Physical Changes
Energy is involved in physical changes
In state changes we see a change in kinetic energy
In pairs, discuss how the kinetic energy changes as states change
LO:Explain how physical and chemical changes involve transfers of energy
Keywords: Energy, matter, physical, chemical.
Chemical Changes
Energy is involved in chemical changes
Whenever a chemical reaction occurs energy is usually transferred to or from the surroundings.
For example, when fireworks burn they give out energy in the form of light, heat and sound

Complete the sentence:
Exothermic is when energy is ________, endothermic is when energy is ___________.
LO:Explain how physical and chemical changes involve transfers of energy
Keywords: Energy, matter, physical, chemical.
Exothermic Reactions
In an exothermic reaction energy is given out, usually in the form of heat.
This can often be detected by a rise in temperature.
LO:Explain how physical and chemical changes involve transfers of energy
Keywords: Energy, matter, physical, chemical.
Exothermic reactions are very common. For example:
Burning fuels
Cellular Respiration

Endothermic Reactions
In an endothermic reaction energy is taken in, often as heat, from the surroundings.
This can often be detected by a fall in temperature.
Endothermic reactions are not very common.
LO:Explain how physical and chemical changes involve transfers of energy
Keywords: Energy, matter, physical, chemical.
Some examples are:
Barium hydroxide + ammonium nitrate
photosynthesis takes in light energy
Cooking an egg
Evaporating water
Melting ice cubes

Real Life Example Glow Sticks
EXOTHERMIC - The chemical reaction in a light stick releases energy in the form of light
There are three components of a light stick.
There need to be two chemicals that interact to release energy and also a fluorescent dye to accept this energy and convert it into light.

Homework
Research the term calorimeter and write a definition in your book.
Answer the following two questions: 1) What do scientists use calorimeters for?
2) Explain in a few short sentences how a bomb calorimeter works.
