opening was the mens and womens pennants. We may not
have won these events but we participated. Next was the Centre
mixed pairs for which the club hosted some of the participants on
the first day. The winners were an Onerahi pairing of Doug
Domingan and Linda Swanson from Anne Bateman and Ken
Fitness of Kensington.
Our first major club tournament of the year, the Heatley Memo-
rial 4s has been held with a maximum entry of 36 teams. A verysuccessful day with six 4 winners. Winners were 1st Anne Bate-
man, Ken Fitness Dianne Lawrence and Steve Smith with 4 wins
33 ends 71 points. 2nd Linda and Tiki Pedro and two others
from the far north centre with 4 wins 28 ends 70 points. Linda
and Tiki both started their bowling careers with the Maunga-
turoto Club and its good to see them come back. Other teams
with 4 wins were Kevin Robinson, John Dunn, Ken Westlake
and Alan Stebbens.
With all teams that took part, at this stage coming back for the
second leg of the double, the 21st McCallum Christmas 4s in
December and with three extra teams entered, we are doing what
a lot of other clubs cant do; filling our tournaments.
The mens side of the club has held their first championship
event of the year. The pairs won by Kevin Robinson and Keith
Youngman from Ted Mooney and Rex Roadley. Some interest-
ing results in the early rounds made for some good watch-
ing. First round losers Ray Hynes and Tom Cumber, a first-year
player, took the experienced pairing of Dave Orford and Irwin
Van Pelt to an extra end. Another pairing totalling 165 years
young between them made it through to the 4th round before
youth managed to prevail. Great going Trevor Brljevich and
Laurie Bassett.
The women have held their handicap pairs with an entry of eightteams. Teams were drawn and Naira Vaney and Valda Mann
prevailed over Margaret Powell and Pauline McMurchy to win
with two lives intact. ~Albie
We invite everyone over 50 to greet and meet The GrowlCollection Centre at a Morning too 10.30 am Thursday 18November in the Anglican Church Hall
One of the main purposes of our group, is to try to sort out
peoples problems and help where possible.
We invite you to meet us the Committee (or The Growl
Collection Centre), so you know who to take your problems or
concerns to. We in turn, will pass them to our president Mr
Harry Daniel and we will progress from there. We dont want to
be anonymous faces in the community.
The meet and greet morning tea is not a meeting, or a
commitment. So come and see us please and participate in a
pleasant morning, where we will explain how far we have got.
MAUNGATUROTO SQUASH FINALS AND
PRIZE-GIVINGThe official squash season has now come to a close and what a season it
has been!!!!
Our membership numbers, both in the junior and senior groups, continue
to increase, partly thanks to the business house competition Kenny
Finlayson organises, this comp has now been running for 7 years and we
all hope it will continue to do so. The business house squash competition
is a great starting block for new members and players to come along join
in and give it a go, if you think this could be you, lookout early next
year for info on how to join in.
The club has also been busy this year with a successful Black Knight
tournament of which we saw entrants coming from as far as Kaitia and
Hamilton. Our Interclub teams are also doing well, both the mens and
womens teams are looking good for a top of the table finish with one
more round to go.One of our major successes in the club is our junior squash. This year
sees our junior numbers at 40, with both primary and high school stu-
dents involved. Many of the juniors have taken the opportunity to par-
ticipate in many tournaments around Northland with Scott Donaldson
holding this years record by entering a whopping 8 tournaments. Some
of the juniors have also excelled in other ways , Kodi Foster was se-
lected into the Northland junior B squad and his big sister Caitlin not
only made it to the A squad but also got to go to the Nationals in Christ-
church where she improved her ranking by 2. We are very proud of all
our juniors and have been told that our junior club is one of if not the
best junior club in Northland! Unfortunately due to the wonderful re-
sponse to our junior program we will be limiting next years intake, there
will be a skill level that juniors will need to pass before we can coach
them, nothing to hard, If you think your child might be interested or is
currently playing and you want to know the criteria, just give me a call.We recently finished the club champs with Finals night and prize-giving
where we saw some great battles and plenty of great squash.
