Class Format Our daily schedule consists of a curriculum that encourages personal development & social interaction with both structured & informal learning opportunities.

Free Choice Time Learning stations allow children to choose an educational experience providing opportunity for individual exploration and personal expression, while encouraging active learning.

Carpet Time Social and cooperative skills are integrated, shared in a group setting. New information is introduced through stories, songs, and the introduction of themes.

Physical Activity Children naturally love to move! Gym time, swimming and group games improve gross motor skill development, cooperative play and increase the ability to listen and follow directions in a group setting.

Creative Class work Art & craft projects lead to an un-derstanding of basic math, science and pre-reading concepts, while incorporating fine motor and cognitive skills.

The Matt Dishman Early Childhood Education Program includes our Preschool (3 year olds) and Pre-Kindergarten (4 year olds) classes. These programs run September - May with students typically starting in September. Children must be the proper age by September 1, 2013 to be eligible.

Our program follows a developmental philosophy that children develop and grow at their own rate. To enhance the learning experience, our programs feature learning stations that enable children to explore different areas of development. Occasionally, we have mid-year openings.

For specific information on our preschool program or to register your child, please call Matt Dishman CC at 503-823-3673. The non-refundable materials fee for the 2013-2014 school year is $60, which will be split into two equal $30 payments. The first payment is due at initial registration & will be used to secure your child’s spot for the school year. The second payment is due with the Feb. 2014 monthly tuition payment.

Meet The Instructors! Derrell Sekou Soumah Walker is strong presence in the West African Drum and Dance community. He is the perfect blend of drum and dance; Western and West African. Sekou performs and teaches dance all over the United States internationally . His African Dance class at Matt Dishman is a long standing favorite & a must to add to your Tuesday night schedule!

Kelly Ann Koltiska teaches dance and gymnastics classes to students ages one-adult at East Portland, Montavilla, and now here at Dishman Community Center. She also performs with various groups here in Portland, including Blue Sky Ensemble. Kelly holds a B.F.A in dance from The University of Montana. Her training includes modern, improvisation, ballet, jazz, gymnastics, yoga, and tap. Kelly’s teaching style focuses on individuality (after all, everybody is made differently), and joy in movement, while gaining body awareness. One of her goals is to help tap into the natural flow in our bodies.

Bayley Johnson has had a passion for dance since she was 3 years old At the University of Montana, she was introduced to improvisation, modern, & ethnic dance. She teaches ballet and gymnastics at Peninsula Park, Southwest, & now here at Matt Dishman Community Center.

Co-teaching the NEW jazz dance class are Bayley Johnson & Kelly Ann Koltiska. We’re happy to have Bayley join our adult dance program here at Matt Dishman!
