INTRODUCTION

In this report I will try to discuss as briefly as I can about the use of Adjustment Layers and detail the technical process of how to use it. I will also detail the type of effect we get by using Adjustment Layers by showing the appropriate screenshots.

Report for Adjustment Layers

Chapter One

Adjustment Layers

Creating adjustment layer is the same as creating a new layer, but on adjustment layer we have the advantage of editing or adjusting the appearance of layers below it. By using the following com-mands in adjustment layer we can adjust pictures or images.

Levels :- By using the levels dialogue box we can make fine adjust-ment to a layer or images highlights, midtones or shadows.

Curves :- By using the curves commands we can correct a pictures highlights, quarters tones, midtones, three-quarter tones or shadows separately.

Brightness/contrast :- By using brightness and contrast command we can adjust the brightness and contrast of a picture.

Colour balance :- By using the colour balance dialogue box we can apply or correct a warm or cool in a layer’s high light, midtones or shadows.

Hue/saturate :- By using hue command we can apply the colour of the paint, without affecting the saturation or luminosity of the base pixel. By choosing the saturate command we can change the saturation of pixels based on the saturation of the blend colour, but does not affect the hue.

Selective colours :- By using the selective colours command we can make adjustments on colours like Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow and black (CYMK).

Invert :- By using the invert command we can make the layer look like a film negative.

Actually there is no dialogue box for Invert

Threshold :- By using the threshold command we make the current layer or the background high contrast by converting colour or grey pixels into black and white pixels.

Posterize :- By using the posterize command we reduce the number of colours or value levels in the current layer or the background to a specified number.

When using adjustment layer we can either use it for the whole layer or for a selected area on a layer. If we are going to use it for a selected area we have to make the selection before choosing the command. If we are going to use it for the whole layer we do not need to make selection. If we do not like the result after using adjustment layer effect we can edit it to achieve the result we want. We can open the adjustment layer dialogue box by double clicking on the adjustment layer’s name in the layers pallet. If again we are not happy with the adjustment layer effect we can trash it by simply clicking on the trash in the layers pallet. When we are satisfied with the result then we can use one of the merge commands to make it permanent.

The main advantage of merging down or flattening image is, when we copy and paste images which are not flattened, we only paste the adjustment layer effect. Example - If we use adjustment layer effect on an image which is not flattened, when ever we copy and paste that image on to another image or window we only get the adjustment layer effect. But if we flattened the image, all the layers including the adjustment layer becomes one. Now we can copy and paste every thing together.

Chapter Two

Technical process

Select a layer in the layers pallet. The adjustment layer will be positioned above the currently active layer. From the layers palette pop-up choose New Adjustment layer, or choose layer > New > Adjustment.

Creating a new adjustment layer

Choose a type from the Type pop-up menu. This automatically becomes the name for the layer. We can enter a different name if desired, then set opacity and blending mode at this stage if we want to and Click Ok.

Report for Adjustment Layers

Depending on the type of adjustment layer we chose, the appropri-ate dialogue box opens, then we create the settings we want to experiment with and press ok.

Curves dialogue box

The new adjustment layer appears in the layers palette as the active layer. The settings we created are now applied to all layers below the adjustment layer.

At the moment the adjuctive layer is the active layer

Click the eye icon to hide/show the preview of the changes brought about by the adjustment layer settings. Double-click the adjustment layer to re-enter the appropriate adjustment dialogue box to make changes to the settings.Drag the adjustment layer into the wastebasket if you want to discard the settings. When we are ready to make the settings of the adjustments layer permanent, either use one of the Merge commands from the pop-up, or flatten the image.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion using adjustment layer is like positioning a lens above the pixels on the layers below it to change their appearance. If we don’t like the result, we can edit the adjustment layer to achieve the desired result, or we can discard the adjustment layer with out affecting the original image (layers below it). When we are satisfied with the result we can implement the adjustment layer as permanent change by flattening the layers or by merging the layers.
